The goal of this numerical study is to get insight into singular solutions of the two-dimensional (2D) Euler equations for non-smooth initial data, in particular for vortex sheets. To this end high resolution computations of vortex layers in 2D incompressible Euler flows are performed using the characteristic map** method (CMM). This semi-Lagrangian method evolves the flow map using the gradient-augmented level set method (GALS). The semi-group structure of the flow map allows its decomposition into sub-maps (each over a finite time interval), and thus the precision can be controlled by choosing appropriate remap** times. Composing the flow map yields exponential resolution in linear time, a unique feature of CMM, and thus fine scale flow structures can be resolved in great detail. Here the roll-up process of vortex layers is studied varying the thickness of the layer showing its impact on the growth of palinstrophy and possible blow up of absolute vorticity. The curvature of the vortex sheet shows a singular-like behavior. The self-similar structure of the vortex core is investigated in the vanishing thickness limit. Conclusions on the non-uniqueness of weak solutions of 2D Euler for non-smooth initial data are drawn and the presence of flow singularities is revealed tracking them in the complex plane.

The flow map is evolved numerically and exponential resolution in linear time is obtained. Global third-order convergence in space and time is shown and conservation properties are assessed. For benchmarking, we consider linear and nonlinear Landau dam** and the two-stream instability. We compare the results with a Fourier pseudo-spectral method. The extreme fine-scale resolution features are illustrated showing the method's capabilities to efficiently treat filamentation in fusion plasma simulations.

Using the compactness results of arXiv:0904.1603 we show that connected components of the space of such maps can be compactified if they contain a global surface of section. As an application we prove that any contact structure on a 3--manifold admits and H--holomorphic open book decomposition. This work is motivated by the program laid out by Abbas, Cieliebak and Hofer to give a proof to the Weinstein conjecture using holomorphic curves. The results in this paper, with the exception of the compactness statement, have been independently obtained by C. Abbas in arXiv:0907.3512.

Compactness results for H-holomorphic maps

H-holomorphic maps are a parameter version of J-holomorphic maps into contact manifolds. They have arisen in efforts to prove the existence of higher--genus holomorphic open book decompositions and efforts to prove the existence of finite energy foliations and the Weinstein conjecture, as well as in folded holomorphic maps. For all these applications it is essential to understand the compactness properties of the space of H-holomorphic maps.
We prove that the space of H-holomorphic maps with bounded periods into a manifold with stable Hamiltonian structure possesses a natural compactification. Limits of smooth maps are "neck-nodal maps", i.e. their domains can be pictured as nodal domains where the node is replaced by a finite cylinder that converges to a twisted cylinder over a closed characteristic or a finite length characteristic flow line. We show by examples that compactness fails without the condition on the periods, and we give topological conditions that ensure compactness.

Abstract:
We study the existence and stability of holomorphic foliations in dimension greater than 4 under perturbations of the underlying almost complex structure. An example is given to show that, unlike in dimension 4, J-holomorphic foliations are not stable under large perturbations of almost complex structure.

Every oriented 4-manifold admits a folded symplectic structure, which in turn determines a homotopy class of compatible almost complex structures that are discontinuous across the folding hypersurface ("fold") in a controlled fashion. We define folded holomorphic maps, i.e. pseudo-holomorphic maps that are discontinuous across the fold. The boundary values on the fold are mediated by tunneling maps which are punctured H-holomorphic maps into the folding hypersurface with prescribed asymptotics on closed characteristics.
Our main result is that the linearized operator of this boundary value problem is Fredholm and thus we obtain well behaved local finite dimensional moduli spaces.
As examples we characterize the moduli space of maps into folded elliptic fibration and we construct examples of degree $d$ rational maps into $S^4$. Moreover we explicitly give the moduli space of degree 1 rational maps into $S^4$ and show that it possesses a natural compactification.
This aims to generalize the tools of holomorphic maps to all oriented 4-manifolds by utilizing folded symplectic structures.
