We investigate a model for the accretive growth of an elastic solid. The reference configuration of the body is accreted in its normal direction, with space- and deformation-dependent accretion rate. The time-dependent reference configuration is identified via the level sets of the unique viscosity solution of a suitable generalized eikonal equation. After proving the global-in-time well-posedness of the quasistatic equilibrium under prescribed growth, we prove the existence of a local-in-time solution for the coupled equilibrium-growth problem, where both mechanical displacement and time-evolving set are unknown. A distinctive challenge is the limited regularity of the growing body, which calls for proving a new uniform Korn inequality.

We introduce a fractional variant of the Cahn-Hilliard equation settled in a bounded domain and with a possibly singular potential. We first focus on the case of homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions, and show how to prove the existence and uniqueness of a weak solution. The proof relies on the variational method known as \textit{minimizing-movements scheme}, which fits naturally with the gradient-flow structure of the equation. The interest of the proposed method lies in its extreme generality and flexibility. In particular, relying on the variational structure of the equation, we prove the existence of a solution for a general class of integrodifferential operators, not necessarily linear or symmetric, which include fractional versions of the $q$-Laplacian. In the second part of the paper, we adapt the argument in order to prove the existence of solutions in the case of regional fractional operators. As a byproduct, this yields an existence result in the interesting cases of homogeneous fractional Neumann boundary conditions or periodic boundary conditions.

The analysis accounts for both symmetric and antisymmetric exchange. Our result is twofold. First, we extend the Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu formula to encompass the scenario where antisymmetric contributions are encoded into the energy. Second, we prove that, under physically relevant assumptions on the families of exchange kernels, the family of nonlocal functionals Gamma-converges to their local counterparts. As a byproduct of our analysis, we obtain a rigorous justification of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in chiral magnets under the form commonly adopted in the variational theory of micromagnetism when modeling antisymmetric exchange interactions.

First, we prove that solutions to the nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard system converge, as the nonlocality parameter tends to zero, to solutions to its local counterpart. Second, we provide first-order optimality conditions for an optimal control problem on the local model, accounting also for chemotaxis, and both for regular or singular potentials, without any additional regularity assumptions on the solution operator. The proof is based on an approximation of the local control problem by means of suitable nonlocal ones, and on proving nonlocal-to-local convergence both for the corresponding dual systems and for the associated first-order optimality conditions.

We perform a dimension reduction analysis for a coupled rate-dependent/rate-independent adhesive-contact model in the setting of visco-elastodynamic plates. We work with a weak solvability notion inspired by the theory of (purely) rate-independent processes, and accordingly term the related solutions `Semistable Energetic'. For Semistable Energetic solutions, the momentum balance holds in a variational sense, whereas the flow rule for the adhesion parameter is replaced by a semi-stability condition coupled with an energy-dissipation inequality. Prior to addressing the dimension reduction analysis, we show that Semistable Energetic solutions to the three-dimensional damped adhesive contact model converge, as the viscosity term tends to zero, to three-dimensional Semistable Energetic solutions for the undamped corresponding system. We then perform a dimension reduction analysis, both in the case of a vanishing viscosity tensor (leading, in the limit, to an undamped model), and in the complementary setting in which the dam** is assumed to go to infinity as the thickness of the plate tends to zero. In both regimes, the presence of adhesive contact yields a nontrivial coupling of the in-plane and out-of-plane contributions. In the undamped scenario we obtain in the limit an energy-dissipation inequality and a semistability condition. In the damped case, instead, we achieve convergence to an enhanced notion of solution, fulfilling an energy-dissipation balance.

We perform a stochastic-homogenization analysis for composite materials exhibiting a random microstructure. Under the assumptions of stationarity and ergodicity, we characterize the Gamma-limit of a micromagnetic energy functional defined on magnetizations taking value in the unit sphere, and including both symmetric and antisymmetric exchange contributions. This Gamma-limit corresponds to a micromagnetic energy functional with homogeneous coefficients. We provide explicit formulas for the effective magnetic properties of the composite material in terms of homogenization correctors. Additionally, the variational analysis of the two exchange energy terms is performed in the more general setting of functionals defined on manifold-valued maps with Sobolev regularity, in the case in which the target manifold is a bounded, orientable smooth surface with tubular neighborhood of uniform thickness. Eventually, we present an explicit characterization of minimizers of the effective exchange in the case of magnetic multilayers, providing quantitative evidence of Dzyaloshinskii's predictions on the emergence of helical structures in composite ferromagnetic materials with stochastic microstructure.

