Stability of the second non trivial eigenvalue of the Neumann Laplacian
Authors:
Xin Liao
Abstract:
In this paper, building on the ideas of Brasco and Pratelli (Geom. Funct. Anal., 22 (2012), 107-135), we establish a stability estimate for Bucur and Henrot's inequality (Acta Math., 222 (2019), 337-361). Their inequality asserts that, among regular sets of given measure, the disjoint union of two balls with the same radius maximizes the second non trivial eigenvalue of the Neumann Laplacian.

We first show local-in-time well-posedness of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, assuming striated regularity while no other smoothness or smallness conditions on the initial density. With these local-in-time solutions served as blocks, for \textit{less} regular initial data where the vacuum is permitted, the global-in-time well-posedness follows from the energy estimates and the propagated striated regularity of the density function, if the bulk viscosity coefficient is large enough in the two dimensional case. The global-in-time well-posedness holds also true in the three dimensional case, provided with large bulk viscosity coefficient together with small initial energy. This solves the density-patch problem in the exterior domain for the compressible model with $W^{2,p}$-Interfaces. Finally, the singular incompressible limit toward the inhomogenous incompressible model when the bulk viscosity coefficient tends to infinity is obtained.

Differential equations are important tools to portray dynamic problems, and are widely used in finance, engineering and biology. Here, multiple dynamic differential models were built innovatively, and discretized with the Runge-Kutta method. The the model parameters were estimated. The models were averaged using the Optimal weight selection method, and the consistency of such parameter estimation was verified. Numerical simulations were also conducted, and the simulated results outperformed ordinary linear models. Finally, the differential averaging model built here was used to empirically analyze the Shanghai Index 300. This method integrated the fluctuation features of multiple Shanghai Composite Index fitting models, and yielded good analytical results. This study provides a methodological reference for analysis of stock market situations, and offers research clues for the parameter estimation of differential equations.

Combining the perturbation from symmetry method with the approaches involving eigenvalue estimate and Morse index in estimating the min-max values, we obtain two kinds of existence results for multiple weak solutions to the problem above. Furthermore, we discuss the difference between the eigenvalue estimate approach and the Morse index approach in degenerate situations. Compared with the classical elliptic cases, both approaches here have their own strengths in the degenerate cases. This new phenomenon implies the results in general degenerate cases would be quite different from the situations in classical elliptic cases.

Branch-and-bound is a typical way to solve combinatorial optimization problems. This paper proposes a graph pointer network model for learning the variable selection policy in the branch-and-bound. We extract the graph features, global features and historical features to represent the solver state. The proposed model, which combines the graph neural network and the pointer mechanism, can effectively map from the solver state to the branching variable decisions. The model is trained to imitate the classic strong branching expert rule by a designed top-k Kullback-Leibler divergence loss function. Experiments on a series of benchmark problems demonstrate that the proposed approach significantly outperforms the widely used expert-designed branching rules. Our approach also outperforms the state-of-the-art machine-learning-based branch-and-bound methods in terms of solving speed and search tree size on all the test instances. In addition, the model can generalize to unseen instances and scale to larger instances.

We deal with a general distributed constrained online learning problem with privacy over time-varying networks, where a class of nondecomposable objectives are considered. Under this setting, each node only controls a part of the global decision, and the goal of all nodes is to collaboratively minimize the global cost over a time horizon $T$ while guarantees the security of the transmitted information. For such problems, we first design a novel generic algorithm framework, named as DPSDA, of differentially private distributed online learning using the Laplace mechanism and the stochastic variants of dual averaging method. Note that in the dual updates, all nodes of DPSDA employ the noise-corrupted gradients for more generality. Then, we propose two algorithms, named as DPSDA-C and DPSDA-PS, under this framework. In DPSDA-C, the nodes implement a circulation-based communication in the primal updates so as to alleviate the disagreements over time-varying undirected networks. In addition, for the extension to time-varying directed ones, the nodes implement the broadcast-based push-sum dynamics in DPSDA-PS, which can achieve average consensus over arbitrary directed networks. Theoretical results show that both algorithms attain an expected regret upper bound in $\mathcal{O}( \sqrt{T} )$ when the objective function is convex, which matches the best utility achievable by cutting-edge algorithms. Finally, numerical experiment results on both synthetic and real-world datasets verify the effectiveness of our algorithms.

