Experiments performed previously showed some remarkable properties of the basins of attractions for finding roots of polynomials and meromorphic functions, with BNQN. In general, they look more smooth than that of Newton's method.
In this paper, we continue to experimentally explore in depth this remarkable phenomenon, and connect BNQN to Newton's flow and Voronoi's diagram. This link poses a couple of challenging puzzles to be explained. Experiments also indicate that BNQN is more robust against random perturbations than Newton's method and Random Relaxed Newton's method.

In this paper, we propose a novel approach to solving optimization problems by reformulating the optimization problem into a dynamical system, followed by the adaptive spectral Koopman (ASK) method. The Koopman operator, employed in our approach, approximates the evolution of an ordinary differential equation (ODE) using a finite number of eigenfunctions and eigenvalues. We begin by providing a brief overview of the Koopman operator and the ASK method. Subsequently, we adapt the ASK method for solving a general optimization problem. Moreover, we provide an error bound to aid in understanding the performance of the proposed approach, marking the initial step in a more comprehensive numerical analysis. Experimentally, we demonstrate the applicability and accuracy of our method across a diverse range of optimization problems, including min-max problems. Our approach consistently yields smaller gradient norms and higher success rates in finding critical points compared to state-of-the-art gradient-based methods. We also observe the proposed method works particularly well when the dynamical properties of the system can be effectively modeled by the system's behaviors in a neighborhood of critical points.

A new variant of Newton's method - named Backtracking New Q-Newton's method (BNQN) - which has strong theoretical guarantee, is easy to implement, and has good experimental performance, was recently introduced by the third author.
Experiments performed previously showed some remarkable properties of the basins of attractions for finding roots of polynomials and meromorphic functions using BNQN. In particular, it seems that for finding roots of polynomials of degree 2, the basins of attraction of the dynamics for BNQN are the same as that for Newton's method (the latter is the classical Schröder's result in Complex Dynamics).
In this paper, we show that indeed the picture we obtain when finding roots of polynomials of degree 2 is the same as that in Schöder's result, with a remarkable difference: on the boundary line of the basins, the dynamics of Newton's method is chaotic, while the dynamics of BNQN is more smooth. On the way to proving the result, we show that BNQN (in any dimension) is invariant under conjugation by linear operators of the form $A=cR$, where $R$ is unitary and $c>0$ a constant. This again illustrates the similarity-difference relation between BNQN and Newton's method.

In previous work of the second- and third-named authors with Linhui Shen, cluster theory was used to construct wavefunctions for branes in threespace and conjecturally relate them to open Gromov-Witten invariants. This was done by defining a quantum Lagrangian subvariety of a quantum cluster variety, and mutating a simple solution to the defining equations in a distinguished seed. In this paper, we extend the construction to incorporate the skein-theoretic approach to open Gromov-Witten theory of Ekholm-Shende. In particular, we define a skein-theoretic version of cluster theory, including the groupoid of seeds and mutations and a skein-theoretic version of the quantum dilogarithm. We prove a pentagon relation in the skein of the closed torus in this context, and give strong evidence that its analogue holds for arbitrary surfaces. We propose face relations satisfied by the skein-theoretic wavefunction, prove their invariance under mutations, and show their solution is unique. We define a skein version of framings in the story, and use the novel cluster structure to compute wavefunctions in several examples. The skein approach incorporates moduli spaces of sheaves of higher microlocal rank and their quantizations.

We consider a data-driven newsvendor problem, where one has access to past demand data and the associated feature information. We solve the problem by estimating the target quantile function using a deep neural network (DNN). The remarkable representational power of DNN allows our framework to incorporate or approximate various extant data-driven models. We provide theoretical guarantees in terms of excess risk bounds for the DNN solution characterized by the network structure and sample size in a non-asymptotic manner, which justify the applicability of DNNs in the relevant contexts. Specifically, the convergence rate of the excess risk bound with respect to the sample size increases in the smoothness of the target quantile function but decreases in the dimension of feature variables. This rate can be further accelerated when the target function possesses a composite structure. Compared to other typical models, the nonparametric DNN method can effectively avoid or significantly reduce the model misspecification error. In particular, our theoretical framework can be extended to accommodate the data-dependent scenarios, where the data-generating process is time-dependent but not necessarily identical over time. Finally, we apply the DNN method to a real-world dataset obtained from a food supermarket. Our numerical experiments demonstrate that (1) the DNN method consistently outperforms other alternatives across a wide range of cost parameters, and (2) it also exhibits good performance when the sample size is either very large or relatively limited.

For entire functions $f$, we generally can not have similar results as for rational functions. However, if $f$ has finitely many critical points, then similar results hold.

