We propose a new concept of weak solution to the equations of compressible magnetohydrodynamics driven by large boundary data. The system of the underlying field equations is solvable globally in time in the out of equilibrium regime characteristic for turbulence. The weak solutions comply with the weak-strong uniqueness principle; they coincide with the classical solution of the problem as long as the latter exists. The choice of constitutive relations is motivated by applications in stellar magnetoconvection.

In this paper we show that every skew morphism of a cyclic group of order $n$ is smooth if and only if $n=2^en_1$, where $0 \le e \le 4$ and $n_1$ is an odd square-free number. A partial solution to a similar problem on non-cyclic abelian groups is also given.

For a dihedral group $\mathrm{D}_{2n}$ of order $2n$, assume that $\mathrm{D}_{2n}$ has the $m$-DCI property for some $1 \leq m\leq n-1$. Then it is shown that $n$ is odd, and if further $p+1\leq m\leq n-1$ for an odd prime divisor $p$ of $n$, then $p^2\nmid n$. Furthermore, if $n$ is a power of a prime $q$, then $\mathrm{D}_{2n}$ has the $m$-DCI property if and only if either $n=q$, or $q$ is odd and $1\leq m\leq q$.

The formulas are expressed through Chebyshev polynomials. We prove that the number of rooted spanning forests can be represented in the form $f(n)=p\,f(H)a(n)^2,$ where $a(n)$ is an integer sequence and $p$ is a prescribed natural number depending on the number of odd elements in the set of $s_{i,j}.$ Finally, we find an asymptotic formula for $f(n)$ through the Mahler measure of the associated Laurent polynomial.

Recently numerous machine learning based methods for combinatorial optimization problems have been proposed that learn to construct solutions in a sequential decision process via reinforcement learning. While these methods can be easily combined with search strategies like sampling and beam search, it is not straightforward to integrate them into a high-level search procedure offering strong search guidance. Bello et al. (2016) propose active search, which adjusts the weights of a (trained) model with respect to a single instance at test time using reinforcement learning. While active search is simple to implement, it is not competitive with state-of-the-art methods because adjusting all model weights for each test instance is very time and memory intensive. Instead of updating all model weights, we propose and evaluate three efficient active search strategies that only update a subset of parameters during the search. The proposed methods offer a simple way to significantly improve the search performance of a given model and outperform state-of-the-art machine learning based methods on combinatorial problems, even surpassing the well-known heuristic solver LKH3 on the capacitated vehicle routing problem. Finally, we show that (efficient) active search enables learned models to effectively solve instances that are much larger than those seen during training.

We prove global existence of weak solutions for a version of one velocity Baer-Nunziato system with dissipation describing a mixture of two non interacting viscous compressible fluids in a piecewise regular Lipschitz domain with general inflow/outfow boundary conditions. The geometrical setting is general enough to comply with most current domains important for applications as, for example, (curved) pipes of picewise regular and axis-dependent cross sections. As far as the existence proof is concerned, we adapt to the system the nowaday's classical Lions-Feireisl approach to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations which is combined with a generalization of the theory of renormalized solutions to the transport equations in the spirit of Vasseur-Wen-Yu. The results related to the families of transport equations presented in this paper extend/improve some of statements of the theory of renormalized solutions, and they are therefore of independent interest.

The construction of weak solutions to compressible Navier-Stokes equations via a numerical method (including a rigorous proof of the convergence) is in a short supply, and so far, available only for one sole numerical scheme suggested in Karper [{\em Numer. Math.}, 125(3) : 441--510, 2013] for the no slip boundary conditions and the isentropic pressure with adiabatic coefficient $γ>3$. Here we consider the same problem for the general non zero inflow-outflow boundary conditions, which is definitely more appropriate setting from the point of view of applications, but which is essentially more involved as far as the existence of weak solutions is concerned. There is a few recent proofs of existence of weak solutions in this setting, but none of them is performed via a numerical method. The goal of this paper is to fill this gap.
The existence of weak solutions on the continuous level requires several tools of functional and harmonic analysis and differential geometry whose numerical counterparts are not known. Our main strategy therefore consists in rewriting of the numerical scheme in its variational form modulo remainders and to apply and/or to adapt to the new variational formulation the tools developed in the theoretical analysis. In addition to the result, which is new, the synergy between numerical and theoretical analysis is the main originality of the present paper.

We propose a modification of Karper scheme [Numer. Math. 125:441-510, 2013] in order to accommodate the non zero boundary data, prove existence of its solutions, establish the stability and uniform estimates, derive a convenient consistency formulation of the balance laws and use it to show the weak convergence of the numerical solutions to a dissipative solution with the Reynold defect introduced in Abbatiello et al. [Preprint Arxiv 1912.12896]. If the target system admits a strong solution then the convergence is strong towards the strong solution. Moreover, we establish the convergence rate of the strong convergence in terms of the size of the space discretization h (which is supposed to be comparable with the time step). In the case of non zero inflow/outflow boundary data, all results are new. The latter result is new also for the no-slip boundary conditions.

