We consider a discrete-time random walk on a line starting at $x_0\geq 0$ where a cost is incurred at each jump. We obtain an exact analytical formula for the distribution of the total cost of a trajectory until the process crosses the origin for the first time. The formula is valid for arbitrary jump distribution and cost function (heavy- and light-tailed alike), provided they are symmetric and continuous. We analyze the formula in different scaling regimes, and find a high degree of universality with respect to the details of the jump distribution and the cost function. Applications are given to the motion of an active run-and-tumble particle in one dimension and extensions to multiple cost variables are considered. The analytical results are in perfect agreement with numerical simulations.

We compute the connected two-time correlator of the maximum $M_N(t)$ of $N$ independent Gaussian stochastic processes (GSP) characterised by a common correlation coefficient $ρ$ that depends on the two times $t_1$ and $t_2$. We show analytically that this correlator, for fixed times $t_1$ and $t_2$, decays for large $N$ as a power law $N^{-γ}$ (with logarithmic corrections) with a decorrelation exponent $γ= (1-ρ)/(1+ ρ)$ that depends only on $ρ$, but otherwise is universal for any GSP. We study several examples of physical processes including the fractional Brownian motion (fBm) with Hurst exponent $H$ and the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process. For the fBm, $ρ$ is only a function of $τ= \sqrt{t_1/t_2}$ and we find an interesting ``freezing'' transition at a critical value $τ= τ_c=(3-\sqrt{5})/2$. For $τ< τ_c$, there is an optimal $H^*(τ) > 0$ that maximises the exponent $γ$ and this maximal value freezes to $γ= 1/3$ for $τ>τ_c$. For the OU process, we show that $γ= {\rm tanh}(μ\,|t_1-t_2|/2)$ where $μ$ is the stiffness of the harmonic trap. Numerical simulations confirm our analytical predictions.

We compute exactly the full distribution of the number $m$ of local minima in a one-dimensional landscape generated by a random walk or a Lévy flight. We consider two different ensembles of landscapes, one with a fixed number of steps $N$ and the other till the first-passage time of the random walk to the origin. We show that the distribution of $m$ is drastically different in the two ensembles (Gaussian in the former case, while having a power-law tail in the latter $m^{-3/2}$ in the latter case). However, the most striking aspect of our results is that, in each case, the distribution is completely universal for all $m$ (and not just for large $m$), i.e., independent of the jump distribution in the random walk. This means that the distributions are exactly identical for Lévy flights and random walks with finite jump variance. Our analytical results are in excellent agreement with our numerical simulations.

We consider a system of non-interacting Brownian particles on the line with steplike initial condition and study the statistics of the occupation time on the positive half-line. We demonstrate that this system exhibits long-lasting memory effects of the initialization. Specifically, we calculate the mean and the variance of the occupation time, demonstrating that the memory effects in the variance are determined by a generalized compressibility (or Fano factor), associated with the initial condition. In the particular case of the uncorrelated uniform initial condition we conduct a detailed study of two probability distributions of the occupation time: annealed (averaged over all possible initial configurations) and quenched (for a typical configuration). We show that at large times both the annealed and the quenched distributions admit large deviation form and we compute analytically the associated rate functions. We verify our analytical predictions via numerical simulations using Importance Sampling Monte-Carlo strategy.

We consider $N$ classical particles interacting via the Coulomb potential in spatial dimension $d$ and in the presence of an external trap, at equilibrium at inverse temperature $β$. In the large $N$ limit, the particles are confined within a droplet of finite size. We study smooth linear statistics, i.e. the fluctuations of sums of the form ${\cal L}_N = \sum_{i=1}^N f({\bf x}_i)$, where ${\bf x}_i$'s are the positions of the particles and where $f({\bf x}_i)$ is a sufficiently regular function. There exists at present standard results for the first and second moments of ${\cal L}_N$ in the large $N$ limit, as well as associated Central Limit Theorems in general dimension and for a wide class of confining potentials. Here we obtain explicit expressions for the higher order cumulants of ${\cal L}_N$ at large $N$, when the function $f({\bf x})=f(|{\bf x}|)$ and the confining potential are both rotationnally invariant. A remarkable feature of our results is that these higher cumulants depend only on the value of $f'(|{\bf x}|)$ and its higher order derivatives evaluated exactly at the boundary of the droplet, which in this case is a $d$-dimensional sphere. In the particular two-dimensional case $d=2$ at the special value $β=2$, a connection to the Ginibre ensemble allows us to derive these results in an alternative way using the tools of determinantal point processes. Finally we also obtain the large deviation form of the full probability distribution function of ${\cal L}_N$.

