In this paper, we present conditions for identifying the generator of a linear stochastic differential equation (SDE) from the distribution of its solution process with a given fixed initial state. These identifiability conditions are crucial in causal inference using linear SDEs as they enable the identification of the post-intervention distributions from its observational distribution. Specifically, we derive a sufficient and necessary condition for identifying the generator of linear SDEs with additive noise, as well as a sufficient condition for identifying the generator of linear SDEs with multiplicative noise. We show that the conditions derived for both types of SDEs are generic. Moreover, we offer geometric interpretations of the derived identifiability conditions to enhance their understanding. To validate our theoretical results, we perform a series of simulations, which support and substantiate the established findings.

The bulk is isotropic, while the layer is considered to be anisotropic and ``optimally aligned", where the normal direction is always an eigenvector of the diffusion tensor. To see the effect of the layer, we derive effective boundary conditions (EBCs) by the limiting solution of the Fisher-KPP equation as the thickness of the layer shrinks to zero. These EBCs contain some exotic boundary conditions including the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map** and the Fractional Laplacian. Moreover, we emphasize that each EBC keeps effective indefinitely, even as time approaches infinity.

Recent works have paid attentions to a special class of symmetric tensors termed regular simplex tensors, which is constructed by equiangular tight frame of n + 1 vectors in n-dimensional space, and the robustness of eigenpairs was investigated. In the end of the literature, a conjecture was claimed that the robust eigenvectors of a regular simplex tensor are precisely the vectors in the frame. One later work theoretically proved that the case of n = 2 was true. In this paper, we proceed further and complete the proof for the above conjecture. Some promising directions are discussed in the end for future works.

The main features of this problem are twofold: on one hand, the layer is thin compared to the scale of the domain, and on the other hand, the thermal conductivity of the layer is drastically different from that of the bulk; moreover, the bulk is isotropic, but the layer is anisotropic and ``optimally aligned" in the sense that any vector in the layer normal to the interface is an eigenvector of the thermal tensor. We study the effects of the layer by thinking of it as a thickless surface, on which ``effective boundary conditions" (EBCs) are imposed. In the three-dimensional case, we obtain EBCs by investigating the limiting solution of the initial boundary value problem subject to either Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions as the thickness of the layer shrinks to zero. These EBCs contain not only the standard boundary conditions but also some nonlocal ones, including the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map** and the fractional Laplacian. One of the main features of this work is to allow the drastic difference in the thermal conductivity in the normal direction and two tangential directions within the layer.

We present a proximal algorithm that performs a variational recursion on the space of joint probability measures to propagate the stochastic uncertainties in power system dynamics over high dimensional state space. The proposed algorithm takes advantage of the exact nonlinearity structures in the trajectory-level dynamics of the networked power systems, and is nonparametric. Lifting the dynamics to the space of probability measures allows us to design a scalable algorithm that obviates gridding the underlying high dimensional state space which is computationally prohibitive. The proximal recursion implements a generalized infinite dimensional gradient flow, and evolves probability-weighted scattered point clouds. We clarify the theoretical nuances and algorithmic details specific to the power system nonlinearities, and provide illustrative numerical examples.

This paper studies deferrable load scheduling under demand charge that imposes a penalty on the peak consumption over a billing period. Such a terminal cost poses challenges in real-time dispatch when demand forecasts are inaccurate. A block model-predictive control approach is proposed by breaking demand charge into a sequence of stage costs. The problem of charging electric vehicles is used to illustrate the efficacy of the proposed approach. Numerical examples show that the block model-predictive control outperforms benchmark methods in various settings.

The signature transform, defined by the formal tensor series of global iterated path integrals, is a homomorphism between the path space and the tensor algebra that has been studied in geometry, control theory, number theory as well as stochastic analysis. An elegant isometry conjecture states that the length of a bounded variation path $γ$ can be recovered from the asymptotics of its normalised signature: $\text{Length}(γ)=\lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}\big\Vert n!\int_{0<t_{1}<\cdots<t_{n}<T}dγ_{t_{1}}\otimes\cdots\otimes dγ_{t_{n}}\big\Vert^{\frac{1}{n}}$.
This property depends on a key topological non-degeneracy notion known as tree-reducedness (namely, with no tree-like pieces). Existing arguments have relied crucially on $γ$ having a continuous derivative under the unit speed parametrisation. In this article, we prove the above isometry conjecture for planar paths by assuming only local bounds on the angle of $γ'$ (which ensures the absence of tree-like pieces). Our technique is based on lifting the path onto the special linear group ${\rm SL}_{2}(\mathbb{R})$ and analysing the behaviour of the associated angle dynamics at a microscopic level.

The scenario approach is a general data-driven algorithm to chance-constrained optimization. It seeks the optimal solution that is feasible to a carefully chosen number of scenarios. A crucial step in the scenario approach is to compute the cardinality of essential sets, which is the smallest subset of scenarios that determine the optimal solution. This paper addresses the challenge of efficiently identifying essential sets. For convex problems, we demonstrate that the sparsest dual solution of the scenario problem could pinpoint the essential set. For non-convex problems, we show that two simple algorithms return the essential set when the scenario problem is non-degenerate. Finally, we illustrate the theoretical results and computational algorithms on security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC) in power systems. In particular, case studies of chance-constrained SCUC are performed in the IEEE 118-bus system. Numerical results suggest that the scenario approach could be an attractive solution to practical power system applications.

