In this paper we consider a classical model of gasless combustion in a one dimensional formulation under the assumption of ignition temperature kinetics. We study the propagation of flame fronts in this model when the initial distribution of the solid fuel is a spatially periodic function that varies on a large scale. It is shown that in certain parametric regimes the model supports periodic traveling fronts. An accurate asymptotic formula for the velocity of the flame front is derived and studied. The stability of periodic fronts is also explored, and a critical condition in terms of parameters of the problem is derived. It is also shown that the instability of periodic fronts, in a certain parametric regimes, results in a propagation-extinction-diffusion-reignition pattern which is studied numerically.

It implies the convergence of the discounted value of bonds that stands as an attenuated traveling wave solution.

In this paper, we consider a reaction-diffusion system describing the propagation of flames under the assumption of ignition-temperature kinetics and fractional reaction order. It was shown in [3] that this system admits a traveling front solution. In the present work, we show that this traveling front is unique up to translations. We also study some qualitative properties of this solution using the combination of formal asymptotics and numerics. Our findings allow conjecture that the velocity of the propagation of the flame front is a decreasing function of all of the parameters of the problem: ignition temperature, reaction order and an inverse of the Lewis number.

The latter are the level sets of the solution but of different kinds. One is from the discontinuous second order term, the other from the obstacle. Existence, uniqueness, and regularity of the solution are obtained. We also prove that two free boundaries are $C^\infty$. The asymptotic behavior of the solution is also considered: we show that it converges to a traveling wave solution when time goes to infinity. Moreover, numerical results are presented.

In this paper we consider a system of two reaction-diffusion equations that models diffusional-thermal combustion with stepwise ignition-temperature kinetics and fractional reaction order 0 < $α$ < 1. We turn the free interface problem into a scalar free boundary problem coupled with an integral equation. The main intermediary step is to reduce the scalar problem to the study of a non-C 1 vector field in dimension 2. The latter is treated by qualitative topo-logical methods based on the Poincar{é}-Bendixson Theorem. The phase portrait is determined and the existence of a stable manifold at the origin is proved. A significant result is that the settling time to reach the origin is finite, meaning that the trailing interface is finite in contrast to the case $α$ = 1, but in accordance with $α$ = 0. Finally, the integro-differential system is solved via a fixed-point method.

In this paper we analyze the stability of the traveling wave solution for an ignition-temperature, first-order reaction model of thermo-diffusive combustion, in the case of high Lewis numbers (${\rm Le} >1$). The system of two parabolic PDEs is characterized by a free interface at which ignition temperature $Θ_i$ is reached. We turn the model to a fully nonlinear problem in a fixed domain. When the Lewis number is large, we define a bifurcation parameter $m=Θ_i/(1-Θ_i)$ and a perturbation parameter $\varepsilon= 1/{\rm Le}$. The main result is the existence of a critical value $m^c(\varepsilon)$ close to $m^c=6$ at which Hopf bifurcation holds for $\varepsilon$ small enough. Proofs combine spectral analysis and non-standard application of Hurwitz Theorem with asymptotics as $\varepsilon\to 0$.

The latter interface presents an additional difficulty because the non-degeneracy condition is not met. We turn the system to a fully nonlinear problem which is thoroughly investigated. When the width $\ell$ of the strip is sufficiently large, we prove the existence of a critical value $Le_c$ of the Lewis number $Le$, such that the one-dimensional, planar, solution is unstable for $0<Le<Le_c$. Some numerical simulations confirm the analysis.

Abstract:
We consider a free interface problem which stems from a solid-gas model in combustion with pattern formation. We derive a third-order, fully nonlinear, self-consistent equation for the flame front. Asymptotic methods reveal that the interface approaches a solution of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation. Numerical results are presented which illustrate the dynamics.

This simplification allows, near the planar front, an explicit derivation of the front equation. The latter is a pseudodifferential fully nonlinear parabolic equation of the fourth-order. First, we study the (orbital) stability of the null solution. Second, introducing a parameter $ε$, we rescale both the dependent and independent variables and prove rigourously the convergence to the solution of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation as $ε\to 0$.

In this paper we are interested in a rigorous derivation of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation (K--S) in a Free Boundary Problem. As a paradigm, we consider a two-dimensional Stefan problem in a strip, a simplified version of a solid-liquid interface model. Near the instability threshold, we introduce a small parameter $\varepsilon$ and define rescaled variables accordingly. At fixed $\varepsilon$, our method is based on: definition of a suitable linear 1D operator, projection with respect to the longitudinal coordinate only, Lyapunov-Schmidt method. As a solvability condition, we derive a self-consistent parabolic equation for the front. We prove that, starting from the same configuration, the latter remains close to the solution of K--S on a fixed time interval, uniformly in $\varepsilon$ sufficiently small.

We consider the basic model of virus dynamics in the modeling of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), in a 2D heterogenous environment. It consists of two ODEs for the non-infected and infected $CD_4^+$ $T$ lymphocytes, $T$ and $I$, and a parabolic PDE for the virus $V$. We define a new parameter $λ_0$ as an eigenvalue of some Sturm-Liouville problem, which takes the heterogenous reproductive ratio into account. For $λ_0<0$ the trivial non-infected solution is the only equilibrium. When $λ_0>0$, the former becomes unstable whereas there is only one positive infected equilibrium. Considering the model as a dynamical system, we prove the existence of a universal attractor. Finally, in the case of an alternating structure of viral sources, we define a homogenized limiting environment. The latter justifies the classical approach via ODE systems.