We consider the problem of leakage or effusion of an ensemble of independent stochastic processes from a region where they are initially randomly distributed. The case of Brownian motion, initially confined to the left half line with uniform density and leaking into the positive half line is an example which has been extensively studied in the literature. Here we derive new results for the average number and variance of the number of leaked particles for arbitrary Gaussian processes initially confined to the negative half line and also derive its joint two-time probability distribution, both for the annealed and the quenched initial conditions. For the annealed case, we show that the two-time joint distribution is a bivariate Poisson distribution. We also discuss the role of correlations in the initial particle positions on the statistics of the number of particles on the positive half line. We show that the strong memory effects in the variance of the particle number on the positive real axis for Brownian particles, seen in recent studies, persist for arbitrary Gaussian processes and also at the level of two-time correlation functions.

Using a Coulomb gas method, we study the statistics of $s = (1/N) \sum_{i=1}^N f(x_i)$ where $f(x)$, in principle, is an arbitrary smooth function. While the mean of $s$ is easy to compute, the variance is nontrivial due to the long-range Coulomb interactions. In this paper we demonstrate that the fluctuations around this mean are Gaussian with a variance ${\rm Var}(s) \approx b/N^3$ for large $N$. We provide an exact compact formula for the constant $b = 1/(4α) \int_{-2 α}^{2α} [f'(x)]^2\, dx$. In addition, we also calculate the full large deviation function characterising the tails of the full distribution ${\cal P}(s,N)$ for several different examples of $f(x)$. Our analytical predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations.

We study the statistics of the gaps $Δ_{k,n}$ between the $k^\text{th}$ and $(k+1)^\text{th}$ maximum of the set of positions $\{x_1,\ldots,x_n\}$. We obtain an exact analytical expression for the probability distribution $P_{k,n}(Δ)$ valid for any $k$ and $n$, and jump distribution $f(η)$, which we then analyse in the large $n$ limit. For jump distributions whose Fourier transform behaves, for small $q$, as $\hat f (q) \sim 1 - |q|^μ$ with a Lévy index $0< μ\leq 2$, we find that, the distribution becomes stationary in the limit of $n\to \infty$, i.e. $\lim_{n\to \infty} P_{k,n}(Δ)=P_k(Δ)$. We obtain an explicit expression for its first moment $\mathbb{E}[Δ_{k}]$, valid for any $k$ and jump distribution $f(η)$ with $μ>1$, and show that it exhibits a universal algebraic decay $ \mathbb{E}[Δ_{k}]\sim k^{1/μ-1} Γ\left(1-1/μ\right)/π$ for large $k$. Furthermore, for $μ>1$, we show that in the limit of $k\to\infty$ the stationary distribution exhibits a universal scaling form $P_k(Δ) \sim k^{1-1/μ} \mathcal{P}_μ(k^{1-1/μ}Δ)$ which depends only on the Lévy index $μ$, but not on the details of the jump distribution. We compute explicitly the limiting scaling function $\mathcal{P}_μ(x)$ in terms of Mittag-Leffler functions. For $1< μ<2$, we show that, while this scaling function captures the distribution of the typical gaps on the scale $k^{1/μ-1}$, the atypical large gaps are not described by this scaling function since they occur at a larger scale of order $k^{1/μ}$.

We consider the $1d$ one-component plasma (OCP) in thermal equilibrium, consisting of $N$ equally charged particles on a line, with pairwise Coulomb repulsion and confined by an external harmonic potential. We study two observables: (i) the distribution of the gap between two consecutive particles in the bulk and (ii) the distribution of the number of particles $N_I$ in a fixed interval $I=[-L,+L]$ inside the bulk, the so-called full-counting-statistics (FCS). For both observables, we compute, for large $N$, the distribution of the typical as well as atypical large fluctuations. We show that the distribution of the typical fluctuations of the gap are described by the scaling form ${\cal P}_{\rm gap, bulk}(g,N) \sim N H_α(g\,N)$, where $α$ is the interaction coupling and the scaling function $H_α(z)$ is computed explicitly. It has a faster than Gaussian tail for large $z$: $H_α(z) \sim e^{-z^3/(96 α)}$ as $z \to \infty$. Similarly, for the FCS, we show that the distribution of the typical fluctuations of $N_I$ is described by the scaling form ${\cal P}_{\rm FCS}(N_I,N) \sim 2α\, U_α[2 α(N_I - \bar{N}_I)]$, where $\bar{N}_I = L\,N/(2 α)$ is the average value of $N_I$ and the scaling function $U_α(z)$ is obtained explicitly. For both observables, we show that the probability of large fluctuations are described by large deviations forms with respective rate functions that we compute explicitly. Our numerical Monte-Carlo simulations are in good agreement with our analytical predictions.

For $p>0$, we show that $\langle V_p(n)\rangle$ grows extremely slowly as $\sim \left[\log(n)\right]^d$. We observe that the recurrence-transience transition at $d=2$ for standard random walks (without resetting) disappears in the presence of resetting. In the limit $p\to 0$, we compute the exact crossover scaling function between the two regimes. In the one-dimensional case, we derive analytically the full distribution of $V_p(n)$ in the limit of large $n$. Moreover, for a one-dimensional random walker, we introduce a new observable, which we call imbalance, that measures how much the visited region is symmetric around the starting position. We analytically compute the full distribution of the imbalance both for $p=0$ and for $p>0$. Our theoretical results are verified by extensive numerical simulations.