Solutions to linear controlled differential equations can be expressed in terms of iterated path integrals of the driving path. This collection of iterated integrals encodes essentially all information about the driving path. While upper bounds for iterated path integrals are well known, lower bounds are much less understood, and it is known only relatively recently that some type of asymptotics for the $n$-th order iterated integral can be used to recover some intrinsic quantitative properties of the path, such as the length of $C^1$ paths.
In the present paper, we investigate the simplest type of rough paths (the rough path analogue of line segments), and establish uniform upper and lower estimates for the tail asymptotics of iterated integrals in terms of the local variation of the path. Our methodology, which we believe is new for this problem, involves develo** paths into complex semisimple Lie algebras and using the associated representation theory to study spectral properties of Lie polynomials under the Lie algebraic development.

As an application, we study the long time behaviour of the abelianized winding of reflected Brownian motions in M. In particular, we prove a Gaussian type central limit theorem showing that when rescaled appropriately, the fluctuations of the abelianized winding are normally distributed with an explicit covariance matrix.

The signature of a path γis a sequence whose n-th term is the order-n iterated integrals of γ. It arises from solving multidimensional linear differential equations driven by γ. We are interested in relating the path properties of γwith its signature. If γis C^{1}, then an elegant formula of Hambly and Lyons relates the length of γto the tail asymptotics of the signature. We show an analogous formula for the multidimensional Brownian motion, with the quadratic variation playing a similar role to the length. In the proof, we study the hyperbolic development of Brownian motion and also obtain a new subadditive estimate for the asymptotic of signature, which may be of independent interest. As a corollary, we strengthen the existing uniqueness results for the signatures of Brownian motion.

We consider the problem of determining the optimal aggregate power consumption of a population of thermostatically controlled loads. This is motivated by the problem of synthesizing the demand response for a load serving entity (LSE) serving a population of such customers. We show how the LSE can opportunistically design the aggregate reference consumption to minimize its energy procurement cost, given day-ahead price, load and ambient temperature forecasts, while respecting each individual load's comfort range constraints. The resulting synthesis problem is shown to be amenable to optimal control techniques, but computationally difficult otherwise. Numerical simulations elucidate how the LSE can use the optimal aggregate power consumption trajectory thus computed, for the purpose of demand response.

Motivated by the growing importance of demand response in modern power system's operations, we propose an architecture and supporting algorithms for privacy preserving thermal inertial load management as a service provided by the load serving entity (LSE). We focus on an LSE managing a population of its customers' air conditioners, and propose a contractual model where the LSE guarantees quality of service to each customer in terms of kee** their indoor temperature trajectories within respective bands around the desired individual comfort temperatures. We show how the LSE can price the contracts differentiated by the flexibility embodied by the width of the specified bands. We address architectural questions of (i) how the LSE can strategize its energy procurement based on price and ambient temperature forecasts, (ii) how an LSE can close the real time control loop at the aggregate level while providing individual comfort guarantees to loads, without ever measuring the states of an air conditioner for privacy reasons. Control algorithms to enable our proposed architecture are given, and their efficacy is demonstrated on real data.

In the present paper, we are going to show that outside a slim set in the sense of Malliavin (or quasi-surely), the signature path (which consists of iterated path integrals in every degree) of Brownian motion is non-self-intersecting. This property relates closely to a non-degeneracy property for the Brownian rough path arising naturally from the uniqueness of signature problem in rough path theory. As an important consequence we conclude that quasi-surely, the Brownian rough path does not have any tree-like pieces and every sample path of Brownian motion is uniquely determined by its signature up to reparametrization.

However, the proof of this uniqueness result does not contain any information on how to "see" the trajectory of a (tree-reduced) rough path from its signature, and a constructive understanding on the uniqueness result (in particular on the inverse of S) has become an interesting and important question. The aim of the present paper is to reconstruct a rough path from its signature in an explicit and universal way.

We establish a general framework for a class of multidimensional stochastic processes over [0,1] under which with probability one, the signature (the collection of iterated path integrals in the sense of rough paths) is well-defined and determines the sample paths of the process up to reparametrization. In particular, by using the Malliavin calculus we show that our method applies to a class of Gaussian processes including fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H>1/4, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process and the Brownian bridge.

The present paper is devoted to the study of sample paths of G-Brownian motion and stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by G-Brownian motion from the view of rough path theory. As the starting point, we show that quasi-surely, sample paths of G-Brownian motion can be enhanced to the second level in a canonical way so that they become geometric rough paths of roughness 2 < p < 3. This result enables us to introduce the notion of rough differential equations (RDEs) driven by G-Brownian motion in the pathwise sense under the general framework of rough paths. Next we establish the fundamental relation between SDEs and RDEs driven by G-Brownian motion. As an application, we introduce the notion of SDEs on a differentiable manifold driven by GBrownian motion and construct solutions from the RDE point of view by using pathwise localization technique. This is the starting point of introducing G-Brownian motion on a Riemannian manifold, based on the idea of Eells-Elworthy-Malliavin. The last part of this paper is devoted to such construction for a wide and interesting class of G-functions whose invariant group is the orthogonal group. We also develop the Euler-Maruyama approximation for SDEs driven by G-Brownian motion of independent interest.

The problem finally reduces to the solution of a recursive system of symmetric matrix Riccati equations and a system of independent first order linear matrix ODEs. As an example, the two dimensional Lévy's stochastic area process is studied in detail.
