This paper initiates a classification programme of flows of $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-structures on $4$-manifolds which have short-time existence and uniqueness. Our approach adapts a representation-theoretic method originally due to Bryant in the context of $\mathrm{G}_2$ geometry. We show how this strategy can also be used to deduce the number of geometric flows of a given $H$-structure; we illustrate this in the $\mathrm{G}_2$, $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$ and $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ cases. Our investigation also leads us to derive explicit expressions for the Ricci and self-dual Weyl curvature in terms of the intrinsic torsion of the underlying $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-structure. We compute the first variation formulae of all the quadratic functionals in the torsion; these provide natural building blocks for $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ gradient flows. In particular, our results demonstrate that both the negative gradient flow of the Dirichlet energy of the intrinsic torsion and the Ricci harmonic flow are parabolic after a modified DeTurck's trick.

We introduce the coupled instanton equations for a metric, a spinor, a three-form, and a connection on a bundle, over a spin manifold. Special solutions in dimensions $6$ and $7$ arise, respectively, from the Hull--Strominger and the heterotic $\operatorname{G}_2$ system. The equations are motivated by recent developments in theoretical physics and can be recast using generalized geometry; we investigate how coupled instantons relate to generalized Ricci-flat metrics and also to Killing spinors on a Courant algebroid. We present two open questions regarding how these different geometric conditions are intertwined, for which a positive answer is expected from recent developments in the physics literature by De la Ossa, Larfors and Svanes, and in the mathematics literature on Calabi--Yau manifolds, in recent work by the second-named author with González Molina. We give a complete solution to the first of these problems, providing a new method for the construction of instantons in arbitrary dimensions. For $\operatorname{G}_2$-structures with torsion coupled to $\operatorname{G}_2$-instantons, in dimension $7$, we also establish results around the second problem. The last part of the present work carefully studies the approximate solutions to the heterotic $\operatorname{G}_2$-system constructed by the third and fourth authors on contact Calabi--Yau $7$-manifolds, for which we prove the existence of approximate coupled $\operatorname{G}_2$-instantons and generalized Ricci-flat metrics.

This work seeks to advance the understanding of the smooth structure of the moduli space of self-dual contact instantons (SDCI) on Sasakian 7-manifolds M. A neighborhood of a smooth point of M is locally modeled on the first cohomological group of an elliptic complex (1.4). There is a cohomological obstruction to the smoothness for the moduli space, in terms of a second basic cohomological group, in this paper we study conditions under which this obstruction disappears, by computing a Weitzenböck formula and using a Bochner-type method to obtain a vanishing theorem. Given an SDCI on a Sasakian bundle E, we find sufficient conditions for the vanishing of the obstruction in the positivity of a couple of operators R and F depending on the curvatures of the connection and the Riemann curvature of the Sasakian metric g. In particular, we find that if M is transversely Ricci positive and F positive, the moduli space of SDCI must be smooth. However, in general, the operator F is not positive definite and we describe bundles over the Stiefel manifold for which it is the case. Finally, we show that when the energy of the curvature is less than the first non-zero eigenvalue of RicT the obstruction vanishes.

Specifically, we compute datasets for certain Sasakian Hodge numbers and for the Crowley-Nördstrom invariant of the natural $G_2$-structure of the $7$-dimensional link of a weighted projective Calabi-Yau $3$-fold hypersurface singularity, for 7549 of the 7555 possible $\mathbb{P}^4(\textbf{w})$ projective spaces. These topological quantities are then machine learnt with high performance scores, where learning the Sasakian Hodge numbers from the $\mathbb{P}^4(\textbf{w})$ weights alone, using both neural networks and a symbolic regressor which achieve $R^2$ scores of 0.969 and 0.993 respectively. Additionally, properties of the respective Gröbner bases are well-learnt, leading to a vast improvement in computation speeds which may be of independent interest. The data generation and analysis further induced novel conjectures to be raised.