We introduce a resetting Brownian bridge as a simple model to study search processes where the total search time $t_f$ is finite and the searcher returns to its starting point at $t_f$. This is simply a Brownian motion with a Poissonian resetting rate $r$ to the origin which is constrained to start and end at the origin at time $t_f$. We first provide a rejection-free algorithm to generate such resetting bridges in all dimensions by deriving an effective Langevin equation with an explicit space-time dependent drift $\tilde μ({\bf x},t)$ and resetting rate $\tilde r({\bf x}, t)$. We also study the efficiency of the search process in one-dimension by computing exactly various observables such as the mean-square displacement, the hitting probability of a fixed target and the expected maximum. Surprisingly, we find that there exists an optimal resetting rate $r^*$ that maximizes the search efficiency, even in the presence of a bridge constraint. We show however that the physical mechanism responsible for this optimal resetting rate for bridges is entirely different from resetting Brownian motions without the bridge constraint.

We consider a Brownian particle with diffusion coefficient $D$ in a $d$-dimensional ball of radius $R$ with reflecting boundaries. We study the maximum $M_x(t)$ of the trajectory of the particle along the $x$-direction at time $t$. In the long time limit, the maximum converges to the radius of the ball $M_x(t) \to R$ for $t\to \infty$. We investigate how this limit is approached and obtain an exact analytical expression for the distribution of the fluctuations $Δ(t) = [R-M_x(t)]/R$ in the limit of large $t$ in all dimensions. We find that the distribution of $Δ(t)$ exhibits a rich variety of behaviors depending on the dimension $d$. These results are obtained by establishing a connection between this problem and the narrow escape time problem. We apply our results in $d=2$ to study the convex hull of the trajectory of the particle in a disk of radius $R$ with reflecting boundaries. We find that the mean perimeter $\langle L(t)\rangle$ of the convex hull exhibits a slow convergence towards the perimeter of the circle $2πR$ with a stretched exponential decay $2πR-\langle L(t)\rangle \propto \sqrt{R}(Dt)^{1/4} \,e^{-2\sqrt{2Dt}/R}$. Finally, we generalise our results to other confining geometries, such as the ellipse with reflecting boundaries. Our results are corroborated by thorough numerical simulations.

The particles interact via long-range repulsive potential, of the form $r^{-k}$ with $-2<k<\infty$ where $r$ is the inter-particle distance. In equilibrium at temperature $O(1)$, the gas settles on a finite length scale $L_N$ that depends on $N$ and $k$. We numerically observe that the typical fluctuation of $y_{\max} = x_{\max}/L_N$ around its mean is of $O(N^{-η_k})$. Over this length scale, the distribution of the typical fluctuations has a $N$ independent scaling form. We show that the exponent $η_k$ obtained from the Hessian theory predicts the scale of typical fluctuations remarkably well. The distribution of atypical fluctuations to the left and right of the mean $\langle y_{\max} \rangle$ are governed by the left and right large deviation functions, respectively. We compute these large deviation functions explicitly $\forall k>-2$. We also find that these large deviation functions describe a pulled to pushed type phase transition as observed in Dyson's log-gas ($k\to 0$) and $1d$ one component plasma ($k=-1$). Remarkably, we find that the phase transition remains $3^{\rm rd}$ order for the entire regime. Our results demonstrate the striking universality of the $3^{\rm rd}$ order transition even in models that fall outside the paradigm of Coulomb systems and the random matrix theory. We numerically verify our analytical expressions of the large deviation functions via Monte Carlo simulation using an importance sampling algorithm.