Due to their ability to handle discontinuous images while having a well-understood behavior, regularizations with total variation (TV) and total generalized variation (TGV) are some of the best-known methods in image denoising. However, like other variational models including a fidelity term, they crucially depend on the choice of their tuning parameters. A remedy is to choose these automatically through multilevel approaches, for example by optimizing performance on noisy/clean image pairs. In this work, we consider such methods with space-dependent parameters which are piecewise constant on dyadic grids, with the grid itself being part of the minimization. We prove existence of minimizers for fixed discontinuous parameters under mild assumptions on the data, which lead to existence of finite optimal partitions. We further establish that these assumptions are equivalent to the commonly used box constraints on the parameters. On the numerical side, we consider a simple subdivision scheme for optimal partitions built on top of any other bilevel optimization method for scalar parameters, and demonstrate its improved performance on some representative test images when compared with constant optimized parameters.

\leqslant C \int_Ω|\nabla f(x)|^{p(x)}{\mathrm{d} x},
\end{equation*} are known to be \emph{false}. As a result, all available modular versions of the Poincaré- Wirtinger inequality in the variable-exponent setting always contain extra terms that do not disappear in the constant exponent case, preventing such inequalities from reducing to the classical ones in the constant exponent setting. Our contribution is threefold. First, we establish that a modular Poincaré--Wirtinger inequality particularizing to the classical one in the constant exponent case is indeed conceivable. We show that if $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is a bounded Lipschitz domain, and if $p\in L^\infty(Ω)$, $p \geq 1$, then for every $f\in C^\infty(\barΩ)$ the following generalized Poincaré--Wirtinger inequality holds
\begin{equation*}
\int_Ω\left|f(x)-\langle f\rangle_Ω\right|^{p(x)} \ {\mathrm{d} x}
\leq C \int_Ω\int_Ω\frac{|\nabla f(z)|^{p(x)}}{|z-x|^{n-1}}\ {\mathrm{d} z}{\mathrm{d} x},
\end{equation*}
where $\langle f\rangle_Ω$ denotes the mean of $f$ over $Ω$, and $C>0$ is a positive constant depending only on $Ω$ and $\|p\|_{L^\infty(Ω)}$. Second, our argument is concise and constructive and does not rely on compactness results. Third, we additionally provide geometric information on the best Poincaré--Wirtinger constant on Lipschitz domains.

Specifically, we consider a composite obtained by filling the voids of a periodically perforated stiff matrix by soft inclusions. We study the $Γ$-convergence of the related energy functionals as the periodicity tends to zero. The main challenge is posed by the lack of coercivity brought about by the degeneracy of the material properties in the soft part. We prove that the $Γ$-limit, which we compute with respect to a suitable notion of convergence, is the sum of the contributions resulting from each of the two components separately. Eventually, convergence of the energy minimizing configurations is obtained.

We introduce a unified framework based on bi-level optimization schemes to deal with parameter learning in the context of image processing. The goal is to identify the optimal regularizer within a family depending on a parameter in a general topological space. Our focus lies on the situation with non-compact parameter domains, which is, for example, relevant when the commonly used box constraints are disposed of. To overcome this lack of compactness, we propose a natural extension of the upper-level functional to the closure of the parameter domain via Gamma-convergence, which captures possible structural changes in the reconstruction model at the edge of the domain. Under two main assumptions, namely, Mosco-convergence of the regularizers and uniqueness of minimizers of the lower-level problem, we prove that the extension coincides with the relaxation, thus admitting minimizers that relate to the parameter optimization problem of interest. We apply our abstract framework to investigate a quartet of practically relevant models in image denoising, all featuring nonlocality. The associated families of regularizers exhibit qualitatively different parameter dependence, describing a weight factor, an amount of nonlocality, an integrability exponent, and a fractional order, respectively. After the asymptotic analysis that determines the relaxation in each of the four settings, we finally establish theoretical conditions on the data that guarantee structural stability of the models and give examples of when stability is lost.

In particular, sequences of deformations satisfying a Ciarlet-Nečas condition in SBV^2 and for which a convergence of the energies is ensured, are shown to admit asymptotic representations in GSBD^2 satisfying a suitable contact condition. With an explicit counterexample, we prove that this result fails if convergence of the energies does not hold. We further prove that each limiting displacement satisfying the contact condition can be approximated by an energy-convergent sequence of deformations fulfilling a Ciarlet-Nečas condition. The proof relies on a piecewise Korn-Poincaré inequality in GSBD2, on a careful blow-up analysis around jump points, as well as on a refined GSBD^2-density result guaranteeing enhanced contact conditions for the approximants.