We formulate the gradient Dirichlet flow of $Sp(2)Sp(1)$-structures on $8$-manifolds, as the first systematic study of a geometric quaternion-Kähler (QK) flow. Its critical condition of \emph{harmonicity} is especially relevant in the QK setting, since torsion-free structures are often topologically obstructed. We show that the conformally parallel property implies harmonicity, extending a result of Grigorian in the $G_2$ case. We also draw several comparisons with $Spin(7)$-structures. Analysing the QK harmonic flow, we prove an almost-monotonicity formula, which implies to long-time existence under small initial energy, via $ε$-regularity. We set up a theory of harmonic QK solitons, constructing a non-trivial steady example. We produce explicit long-time solutions: one, converging to a torsion-free limit on the hyperbolic plane; and another, converging to a limit which is harmonic but not torsion-free, on the manifold $SU(3)$. We also study compactness and the formation of singularities.

We develop an abstract theory of flows of geometric $H$-structures, i.e., flows of tensor fields defining $H$-reductions of the frame bundle, for a closed and connected subgroup $H \subset \mathrm{SO}(n)$, on any connected and oriented $n$-manifold with sufficient topology to admit such structures.
The first part of the article sets up a unifying theoretical framework for deformations of $H$-structures, by way of the natural infinitesimal action of $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ on tensors combined with various bundle decompositions induced by $H$-structures. We compute evolution equations for the intrinsic torsion under general flows of $H$-structures and, as applications, we obtain general Bianchi-type identities for $H$-structures, and, for closed manifolds, a general first variation formula for the $L^2$-Dirichlet energy functional $\mathcal{E}$ on the space of $H$-structures.
We then specialise the theory to the negative gradient flow of $\mathcal{E}$ over isometric $H$-structures, i.e., their harmonic flow. The core result is an almost monotonocity formula along the flow for a scale-invariant localised energy, similar to the classical formulae by Chen-Struwe for the harmonic map heat flow. This yields an $ε$-regularity theorem and an energy gap result for harmonic structures, as well as long-time existence for the flow under small initial energy, with respect to the $L^\infty$-norm of initial torsion, in the spirit of Chen-Ding. Moreover, below a certain energy level, the absence of a torsion-free isometric $H$-structure in the initial homotopy class imposes the formation of finite-time singularities. These seemingly contrasting statements are illustrated by examples on flat $n$-tori, so long as $[\mathbb{S}^n,SO(n)/H]$ contains more than one element, and the universal cover of $SO(n)/H$ is a sphere; e.g. when $n=7$ and $H=\rm G_2$, or $n=8$ and $H=\rm Spin(7)$.

We show that the natural initial condition leads to an ancient solution of the Laplacian flow with a finite time Type I singularity which is not a soliton, whereas it produces an immortal (though not eternal and not self-similar) solution of the Laplacian coflow which has an infinite time singularity, that is Type IIb unless the transverse Calabi--Yau geometry is flat. The flows in each case collapse (after normalising the volume) to a lower-dimensional limit, which is either $\mathbb{R}$ for the Laplacian flow or standard $\mathbb{C}^3$ for the Laplacian coflow. We also study the Hitchin flow in this setting, which we show coincides with the Laplacian coflow up to reparametrisation of time, and defines an (incomplete) Calabi--Yau structure on the spacetime track of the flow.

Starting from a general perspective, we establish Shi-type estimates and a correspondence between harmonic solitons and self-similar solutions for arbitrary isometric flows of $H$-structures. Moreover, we prove Cheeger--Gromov and Hamilton-type compactness theorems for the solutions of the harmonic flow, and we characterise Type-$\mathrm{I}$ singularities as being modelled on shrinking solitons. We also establish a Bryant-type description of isometric $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-structures, based on squares of spinors, which may be of independent interest.

