Abstract:
We develop the deformation theory of Calabi-Yau threefolds, by which we mean 3-dimensional complex manifolds with a nowhere-vanishing holomorphic 3-form, on manifolds with boundary. The boundary data is a closed, real 3-form on the 5-dimensional boundary. The boundary data is a closed, real 3-form on the 5-dimensional boundary. In the case of strongly pseudoconvex boundary, we obtain an analogue of Hitchin's local Torelli Theorem for compact manifolds, modulo a finite dimensional obstruction space, which we show is zero in many cases of interest.

Volume functionals on pseudoconvex hypersurfaces
Authors:
Simon Donaldson,

Abstract:
We study an intrinsic volume form defined on a pseudoconvex hypersurface in a complex Calabi-Yau manifold. We compute first and second variation formulae and discuss possible analogues of the affine isoperimetric inequality. In the last section of the paper we explore infinite dimensional aspects, including moment maps for diffeomorphism group actions.

Closed 3-forms in five dimensions and embedding problems
Authors:

Abstract:
We consider the question if a five dimensional manifold can be embedded into a Calabi-Yau manifold of complex dimension three such that the real part of the holomorphic volume form induces a given closed 3-form on the 5-manifold. We define an open set of 3-forms in dimension five which we call strongly pseudoconvex, and show that for closed strongly pseudoconvex 3-forms the perturbative version of…

Insect wings can undergo significant deformation during flap** motion owing to inertial, elastic and aerodynamic forces. Changes in shape then alter aerodynamic forces, resulting in a fully coupled Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) problem. Here, we present detailed three-dimensional FSI simulations of deformable blowfly (Calliphora vomitoria) wings in flap** flight. A wing model is proposed using a multi-parameter mass-spring approach, chosen for its implementation simplicity and computational efficiency. We train the model to reproduce static elasticity measurements by optimizing its parameters using a genetic algorithm with covariance matrix adaptation (CMA-ES). Wing models trained with experimental data are then coupled to a high-performance flow solver run on massively parallel supercomputers. Different features of the modeling approach and the intra-species variability of elastic properties are discussed. We found that individuals with different wing stiffness exhibit similar aerodynamic properties characterized by dimensionless forces and power at the same Reynolds number. We further study the influence of wing flexibility by comparing between the flexible wings and their rigid counterparts. Under equal prescribed kinematic conditions for rigid and flexible wings, wing flexibility improves lift-to-drag ratio as well as lift-to-power ratio and reduces peak force observed during wing rotation.

Deformations of asymptotically conical Spin(7)-manifolds
Authors:

Abstract:
We consider the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_ν$ of torsion-free, asymptotically conical (AC) Spin(7)-structures which are defined on the same manifold and asymptotic to the same Spin(7)-cone with decay rate $ν<0$. We show that $\mathcal{M}_ν$ is an orbifold if $ν$ is a generic rate in the non-$L^2$ regime $(-4,0)$. Infinitesimal deformations are given by topological data and solutions to a non-ellipt…

We show that $\mathcal{M}_ν$ is an orbifold if $ν$ is a generic rate in the non-$L^2$ regime $(-4,0)$. Infinitesimal deformations are given by topological data and solutions to a non-elliptic first-order PDE system on the compact link of the asymptotic cone. As an application, we show that the classical Bryant-Salamon metric on the bundle of positive spinors on $S^4$ has no continuous deformations as an AC Spin(7)-metric.

Geometric transitions with Spin(7) holonomy via a dynamical system

We clarify the global geometry of two 1-parameter families of cohomogeneity one Spin(7) holonomy metrics with generic orbit the Aloff--Wallach space $N(1,-1) \cong \mathrm{SU}(3)/\mathrm{U}(1)$ and singular orbits $S^5$ and $\mathbb{C}P^2$, which at short distance were shown to exist by Reidegeld. The two families fit into the geography of previously known families of cohomogeneity one metrics with exceptional holonomy and provide a Spin(7) analogue of the well-known conifold transition in the setting of Calabi--Yau 3-folds. Furthermore, we discover that there is another transition to families of Spin(7) holonomy metrics which have a similar asymptotic behaviour on one end, but are singular on the other end. We obtain our results by relating the Spin(7)-equations to a simple dynamical system on a 3-dimensional cube.