This paper investigates the column generation (CG) for solving cutting stock problems (CSP). Traditional CG method, which repeatedly solves a restricted master problem (RMP), often suffers from two critical issues in practice -- the loss of solution quality introduced by linear relaxation of both feasible domain and objective and the high time cost of last iterations close to convergence. We empirically find that the first issue is common in ordinary CSPs with linear cutting constraints, while the second issue is especially severe in CSPs with nonlinear cutting constraints that are often generated by approximating chance constraints. We propose an alternative approach, ensembles of multiple column generation processes. In particular, we present two methods -- \mc (multi-column) which return multiple feasible columns in each RMP iteration, and \mt (multi-path) which restarts the RMP iterations from different initialized column sets once the iteration time exceeds a given time limit. The ideas behind are same: leverage the multiple column generation pathes to compensate the loss induced by relaxation, and add earlier sub-optimal columns to accelerate convergence of RMP iterations. Besides, we give theoretical analysis on performance improvement guarantees. Experiments on cutting stock problems demonstrate that compared to traditional CG, our method achieves significant run-time reduction on CSPs with nonlinear constraints, and dramatically improves the ratio of solve-to-optimal on CSPs with linear constraints.

This paper is devoted to proposing a new asymmetric risk-sensitive criterion involving different risk attitudes toward varying risk sources. The criterion can only be defined through the initial value of the minimal solutions of quadratic backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs). Before uncovering the mean-variance representation for the introduced criterion by the variational approach, some axioms are given for the first time to characterize a variance decomposition of square integrable random variables. The stochastic control problems under this criterion are described as a kind of stochastic recursive control problems that includes controlled quadratic BSDEs. An asymmetric risk-sensitive global stochastic maximum principle is derived when the quadratic BSDEs are equipped with bounded data. A closed-form solution of a stochastic linear-quadratic risk-sensitive control problem is obtained by introducing a novel completion-of-squares technique for controlled quadratic BSDEs. In addition, a dynamic portfolio optimization problem featuring a stochastic return rate is provided as an application of the asymmetric risk-sensitive control.

In this paper, we propose an augmented subspace based adaptive proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method for solving the time dependent partial differential equations. By augmenting the POD subspace with some auxiliary modes, we obtain an augmented subspace. We use the difference between the approximation obtained in this augmented subspace and that obtained in the original POD subspace to construct an error indicator, by which we obtain a general framework for augmented subspace based adaptive POD method. We then provide two strategies to obtain some specific augmented subspaces, the random vector based augmented subspace and the coarse-grid approximations based augmented subspace. We apply our new method to two typical 3D advection-diffusion equations with the advection being the Kolmogorov flow and the ABC flow. Numerical results show that our method is more efficient than the existing adaptive POD methods, especially for the advection dominated models.

Cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) is an invaluable technique for determining high-resolution three-dimensional structures of biological macromolecules using transmission particle images. The inherent symmetry in these macromolecules is advantageous, as it allows each image to represent multiple perspectives. However, data processing that incorporates symmetry can inadvertently average out asymmetric features. Therefore, a key preliminary step is to visualize 2D asymmetric features in the particle images, which requires estimating orientation statistics under molecular symmetry constraints. Motivated by this challenge, we introduce a novel method for estimating the mean and variance of orientations with molecular symmetry. Utilizing tools from non-unique games, we show that our proposed non-convex formulation can be simplified as a semi-definite programming problem. Moreover, we propose a novel rounding procedure to determine the representative values. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach can find the global minima and the appropriate representatives with a high degree of probability. We release the code of our method as an open-source Python package named pySymStat. Finally, we apply pySymStat to visualize an asymmetric feature in an icosahedral virus, a feat that proved unachievable using the conventional 2D classification method in RELION.

Specifically, we consider two types of minimization problems: a (single) differentiable function and the sum of a non-smooth function and a differentiable function. In the first case, we adopt a fixed step size to avoid the traditional line search and establish the convergence analysis of the proposed algorithm for a quadratic problem. This acceleration is further incorporated with an operator splitting technique to deal with the non-smooth function in the second case. We use the convex $\ell_1$ and the nonconvex $\ell_1-\ell_2$ functionals as two case studies to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approaches over traditional methods.

Consider the likelihood ratio test (LRT) statistics for the independence of sub-vectors from a $p$-variate normal random vector. We are devoted to deriving the limiting distributions of the LRT statistics based on a random sample of size $n$. It is well known that the limit is chi-square distribution when the dimension of the data or the number of the parameters are fixed. In a recent work by Qi, Wang and Zhang (Ann Inst Stat Math (2019) 71: 911--946), it was shown that the LRT statistics are asymptotically normal under condition that the lengths of the normal random sub-vectors are relatively balanced if the dimension $p$ goes to infinity with the sample size $n$. In this paper, we investigate the limiting distributions of the LRT statistic under general conditions. We find out all types of limiting distributions and obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions for the LRT statistic to converge to a normal distribution when $p$ goes to infinity. We also investigate the limiting distribution of the adjusted LRT test statistic proposed in Qi, Wang and Zhang (2019). Moreover, we present simulation results to compare the performance of classical chi-square approximation, normal and non-normal approximation to the LRT statistics, chi-square approximation to the adjusted test statistic, and some other test statistics.