We compute exactly the mean number of records $\langle R_N \rangle$ for a time-series of size $N$ whose entries represent the positions of a discrete time random walker on the line. At each time step, the walker jumps by a length $η$ drawn independently from a symmetric and continuous distribution $f(η)$ with probability $1-r$ (with $0\leq r < 1$) and with the complementary probability $r$ it resets to its starting point $x=0$. This is an exactly solvable example of a weakly correlated time-series that interpolates between a strongly correlated random walk series (for $r=0$) and an uncorrelated time-series (for $(1-r) \ll 1$). Remarkably, we found that for every fixed $r \in [0,1[$ and any $N$, the mean number of records $\langle R_N \rangle$ is completely universal, i.e., independent of the jump distribution $f(η)$. In particular, for large $N$, we show that $\langle R_N \rangle$ grows very slowly with increasing $N$ as $\langle R_N \rangle \approx (1/\sqrt{r})\, \ln N$ for $0<r <1$. In this paper, we compute exactly the average density of a harmonically confined Riesz gas of $N$ particles for large $N$ in the presence of a hard wall. In this Riesz gas, the particles repel each other via a pairwise interaction that behaves as $|x_i - x_j|^{-k}$ for $k>-2$, with $x_i$ denoting the position of the $i^{\rm th}$ particle. This density can be classified into three different regimes of $k$. For $k \geq 1$, where the interactions are effectively short-ranged, the appropriately scaled density has a finite support over $[-l_k(w),w]$ where $w$ is the scaled position of the wall. While the density vanishes at the left edge of the support, it approaches a nonzero constant at the right edge $w$. For $-1<k<1$, where the interactions are weakly long-ranged, we find that the scaled density is again supported over $[-l_k(w),w]$. While it still vanishes at the left edge of the support, it diverges at the right edge $w$ algebraically with an exponent $(k-1)/2$. For $-2<k< -1$, the interactions are strongly long-ranged that leads to a rather exotic density profile with an extended bulk part and a delta-peak at the wall, separated by a hole in between. Exactly at $k=-1$ the hole disappears. For $-2<k< -1$, we find an interesting first-order phase transition when the scaled position of the wall decreases through a critical value $w=w^*(k)$. For $w<w^*(k)$, the density is a pure delta-peak located at the wall. The amplitude of the delta-peak plays the role of an order parameter which jumps to the value $1$ as $w$ is decreased through $w^*(k)$. Our analytical results are in very good agreement with our Monte-Carlo simulations.

We consider a single run-and-tumble particle (RTP) moving in one dimension. We assume that the velocity of the particle is drawn independently at each tumbling from a zero-mean Gaussian distribution and that the run times are exponentially distributed. We investigate the probability distribution $P(X,N)$ of the position $X$ of the particle after $N$ runs, with $N\gg 1$. We show that in the regime $ X \sim N^{3/4}$ the distribution $P(X,N)$ has a large deviation form with a rate function characterized by a discontinuous derivative at the critical value $X=X_c>0$. The same is true for $X=-X_c$ due to the symmetry of $P(X,N)$. We show that this singularity corresponds to a first-order condensation transition: for $X>X_c$ a single large jump dominates the RTP trajectory. We consider the participation ratio of the single-run displacements as the order parameter of the system, showing that this quantity is discontinuous at $X=X_c$. Our results are supported by numerical simulations performed with a constrained Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm.

We consider one-dimensional discrete-time random walks (RWs) with arbitrary symmetric and continuous jump distributions $f(η)$, including the case of Lévy flights. We study the expected maximum ${\mathbb E}[M_n]$ of bridge RWs, i.e., RWs starting and ending at the origin after $n$ steps. We obtain an exact analytical expression for ${\mathbb E}[M_n]$ valid for any $n$ and jump distribution $f(η)$, which we then analyze in the large $n$ limit up to second leading order term. For jump distributions whose Fourier transform behaves, for small $k$, as $\hat f(k) \sim 1 - |a\, k|^μ$ with a Lévy index $0<μ\leq 2$ and an arbitrary length scale $a>0$, we find that, at leading order for large $n$, ${\mathbb E}[M_n]\sim a\, h_1(μ)\, n^{1/μ}$. We obtain an explicit expression for the amplitude $h_1(μ)$ and find that it carries the signature of the bridge condition, being different from its counterpart for the free random walk. For $μ=2$, we find that the second leading order term is a constant, which, quite remarkably, is the same as its counterpart for the free RW. For generic $0< μ< 2$, this second leading order term is a growing function of $n$, which depends non-trivially on further details of $\hat f (k)$, beyond the Lévy index $μ$. Finally, we apply our results to compute the mean perimeter of the convex hull of the $2d$ Rouse polymer chain and of the $2d$ run-and-tumble particle, as well as to the computation of the survival probability in a bridge version of the well-known "lamb-lion" capture problem.

We compute exactly the statistics of the number of records in a discrete-time random walk model on a line where the walker stays at a given position with a nonzero probability $0\leq p \leq 1$, while with the complementary probability $1-p$, it jumps to a new position with a jump length drawn from a continuous and symmetric distribution $f_0(η)$. We have shown that, for arbitrary $p$, the statistics of records up to step $N$ is completely universal, i.e., independent of $f_0(η)$ for any $N$. We also compute the connected two-time correlation function $C_p(m_1, m_2)$ of the record-breaking events at times $m_1$ and $m_2$ and show it is also universal for all $p$. Moreover, we demonstrate that $C_p(m_1, m_2)< C_0(m_1, m_2)$ for all $p>0$, indicating that a nonzero $p$ induces additional anti-correlations between record events. We further show that these anti-correlations lead to a drastic reduction in the fluctuations of the record numbers with increasing $p$. This is manifest in the Fano factor, i.e. the ratio of the variance and the mean of the record number, which we compute explicitly. We also show that an interesting scaling limit emerges when $p \to 1$, $N \to \infty$ with the product $t = (1-p)\, N$ fixed. We compute exactly the associated universal scaling functions for the mean, variance and the Fano factor of the number of records in this scaling limit. .

