The classical arguments employed when obtaining error estimates of Finite Element (FE) discretisations of elliptic problems lead to more restrictive assumptions on the regularity of the exact solution when applied to non-conforming methods. The classical arguments employed when obtaining error estimates of Finite Element (FE) discretisations of elliptic problems lead to more restrictive assumptions on the regularity of the exact solution when applied to non-conforming methods. The so-called minimal regularity estimates available in the literature relax some of these assumptions, but are not truly of -minimal regularity-, since a data oscillation term appears in the error estimate. Employing an approach based on a smoothing operator, we derive for the first time error estimates for Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) type discretisations of non-linear problems with $(p,δ)$-structure that only assume the natural $W^{1,p}$-regularity of the exact solution, and which do not contain any oscillation terms.

Abstract:
We consider the flow of a fluid whose response characteristics change due the value of the norm of the symmetric part of the velocity gradient, behaving as an Euler fluid below a critical value and as a Navier-Stokes fluid at and above the critical value, the norm being determined by the external stimuli. We consider the flow of a fluid whose response characteristics change due the value of the norm of the symmetric part of the velocity gradient, behaving as an Euler fluid below a critical value and as a Navier-Stokes fluid at and above the critical value, the norm being determined by the external stimuli. We show that such a fluid, while flowing past a bluff body, develops boundary layers which are practically identical to those that one encounters within the context of the classical boundary layer theory propounded by Prandtl. Unlike the classical boundary layer theory that arises as an approximation within the context of the Navier-Stokes theory, here the development of boundary layers is due to a change in the response characteristics of the constitutive relation. We study the flow of such a fluid past an airfoil and compare the same against the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. We find that the results are in excellent agreement with regard to the velocity and vorticity fields for the two cases.

We analyse a numerical scheme for a system arising from a novel description of the standard elastic--perfectly plastic response. The elastic--perfectly plastic response is described via rate-type equations that do not make use of the standard elastic-plastic decomposition, and the model does not require the use of variational inequalities. Furthermore, the model naturally includes the evolution equation for temperature. We present a low order discretisation based on the finite element method. Under certain restrictions on the mesh we subsequently prove the existence of discrete solutions, and we discuss the stability properties of the numerical scheme. The analysis is supplemented with computational examples.

On the stability and convergence of Discontinuous Galerkin schemes for incompressible flow

Abstract:
The property that the velocity $\boldsymbol{u}$ belongs to $L^\infty(0,T;L^2(Ω)^d)$ is an essential requirement in the definition of energy solutions of models for incompressible fluids. It is, therefore, highly desirable that the solutions produced by discretisation methods are uniformly stable in the $L^\infty(0,T;L^2(Ω)^d)$-norm. In this work, we establish that this is indeed the case for Disco…

In this work, we establish that this is indeed the case for Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretisations (in time and space) of non-Newtonian models with $p$-structure, assuming that $p\geq \frac{3d+2}{d+2}$; the time discretisation is equivalent to the RadauIIA Implicit Runge-Kutta method. We also prove (weak) convergence of the numerical scheme to the weak solution of the system; this type of convergence result for schemes based on quadrature seems to be new. As an auxiliary result, we also derive Gagliardo-Nirenberg-type inequalities on DG spaces, which might be of independent interest.

This concept of solution is based on the balance of entropy instead of the balance of energy and has the advantage that it admits a weak-strong uniqueness principle, justifying the proposed formulation. We provide a proof of existence of solutions based on finite element approximations, thus obtaining the first convergence result of a numerical scheme for the full evolutionary system including temperature dependent coefficients and viscous dissipation terms. Then we proceed to prove the weak-strong uniqueness property of the system by means of a relative energy inequality.

The proposed method avoids the use of variational inequalities and is based on a particularly simple regularisation for which the (weak) convergence of the approximate stresses is known to hold. The system is analysed at the function space level and results in mesh-independent behaviour of the nonlinear iterations.

The discretization employed makes use of the divergence-free Scott-Vogelius pair for the velocity and pressure. The preconditioner builds on the work [P. E. Farrell, L. Mitchell, and F. Wechsung, SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 41 (2019), pp. A3073-A3096], where a Reynolds-robust preconditioner for the three-dimensional Newtonian system was introduced. The preconditioner employs a specialized multigrid method for the stress-velocity block that involves a divergence-capturing space decomposition and a custom prolongation operator. The solver exhibits excellent robustness with respect to the parameters arising in the constitutive relation, allowing for the simulation of a wide range of materials.

In the classical theory of fluid mechanics a linear relationship between the shear stress and the symmetric velocity gradient tensor is often assumed. Even when a nonlinear relationship is assumed, it is typically formulated in terms of an explicit relation. Implicit constitutive models provide a theoretical framework that generalises this, allowing for general implicit constitutive relations. Since it is generally not possible to solve explicitly for the shear stress in the constitutive relation, a natural approach is to include the shear stress as a fundamental unknown in the formulation of the problem. In this work we present a mixed formulation with this feature, discuss its solvability and approximation using mixed finite element methods, and explore the convergence of the numerical approximations to a weak solution of the model.
