On comparison of estimators for proportional error nonlinear regression models in the limit of small measurement error
Abstract: In this paper, we compare maximum likelihood (ML), quasi likelihood (QL) and weighted least squares (WLS) estimators for proportional error nonlinear regression models. Literature on thermoluminescence sedimentary dating revealed another estimator similar to weighted least squares but observed responses used as weights. This estimator that we refer to as data weighted least squares (DWLS) is also… ▽ More

Bayes factors with (overly) informative priors
Abstract: Priors in which a large number of parameters are specified to be independent are dangerous; they make it hard to learn from data. I present a couple of examples from the literature and work through a bit of large sample theory to show what happens.

Inefficient Best Invariant Tests
Abstract: Test statistics which are invariant under various subgroups of the orthogonal group are shown to provide tests whose powers are asymptotically equal to their level against the usual type of contiguous alternative in models where the number of parameters is allowed to grow as the sample size increases. The result is applied to the usual analysis of variance test in the Neyman-Scott many means probl… ▽ More

Comments: Originally written in 1992. Savagely reviewed (say I) at the Annals and I lacked the courage to submit it anywhere else. It is, though, limit law in models with many parameters and so may have some relevance today, I feel

Conditional limit laws for goodness-of-fit tests
Abstract: We study the conditional distribution of goodness of fit statistics of the Cramér--von Mises type given the complete sufficient statistics in testing for exponential family models. We show that this distribution is close, in large samples, to that given by parametric bootstrap**, namely, the unconditional distribution of the statistic under the value of the parameter given by the maximum likelih… ▽ More