Abstract:
This article establishes a universal robust limit theorem under a sublinear expectation framework. Under moment and consistency conditions, we show that, for $α\in(1,2)$, the i.i.d. sequence \[ \left \{ \left( \frac{1}{\sqrt{n}}\sum_{i=1}^{n}X_{i},\frac{1}{n}\sum _{i=1}^{n}Y_{i},\frac{1}{\sqrt[α]{n}}\sum_{i=1}^{n}Z_{i}\right) \right \} _{n=1}^{\infty} \] converges in distribution to…

This nonlinear Lévy process is characterized by a fully nonlinear and possibly degenerate partial integro-differential equation (PIDE) \[ \left \{ \begin{array} [c]{l} \displaystyle \partial_{t}u(t,x,y,z)-\sup \limits_{(F_μ,q,Q)\in Θ}\left \{ \int_{\mathbb{R}^{d}}δ_λu(t,x,y,z)F_μ(dλ)\right. \\ \displaystyle \text{\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ }\left. +\langle D_{y}u(t,x,y,z),q\rangle+\frac{1}{2}tr[D_{x}^{2}u(t,x,y,z)Q]\right \} =0,\\ \displaystyle u(0,x,y,z)=φ(x,y,z),\ \ \forall(t,x,y,z)\in \lbrack 0,1]\times \mathbb{R}^{3d}, \end{array} \right. \] with $δ_λu(t,x,y,z):=u(t,x,y,z+λ)-u(t,x,y,z)-\langle D_{z}u(t,x,y,z),λ\rangle$. To construct the limit process $(\tilde{L}_{t})_{t\in \lbrack0,1]}$, we develop a novel weak convergence approach based on the notions of tightness and weak compactness on a sublinear expectation space. We further prove a new type of Lévy-Khintchine representation formula to characterize $(\tilde{L}_{t})_{t\in [0,1]}$. As a byproduct, we also provide a probabilistic approach to prove the existence of the above fully nonlinear degenerate PIDE.

This paper proposes a general framework to estimate coefficients of generalized polynomial chaos (gPC) used in uncertainty quantification via rotational sparse approximation. In particular, we aim to identify a rotation matrix such that the gPC expansion of a set of random variables after the rotation has a sparser representation. However, this rotational approach alters the underlying linear system to be solved, which makes finding the sparse coefficients more difficult than the case without rotation. To solve this problem, we examine several popular nonconvex regularizations in compressive sensing (CS) that perform better than the classic l1 approach empirically. All these regularizations can be minimized by the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Numerical examples show superior performance of the proposed combination of rotation and nonconvex sparse promoting regularizations over the ones without rotation and with rotation but using the convex l1 approach.

We study the problem when a firm sets prices for products based on the transaction data, i.e., which product past customers chose from an assortment and what were the historical prices that they observed. Our approach does not impose a model on the distribution of the customers' valuations and only assumes, instead, that purchase choices satisfy incentive-compatible constraints. The individual valuation of each past customer can then be encoded as a polyhedral set, and our approach maximizes the worst-case revenue assuming that new customers' valuations are drawn from the empirical distribution implied by the collection of such polyhedra. We show that the optimal prices in this setting can be approximated at any arbitrary precision by solving a compact mixed-integer linear program. Moreover, we study the single-product case and relate it to the traditional model-based approach. We also design three approximation strategies that are of low computational complexity and interpretable. Comprehensive numerical studies based on synthetic and real data suggest that our pricing approach is uniquely beneficial when the historical data has a limited size or is susceptible to model misspecification.

This paper proposes a distributed model predicted control (DMPC) approach for consensus control of multi-agent systems (MASs) with linear agent dynamics and bounded control input constraints. Within the proposed DMPC framework, each agent exchanges assumed state trajectories with neighbors and solves a local open-loop optimization problem to obtain the optimal control input. In the optimization problem, a discrete-time consensus protocol is introduced into update law design for assumed terminal states, with which asymptotic consensus of assumed terminal states and recursive feasibility are rigorously proved. Together with the optimal cost function, an infinite series of cost-to-go functions is introduced into the design of a Lyapunov function, with which closed-loop asymptotic consensus is finally proved. Two applications including cooperation of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) are used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed DMPC approach.