By introducing a regularization in the model, we prove that solutions can be obtained as limits of time-discrete solutions, built by means of an exponential-update scheme. By further allowing the dependence of growth dynamics on an additional scalar field, to be interpreted as a nutrient or inhibitor, we formulate an optimal control problem and prove existence of optimal controls and states. The starting point for this work is a static macroscopic model for a high-contrast layered material in single-slip finite crystal plasticity, identified in [Christowiak & Kreisbeck, Calc. Var. PDE (2017)] as a homogenization limit via Γ-convergence. First, we analyze the minimizers of this limit model, addressing the question of uniqueness and deriving necessary conditions. In particular, it turns out that at least one of the defining quantities of an energetically optimal deformation, namely the rotation and the shear variable, is uniquely determined, and we identify conditions that give rise to a trivial material response in the sense of rigid-body motions. The second part is concerned with extending the static homogenization to an evolutionary Γ- convergence-type result for rate-independent systems in specific scenarios, that is, under certain assumptions on the slip systems and suitable regularizations of the energies, where energetic and dissipative effects decouple in the limit. Interestingly, when the slip direction is aligned with the layered microstructure, the limiting system is purely energetic, which can be interpreted as a loss of dissipation through homogenization.

We derive, by means of variational techniques, a limiting description for a class of integral functionals under linear differential constraints. The functionals are designed to encode the energy of a high-contrast composite, that is, a heterogeneous material which, at a microscopic level, consists of a periodically perforated matrix whose cavities are occupied by a filling with very different physical properties. Our main result provides a $Γ$-convergence analysis as the periodicity tends to zero, and shows that the variational limit of the functionals at stake is the sum of two contributions, one resulting from the energy stored in the matrix and the other from the energy stored in the inclusions. As a consequence of the underlying high-contrast structure, the study is faced with a lack of coercivity with respect to the standard topologies in $L^p$, which we tackle by means of two-scale convergence techniques. In order to handle the differential constraints, instead, we establish new results about the existence of potentials and of constraint-preserving extension operators for linear, $k$-th order, homogeneous differential operators with constant coefficients and constant rank.

Maxwellian-type rheological models of inelastic effects of creep type at large strains are revisited in relation to inelastic-strain gradient theories. In particular, we observe that a dependence of the stored-energy density on inelastic-strain gradients may lead to spurious hardening effects, preventing the model from accommodating large inelastic slips. The main result of this paper is an alternative inelastic model of creep type, where higher-order energy-contribution is provided by the gradients of the elastic strain and of the plastic strain rate, thus preventing the onset of spurious hardening under large slips. The combination of Kelvin-Voigt dam** and Maxwellian creep results in a Jeffreys-type rheological model. Existence of weak solutions is proved via a Faedo-Galerkin approximation.

In this paper, we study the thin-film limit of the micromagnetic energy functional in the presence of bulk Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Our analysis includes both a stationary $Γ$-convergence result for the micromagnetic energy, as well as the identification of the asymptotic behavior of the associated Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. In particular, we prove that, in the limiting model, part of the DMI term behaves like the projection of the magnetic moment onto the normal to the film, contributing this way to an increase in the shape anisotropy arising from the magnetostatic self-energy. Finally, we discuss a convergent finite element approach for the approximation of the time-dependent case and use it to numerically compare the original three-dimensional model with the two-dimensional thin-film limit.

In this paper we consider nonlinearly elastic, frame-indifferent, and singularly perturbed two-well models for materials undergoing solid-solid phase transitions in any space dimensions, and we perform a simultaneous passage to sharp-interface and small-strain limits. Sequences of deformations with equibounded energies are decomposed via suitable Caccioppoli partitions into the sum of piecewise constant rigid movements and suitably rescaled displacements. These converge to limiting partitions, deformations, and displacements, respectively. Whereas limiting deformations are simple laminates whose gradients only attain two values, the limiting displacements belong to the class of special functions with bounded variation (SBV). The latter feature elastic contributions measuring the distance to simple laminates, as well as jumps associated to two consecutive phase transitions having vanishing distance, and thus not being detected by the limiting deformations. By Gamma-convergence we identify an effective limiting model given by the sum of a quadratic linearized elastic energy in terms of displacements along with two surface terms. The first one is proportional to the total length of interfaces created by jumps in the gradient of the limiting deformation. The second one is proportional to twice the total length of interfaces created by jumps in the limiting displacement, as well as by the boundaries of limiting partitions. A main tool of our analysis is a novel two-well rigidity estimate which has been derived in [32] for a model with anisotropic second-order perturbation.

The double-well potential is allowed to be singular (e.g. of logarithmic type), while the singularity of the convolution kernel does not fall in any available existence theory under Neumann boundary conditions. We prove well-posedness for the nonlocal equation in a suitable variational sense. Secondly, we show that the solutions to the nonlocal equation converge to the corresponding solutions to the local equation, as the convolution kernels approximate a Dirac delta. The asymptotic behaviour is analyzed by means of monotone analysis and Gamma convergence results, both when the limiting local Cahn-Hilliard equation is of viscous type and of pure type.