We study the position distribution $P(\vec{R},N)$ of a run-and-tumble particle (RTP) in arbitrary dimension $d$, after $N$ runs. We assume that the constant speed $v>0$ of the particle during each running phase is independently drawn from a probability distribution $W(v)$ and that the direction of the particle is chosen isotropically after each tumbling. The position distribution is clearly isotropic, $P(\vec{R},N)\to P(R,N)$ where $R=|\vec{R}|$. We show that, under certain conditions on $d$ and $W(v)$ and for large $N$, a condensation transition occurs at some critical value of $R=R_c\sim O(N)$ located in the large deviation regime of $P(R,N)$. For $R<R_c$ (subcritical fluid phase), all runs are roughly of the same size in a typical trajectory. In contrast, an RTP trajectory with $R>R_c$ is typically dominated by a `condensate', i.e., a large single run that subsumes a finite fraction of the total displacement (supercritical condensed phase). Focusing on the family of speed distributions $W(v)=α(1-v/v_0)^{α-1}/v_0$, parametrized by $α>0$, we show that, for large $N$, $P(R,N)\sim \exp\left[-Nψ_{d,α}(R/N)\right]$ and we compute exactly the rate function $ψ_{d,α}(z)$ for any $d$ and $α$. We show that the transition manifests itself as a singularity of this rate function at $R=R_c$ and that its order depends continuously on $d$ and $α$. We also compute the distribution of the condensate size for $R>R_c$. Finally, we study the model when the total duration $T$ of the RTP, instead of the total number of runs, is fixed. Our analytical predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations, performed using a constrained Markov chain Monte Carlo technique, with precision $\sim 10^{-100}$.

We first show that this problem can be mapped to a non-intersecting Dyson's Brownian bridges with Dyson index $β=2$. For the latter we derive an exact effective Langevin equation that allows to generate very efficiently the vicious bridge configurations. In particular, for the flat-to-flat configuration in the large $N$ limit, where $a_i = b_i = (i-1)/N$, for $i = 1, \cdots, N$, we use this effective Langevin equation to derive an exact Burgers' equation (in the inviscid limit) for the Green's function and solve this Burgers' equation for arbitrary time $0 \leq t\leq t_f$. At certain specific values of intermediate times $t$, such as $t=t_f/2$, $t=t_f/3$ and $t=t_f/4$ we obtain the average density of the flat-to-flat bridge explicitly. We also derive explicitly how the two edges of the average density evolve from time $t=0$ to time $t=t_f$. Finally, we discuss connections to some well known problems, such as the Chern-Simons model, the related Stieltjes-Wigert orthogonal polynomials and the Borodin-Muttalib ensemble of determinantal point processes.

We consider a one-dimensional run-and-tumble particle, or persistent random walk, in the presence of an absorbing boundary located at the origin. After each tumbling event, which occurs at a constant rate $γ$, the (new) velocity of the particle is drawn randomly from a distribution $W(v)$. We study the survival probability $S(x,t)$ of a particle starting from $x \geq 0$ up to time $t$ and obtain an explicit expression for its double Laplace transform (with respect to both $x$ and $t$) for an arbitrary velocity distribution $W(v)$, not necessarily symmetric. This result is obtained as a consequence of Spitzer's formula, which is well known in the theory of random walks and can be viewed as a generalization of the Sparre Andersen theorem. We then apply this general result to the specific case of a two-state particle with velocity $\pm v_0$, the so-called persistent random walk (PRW), and in the presence of a constant drift $μ$ and obtain an explicit expression for $S(x,t)$, for which we present more detailed results. Depending on the drift $μ$, we find a rich variety of behaviours for $S(x,t)$, leading to three distinct cases: (i) subcritical drift $-v_0\!<\!μ\!<\! v_0$, (ii) supercritical drift $μ< -v_0$ and (iii) critical drift $μ=-v_0$. In these three cases, we obtain exact analytical expressions for the survival probability $S(x,t)$ and establish connections with existing formulae in the mathematics literature. Finally, we discuss some applications of these results to record statistics and to the statistics of last-passage times.

We compute exactly the mean perimeter and the mean area of the convex hull of a $2$-d Brownian motion of duration $t$ and diffusion constant $D$, in the presence of resetting to the origin at a constant rate $r$. We show that for any $t$, the mean perimeter is given by $\langle L(t)\rangle= 2 π\sqrt{\frac{D}{r}}\, f_1(rt)$ and the mean area is given by $\langle A(t) \rangle= 2π\frac{D}{r}\, f_2(rt)$ where the scaling functions $f_1(z)$ and $f_2(z)$ are computed explicitly. For large $t\gg 1/r$, the mean perimeter grows extremely slowly as $\langle L(t)\rangle \propto \ln (rt)$ with time. Likewise, the mean area also grows slowly as $\langle A(t)\rangle \propto \ln^2(rt)$ for $t\gg 1/r$. Our exact results indicate that the convex hull, in the presence of resetting, approaches a circular shape at late times. Numerical simulations are in perfect agreement with our analytical predictions.