Topological representations are rapidly becoming a popular way to capture and encode higher-order interactions in complex systems. They have found applications in disciplines as different as cancer genomics, brain function, and computational social science, in representing both descriptive features of data and inference models. While intense research has focused on the connectivity and homological features of topological representations, surprisingly scarce attention has been given to the investigation of the community structures of simplicial complexes. To this end, we adopt recent advances in symbolic embeddings to compute and visualize the community structures of simplicial complexes. We first investigate the stability properties of embedding obtained for synthetic simplicial complexes to the presence of higher order interactions. We then focus on complexes arising from social and brain functional data and show how higher order interactions can be leveraged to improve clustering detection and assess the effect of higher order interaction on individual nodes. We conclude delineating limitations and directions for extension of this work.

Hu et. al 2018 studied a stochastic optimal control problem for fully coupled forward-backward stochastic control systems with a nonempty control domain. By assuming a weakly coupled condition, they established an approach to obtain the first-order, second-order variational equations and the adjoint equations for the states X, Y and Z and deduced the global maximum principle. But it is well known that there are several different conditions such as monotonicity condition, weakly coupled condition and other conditions which can guarantee the existence and uniqueness of the solution to fully coupled FBSDEs. In this note, to overcome the limitations of assuming a specific condition, we propose two kinds of assumptions which can guarantee that the approach developed in Hu et. al 2018 is still applicable. Under these two kinds of assumptions, we obtain the global stochastic maximum principle.

We consider an intermediary's problem of dynamically matching demand and supply of heterogeneous types in a periodic-review fashion. More specifically, there are two disjoint sets of demand and supply types, and a reward associated with each possible matching of a demand type and a supply type. In each period, demand and supply of various types arrive in random quantities. The platform's problem is to decide on the optimal matching policy to maximize the total discounted rewards minus costs, given that unmatched demand and supply will incur waiting or holding costs, and will be carried over to the next period (with abandonment). For this dynamic matching problem, we provide sufficient conditions on matching rewards such that the optimal matching policy follows a priority hierarchy among possible matching pairs. We show those conditions are satisfied by vertically and unidirectionally horizontally differentiated types, for which quality and distance determine priority, respectively. As a result of the priority property, the optimal matching policy boils down to a match-down-to threshold structure when considering a specific pair of demand and supply types in the priority hierarchy.

In this paper, we study the existence and uniqueness of viscosity solutions to a kind of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations combined with algebra equations. This HJB equation is related to a stochastic optimal control problem for which the state equation is described by a fully coupled forward-backward stochastic differential equation. By extending Peng's backward semigroup approach to this problem, we obtain the dynamic programming principle and show that the value function is a viscosity solution to this HJB equation. As for the proof of the uniqueness of viscosity solution, the analysis method in Barles, Buckdahn and Pardoux <cite>Baeles-BP</cite> usually does not work for this fully coupled case. With the help of the uniqueness of the solution to FBSDEs, we propose a novel probabilistic approach to study the uniqueness of the solution to this HJB equation. We obtain that the value function is the minimum viscosity solution to this HJB equation. Especially, when the coefficients are independent of the control variable or the solution is smooth, the value function is the unique viscosity solution.

Within the framework of viscosity solution, we study the relationship between the maximum principle (MP) in [9] and the dynamic programming principle (DPP) in [10] for a fully coupled forward-backward stochastic controlled system (FBSCS) with a nonconvex control domain. For a fully coupled FBSCS, both the corresponding MP and the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation combine an algebra equation respectively. So this relationship becomes more complicated and almost no work involves this issue. With the help of a new decoupling technique, we obtain the desirable estimates for the fully coupled forward-backward variational equations and establish the relationship. Furthermore, for the smooth case, we discover the connection between the derivatives of the solution to the algebra equation and some terms in the first and second-order adjoint equations. Finally, we study the local case under the monotonicity conditions as in [14,27] and obtain the relationship between the MP in [27] and the DPP in [14].

We study a stochastic optimal control problem for fully coupled forward-backward stochastic control systems with a nonempty control domain. For our problem, the first-order and second-order variational equations are fully coupled linear FBSDEs. Inspired by Hu (Hu, Probability, Uncertainty and Quantitative Risk, 2(1) (2017):pp 1-20), we develop a new decoupling approach by introducing an adjoint equation which is a quadratic BSDE. By revealing the relations among the terms of the first-order Taylor's expansions, we estimate the orders of them and derive a global stochastic maximum principle which includes a completely new term. Applications to stochastic linear quadratic control problems are investigated.

Abstract:
In this paper we study the stochastic differential equations driven by $G$-Brownian motion ($G$-SDEs for short). We extend the notion of conditional $G$-expectation from deterministic time to the more general optional time situation. Then, via this conditional expectation, we develop the strong Markov property for $G$-SDEs. In particular, we obtain the strong Markov property for $G$-Brownian motio…

Some applications including the reflection principle for $G$-Brownian motion are also provided.