This paper investigates two accelerated primal-dual mirror dynamical approaches for smooth and nonsmooth convex optimization problems with affine and closed, convex set constraints. In the smooth case, an accelerated primal-dual mirror dynamical approach (APDMD) based on accelerated mirror descent and primal-dual framework is proposed and accelerated convergence properties of primal-dual gap, feasibility measure and the objective function value along with trajectories of APDMD are derived by the Lyapunov analysis method. Then, we extend APDMD into two distributed dynamical approaches to deal with two types of distributed smooth optimization problems, i.e., distributed constrained consensus problem (DCCP) and distributed extended monotropic optimization (DEMO) with accelerated convergence guarantees. Moreover, in the nonsmooth case, we propose a smoothing accelerated primal-dual mirror dynamical approach (SAPDMD) with the help of smoothing approximation technique and the above APDMD. We further also prove that primal-dual gap, objective function value and feasibility measure of SAPDMD have the same accelerated convergence properties as APDMD by choosing the appropriate smooth approximation parameters. Later, we propose two smoothing accelerated distributed dynamical approaches to deal with nonsmooth DEMO and DCCP to obtain accelerated and efficient solutions. Finally, numerical experiments are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed accelerated mirror dynamical approaches.

In this paper, we give a unified construction of vertex algebras arising from infinite-dimensional Lie algebras, including the affine Kac-Moody algebras, Virasoro algebras, Heisenberg algebras and their higher rank analogs, orbifolds and deformations. We define a notion of what we call quasi vertex Lie algebra to unify these Lie algebras. Starting from any (maximal) quasi vertex Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, we construct a corresponding vertex Lie algebra ${\mathfrak{g}}_0$, and establish a canonical isomorphism between the category of restricted $\mathfrak{g}$-modules and that of equivariant $φ$-coordinated quasi $V_{\mathfrak{g}_0}$-modules, where $V_{\mathfrak{g}_0}$ is the universal envelo** vertex algebra of ${\mathfrak{g}}_0$. This unified all the previous constructions of vertex algebras from infinite-dimensional Lie algebras and shed light on the way to associate vertex algebras with Lie algebras.

Our main result shows that the solution $u$ scatters for any given initial data $u_0$ with finite mass and energy.
The main new ingredient in our approach is to approximate (NLS) in the large-scale case by a relevant dispersive continuous resonant (DCR) system. The proof of global well-posedness and scattering of the new (DCR) system is greatly inspired by the fundamental works of Dodson \cite{D3,D1,D2} in his study of scattering for the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The analysis of (DCR) system allows us to utilize the additional regularity of the smooth nonlinear profile so that the celebrated concentration-compactness/rigidity argument of Kenig and Merle applies.

Let $\{ (ξ_{ni}, η_{ni}), 1\leq i \leq n, n\geq 1 \}$ be a triangular array of independent bivariate elliptical random vectors with the same distribution function as $(S_{1}, ρ_{n}S_{1}+\sqrt{1-ρ_{n}^2}S_{2})$, $ρ_{n}\in (0,1)$, where $(S_{1},S_{2})$ is a bivariate spherical random vector. For the distribution function of radius $\sqrt{S_{1}^2+S_{2}^2}$ belonging to the max-domain of attraction of the Weibull distribution, Hashorva (2006) derived the limiting distribution of maximum of this triangular array if convergence rate of $ρ_{n}$ to $1$ is given. In this paper, under the refinement of the rate of convergence of $ρ_{n}$ to $1$ and the second-order regular variation of the distributional tail of radius, precise second-order distributional expansions of the normalized maxima of bivariate elliptical triangular arrays are established.

In this paper, we study the asymptotic behaviors of the extreme of mixed skew-t distribution. We considered limits on distribution and density of maximum of mixed skew-t distribution under linear and power normalization, and further derived their higher-order expansions, respectively. Examples are given to support our findings.

Compared with our previous paper \cite{LZ}, here we remove the smallness condition on the jump, $|η_1-η_2|,$ moreover, the techniques used in the present paper are completely different from those in \cite{LZ}.