We study the statistics of the number of records $R_n$ for a symmetric, $n$-step, discrete jump process on a $1D$ lattice. At a given step, the walker can jump by arbitrary lattice units drawn from a given symmetric probability distribution. This process includes, as a special case, the standard nearest neighbor lattice random walk. We derive explicitly the generating function of the distribution $P(R_n)$ of the number of records, valid for arbitrary discrete jump distributions. As a byproduct, we provide a relatively simple proof of the generalized Sparre Andersen theorem for the survival probability of a random walk on a line, with discrete or continuous jump distributions. For the discrete jump process, we then derive the asymptotic large $n$ behavior of $P(R_n)$ as well as of the average number of records $E(R_n)$. We show that unlike the case of random walks with symmetric and continuous jump distributions where the record statistics is strongly universal (i.e., independent of the jump distribution for all $n$), the record statistics for lattice walks depends on the jump distribution for any fixed $n$. However, in the large $n$ limit, we show that the distribution of the scaled record number $R_n/E(R_n)$ approaches a universal, half-Gaussian form for any discrete jump process. The dependence on the jump distribution enters only through the scale factor $E(R_n)$, which we also compute in the large $n$ limit for arbitrary jump distributions. We present explicit results for a few examples and provide numerical checks of our analytical predictions.

We consider a one-dimensional Brownian motion of fixed duration $T$. Using a path-integral technique, we compute exactly the probability distribution of the difference $τ=t_{\min}-t_{\max}$ between the time $t_{\min}$ of the global minimum and the time $t_{\max}$ of the global maximum. We extend this result to a Brownian bridge, i.e. a periodic Brownian motion of period $T$. In both cases, we compute analytically the first few moments of $τ$, as well as the covariance of $t_{\max}$ and $t_{\min}$, showing that these times are anti-correlated. We demonstrate that the distribution of $τ$ for Brownian motion is valid for discrete-time random walks with $n$ steps and with a finite jump variance, in the limit $n\to \infty$. In the case of Lévy flights, which have a divergent jump variance, we numerically verify that the distribution of $τ$ differs from the Brownian case. For random walks with continuous and symmetric jumps we numerically verify that the probability of the event "$τ= n$" is exactly $1/(2n)$ for any finite $n$, independently of the jump distribution. Our results can be also applied to describe the distance between the maximal and minimal height of $(1+1)$-dimensional stationary-state Kardar-Parisi-Zhang interfaces growing over a substrate of finite size $L$. Our findings are confirmed by numerical simulations. Some of these results have been announced in a recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 200201 (2019)].

The particles are confined by a harmonic trap and repelling each other via pairwise interaction potential that behaves as a power law $\propto \sum_{\substack{i\neq j}}^N|x_i-x_j|^{-k}$ (with $k>-2$) of their mutual distance. This is a generalization of the well known cases of the one component plasma ($k=-1$), Dyson's log-gas ($k\to 0^+$), and the Calogero-Moser model ($k=2$). Due to the competition between harmonic confinement and pairwise repulsion, the particles spread over a finite region of space for all $k>-2$. We extend our results to the case of $N$ Dyson Brownian motions (corresponding to the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble) in the presence of the same moving boundary $g(τ)=W\sqrtτ$. For $W=0$ we show that the system provides a realization of a Laguerre biorthogonal ensemble in random matrix theory. We obtain explicitly the average density near the barrier, as well as in the bulk far away from the barrier. Finally we apply our results to $N$ non-crossing Brownian bridges on the interval $[0,T]$ under a time-dependent barrier $g_B(τ)= W \sqrt{τ(1- \fracτ{T})}$.

Interestingly, this distribution has an inverse cubic tail, which implies a non-trivial $n$-dependence of the moments of the gaps. We also argue, based on numerical simulations, that this distribution is universal, i.e. it holds for more general jump distributions (not only the Laplace distribution), which are continuous, symmetric with a well defined second moment. Finally, we also compute the large deviation form of the gap distribution $p_{αn,n}(Δ)$ for $Δ=O(1)$, which turns out to be non-universal.

In this paper a simple limit procedure to construct $α$-determinantal point processes out of fermionic processes is examined. The procedure is illustrated for a model of $N$ free fermions in a harmonic potential. When the system is in the ground state, the rescaled correlation functions converge for large $N$ to determinants (of the sine kernel in the bulk and the Airy kernel at the edges). We analyse the point processes associated to a special family of excited states of fermions and show that appropriate scaling limits generate $α$-determinantal processes. While the spatial correlations far from the edge, i.e. close to the center of the trap, are well described by standard many-body techniques, such as the local density approximation (LDA), these methods fail to describe the fluctuations close to the edge of the Fermi gas, where the density is very small and the fluctuations are thus enhanced. It turns out that RMT and determinantal point processes offer a powerful toolbox to study these edge properties in great detail. Here we discuss the principal edge universality classes, that have been recently identified using these modern tools. In dimension $d=1$ and at zero temperature $T=0$, these universality classes are in one-to-one correspondence with the standard universality classes found in the classical unitary random matrix ensembles: soft edge (described by the "Airy kernel") and hard edge (described by the "Bessel kernel") universality classes. We further discuss extensions of these results to higher dimensions $d\geq 2$ and to finite temperature. Finally, we discuss correlations in the phase space, i.e., in the space of positions and momenta, characterized by the so called Wigner function.

