This paper presents a numerical optimization algorithm for generating approach and landing trajectories for a six-degree-of-freedom (6-DoF) aircraft. We improve on the existing research on aircraft landing trajectory generation by formulating the trajectory optimization problem with additional real-world operational constraints, including 6-DoF aircraft dynamics, runway alignment, constant wind field, and obstacle avoidance, to obtain a continuous-time nonconvex optimal control problem. Particularly, the runway alignment constraint enforces the trajectory of the aircraft to be aligned with the runway only during the final approach phase. This is a novel feature that is essential for preventing an approach that is either too steep or too shallow. The proposed method models the runway alignment constraint through a multi-phase trajectory planning scheme, imposing alignment conditions exclusively during the final approach phase. We compare this formulation with the existing state-triggered constraint formulation for runway alignment. To solve the formulated problem, we design a novel sequential convex programming algorithm called xPTR that extends the penalized trust-region (PTR) algorithm by incorporating an extrapolation step to expedite convergence. We validate the proposed method through extensive numerical simulations, including a Monte Carlo study, to evaluate the robustness of the algorithm to varying initial conditions.

We propose a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) framework based on a direct optimal control method that ensures continuous-time constraint satisfaction and accurate evaluation of the running cost, without compromising computational efficiency. We leverage the recently proposed successive convexification framework for trajectory optimization, where: (1) the path constraints and running cost are equivalently reformulated by augmenting the system dynamics, (2) multiple shooting is used for exact discretization, and (3) a convergence-guaranteed sequential convex programming (SCP) algorithm, the prox-linear method, is used to solve the discretized receding-horizon optimal control problems. The resulting NMPC framework is computationally efficient, owing to its support for warm-starting and premature termination of SCP, and its reliance on first-order information only. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed NMPC framework by means of a numerical example with reference-tracking and obstacle avoidance. The implementation is available at https://github.com/UW-ACL/nmpc-ctcs

We present successive convexification, a real-time-capable solution method for nonconvex trajectory optimization, with continuous-time constraint satisfaction and guaranteed convergence, that only requires first-order information. The proposed framework combines several key methods to solve a large class of nonlinear optimal control problems: (i) exterior penalty-based reformulation of the path constraints; (ii) generalized time-dilation; (iii) multiple-shooting discretization; (iv) $\ell_1$ exact penalization of the nonconvex constraints; and (v) the prox-linear method, a sequential convex programming (SCP) algorithm for convex-composite minimization. The reformulation of the path constraints enables continuous-time constraint satisfaction even on sparse discretization grids and obviates the need for mesh refinement heuristics. Through the prox-linear method, we guarantee convergence of the solution method to stationary points of the penalized problem and guarantee that the converged solutions that are feasible with respect to the discretized and control-parameterized optimal control problem are also Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) points. Furthermore, we highlight the specialization of this property to global minimizers of convex optimal control problems, wherein the reformulated path constraints cannot be represented by canonical cones, i.e., in the form required by existing convex optimization solvers. In addition to theoretical analysis, we demonstrate the effectiveness and real-time capability of the proposed framework with numerical examples based on popular optimal control applications: dynamic obstacle avoidance and rocket landing.

Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) plays a pivotal role in describing the dynamics of plasma and conductive fluids, essential for understanding phenomena such as the structure and evolution of stars and galaxies, and in nuclear fusion for plasma motion through ideal MHD equations. Solving these hyperbolic PDEs requires sophisticated numerical methods, presenting computational challenges due to complex structures and high costs. Recent advances introduce neural operators like the Fourier Neural Operator (FNO) as surrogate models for traditional numerical analyses. This study explores a modified Flux Fourier neural operator model to approximate the numerical flux of ideal MHD, offering a novel approach that outperforms existing neural operator models by enabling continuous inference, generalization outside sampled distributions, and faster computation compared to classical numerical schemes.

We consider the Calogero--Moser derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation (CM-DNLS), which is an $L^{2}$-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation with explicit solitons, self-duality, and pseudo-conformal symmetry. More importantly, this equation is known to be completely integrable in the Hardy space $L_{+}^{2}$ and the solutions in this class are referred to as \emph{chiral} solutions. A rigorous PDE analysis of this equation with complete integrability was recently initiated by Gérard and Lenzmann.
Our main result constructs smooth, chiral, and finite energy finite-time blow-up solutions with mass arbitrarily close to that of soliton, answering the global regularity question for chiral solutions raised by Gérard and Lenzmann. The blow-up rate obtained for these solutions is different from the pseudo-conformal rate. Our proof also gives a construction of a codimension one set of smooth finite energy initial data (but without addressing chirality) leading to the same blow-up dynamics. Our blow-up construction in the Hardy space might also be contrasted with the global well-posedness of the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation (DNLS), which is another integrable $L^{2}$-critical Schrödinger equation.
The overall scheme of our proof is the forward construction of blow-up dynamics with modulation analysis and is not reliant on complete integrability. We begin with develo** a linear theory for the near soliton dynamics. We discover a nontrivial conjugation identity, which unveils a surprising connection from the linearized (CM-DNLS) to the 1D free Schrödinger equation, which is a crucial ingredient for overcoming the difficulties from the non-local nonlinearity. Another principal challenge in this work, the slow decay of soliton, is overcome by introducing a trick of decomposing solutions depending on topologies, which we believe is of independent interest.