We describe the $10$-dimensional space of $Sp(2)$-invariant $G_2$-structures on the homogeneous $7$-sphere $S^7=Sp(2)/Sp(1)$ as $\mathbb{R}^+\times Gl^+(3,\mathbb{R})$. In those terms, we formulate a general Ansatz for $G_2$-structures, which realises representatives in each of the $7$ possible isometric classes of homogeneous $G_2$-structures. Moreover, the well-known nearly parallel round and squashed metrics occur naturally as opposite poles in an $S^3$-family, the equator of which is a new $S^2$-family of coclosed $G_2$-structures satisfying the harmonicity condition $div T=0$. We show general existence of harmonic representatives of $G_2$-structures in each isometric class through explicit solutions of the associated flow and describe the qualitative behaviour of the flow. We study the stability of the Dirichlet gradient flow near these critical points, showing explicit examples of degenerate and nondegenerate local maxima and minima, at various regimes of the general Ansatz. Finally, for metrics outside of the Ansatz, we identify families of harmonic $G_2$-structures, prove long-time existence of the flow and study the stability properties of some well-chosen examples.

We give a twistorial interpretation of geometric structures on a Riemannian manifold, as sections of homogeneous fibre bundles, following an original insight by Wood (2003). The natural Dirichlet energy induces an abstract harmonicity condition, which gives rise to a geometric gradient flow. We establish a number of analytic properties for this flow, such as uniqueness, smoothness, short-time existence, and some sufficient conditions for long-time existence. This description potentially subsumes a large class of geometric PDE problems from different contexts.
As applications, we recover and unify a number of results in the literature: for the isometric flow of ${\rm G}_2$-structures, by Grigorian (2017, 2019), Bagaglini (2019), and Dwivedi-Gianniotis-Karigiannis (2019); and for harmonic almost complex structures, by He (2019) and He-Li (2019). Our theory also establishes original properties regarding harmonic flows of parallelisms and almost contact structures.

Such bundles are known to parametrise solutions of the Yang-Mills equation over the $\rm G_2-$manifolds obtained from asymptotically cylindrical Calabi-Yau $3-$folds studied by Kovalev and by Corti-Haskins-Nordström-Pacini et al.
The most important tool is a generalisation of Hoppe's stability criterion to holomorphic bundles over smooth projective varieties $X$ with $\operatorname{Pic}{X}\simeq\mathbb{Z}^l$, a result which may be of independent interest.
Finally, we apply monads to produce a prototypical model of the curvature blow-up phenomenon along a sequence of asymptotically stable bundles degenerating into a torsion-free sheaf.

This is the first nontrivial construction to date of instantons over a compact manifold with holonomy exactly $G_2$. The HYM connections on asymptotically stable bundles over Kovalev's noncompact Calabi-Yau 3-folds, obtained in the first article, are glued compatibly with a twisted connected sum, to produce a $G_2-$instanton over the resulting compact 7-manifold. This is accomplished under a nondegeneracy acyclic assumption on the bundle `at infinity', which occurs e.g. over certain projective varieties $X_{22}$ in $\mathbb{C}P^{13}$ equipped with an asymptotically rigid bundle.

Abstract:
A concrete model for a 7-dimensional gauge theory under special holonomy is proposed, within the paradigm outlined by Donaldson and Thomas, over the asymptotically cylindrical G2-manifolds provided by Kovalev's noncompact version of the Calabi conjecture. One obtains a solution to the $G_2$-instanton equation from the associated Hermitian Yang-Mills problem, to which the methods of Simpson et al.…

A concrete model for a 7-dimensional gauge theory under special holonomy is proposed, within the paradigm outlined by Donaldson and Thomas, over the asymptotically cylindrical G2-manifolds provided by Kovalev's noncompact version of the Calabi conjecture. One obtains a solution to the $G_2$-instanton equation from the associated Hermitian Yang-Mills problem, to which the methods of Simpson et al. are applied, subject to a crucial asymptotic stability assumption over the "boundary at infinity".