Daily precipitation time series are composed of null entries corresponding to dry days and nonzero entries that describe the rainfall amounts on wet days. Assuming that wet days follow a Bernoulli process with success probability $p$, we show that the presence of dry days induces negative correlations between record-breaking precipitation events. The resulting non-monotonic behavior of the Fano factor of the record counting process is recovered in empirical data. We derive the full probability distribution $P(R,n)$ of the number of records $R_n$ up to time $n$, and show that for large $n$, its large deviation form coincides with that of a Poisson distribution with parameter $\ln(p\,n)$. We also study in detail the joint limit $p \to 0$, $n \to \infty$, which yields a random record model in continuous time $t = pn$.

We consider a one-dimensional gas of $N$ charged particles confined by an external harmonic potential and interacting via the one-dimensional Coulomb potential. For this system we show that in equilibrium the charges settle, on an average, uniformly and symmetrically on a finite region centred around the origin. We study the statistics of the position of the rightmost particle $x_{\max}$ and show that the limiting distribution describing its typical fluctuations is different from the Tracy-Widom distribution found in the one-dimensional log-gas. We also compute the large deviation functions which characterise the atypical fluctuations of $x_{\max}$ far away from its mean value. In addition, we study the gap between the two rightmost particles as well as the index $N_+$, i.e., the number of particles on the positive semi-axis. We compute the limiting distributions associated to the typical fluctuations of these observables as well as the corresponding large deviation functions. We provide numerical supports to our analytical predictions. Part of these results were announced in a recent Letter, Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 060601 (2017).

We compute the joint statistics of the momenta $p_i$ of $N$ non-interacting fermions in a trap, near the Fermi edge, with a particular focus on the largest one $p_{\max}$. For a $1d$ harmonic trap, momenta and positions play a symmetric role and hence, the joint statistics of momenta is identical to that of the positions. In particular, $p_{\max}$, as $x_{\max}$, is distributed according to the Tracy-Widom distribution. Here we show that novel "momentum edge statistics" emerge when the curvature of the potential vanishes, i.e. for "flat traps" near their minimum, with $V(x) \sim x^{2n}$ and $n>1$. These are based on generalisations of the Airy kernel that we obtain explicitly. The fluctuations of $p_{\max}$ are governed by new universal distributions determined from the $n$-th member of the second Painlevé hierarchy of non-linear differential equations, with connections to multicritical random matrix models. Finite temperature extensions and possible experimental signatures in cold atoms are discussed.

Our goal is two-fold: (1) For general functionals, we derive a large deviation principle in the presence of resetting and identify the large deviation rate function in terms of a variational formula involving large deviation rate functions without resetting. (2) For three examples of functionals (positive occupation time, area and absolute area), we investigate the effect of resetting by computing distributions and moments, using a formula that links the generating function with resetting to the generating function without resetting.

Our main focus is on the statistics of the gaps $d_{k,n}$ between two successive maxima $d_{k,n}=M_{k,n}-M_{k+1,n}$ where $M_{k,n}$ is the $k$-th maximum of the RW between step 1 and step $n$. In the limit of large $n$, we show that the probability density function of the gaps $P_{k,n}(Δ) = \Pr(d_{k,n} = Δ)$ reaches a stationary density $P_{k,n}(Δ) \to p_k(Δ)$. For large $k$, we demonstrate that the typical fluctuations of the gap, for $d_{k,n}= O(1/\sqrt{k})$ (and $n \to \infty$), are described by a non-trivial scaling function that is independent of $k$ and of the jump probability density function $f_p(η)$, thus corroborating our conjecture about the universality of the regime of typical fluctuations (see G. Schehr, S. N. Majumdar, Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 040601 (2012)). We also investigate the large fluctuations of the gap, for $d_{k,n} = O(1)$ (and $n \to \infty$), and show that these two regimes of typical and large fluctuations of the gaps match smoothly.

