We study the parameter estimation method for linear regression models with possibly skewed stable distributed errors. Our estimation procedure consists of two stages: first, for the regression coefficients, the Cauchy quasi-maximum likelihood estimator (CQMLE) is considered after taking the differences to remove the skewness of noise, and we prove its asymptotic normality and tail-probability estimate; second, as for stable-distribution parameters, we consider the moment estimators based on the symmetrized and centered residuals and prove their $\sqrt{n}$-consistency. To derive the $\sqrt{n}$-consistency, we essentially used the tail-probability estimate of the CQMLE. The proposed estimation procedure has a very low computational load and is much less time-consuming compared with the maximum-likelihood estimator. Further, our estimator can be effectively used as an initial value of the numerical optimization of the log-likelihood.

We consider the quasi-likelihood analysis for a linear regression model driven by a Student-t Lévy process with constant scale and arbitrary degrees of freedom. The model is observed at high frequency over an extending period, under which we can quantify how the sampling frequency affects estimation accuracy. In that setting, joint estimation of trend, scale, and degrees of freedom is a non-trivial problem. The bottleneck is that the Student-t distribution is not closed under convolution, making it difficult to estimate all the parameters fully based on the high-frequency time scale. To efficiently deal with the intricate nature from both theoretical and computational points of view, we propose a two-step quasi-likelihood analysis: first, we make use of the Cauchy quasi-likelihood for estimating the regression-coefficient vector and the scale parameter; then, we construct the sequence of the unit-period cumulative residuals to estimate the remaining degrees of freedom. In particular, using full data in the first step causes a problem stemming from the small-time Cauchy approximation, showing the need for data thinning.

The Gaussian mixed-effects model driven by a stationary integrated Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process has been used for analyzing longitudinal data having an explicit and simple serial-correlation structure in each individual. However, the theoretical aspect of its asymptotic inference is yet to be elucidated. We prove the local asymptotics for the associated log-likelihood function, which in particular guarantees the asymptotic optimality of the suitably chosen maximum-likelihood estimator. We illustrate the obtained asymptotic normality result through some simulations for both balanced and unbalanced datasets.

We first study the local maximum-likelihood asymptotics and reveal the instability in the numerical optimization of the log-likelihood. Then, we construct an asymptotically efficient estimator based on the Newton-Raphson method based on the original log-likelihood function with the initial estimator being naive least-squares-type. Numerical experiments are conducted to show that the proposed one-step estimator is not only theoretically efficient but also numerically much more stable and much less time-consuming compared with the maximum-likelihood estimator.

We consider relative model comparison for the parametric coefficients of a semiparametric ergodic Lévy driven model observed at high-frequency. Our asymptotics is based on the fully explicit two-stage Gaussian quasi-likelihood function (GQLF) of the Euler-approximation type. For selections of the scale and drift coefficients, we propose explicit Gaussian quasi-AIC (GQAIC) and Gaussian quasi-BIC (GQBIC) statistics through the stepwise inference procedure. In particular, we show that the mixed-rates structure of the joint GQLF, which does not emerge for the case of diffusions, gives rise to the non-standard forms of the regularization terms in the selection of the scale coefficient, quantitatively clarifying the relation between estimation precision and sampling frequency. Numerical experiments are given to illustrate our theoretical findings.

For this statistical experiment, the local asymptotic normality of the likelihood is proved with a non-singular Fisher information matrix through the use of a non-diagonal norming matrix. The asymptotic normality and efficiency of a sequence of roots of the associated likelihood equation are shown as well. Moreover, we show that a simple preliminary method of moments can be used as an initial estimator of a scoring procedure, thereby conveniently enabling us to bypass numerically demanding likelihood optimization. Our simulation results show that the one-step estimator can exhibit quite similar finite-sample performance as the maximum likelihood estimator.

In this situation, we construct estimators of both model parameters and sampling stepsize in a fully explicit way, and prove that they are jointly asymptotically normally distributed. The $L^{q}$-boundedness of the obtained estimator is also derived. Further, we propose the Schwarz (BIC) type statistics for model selection and show its model-selection consistency. We conducted some numerical experiments and found that the observed finite-sample performance well supports our theoretical findings. Also provided is a real data example.

In most cases of practical interest, the likelihood function is not available, so we use a quasi-likelihood and place an associated prior on the unknown parameters. It is shown under regularity conditions that there is a Bernstein-von Mises theorem associated to the posterior. We then develop a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm for Bayesian inference and assisted by our theoretical results, we show how to scale Metropolis-Hastings proposals when the frequency of the data grows, in order to prevent the acceptance ratio going to zero in the large data limit. Our algorithm is presented on numerical examples that help to verify our theoretical findings.

We address estimation of parametric coefficients of a pure-jump Lévy driven univariate stochastic differential equation (SDE) model, which is observed at high frequency over a fixed time period. It is known from the previous study Masuda (2013) that adopting the conventional Gaussian quasi-maximum likelihood estimator then leads to an inconsistent estimator. In this paper, under the assumption that the driving Lévy process is locally stable, we extend the Gaussian framework into a non-Gaussian counterpart, by introducing a novel quasi-likelihood function formally based on the small-time stable approximation of the unknown transition density. The resulting estimator turns out to be asymptotically mixed normally distributed without ergodicity and finite moments for a wide range of the driving pure-jump Lévy process, showing much better theoretical performance compared with the Gaussian quasi-maximum likelihood estimator. Extensive simulations are carried out to show good estimation accuracy. The case of large-time asymptotics under ergodicity is briefly mentioned as well, where we can deduce an analogous asymptotic normality result.

For model-specification purpose, we study asymptotic behavior of the marginal quasi-log likelihood associated with a family of locally asymptotically quadratic (LAQ) statistical experiments. Our result entails a far-reaching extension of applicable scope of the classical approximate Bayesian model comparison due to Schwarz, with frequentist-view theoretical foundation. In particular, the proposed statistics can deal with both ergodic and non-ergodic stochastic-process models, where the corresponding $M$-estimator is of multi-scaling type and the asymptotic quasi-information matrix is random. Focusing on the ergodic diffusion model, we also deduce the consistency of the multistage optimal-model selection where we may select an optimal sub-model structure step by step, so that computational cost can be much reduced. We illustrate the proposed method by the Gaussian quasi-likelihood for diffusion-type models in details, together with several numerical experiments.

In this paper, we study the above program for statistical random fields of multiple and also possibly mixed-rates type in the sense of Radchenko (2008) where the associated statistical random fields may be non-differentiable and may fail to be locally asymptotically quadratic. Consequently, a very strong mode of convergence of a wide range of regularized $M$-estimators is ensured. This paper investigates the Gaussian quasi-likelihood estimation of an exponentially ergodic multidimensional Markov process, which is expressed as a solution to a Lévy driven stochastic differential equation whose coefficients are known except for the finite-dimensional parameters to be estimated, where the diffusion coefficient may be degenerate or even null. We suppose that the process is discretely observed under the rapidly increasing experimental design with step size $h_n$. By means of the polynomial-type large deviation inequality, convergence of the corresponding statistical random fields is derived in a mighty mode, which especially leads to the asymptotic normality at rate $\sqrt{nh_n}$ for all the target parameters, and also to the convergence of their moments. As our Gaussian quasi-likelihood solely looks at the local-mean and local-covariance structures, efficiency loss would be large in some instances. Nevertheless, it has the practically important advantages: first, the computation of estimates does not require any fine tuning, and hence it is straightforward; second, the estimation procedure can be adopted without full specification of the Lévy measure.