In this paper, we generalize the geometric mean of two positive definite matrices to that of third-order tensors using the notion of T-product. Specifically, we define the geometric mean of two T-positive definite tensors and verify several properties that "mean" should satisfy including the idempotence and the commutative property, and so on. Moreover, it is shown that the geometric mean is a unique T-positive definite solution of an algebraic Riccati tensor equation and can be expressed as solutions of algebraic Riccati matrix equations. In addition, we investigate the Riemannian manifold associated with the geometric mean for T-positive definite tensors, considering it as a totally geodesic embedded submanifold of the Riemannian manifold associated with the case of matrices. It is particularly shown that the geometric mean of two T-positive definite tensors is the midpoint of a unique geodesic joining the tensors, and the manifold is a Cartan-Hadamard-Riemannian manifold.

Funnel synthesis refers to a procedure for synthesizing a time-varying controlled invariant set and an associated control law around a nominal trajectory. The computation of the funnel involves solving a continuous-time differential equation or inequality, ensuring the invariance of the funnel. Previous approaches often compromise the invariance property of the funnel; for example, they may enforce the equation or the inequality only at discrete temporal nodes and not having formal guarantee of invariance at all times. This paper proposes a computational funnel synthesis method that can satisfy the invariance of the funnel without such compromises. We derive a finite number of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) that imply the satifaction of a continuous-time differential linear matrix inequality guaranteeing the invariance of the funnel at all times from the initial to the final time. To this end, we utilize LMI conditions ensuring matrix copositivity, which then imply continuous-time invariance. The primary contribution of the paper is to prove that the resulting funnel is indeed invariant over a finite time horizon. We validate the proposed method via a three-dimensional trajectory planning and control problem with obstacle avoidance constraints.

Traditionally, classical numerical schemes have been employed to solve partial differential equations (PDEs) using computational methods. Recently, neural network-based methods have emerged. Despite these advancements, neural network-based methods, such as physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) and neural operators, exhibit deficiencies in robustness and generalization. To address these issues, numerous studies have integrated classical numerical frameworks with machine learning techniques, incorporating neural networks into parts of traditional numerical methods. In this study, we focus on hyperbolic conservation laws by replacing traditional numerical fluxes with neural operators. To this end, we developed loss functions inspired by established numerical schemes related to conservation laws and approximated numerical fluxes using Fourier neural operators (FNOs). Our experiments demonstrated that our approach combines the strengths of both traditional numerical schemes and FNOs, outperforming standard FNO methods in several respects. For instance, we demonstrate that our method is robust, has resolution invariance, and is feasible as a data-driven method. In particular, our method can make continuous predictions over time and exhibits superior generalization capabilities with out-of-distribution (OOD) samples, which are challenges that existing neural operator methods encounter.

Here the degenerate zeta and degenerate Hurwitz zeta function are respectively degenerate versions of the Riemann zeta and Hurwitz zeta function. We show that several infinite sums involving the degenerate higher-order harmonic numbers can be expressed in terms of the degenerate zeta function. Furthermore, we demonstrate that an infinite sum involving finite sums of products of the degenerate harmonic numbers can be represented by using the degenerate Hurwitz zeta function.

We derive new types of generating functions of the $λ$-Stirling numbers of both kinds which are related to the reciprocals of the generalized rising factorials. Furthermore, some related identities are also derived from those generating functions. In addition, all the corresponding results to the $λ$-Stirling numbers of both kinds are obtained also for the $λ$-analogues of r-Stirling numbers of both kinds which are generalizations of those numbers.

Quality control in the manufacturing industry has improved with the use of artificial intelligence (AI). However, the manual inspection of trimming die designs, which is time-consuming and prone to errors, is still done by engineers. This study introduces an automatic design inspection system for automobile trimming dies by integrating AI modules and computer-aided design (CAD) software. The AI modules replace engineers' judgment, and the CAD software carries out operations requested by the AI modules. The inspection process involves a zigzag interaction between the AI modules and CAD software, enabling one-click operation without expert intervention. The AI modules are CAD-independent and data-efficient, making them adaptable to other CAD software. They achieve high performance even with limited training data, with an average length measurement error of only 2.4%. The inspection time is reduced to approximately one-fifth of the time required for manual inspection by experts.