In this paper, we study the extreme statistics in the complex Ginibre ensemble of $N \times N$ random matrices with complex Gaussian entries, but with no other symmetries. All the $N$ eigenvalues are complex random variables and their joint distribution can be interpreted as a $2d$ Coulomb gas with a logarithmic repulsion between any pair of particles and in presence of a confining harmonic potential $v(r) \propto r^2$. We study the statistics of the eigenvalue with the largest modulus $r_{\max}$ in the complex plane. The typical and large fluctuations of $r_{\max}$ around its mean had been studied before, and they match smoothly to the right of the mean. However, it remained a puzzle to understand why the large and typical fluctuations to the left of the mean did not match. In this paper, we show that there is indeed an intermediate fluctuation regime that interpolates smoothly between the large and the typical fluctuations to the left of the mean. Moreover, we compute explicitly this "intermediate deviation function" (IDF) and show that it is universal, i.e. independent of the confining potential $v(r)$ as long as it is spherically symmetric and increases faster than $\ln r^2$ for large $r$ with an unbounded support. If the confining potential $v(r)$ has a finite support, i.e. becomes infinite beyond a finite radius, we show via explicit computation that the corresponding IDF is different. Interestingly, in the borderline case where the confining potential grows very slowly as $v(r) \sim \ln r^2$ for $r \gg 1$ with an unbounded support, the intermediate regime disappears and there is a smooth matching between the central part and the left large deviation regime.

We show that for large $N$, the correlations at the edge of the Fermi gas (near the wall) at zero temperature are described by a universal kernel, different from the universal edge kernel valid for smooth potentials. We compute this $d$ dimensional hard edge kernel exactly for a spherical domain and argue, using a generalized method of images, that it holds close to any sufficiently smooth boundary. As an application we compute the quantum statistics of the position of the fermion closest to the wall. Our results are then extended in several directions, including non-smooth boundaries such as a wedge, and also to finite temperature.

Exploiting the determinantal structure of the process we compute the universal correlation functions both in the bulk and at the edge of the trapped Fermi gas. The latter corresponds to the top path of the non-intersecting OU particles, and leads us to introduce and study the time-periodic Airy$_2$ process, ${\cal A}^b_2(u)$, depending on a single parameter, the period $b$. The standard Airy$_2$ process is recovered for $b=+\infty$. We discuss applications of our results to the real time quantum dynamics of trapped fermions.

We review recent advances on the record statistics of strongly correlated time series, whose entries denote the positions of a random walk or a Lévy flight on a line. After a brief survey of the theory of records for independent and identically distributed random variables, we focus on random walks. During the last few years, it was indeed realized that random walks are a very useful "laboratory" to test the effects of correlations on the record statistics. We start with the simple one-dimensional random walk with symmetric jumps (both continuous and discrete) and discuss in detail the statistics of the number of records, as well as of the ages of the records, i.e., the lapses of time between two successive record breaking events. Then we review the results that were obtained for a wide variety of random walk models, including random walks with a linear drift, continuous time random walks, constrained random walks (like the random walk bridge) and the case of multiple independent random walkers. Finally, we discuss further observables related to records, like the record increments, as well as some questions raised by physical applications of record statistics, like the effects of measurement error and noise.

While in $d=1$ the limiting distribution (in the large $N$ limit), properly centered and scaled, converges to the squared Tracy-Widom distribution of the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble in Random Matrix Theory, we show that for all $d>1$, the limiting distribution converges to the Gumbel law. We study a system of $N$ non-interacting spin-less fermions trapped in a confining potential, in arbitrary dimensions $d$ and arbitrary temperature $T$. The presence of the trap introduces an edge where the average density of fermions vanishes. Far from the edge, near the center of the trap (the so called "bulk regime"), physical properties of the fermions have traditionally been understood using the Local Density Approximation. However, this approximation drastically fails near the edge where the density vanishes. In this paper we show that, even near the edge, novel universal properties emerge, independently of the details of the confining potential. We show that for large $N$, these fermions in a confining trap, in arbitrary dimensions and at finite temperature, form a determinantal point process. As a result, any $n$-point correlation function can be expressed as an $n \times n$ determinant whose entry is called the kernel. Near the edge, we derive the large $N$ scaling form of the kernels. In $d=1$ and $T=0$, this reduces to the so called Airy kernel, that appears in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) of random matrix theory. In $d=1$ and $T>0$ we show a remarkable connection between our kernel and the one appearing in the $1+1$-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation at finite time. Consequently our result provides a finite $T$ generalization of the Tracy-Widom distribution, that describes the fluctuations of the rightmost fermion at $T=0$. In $d>1$ and $T \geq 0$, while the connection to GUE no longer holds, the process is still determinantal whose analysis provides a new class of kernels, generalizing the $1d$ Airy kernel at $T=0$ obtained in random matrix theory. Some of our finite temperature results should be testable in present-day cold atom experiments, most notably our detailed predictions for the temperature dependence of the fluctuations near the edge.

This function $Φ_{\rm drop}(H)$ is surprisingly reminiscent of the large deviation function describing the stationary fluctuations of finite size models belonging to the KPZ universality class. Thanks to a recently discovered connection between KPZ and free fermions, our results have interesting implications for the fluctuations of the rightmost fermion in a harmonic trap at high temperature and the full couting statistics at the edge.
