The parallel alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm is widely recognized for its effectiveness in handling large-scale datasets stored in a distributed manner, making it a popular choice for solving statistical learning models. However, there is currently limited research on parallel algorithms specifically designed for high-dimensional regression with combined (composite) regularization terms. These terms, such as elastic-net, sparse group lasso, sparse fused lasso, and their nonconvex variants, have gained significant attention in various fields due to their ability to incorporate prior information and promote sparsity within specific groups or fused variables. The scarcity of parallel algorithms for combined regularizations can be attributed to the inherent nonsmoothness and complexity of these terms, as well as the absence of closed-form solutions for certain proximal operators associated with them. In this paper, we propose a unified constrained optimization formulation based on the consensus problem for these types of convex and nonconvex regression problems and derive the corresponding parallel ADMM algorithms. Furthermore, we prove that the proposed algorithm not only has global convergence but also exhibits linear convergence rate. Extensive simulation experiments, along with a financial example, serve to demonstrate the reliability, stability, and scalability of our algorithm. The R package for implementing the proposed algorithms can be obtained at https://github.com/xfwu1016/CPADMM.

In many statistical modeling problems, such as classification and regression, it is common to encounter sparse and blocky coefficients. Sparse fused Lasso is specifically designed to recover these sparse and blocky structured features, especially in cases where the design matrix has ultrahigh dimensions, meaning that the number of features significantly surpasses the number of samples. Quantile loss is a well-known robust loss function that is widely used in statistical modeling. In this paper, we propose a new sparse fused lasso classification model, and develop a unified multi-block linearized alternating direction method of multipliers algorithm that effectively selects sparse and blocky features for regression and classification. Our algorithm has been proven to converge with a derived linear convergence rate. Additionally, our algorithm has a significant advantage over existing methods for solving ultrahigh dimensional sparse fused Lasso regression and classification models due to its lower time complexity. Note that the algorithm can be easily extended to solve various existing fused Lasso models. Finally, we present numerical results for several synthetic and real-world examples, which demonstrate the robustness, scalability, and accuracy of the proposed classification model and algorithm

Recently, deep unfolding methods that guide the design of deep neural networks (DNNs) through iterative algorithms have received increasing attention in the field of inverse problems. Unlike general end-to-end DNNs, unfolding methods have better interpretability and performance. However, to our knowledge, their accuracy and stability in solving inverse problems cannot be fully guaranteed. To bridge this gap, we modified the training procedure and proved that the unfolding method is an iterative regularization method. More precisely, we jointly learn a convex penalty function adversarially by an input-convex neural network (ICNN) to characterize the distance to a real data manifold and train a DNN unfolded from the proximal gradient descent algorithm with this learned penalty. Suppose the real data manifold intersects the inverse problem solutions with only the unique real solution. We prove that the unfolded DNN will converge to it stably. Furthermore, we demonstrate with an example of MRI reconstruction that the proposed method outperforms conventional unfolding methods and traditional regularization methods in terms of reconstruction quality, stability and convergence speed.

In this paper, we propose a new approach for stochastic control problems arising from utility maximization. The main idea is to directly start from the dynamical programming equation and compute the conditional expectation using a novel representation of the conditional density function through the Dirac Delta function and the corresponding series representation. We obtain an explicit series representation of the value function, whose coefficients are expressed through integration of the value function at a later time point against a chosen basis function. Thus we are able to set up a recursive integration time-step** scheme to compute the optimal value function given the known terminal condition, e.g. utility function. Due to tensor decomposition property of the Dirac Delta function in high dimensions, it is straightforward to extend our approach to solving high-dimensional stochastic control problems. The backward recursive nature of the method also allows for solving stochastic control and stop** problems, i.e. mixed control problems. We illustrate the method through solving some two-dimensional stochastic control (and stop**) problems, including the case under the classical and rough Heston stochastic volatility models, and stochastic local volatility models such as the stochastic alpha beta rho (SABR) model.

In this paper, a subexponential density supported on $\mathbb{R}^+\cup\{0\}$ without the almost decrease is constructed by a little skillful method. The density is a positive piecewise linear function with a more normal shape. Correspondingly, there exists a local subexponential distribution which is not locally almost decreasing. Based on an example of Cline \cite{C1986}, some similar results are also obtained for the long-tailed density excluding the subexponential density and the local long-tailed distribution excluding the local subexponential distribution. Finally, the paper shows that, for the local subexponentiality of a distribution supported on $\mathbb{R}$, the local almost decreasing condition is necessary in some sense.

We consider estimating an expected infinite-horizon cumulative discounted cost/reward contingent on an underlying stochastic process by Monte Carlo simulation. An unbiased estimator based on truncating the cumulative cost at a random horizon is proposed. Explicit forms for the optimal distributions of the random horizon are given, and explicit expressions for the optimal random truncation level are obtained, leading to a full analysis of the bias-variance tradeoff when comparing this new class of randomized estimators with traditional fixed truncation estimators. Moreover, we characterize when the optimal randomized estimator is preferred over a fixed truncation estimator by considering the tradeoff between bias and variance. This comparison provides guidance on when to choose randomized estimators over fixed truncation estimators in practice. Numerical experiments substantiate the theoretical results.