In this paper we analyze an isothermal and isotropic model for viscoelastic media combining linearized perfect plasticity (allowing for concentration of plastic strain and development of shear bands) and damage effects in a dynamic setting. The interplay between the viscoelastic rheology with inertia, elasto-plasticity, and unidirectional rate-dependent incomplete damage affecting both the elastic and viscous response, as well as the plastic yield stress, is rigorously characterized by showing existence of weak solutions to the constitutive and balance equations of the model. The analysis relies on the notions of plastic-strain measures and bounded-deformation displacements, on sophisticated time-regularity estimates to establish a duality between acceleration and velocity of the elastic displacement, on the theory of rate-independent processes for the energy conservation in the dynamical-plastic part, and on the proof of the strong convergence of the elastic strains. Existence of a suitably defined weak solutions is proved rather constructively by using a staggered two-step time discretization scheme.

Existence and uniqueness of solutions for nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equations with degenerate potential is shown. The nonlocality is described by means of a symmetric singular kernel not falling within the framework of any previous existence theory. A convection term is also taken into account. Building upon this novel existence result, we prove convergence of solutions for this class of nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equations to their local counterparts, as the nonlocal convolution kernels approximate a Dirac delta. Eventually, we show that, under suitable assumptions on the data, the solutions to the nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equations exhibit further regularity, and the nonlocal-to-local convergence is verified in a stronger topology.

In this work, we study the effective behavior of a two-dimensional variational model within finite crystal plasticity for high-contrast bilayered composites. Precisely, we consider materials arranged into periodically alternating thin horizontal strips of an elastically rigid component and a softer one with one active slip system. The energies arising from these modeling assumptions are of integral form, featuring linear growth and non-convex differential constraints. We approach this non-standard homogenization problem via Gamma-convergence. A crucial first step in the asymptotic analysis is the characterization of rigidity properties of limits of admissible deformations in the space $BV$ of functions of bounded variation. In particular, we prove that, under suitable assumptions, the two-dimensional body may split horizontally into finitely many pieces, each of which undergoes shear deformation and global rotation. This allows us to identify a potential candidate for the homogenized limit energy, which we show to be a lower bound on the Gamma-limit. In the framework of non-simple materials, we present a complete Gamma-convergence result, including an explicit homogenization formula, for a regularized model with an anisotropic penalization in the layer direction.

Building upon this novel rigidity result, we then analyze solid-solid phase transitions in arbitrary space dimensions, under a suitable anisotropic penalization of second variations. By means of $Γ$-convergence, we show that, as the size of transition layers tends to zero, singularly perturbed two-well problems approach an effective sharp-interface model. The limiting energy is finite only for deformations which have the structure of a laminate. In this case, it is proportional to the total length of the interfaces between the two phases.

We present here an analysis of the regularity of minimizers of a variational model for epitaxially strained thin-films identified by the authors in the companion paper [Davoli E., Piovano P., Derivation of a heteroepitaxial thin-film model. Submitted 2018]. The regularity of energetically-optimal film profiles is studied by extending previous methods and by develo** new ideas based on transmission problems. The achieved regularity results relate to both the Stranski-Krastanow and the Volmer-Weber modes, the possibility of different elastic properties between the film and the substrate, and the presence of the surface tensions of all three involved interfaces: film/gas, substrate/gas, and film/substrate. Finally, geometrical conditions are provided for the optimal wetting angle, i.e., the angle formed at the contact point of films with the substrate. In particular, the Young-Dupré law is shown to hold, yielding what appears to be the first analytical validation of such law for a thin-film model in the context of Continuum Mechanics.

The one-dimensional evolution equation under consideration includes a transport term, whose presence prevents from identifying a gradient flow structure. Existence and uniqueness of solutions, together with continuous dependence on the initial data and an energy equality are proved by combining a minimizing movement scheme with a fixed point argument. Finally, it is shown that, when the contribution of the transport term is small, the equation possesses a global attractor and converges, as the transport term tends to zero, to a purely diffusive Cahn-Hilliard equation.

A variational model for epitaxially-strained thin films on rigid substrates is derived both by Γ-convergence from a transition-layer setting, and by relaxation from a sharp-interface description available in the literature for regular configurations. The model is characterized by a configurational energy that accounts for both the competing mechanisms responsible for the film shape. On the one hand, the lattice mismatch between the film and the substrate generate large stresses, and corrugations may be present because film atoms move to release the elastic energy. On the other hand, flatter profiles may be preferable to minimize the surface energy. Some first regularity results are presented for energetically-optimal film profiles.
