In our contribution we study stochastic models in one space dimension with two conservation laws. One model is the coupled continuum stochastic Burgers equation, for which each current is a sum of quadratic non-linearities, linear diffusion, and spacetime white noise. The second model is a two-lane stochastic lattice gas. As distinct from previous studies, the two conserved densities are tuned such that the flux Jacobian, a $2 \times 2$ matrix, has coinciding eigenvalues. In the steady state, investigated are spacetime correlations of the conserved fields and the time-integrated currents at the origin. For a particular choice of couplings the dynamical exponent 3/2 is confirmed. Furthermore, at these couplings, continuum stochastic Burgers equation and lattice gas are demonstrated to be in the same universality class.

Model predictive control (MPC) for uncertain systems in the presence of hard constraints on state and input is a non-trivial problem, and the challenge is increased manyfold in the absence of state measurements. In this paper, we propose an adaptive output feedback MPC technique, based on a novel combination of an adaptive observer and robust MPC, for single-input single-output discrete-time linear time-invariant systems. At each time instant, the adaptive observer provides estimates of the states and the system parameters that are then leveraged in the MPC optimization routine while robustly accounting for the estimation errors. The solution to the optimization problem results in a homothetic tube where the state estimate trajectory lies. The true state evolves inside a larger outer tube obtained by augmenting a set, invariant to the state estimation error, around the homothetic tube sections. The proof for recursive feasibility for the proposed `homothetic and invariant' two-tube approach is provided, along with simulation results on an academic system.

By considering the special cases $p_{k,k}(n)$ and $p_{2k,k}(n)$, they unearthed connections to the rank and crank of partitions and some restricted partitions. In this paper, we build on their work and obtain more general results associating the extended mex function with the number of partitions of an integer with arbitrary bound on the rank and crank. We also derive a new result expressing the smallest parts function of Andrews as a finite sum of the extended mex function in consideration with a curious coefficient. We also obtain a few restricted partition identities with some reminiscent of shifted partition identities. Finally, we define and explore a new minimal excludant for overpartitions.

We consider a harmonic chain of $N$ oscillators in presence of a disordered magnetic field. The ends of the chain are connected to heat baths and we study the effects of the magnetic field randomness on the heat transport. The disorder, in general, causes localization of the normal modes due to which a system becomes insulating. However, for this system, the localization length diverges as the normal mode frequency approaches zero. Therefore, the low frequency modes contribute to the transmission, $\mathcal{T}_N(ω)$, and the heat current goes down as a power law with the system size, $N$. This power law is determined by the small frequency behaviour of some Lyapunov exponent, $λ(ω)$, and the transmission in the thermodynamic limit, $\mathcal{T}_\infty(ω)$. While it is known that in the presence of a constant magnetic field $\mathcal{T}_\infty(ω)\sim ω^{3/2},~ ω^{1/2}$ depending on the boundary conditions, we find that the Lyapunov exponent for the system behaves as $λ(ω)\simω$ for $\expval{B}\neq 0$ and $λ(ω)\simω^{2/3}$ for $\expval{B}=0$. Therefore, we obtain different power laws for current vs $N$ depending on $\expval{B}$ and the boundary conditions.

We consider heat transport across a harmonic chain of charged particles, with transverse degrees of freedom, in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. For an open chain connected to heat baths at the two ends we obtain the nonequilibrium Green's function expression for the heat current. This expression involves two different Green's functions which can be identified as corresponding respectively to scattering processes within or between the two transverse waves. The presence of the magnetic field leads to two phonon bands of the isolated system and we show that the net transmission can be written as a sum of two distinct terms attributable to the two bands. Exact expressions are obtained for the current in the thermodynamic limit, for the the cases of free and fixed boundary conditions. In this limit, we find that at small frequency $ω$, the effective transmission has the frequency-dependence $ω^{3/2}$ and $ω^{1/2}$ for fixed and free boundary conditions respectively. This is in contrast to the zero magnetic field case where the transmission has the dependence $ω^2$ and $ω^0$ for the two boundary conditions respectively, and can be understood as arising from the quadratic low frequency phonon dispersion.

In this article, we discuss how Archimedes came up with his formula. Archimedes in fact proved that 223/71 < $π$ < 22/7. Here we provide an improved lower bound.

The particles are confined by a harmonic trap and repelling each other via pairwise interaction potential that behaves as a power law $\propto \sum_{\substack{i\neq j}}^N|x_i-x_j|^{-k}$ (with $k>-2$) of their mutual distance. This is a generalization of the well known cases of the one component plasma ($k=-1$), Dyson's log-gas ($k\to 0^+$), and the Calogero-Moser model ($k=2$). Due to the competition between harmonic confinement and pairwise repulsion, the particles spread over a finite region of space for all $k>-2$. We compute exactly the average density profile for large $N$ for all $k>-2$ and show that while it is independent of temperature for sufficiently low temperature, it has a rich and nontrivial dependence on $k$ with distinct behavior for $-2<k<1$, $k>1$ and $k=1$.

We consider a one-dimensional gas of $N$ charged particles confined by an external harmonic potential and interacting via the one-dimensional Coulomb potential. For this system we show that in equilibrium the charges settle, on an average, uniformly and symmetrically on a finite region centred around the origin. We study the statistics of the position of the rightmost particle $x_{\max}$ and show that the limiting distribution describing its typical fluctuations is different from the Tracy-Widom distribution found in the one-dimensional log-gas. We also compute the large deviation functions which characterise the atypical fluctuations of $x_{\max}$ far away from its mean value. In addition, we study the gap between the two rightmost particles as well as the index $N_+$, i.e., the number of particles on the positive semi-axis. We compute the limiting distributions associated to the typical fluctuations of these observables as well as the corresponding large deviation functions. We provide numerical supports to our analytical predictions. Part of these results were announced in a recent Letter, Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 060601 (2017).

We compute analytically the probability distribution of the position $x_{\max}$ of the rightmost charge in the limit of large $N$. This distribution is different from the Tracy-Widom distribution of $x_{\max}$ for the Dyson's log-gas. We also compute the large deviation functions of $x_{\max}$ explicitly and show that the system exhibits a third-order phase transition, as in the log-gas. We present the exact solution for a set of nonlinear algebraic equations $\frac{1}{z_l}= πd + \frac{2 d}{n} \sum_{m \neq l} \frac{1}{z_l-z_m}$. These were encountered by us in a recent study of the low energy spectrum of the Heisenberg ferromagnetic chain \cite{dhar}. These equations are low $d$ (density) ``degenerations'' of more complicated transcendental equation of Bethe's Ansatz for a ferromagnet, but are interesting in themselves. They generalize, through a single parameter, the equations of Stieltjes,
$x_l = \sum_{m \neq l} 1/(x_l-x_m)$, familiar from Random Matrix theory.
It is shown that the solutions of these set of equations is given by the zeros of generalized associated Laguerre polynomials. These zeros are interesting, since they provide one of the few known cases where the location is along a nontrivial curve in the complex plane that is determined in this work.
Using a ``Green's function'' and a saddle point technique we determine the asymptotic distribution of zeros.
