Modeling, Inference, and Prediction in Mobility-Based Compartmental Models for Epidemiology
Abstract: Classical compartmental models in epidemiology often struggle to accurately capture real-world dynamics due to their inability to address the inherent heterogeneity of populations. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach that incorporates heterogeneity through a mobility variable, transforming the traditional ODE system into a system of integro-differential equations that describe the dynamic… ▽ More

Convolution Identities of Stirling Numbers
Abstract: By means of the generating function method, a linear recurrence relation is explicitly resolved. The solution is expressed in terms of the Stirling numbers of both the first and the second kind. Two remarkable pairs of combinatorial identities are established as applications, that contain some well-known convolution formulae on Stirling numbers as special cases.

An electro-hydrodynamics modeling of droplet actuation on solid surface by surfactant-mediated electro-dewetting
Abstract: We propose an electro-hydrodynamics model to describe the dynamic evolution of a slender drop containing a dilute ionic surfactant on a naturally wettable surface, with a varying external electric field. This unified model reproduces fundamental microfluidic operations controlled by electrical signals, including dewetting, rewetting, and droplet shifting. In this paper, lubrication theory analysis… ▽ More

Inference of interaction kernels in mean-field models of opinion dynamics
Abstract: In models of opinion dynamics, many parameters -- either in the form of constants or in the form of functions -- play a critical role in describing, calibrating, and forecasting how opinions change with time. When examining a model of opinion dynamics, it is beneficial to infer its parameters using empirical data. In this paper, we study an example of such an inference problem. We consider a mean-… ▽ More

Non-Markovian models of opinion dynamics on temporal networks
Abstract: Traditional models of opinion dynamics, in which the nodes of a network change their opinions based on their interactions with neighboring nodes, consider how opinions evolve either on time-independent networks or on temporal networks with edges that follow Poisson statistics. Most such models are Markovian. However, in many real-life networks, interactions between individuals (and hence the edges… ▽ More

A density description of a bounded-confidence model of opinion dynamics on hypergraphs
Abstract: Social interactions often occur between three or more agents simultaneously. Examining opinion dynamics on hypergraphs allows one to study the effect of such polyadic interactions on the opinions of agents. In this paper, we consider a bounded-confidence model (BCM), in which opinions take continuous values and interacting agents comprise their opinions if they are close enough to each other. We s… ▽ More

$q$-Analogues of $π$-Related Formulae from Jackson's $_8φ_7$-Series via Inversion Approach
Abstract: By making use of the multiplicate form of the extended Carlitz inverse series relations, we establish two general `dual' theorems of Jackson's summation formula for well--poised $_8φ_7$-series. Their duplicate forms under the partition pattern $n=\lfloor{\frac{n}2}\rfloor+\lfloor{\frac{n+1}2}\rfloor$ are explored and yield numerous $q$-series identities whose limiting cases as $q\to1$ result in cl… ▽ More

A Projection-based Reduced-order Method for Electron Transport Problems with Long-range Interactions
Abstract: Long-range interactions play a central role in electron transport. At the same time, they present a challenge for direct computer simulations, since sufficiently large portions of the bath have to be included in the computation to accurately compute the Coulomb potential. This article presents a reduced-order approach, by deriving an open quantum model for the reduced density-matrix. To treat the… ▽ More

Abstract: By applying multiplicate forms of the Carlitz inverse series relations to the $q$-Pfaff-Saalsch{ü}tz summation theorem, we establish twenty five nonterminating $q$-series identities with several of them serving as $q$-analogues of infinite series expressions for $π$ and $1/π$, including some typical ones discovered by Ramanujan (1914) and Guillera.

Two efficient gradient methods with approximately optimal stepsizes based on regularization models for unconstrained optimization
Abstract: It is widely accepted that the stepsize is of great significance to gradient method. Two efficient gradient methods with approximately optimal stepsizes mainly based on regularization models are proposed for unconstrained optimization. Abstract: We consider a supercritical Galton-Watson branching process with immigration. Small value probabilities for ${\mathcal{W}}$ are obtained. Precise effects of the balance between offspring and immigration distri… ▽ More
