Our estimates are consistent with the boundary behavior of solutions on smooth domains and apply to fractional $p$-Laplacians and operators with finite horizon. The proof exploits the underlying variational structure and uses a new and flexible local translation operator. We further apply these regularity estimates to derive novel error estimates for finite element approximations of fractional $p$-Laplacians and present several simulations that reveal the boundary behavior of solutions.

This survey hinges on the interplay between regularity and approximation for linear and quasi-linear fractional elliptic problems on Lipschitz domains. For the linear Dirichlet integral Laplacian, after briefly recalling Hölder regularity and applications, we discuss novel optimal shift theorems in Besov spaces and their Sobolev counterparts. These results extend to problems with finite horizon and are instrumental for the subsequent error analysis. Moreover, we dwell on extensions of Besov regularity to the fractional $p$-Laplacian, and review the regularity of fractional minimal graphs and stickiness. We discretize these problems using continuous piecewise linear finite elements and derive global and local error estimates for linear problems, thereby improving some existing error estimates for both quasi-uniform and graded meshes. We also present a BPX preconditioner which turns out to be robust with respect to both the fractional order and the number of levels. We conclude with the discretization of fractional quasi-linear problems and their error analysis. We illustrate the theory with several illuminating numerical experiments.

It is known that solutions to the Dirichlet problem involving such an operator exhibit an algebraic boundary singularity regardless of the domain regularity. This, in turn, deteriorates the global regularity of solutions and as a result the global convergence rate of the numerical solutions. For finite element discretizations, we derive local error estimates in the $H^s$-seminorm and show optimal convergence rates in the interior of the domain by only assuming meshes to be shape-regular. These estimates quantify the fact that the reduced approximation error is concentrated near the boundary of the domain. We illustrate our theoretical results with several numerical examples.

This chapter is about the modeling of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) and their numerical simulation. We begin with an overview of the basic physics of LCs and discuss some of their many applications. Next, we delve into the modeling arguments needed to obtain macroscopic order parameters which can be used to formulate a continuum model. We then survey different continuum descriptions, namely the Oseen-Frank, Ericksen, and Landau-deGennes ($\mathbf{Q}$-tensor) models, which essentially model the LC material like an anisotropic elastic material. In particular, we review the mathematical theory underlying the three different continuum models and highlight the different trade-offs of using these models.
Next, we consider the numerical simulation of these models with a survey of various methods, with a focus on the Ericksen model. We then show how techniques from the Ericksen model can be combined with the Landau-deGennes model to yield a $\mathbf{Q}$-tensor model that exactly enforces uniaxiality, which is relevant for modeling many nematic LC systems. This is followed by an in-depth numerical analysis, using tools from $Γ$-convergence, to justify our discrete method. We also show several numerical experiments and comparisons with the standard Landau-deGennes model.

We prove stability and consistency of the method without regularization, and $Γ$-convergence of the discrete energies towards the continuous one as the mesh size goes to zero. We design an alternating direction gradient flow algorithm for the solution of the discrete problems, and we show that such a scheme decreases the energy monotonically. Such a Plateau problem of order $s$ can be reinterpreted as a Dirichlet problem for a nonlocal, nonlinear, degenerate operator of order $s + 1/2$. We prove that our numerical scheme converges in $W^{2r}_1(Ω)$ for all $r<s$, where $W^{2s}_1(Ω)$ is closely related to the natural energy space. Moreover, we introduce a geometric notion of error that, for any pair of $H^1$ functions, in the limit $s \to 1/2$ recovers a weighted $L^2$-discrepancy between the normal vectors to their graphs. We derive error bounds with respect to this novel geometric quantity as well. In spite of performing approximations with continuous, piecewise linear, Lagrangian finite elements, the so-called {\em stickiness} phenomenon becomes apparent in the numerical experiments we present.

We consider the numerical solution of the fractional Laplacian of index $s\in(1/2,1)$ in a bounded domain $Ω$ with homogeneous boundary conditions. Its solution a priori belongs to the fractional order Sobolev space ${\widetilde H}^s(Ω)$. For the Dirichlet problem and under suitable assumptions on the data, it can be shown that its solution is also in $H^1(Ω)$. In this case, if one uses the standard Lagrange finite element to discretize the problem, then both the exact and the computed solution belong to $H^1(Ω)$. A natural question is then whether one can obtain error estimates in $H^1(Ω)$-norm, in addition to the classical ones that can be derived in the ${\widetilde H}^s(Ω)$ energy norm. We address this issue, and in particular we derive error estimates for the Lagrange finite element solutions on both quasi-uniform and graded meshes.

This paper presents regularity results and associated high-order numerical methods for one-dimensional Fractional-Laplacian boundary-value problems. On the basis of a factorization of solutions as a product of a certain edge-singular weight $ω$ times a "regular" unknown, a characterization of the regularity of solutions is obtained in terms of the smoothness of the corresponding right-hand sides. In particular, for right-hand sides which are analytic in a Bernstein Ellipse, analyticity in the same Bernstein Ellipse is obtained for the "regular" unknown. Moreover, a sharp Sobolev regularity result is presented which completely characterizes the co-domain of the Fractional-Laplacian operator in terms of certain weighted Sobolev spaces introduced in (Babuška and Guo, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 2002). The present theoretical treatment relies on a full eigendecomposition for a certain weighted integral operator in terms of the Gegenbauer polynomial basis. The proposed Gegenbauer-based Nyström numerical method for the Fractional-Laplacian Dirichlet problem, further, is significantly more accurate and efficient than other algorithms considered previously. The sharp error estimates presented in this paper indicate that the proposed algorithm is spectrally accurate, with convergence rates that only depend on the smoothness of the right-hand side. In particular, convergence is exponentially fast (resp. faster than any power of the mesh-size) for analytic (resp. in nitely smooth) right-hand sides. The properties of the algorithm are illustrated with a variety of numerical results.