First, we obtain sharp $L^p$--$L^q$ resolvent estimates for $-Δ^\ast$ for admissible $p,q$. This extends the particular case $q=\frac p{p-1}$ due to Barceló et al. \cite{BFPRV} and Cossetti \cite{Co19}. Secondly, we show failure of uniform Sobolev estimate and Carleman estimate for $-Δ^\ast$. For the purpose we directly analyze the Fourier multiplier of the resolvent. This allows us to prove not only the upper bound but also the lower bound on the resolvent, so we get the sharp $L^p$--$L^q$ bounds for the resolvent of $-Δ^\ast$. Strikingly, the relevant uniform Sobolev and Carleman estimates turn out to be false for the Lamé operator $-Δ^\ast$ even though the uniform resolvent estimates for $-Δ^\ast$ are valid for certain range of $p, q$. This contrasts with the classical result regarding the Laplacian $Δ$ due to Kenig, Ruiz, and Sogge \cite{KRS87} in which the uniform resolvent estimate plays crucial role in proving the uniform Sobolev and Carleman estimates for $Δ$. We also describe locations of the $L^q$-eigenvalues of $-Δ^\ast+V$ with complex potential $V$ by making use of the sharp $L^p$--$L^q$ resolvent estimates for $-Δ^\ast$.

Our objective was to develop and test a new concept (affinity) analogous to multimorbidity of chronic conditions for individuals at census tract level in Memphis, TN. The use of affinity will improve the surveillance of multiple chronic conditions and facilitate the design of effective interventions. We used publicly available chronic condition data (Center for Disease Control and Prevention 500 Cities project), socio-demographic data (US Census Bureau), and demographic data (Environmental Systems Research Institute). A geo-distinctive pattern of clustered chronic affinity associated with socio-economic deprivation wasobserved. Statistical results confirmed that neighborhoods with higher rates of crime, poverty, and unemploy-ment were associated with an increased likelihood of having a higher affinity among major chronic conditions. With the inclusion of smoking in the model, however, only the crime prevalence was statistically significantlyassociated with the chronic affinity. Chronic affinity disadvantages were disproportionately accumulated in socially disadvantagedareas. We showed links between commonly co-observed chronic diseases at the population level and systemat-ically explored the complexity of affinity and socio-economic disparities. Our affinity score, based on publiclyavailable datasets, served as a surrogate for multimorbidity at the population level, which may assist policy-makers and public health planners to identify urgent hot spots for chronic disease and allocate clinical, medicaland healthcare resources efficiently.

We consider a one-dimensional lattice system of unbounded, real-valued spins with arbitrary strong, quadratic, finite-range interaction. We show the equivalence of the grand canonical ensemble (gce) and the canonical ensemble (ce), in the sense of observables and correlations. A direct consequence is that the correlations of the ce decay exponentially plus a volume correction term. The volume correction term is uniform in the external field, the mean spin and scales optimally in the system size. This extends prior results of Cancrini & Martinelli for bounded discrete spins to unbounded continuous spins. The result is obtained by adapting Cancrini & Martinelli's method combined with authors' recent approach on continuous real-valued spin systems.

So far existence of dissipative weak solutions for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations (i.e. weak solutions satisfying the relative energy inequality) is known only in the case of boundary conditions with non zero inflow/outflow (i.e., in particular, when the normal component of the velocity on the boundary of the ow domain is equal to zero). Most of physical applications (as ows in wind tunnels, pipes, reactors of jet engines) requires to consider non-zero inflow-outflow boundary condtions. We prove existence of dissipative weak solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in barotropic regime (adiabatic coefficient gamma>3/2, in three dimensions, gamma>1 in two dimensions)with large velocity prescribed at the boundary and large density prescribed at the inflow boundary of a bounded piecewise regular Lipschitz domain, without any restriction neither on the shape of the inflow/outflow boundaries nor on the shape of the domain. It is well known that the relative energy inequality has many applications, e.g., to investigation of incompressible or inviscid limits, to the dimension reduction of flows, to the error estimates of numerical schemes. In this paper we deal with one of its basic applications, namely weak-strong uniqueness principle.

We introduce a relative entropy of the system, which can capture how close a solution at a given time is to a given shock wave in almost $L^2$-sense. When the shock strength is small enough, we show the functional is non-increasing in time for any large initial perturbation. The contraction property holds independently of the strength of the diffusion.

Uniqueness in the Calderón problem in dimension bigger than two was usually studied under the assumption that conductivity has bounded gradient. For conductivities with unbounded gradients uniqueness results have not been known until recent years. The latest result due to Haberman basically relies on the optimal $L^2$ restriction estimate for hypersurface which is known as the Tomas-Stein restriction theorem. In the course of developments of the Fourier restriction problem bilinear and multilinear generalizations of the (adjoint) restriction estimates under suitable transversality condition between surfaces have played important roles. Since such advanced machineries usually provide strengthened estimates, it seems natural to attempt to utilize these estimates to improve the known results. In this paper, we make use of the sharp bilinear restriction estimates, which is due to Tao, and relax the regularity assumption on conductivity. We also consider the inverse problem for the Schrödinger operator with potentials contained in the Sobolev spaces of negative orders.