Self-sustained oscillations are ubiquitous in nature and engineering. In this paper, we propose a novel output-only system-identification framework for identifying the system parameters of a self-sustained oscillator affected by Gaussian white noise. A Langevin model that characterizes the self-sustained oscillator is postulated, and the corresponding Fokker--Planck equation is derived from stochastic averaging. From the drift and diffusion terms of the Fokker--Planck equation, unknown parameters of the system are identified. We develop a numerically efficient algorithm for enhancing the accuracy of parameter identification. In particular, a modified Levenberg--Marquardt optimization algorithm tailored to output-only system identification is introduced. The proposed framework is demonstrated on both numerical and experimental oscillators with varying system parameters that develop into self-sustained oscillations. The results show that the computational cost required for performing the system identification is dramatically reduced by using the proposed framework. Also, system parameters that were difficult to be extracted with the existing method could be efficiently computed with the system identification method developed in this study. Pertaining to the robustness and computational efficiency of the presented framework, this study can contribute to an accurate and fast diagnosis of dynamical systems under stochastic forcing.

Also, we study the fractional version of Taylor expansion for the solution $u$, which is called $s$-polynomial. To prove $C_s^{2+α}$-regularity and higher regularity of the solution $u$, we establish generalized Schauder theory which approximates coefficients of the operator with $s$-polynomials rather than constants. The generalized Schauder theory not only recovers the proof for uniformly parabolic equations but is also applicable to other operators that are difficult to apply the bootstrap method to obtain higher regularity.

We investigate several properties of the degenerate Bell distribution. This paper presents a funnel synthesis algorithm for computing controlled invariant sets and feedback control gains around a given nominal trajectory for dynamical systems with locally Lipschitz nonlinearities and bounded disturbances. The resulting funnel synthesis problem involves a differential linear matrix inequality (DLMI) whose solution satisfies a Lyapunov condition that implies invariance and attractivity properties. Due to these properties, the proposed method can balance maximization of initial invariant funnel size, i.e., size of the funnel entry, and minimization of the size of the attractive funnel for attenuating the effect of disturbance. To solve the resulting funnel synthesis problem with the DLMI as constraints, we employ a numerical optimal control approach that uses a multiple shooting method to convert the problem into a finite dimensional semidefinite programming problem. This framework does not require piecewise linear system matrices and funnel parameters, which is typically assumed in recent related work. We illustrate the proposed funnel synthesis method with a numerical example.

Then based on this, we present a perturbation theory of the asymptotic operator under the change of compatible CR almost complex structure $J$ for given contact form $λ$. This perturbation theory has been missing in the literature on the study of pseudoholomorphic curves on symplectization. Through this systematic tensorial approach, we also provide the study of finer asymptotic behavior at the punctures, such as convergence of tangent plane of contact instantons, in terms of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the asymptotic operator, which also simplifies the corresponding study of pseudoholomorphic curves on symplectization in the literature.

In this survey article, we present the analysis of pseudoholomorphic curves $u:(\dot Σ,j) \to (Q \times \mathbb{R}, \widetilde J)$ on the symplectization of contact manifold $(Q,λ)$ as a subcase of the analysis of contact instantons $w:\dot Σ\to Q$, i.e., of the maps $w$ satisfying the equation $$ {\bar{\partial}}^πw = 0, \, d(w^*λ\circ j) = 0 $$ on the contact manifold $(Q,λ)$, which has been carried out by a coordinate-free covariant tensorial calculus. When the analysis is applied to that of pseudoholomorphic curves $u = (w,f)$ with $w = π_Q \circ u$, $f = s\circ u$ on symplectization, the outcome is generally stronger and more accurate than the common results on the regularity presented in the literature in that all of our a priori estimates can be written purely in terms $w$ not involving $f$. The a priori elliptic estimates for $w$ are largely consequences of various Weitzenböck-type formulae with respect to the contact triad connection introduced by Wang and the first author in [OW14], and the estimate for $f$ is a consequence thereof by simple integration of the equation $df = w^*λ\circ j$.
We also derive a simple precise tensorial formulae for the linearized operator and for the asymptotic operator that admit a perturbation theory of the operators with respect to (adapted) almost complex structures: The latter has been missing in the analysis of pseudoholomorphic curves on symplectization in the existing literature.