In this paper, two accelerated divide-and-conquer algorithms are proposed for the symmetric tridiagonal eigenvalue problem, which cost $O(N^2r)$ {flops} in the worst case, where $N$ is the dimension of the matrix and $r$ is a modest number depending on the distribution of eigenvalues. Both of these algorithms use hierarchically semiseparable (HSS) matrices to approximate some intermediate eigenvector matrices which are Cauchy-like matrices and are off-diagonally low-rank. The difference of these two versions lies in using different HSS construction algorithms, one (denoted by {ADC1}) uses a structured low-rank approximation method and the other ({ADC2}) uses a randomized HSS construction algorithm. For the ADC2 algorithm, a method is proposed to estimate the off-diagonal rank. Numerous experiments have been done to show their stability and efficiency. These algorithms are implemented in parallel in a shared memory environment, and some parallel implementation details are included. Comparing the ADCs with highly optimized multithreaded libraries such as Intel MKL, we find that ADCs could be more than 6x times faster for some large matrices with few deflations.

In dimension two, thanks to a local-in-time existence result of a unique strong solution in critical Besov spaces given in \cite{Danchin-Liao}, for arbitrary large initial data, we will show that this unique strong solution exists globally in time, by a weak-strong uniqueness argument.

In particular, the largest case $B^1_{\infty,1}$ and the case of Hölder spaces $C^{1,α}$ are permitted.
The local in time well-posedness result is proved, under an additional $L^2$ hypothesis on the initial inhomogeneity and velocity field. A new a priori estimate for parabolic equations in endpoint spaces $B^s_{\infty,r}$ is presented, which is the key to the proof.
In dimension two, we are able to give a lower bound for the lifespan, such that the solutions tend to be globally defined when the initial inhomogeneity is small. There we will show a refined a priori estimate in endpoint Besov spaces for transport equations with \emph{non solenoidal} transport velocity field.

We prove a local in time well-posedness result in these classes for general initial densities and velocity fields. Moreover, we are able to show a continuation criterion and a lower bound for the lifespan of the solutions.
The proof of the results relies on Littlewood-Paley decomposition and paradifferential calculus, and on refined commutator estimates in Chemin-Lerner spaces.

Firstly, we consider the case of $p\in[2,4]$, with no further restrictions on the initial data. Then we tackle the case of any $p\in\,]1,\infty]$, but requiring also a finite energy assumption. The extreme value $p=\infty$ can be treated due to a new a priori estimate for parabolic equations. At last we also briefly consider the case of any $p\in ]1,\infty[$ but with smallness condition on initial inhomogeneity.
A continuation criterion and a lower bound for the lifespan of the solution are proved as well. In particular in dimension 2, the lower bound goes to infinity as the initial density tends to a constant.

Let $X$ be a nonsingular variety defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$, and $D$ be a free divisor with Jacobian ideal of linear type. We compute the Chern class of the sheaf of logarithmic derivations along $D$ and compare it with the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of the hypersurface complement. Our result establishes a conjecture by Aluffi raised in \cite{hyparr}.

Let $X$ be a nonsingular complex projective variety and $D$ a locally quasi-homogeneous free divisor in $X$. In this paper we study a numerical relation between the Chern class of the sheaf of logarithmic derivations on $X$ with respect to $D$, and the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of the complement of $D$ in $X$. Our result confirms a conjectural formula for these classes, at least after push-forward to projective space; it proves the full form of the conjecture for locally quasi-homogeneous free divisors in $\mathbb P^n$. The result generalizes several previously known results. For example, it recovers a formula of M. Mustata and H. Schenck for Chern classes for free hyperplane arrangements. Our main tools are Riemann-Roch and the logarithmic comparison theorem of Calderon-Moreno, Castro-Jimenez, Narvaez-Macarro, and David Mond. As a subproduct of the main argument, we also obtain a schematic Bertini statement for locally quasi-homogeneous divisors.

This work is devoted to the well-posedness issue for the low-Mach number limit system obtained from the full compressible Navier-Stokes system, in the whole space. In the case where the initial temperature (or density) is close to a positive constant, we establish the local existence and uniqueness of a solution in critical homogeneous Besov spaces. If, in addition, the initial velocity is small then we show that the solution exists for all positive time. In the fully nonhomogeneous case, we establish the local well-posedness in nonhomogeneous Besov spaces (still with critical regularity) for arbitrarily large data with positive initial temperature. Our analysis strongly relies on the use of a modified divergence-free velocity which allows to reduce the system to a nonlinear coupling between a parabolic equation and some evolutionary Stokes system. The Lebesgue exponents of the Besov spaces for the temperature and the (modified) velocity, need not be the same. This enables us to consider initial data in Besov spaces with a negative index of regularity.