We conjecture that, if $s+t>n$ with $s<t$, then there is no regular map of order $2^n$ with type $\{2^s, 2^t\}$, and we confirm the conjecture for $t=n-2$ and $n-3$.

In this paper, we present a complete picture of sharp $L^p$--$L^q$ resolvent estimates, which may depend on $z$. We also obtain the sharp resolvent estimates for the fractional Laplacians and a new result for the Bochner--Riesz operators of negative index.

We consider a one-dimensional lattice system of unbounded, real-valued spins with arbitrary strong, quadratic, finite-range interaction. We show that the canonical ensemble (ce) satisfies a uniform logarithmic Sobolev inequality (LSI). The LSI constant is uniform in the boundary data, the external field and scales optimally in the system size. This extends a classical result of H.T. Yau from discrete to unbounded, real-valued spins. It also extends prior results of Landim, Panizo & Yau or Menz for unbounded, real-valued spins from absent- or weak- to strong-interaction. The proof of the LSI uses a combination of the two-scale approach and a block-decomposition technique introduced by Zegarlinski. Main ingredients are the strict convexity of the coarse-grained Hamiltonian, the equivalence of ensembles and the decay of correlations in the ce. Those ingredients were recently provided by the authors.

We consider a one-dimensional lattice system of unbounded, real-valued spins with arbitrary strong, quadratic, finite-range interaction. We show the equivalence of correlations of the grand canonical (gce) and the canonical ensemble (ce). As a corollary we obtain that the correlations of the ce decay exponentially plus a volume correction term. Then, we use the decay of correlation to verify a conjecture that the infinite-volume Gibbs measure of the ce is unique on a one-dimensional lattice. For the equivalence of correlations, we modify a method that was recently used by the authors to show the equivalence of the ce and the gce on the level of thermodynamic functions. In this article we also show that the equivalence of the ce and the gce holds on the level of observables. One should be able to extend the methods and results to graphs with bounded degree as long as the gce has a sufficient strong decay of correlations.

We consider the problem of empirical Bayes estimation of multiple variances when provided with sample variances. Assuming an arbitrary prior on the variances, we derive different versions of the Bayes estimators using different loss functions. For one particular loss function, the resulting Bayes estimator relies on the marginal cumulative distribution function of the sample variances only. When replacing it with the empirical distribution function, we obtain an empirical Bayes version called F-modeling based empirical Bayes estimator of variances. We provide theoretical properties of this estimator and further demonstrate its advantages through extensive simulations and real data analysis.

The estimates are consequences of the uniform Sobolev type estimates for second order differential operators due to Kenig-Ruiz-Sogge \cite{KRS} and Jeong-Kwon-Lee \cite{JKL}. The range of $p,q$ for which the uniform Sobolev type estimates hold was completely characterized for the second order differential operators with nondegenerate principal part. But the optimal range of $p,q$ for which the Carleman estimate holds has not been clarified before. When $P(D)=Δ$, $\square$, or the heat operator, we obtain a complete characterization of the admissible $p,q$ for the aforementioned type of Carleman estimate. For this purpose we investigate $L^p$-$L^q$ boundedness of related multiplier operators. As applications, we also obtain some unique continuation results.

We consider a one-dimensional lattice system of unbounded, real-valued spins. We allow arbitrary strong, attractive, nearest-neighbor interaction. We show that the free energy of the canonical ensemble converges uniformly in $C^2$ to the free energy of the grand canonical ensembles. The error estimates are quantitative. A direct consequence is that the free energy of the canonical ensemble is uniformly strictly convex for large systems. Another consequence is a quantitative local Cramér theorem which yields the strict convexity of the coarse-grained Hamiltonian. With small adaptations, the argument could be generalized to systems with finite-range interactions on a graph, as long as the degree of the graph is uniformly bounded and the associated grand canonical ensemble has uniform decay of correlations.

Let $χ(H)$ and $χ_l(H)$ be the chromatic number and the list chromatic number of $H$, respectively. A graph $H$ is called {\em chromatic-choosable} if $χ_l (H) = χ(H)$. It is an interesting problem to find graphs that are chromatic-choosable. A natural question raised by Xuding Zhu (2012) is whether there exists a constant integer $k$ such that $G^k$ is chromatic-choosable for every graph $G$. Motivated by the List Total Coloring Conjecture, Kostochka and Woodall (2001) asked whether $G^2$ is chromatic-choosable for every graph $G$. Kim and Park (2013) answered the Kostochka and Woodall's question in the negative by finding a family of graphs whose squares are complete multipartite graphs with partite sets of equal and unbounded size. In this paper, we answer Zhu's question by showing that for every integer $k \geq 2$, there exists a graph $G$ such that $G^k$ is not chromatic-choosable. Moreover, for any fixed $k$ we show that the value $χ_l(G^k) - χ(G^k)$ can be arbitrarily large.

Abstract:
The number of topologies and non-homeomorphic topologies on a fixed finite set are now known up to $n=18$, $n=16$ but still no complete formula yet (Sloane). There are one to one correspondence among topologies, preorder and digraphs. In this article, we enumerate topologies and non-homeomorphic topologies whose underlying graph is a given finite graph.
