Weighted analytic regularity for the integral fractional Laplacian in polyhedra
Abstract: On polytopal domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$, we prove weighted analytic regularity of solutions to the Dirichlet problem for the integral fractional Laplacian with analytic right-hand side. Employing the Caffarelli-Silvestre extension allows to localize the problem and to decompose the regularity estimates into results on vertex, edge, face, vertex-edge, vertex-face, edge-face and vertex-edge-face neig… ▽ More

FEM-BEM coupling in Fractional Diffusion
Abstract: We derive and analyze a fully computable discrete scheme for fractional partial differential equations posed on the full space $\mathbb{R}^d$ . Based on a reformulation using the well-known Caffarelli-Silvestre extension, we study a modified variational formulation to obtain well-posedness of the discrete problem. Our scheme is obtained by combining a diagonalization procedure with a reformulation… ▽ More

Fractional Diffusion in the full space: decay and regularity
Abstract: We consider fractional partial differential equations posed on the full space $\R^d$. Using the well-known Caffarelli-Silvestre extension to $\R^d \times \R^+$ as equivalent definition, we derive existence and uniqueness of weak solutions. We show that solutions to a truncated extension problem on $\R^d \times (0,\YY)$ converge to the solution of the original problem as $\YY \rightarrow \infty$. M… ▽ More

Two-level error estimation for the integral fractional Laplacian
Abstract: For the singular integral definition of the fractional Laplacian, we consider an adaptive finite element method steered by two-level error indicators. For this algorithm, we show linear convergence in two and three space dimensions as well as convergence of the algorithm with optimal algebraic rates in 2D, when newest vertex bisection is employed for mesh refinement.

Exponential Convergence of hp FEM for the Integral Fractional Laplacian in Polygons
Abstract: We prove exponential convergence in the energy norm of $hp$ finite element discretizations for the integral fractional diffusion operator of order $2s\in (0,2)$ subject to homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions in bounded polygonal domains $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^2$. Key ingredient in the analysis are the weighted analytic regularity from our previous work and meshes that feature anisotropic geome… ▽ More

Exponential meshes and $\mathcal{H}$-matrices
Abstract: In our previous works, we proved that the inverse of the stiffness matrix of an $h$-version finite element method (FEM) applied to scalar second order elliptic boundary value problems can be approximated at an exponential rate in the block rank by $\mathcal{H}$-matrices. Here, we improve on this result in multiple ways: (1) The class of meshes is significantly enlarged and includes certain exponen… ▽ More

$\mathcal{H}$-matrix approximability of inverses of FEM matrices for the time-harmonic Maxwell equations
Abstract: The inverse of the stiffness matrix of the time-harmonic Maxwell equation with perfectly conducting boundary conditions is approximated in the blockwise low-rank format of ${\mathcal H}$-matrices. We prove that root exponential convergence in the block rank can be achieved if the block structure conforms to a standard admissibility criterion.

Caccioppoli-type estimates and $\mathcal{H}$-Matrix approximations to inverses for FEM-BEM couplings
Abstract: We consider three different methods for the coupling of the finite element method and the boundary element method, the Bielak-MacCamy coupling, the symmetric coupling, and the Johnson-Nédélec coupling. For each coupling we provide discrete interior regularity estimates. Local convergence of the FEM for the integral fractional Laplacian
Abstract: We provide for first order discretizations of the integral fractional Laplacian sharp local error estimates on proper subdomains in both the local $H^1$-norm and the localized energy norm. Our estimates have the form of a local best approximation error plus a global error measured in a weaker norm.

On the stability of Scott-Zhang type operators and application to multilevel preconditioning in fractional diffusion
Abstract: We provide an endpoint stability result for Scott-Zhang type operators in Besov spaces. For globally continuous piecewise polynomials these are bounded from $H^{3/2}$ into $B^{3/2}_{2,\infty}$; for elementwise polynomials these are bounded from $H^{1/2}$ into $B^{1/2}_{2,\infty}$. Abstract: The hp-version of the finite element method is applied to singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion type equations on polygonal domains. The solution exhibits boundary layers as well as corner layers. On a class of meshes that are suitable refined near the boundary and the corners, robust exponential convergence (in the polynomial degree) is shown in both a balanced norm and the maximum norm.
