Local Spectral Optimisation for Robin Problems with Negative Boundary Parameter on Quadrilaterals
Abstract: We investigate the Robin eigenvalue problem for the Laplacian with negative boundary parameter on quadrilateral domains of fixed area. In this paper, we prove that the square is a local maximiser of the first eigenvalue with respect to the Hausdorff metric. We also provide asymptotic results relating to the optimality of the square for extreme values of the Robin parameter.

The vanishing of the fundamental gap of convex domains in $\mathbb H^n$
Abstract: For the Laplace operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions on convex domains in $\mathbb H^n$, $n\geq 2$, we prove that the product of the fundamental gap with the square of the diameter can be arbitrarily small for domains of any diameter.

Ancient solutions for flow by powers of the curvature in $\mathbb R^2$
Abstract: We construct a new compact convex embedded ancient solution of the $κ^α$ flow in $\mathbb R^2$, $α\in(\frac12,1)$ that lies between two parallel lines. Using this solution we classify all convex ancient solutions of the $κ^α$ flow in $\mathbb R^2$, for $α\in(\frac23,1)$. Moreover, we show that any non-compact convex embedded ancient solution of the $κ^α$ flow in $\mathbb R^2$, $α\in(\frac12,1)$ mu… ▽ More

The fundamental gap for a one-dimensional Schrödinger operator with Robin boundary conditions
Abstract: For Schrödinger operators on an interval with either convex or symmetric single-well potentials, and Robin or Neumann boundary conditions, the gap between the two lowest eigenvalues is minimised when the potential is constant. We also have results for the $p$-Laplacian.

Explicit fundamental gap estimates for some convex domains in $\mathbb H^2$
Abstract: Motivated by an example of Shih, we compute the fundamental gap of a family of convex domains in the hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H^2$, showing that for some of them $λ_2 - λ_1 < \frac{3π^2}{D^2}$, where $D$ is the diameter of the domain and $λ_1$, $λ_2$ are the first and second Dirichlet eigenvalues of the Laplace operator on the domain. The result contrasts with what is known in $\mathbb R^n $ or… ▽ More

Non-concavity of Robin eigenfunctions
Abstract: On a convex bounded Euclidean domain, the ground state for the Laplacian with Neumann boundary conditions is a constant, while the Dirichlet ground state is log-concave. The Robin eigenvalue problem can be considered as interpolating between the Dirichlet and Neumann cases, so it seems natural that the Robin ground state should have similar concavity properties. In this paper we show that this is… ▽ More

Lipschitz bounds for solutions of quasilinear parabolic equations in one space variable
Abstract: We bound the modulus of continuity of solutions to quasilinear parabolic equations in one space variable in terms of the initial modulus of continuity and elapsed time. In particular we characterize those equations for which the Lipschitz constants of solutions can be bounded in terms of their initial oscillation and elapsed time.

Sharp modulus of continuity for parabolic equations on manifolds and lower bounds for the first eigenvalue
Abstract: We derive sharp estimates on modulus of continuity for solutions of the heat equation on a compact Riemannian manifold with a Ricci curvature bound, in terms of initial oscillation and elapsed time. As an application, we give an easy proof of the optimal lower bound on the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian on such a manifold as a function of diameter.

Proof of the fundamental gap conjecture
Abstract: We prove the Fundamental Gap Conjecture, which states that the difference between the first two Dirichlet eigenvalues (the spectral gap) of a Schrödinger operator with convex potential and Dirichlet boundary data on a convex domain is bounded below by the spectral gap on an interval of the same diameter with zero potential. More generally, for an arbitrary smooth potential in higher dimensions, ou… ▽ More

Stability of mean convex cones under mean curvature flow
Abstract: We consider graphical solutions to mean curvature flow and obtain a stability result for homothetically expanding solutions coming out of cones of positive mean curvature: If another solution is initially close to the cone at infinity, then the difference to the homothetically expanding solution becomes small for large times. The proof involves the construction of appropriate barriers.

The Capillarity Problem for Compressible Liquids
Abstract: In this paper we study existence and regularity of solutions to the capillarity problem for compressible liquids in a tube. We introduce an appropriate space of functions of bounded variation, in which the energy functional recently introduced by Robert Finn can be defined. We prove existence of a locally Lipschitz minimiser in this class.

Interior Gradient Estimates for Anisotropic Mean Curvature Flow
Abstract: In this paper we consider the evolution of a graph-like hypersurface by anisotropic mean curvature flow, under some restrictions on the anisotropic area integrand. We find interior estimates (in both time and space) on the gradient of such hypersurfaces, depending only on the height of the graph and the anisotropic area integrand.

Parabolic equations with continuous initial data
Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to derive new gradient estimates for parabolic equations. The gradient estimates found are independent of the regularity of the initial data. This allows us to prove the existence of solutions to problems that have non-smooth, continuous initial data. We include existence proofs for problems with both Neumann and Dirichlet boundary data.