This study proposes a deep generative adversarial architecture (GAA) for network-wide spatial-temporal traffic state estimation. The GAA is able to combine traffic flow theory with neural networks and thus improve the accuracy of traffic state estimation. It consists of two Long Short-Term Memory Neural Networks (LSTM NNs) which capture correlation in time and space among traffic flow and traffic density. One of the LSTM NNs, called a discriminative network, aims to maximize the probability of assigning correct labels to both true traffic state matrices (i.e., traffic flow and traffic density within a given spatial-temporal area) and the traffic state matrices generated from the other neural network. The other LSTM NN, called a generative network, aims to generate traffic state matrices which maximize the probability that the discriminative network assigns true labels to them. The two LSTM NNs are trained simultaneously such that the trained generative network can generate traffic matrices similar to those in the training data set. Given a traffic state matrix with missing values, we use back-propagation on three defined loss functions to map the corrupted matrix to a latent space. The map** vector is then passed through the pre-trained generative network to estimate the missing values of the corrupted matrix. The proposed GAA is compared with the existing Bayesian network approach on loop detector data collected from Seattle, Washington and that collected from San Diego, California. Experimental results indicate that the GAA can achieve higher accuracy in traffic state estimation than the Bayesian network approach.

In this paper, according to a certain criterion, we divide the exponential distribution class into three subclasses. One of them is closely related to the regular-variation-tailed distribution class, so it is called the semi-regular-variation-tailed distribution class. In the class, although all distributions are not convolution equivalent, they still have some good properties. We give the precise tail asymptotic expression of convolution of these distributions, and prove that the new class is closed under convolution. In addition, we do not need to require the corresponding random variables to be identically distributed. Finally, we apply these results to a discrete time risk model with stochastic returns, and obtain the precise asymptotic estimation of the finite time ruin probability.

In this paper, we present several heavy-tailed distributions belonging to the new class J of distributions obeying the principle of a single big jump introduced by Beck et al. [1]. We describe the structure of this class from different angles. First, we show that heavy-tailed distributions in the class J are automatically strongly heavy-tailed and thus have tails which are not too irregular. Second, we show that such distributions are not necessarily weakly tail equivalent to a subexponential distribution. We also show that the class of heavy-tailed distributions in J which are neither long-tailed nor dominatedly-varying-tailed is not only non-empty but even quite rich in the sense that it has a nonempty intersection with several other well-established classes. In addition, the integrated tail distribution of some particular of these distributions shows that the Pakes-Veraverbeke-Embrechts Theorem for the class J in [1] does not hold trivially.

In this paper we give a new proof to an Engelbert-Schmidt type zero-one law for time-homogeneous diffusions, which provides deterministic criteria for the convergence of integral functional of diffusions. Our proof is based on a slightly stronger assumption than that in Mijatović and Urusov (2012), and utilizes stochastic time change and Feller's test of explosions. It does not rely on advanced methods such as the first Ray-Knight theorem, Wiliam's theorem, Shepp's dichotomy result for Gaussian processes or Jeulin's lemma as in the previous literature(see Mijatović and Urusov (2012) for a pointer to the literature). The new proof has an intuitive interpretation as we link the integral functional to the explosion time of an associated diffusion process.

In this paper we study the stochastic area swept by a regular time-homogeneous diffusion till a stop** time. This unifies some recent literature in this area. Through stochastic time change we establish a link between the stochastic area and the stop** time of another associated time-homogeneous diffusion. Then we characterize the Laplace transform of the stochastic area in terms of the eigenfunctions of the associated diffusion. We also explicitly obtain the integer moments of the stochastic area in terms of scale and speed densities of the associated diffusion. Specifically we study in detail three stop** times: the first passage time to a constant level, the first drawdown time and the Azema-Yor stop** time. More generally, for a positive integer $k$ there are $k$-conflict-free colorings ($k$-CF-colorings for short) and $k$-strong-conflict-free colorings ($k$-SCF-colorings for short). %for some positive integer $k$. Conflict-free coloring is a kind of vertex coloring of hypergraphs requiring each hyperedge to have a color which appears only on one vertex. More generally, for a positive integer $k$ there are $k$-conflict-free colorings ($k$-CF-colorings for short) and $k$-strong-conflict-free colorings ($k$-SCF-colorings for short). %for some positive integer $k$. Let $H_n$ be the hypergraph of which the vertex-set is $V_n=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ and the hyperedge-set $\cal{E}_n$ is the set of all (non-empty) subsets of $V_n$ consisting of consecutive elements of $V_n$. Firstly, we study the $k$-SCF-coloring of $H_n$, give the exact $k$-SCF-coloring chromatic number of $H_n$ for $k=2,3$, and present upper and lower bounds of the $k$-SCF-coloring chromatic number of $H_n$ for all $k$. Secondly, we give the exact $k$-CF-coloring chromatic number of $H_n$ for all $k$.
