Abstract:
In this paper, we consider a system of heterogeneously interacting quantum particles subject to indirect continuous measurement. The interaction is assumed to be of the mean-field type. We derive a new limiting quantum graphon system, prove the well-posedness of this system, and establish a stability result.

This paper considers a simplified model of open quantum systems undergoing imperfect measurements obtained via a projection filter approach. We use this approximate filter in the feedback stabilization problem specifically in the case of Quantum Non-Demolition (QND) measurements. The feedback design relies on the structure of the exponential family utilized for the projection process. We demonstrate that the introduced feedback guarantees exponential convergence of the original filter equation toward a predefined target state, corresponding to an eigenstate of the measurement operator.

In this paper, we consider an open quantum system undergoing imperfect and indirect measurement. For quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement, we show that the system evolves on an appropriately chosen manifold and we express the exact solution of the quantum filter equation in terms of the solution of a lower dimensional stochastic differential equation. In order to further reduce the dimension of the system under study, we consider the projection on the lower dimensional manifold originally introduced in [1] for the case of perfect measurements. An error analysis is performed to evaluate the precision of this approximate quantum filter, focusing on the case of QND measurement. Simulations suggest the efficiency of the proposed quantum projection filter, even in presence of a stabilizing feedback control which depends on the projection filter.

We consider the question of asymptotic stability of quantum trajectories undergoing quantum non-demolition imperfect measurement, that is to say the convergence of the estimated trajectory towards the true trajectory whose parameters and initial state are not necessarily known. We give conditions on the estimated initial state and regions of validity for the estimated parameters so that this convergence is ensured. We illustrate these results through numerical simulations on the physical example [1] and discuss the asymptotic stability for a more realistic general case where decoherence acts on the system. In this case, the evolution is described by new Kraus operators which do not satisfy the quantum non-demolition property.

In this setting, the dynamics is described by a controlled Belavkin equation of McKean-Vlasov type. We prove the well-posedness of such an equation under imperfect measurement records. Furthermore, we show under purification assumption the propagation of chaos for perfect measurements. This paper generalizes the results in [30] concerning feedback stabilization of target states for N-level quantum angular momentum systems undergoing quantum non-demolition measurements (QND) in absence of the knowledge about initial states and parameters. Here we consider multiple measurement operators and study the stabilization toward a chosen target subspace which is a common eigenspace of measurement operators. Under the QND conditions, we show that this analysis provides necessary tools to ensure feedback stabilization based on a simplified filter whose state is a N-dimensional vector. A numerical analysis has been proposed in [18]. This paper provides a complete proof for the use of a simplified filter in feedback stabilization. This has important practical use as the dimension of quantum systems is usually high. This paper opens the way toward a complete proof concerning the robustness of a stabilizing feedback with respect to approximate filters, which is lacking.

A quantum trajectory describes the evolution of a quantum system undergoing indirect measurement. In the discrete-time setting, the state of the system is updated by applying Kraus operators according to the measurement results. From an experimental perspective, these Kraus operators can depend on unknown physical parameters p. An interesting and powerful method has been proposed in [1] to estimate a parameter in a finite set; however, complete results of convergence were lacking. This article fills this gap by rigorously showing the consistency of the method, whereas there was only numerical evidence so far. When the parameter belongs to a continuous set, we propose an algorithm to approach its value and show simulation results.

By considering multiple z-type (Pauli z matrix on different qubits) and x-type (Pauli x matrix on all qubits) measurements and one control Hamiltonian, we provide general conditions on the feedback controller and the control Hamiltonian ensuring almost sure exponential convergence to a predetermined Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state, which is assumed to be a common eigenstate of the measurement operators. In this paper, we consider N-level quantum angular momentum systems interacting with electromagnetic fields undergoing continuous-time measurements. We suppose unawareness of the initial state and physical parameters, entailing the introduction of an additional state representing the estimated quantum state. The evolution of the quantum state and its estimation is described by a coupled stochastic master equation. Here, we study the asymptotic behavior of such a system in presence of a feedback controller. We provide sufficient conditions on the feedback controller and on the estimated parameters that guarantee exponential stabilization of the coupled stochastic system towards an eigenstate of the measurement operator. Furthermore, we estimate the corresponding rate of convergence. We also provide parametrized feedback laws satisfying such conditions. Our results show the robustness of the feedback stabilization strategy considered in [21] in case of imprecise initialization of the estimated state and with respect to the unknown physical parameters.

We suppose that the initial states and the exact values of the physical parameters are unknown. We prove that the feedback stabilization strategy considered in [16] is robust to these imperfections. This is shown by studying the asymptotic behavior of the coupled stochastic master equations describing the evolutions of the actual state and the estimated one under appropriate assumptions on the feedback controller. We provide sufficient conditions on the feedback controller and a valid domain of estimated parameters which ensure exponential stabilization of the coupled system. In particular, we study feedback control of quantum spin-1/2 systems in the case of unawareness of initial states and in presence of measurement imperfections. We prove that the fidelity between the actual quantum filter and its associated estimated filter converges to one under appropriate assumption on the feedback controller. This shows the asymptotic convergence of such filters. In addition, for spin-J systems, we discuss heuristically the asymptotic behavior of the actual quantum filter and its associated estimated filter and the possibility of exponentially stabilizing such systems towards an eigenvector of the measurement operator by an appropriate feedback.

In classical filtering, the analogue algebra leads to a geometric theory of nonlinear filtering which leads to well-known results by Brockett and by Mitter characterizing potential models where the curse-of-dimensionality may be avoided, and finite dimensional filters obtained. We discuss the quantum analogue to these results. In particular, we see that, in the case where all outputs are subjected to homodyne measurement, the Lie algebra of super-operators is isomorphic to a Lie algebra of system operators from which one may approach the question of the existence of finite-dimensional filters.

The single-photon quantum filtering problems have been investigated recently with applications in quantum computing. In practice, the detector responds with a quantum efficiency of less than unity since there exists some mode mismatch between the detector and the system, and the single-photon signal may be corrupted by quantum white noise. Consequently, quantum filters based on multiple measurements are designed in this paper to improve the estimation performance. More specifically, the filtering equations for a two-level quantum system driven by a single-photon input state and under multiple measurements are presented in this paper. Four scenarios, 1) two diffusive measurements with Q-P quadrature form, 2) two diffusive measurements with Q-Q quadrature form, 3) diffusive plus Poissonian measurements, and 4) two Poissonian measurements, are considered. It is natural to compare the filtering results, i.e., measuring single channel or both channels, which one is better? By the simulation where we use a single photon to excite an atom, it seems that multiple measurements enable us to excite the atom with higher probability than only measuring single channel. In addition, measurement back-action phenomenon is revealed by the simulation results.

Filtering theory gives an explicit models for the flow of information and thereby quantifies the rates of change of information supplied to and dissipated from the filter's memory. Here we extend the analysis of Mitter and Newton from linear Gaussian models to general nonlinear filters involving Markov diffusions. The rates of entropy production are now generally the average squared-field (co-metric) of various logarithmic probability densities, which may be interpreted as Fisher information associate with Gaussian perturbations (via de Bruijn's identity). We show that the central connection is made through the Mayer-Wolf and Zakai Theorem for the rate of change of the mutual information between the filtered state and the observation history. In particular, we extend this Theorem to cover a Markov diffusion controlled by observations process, which may be interpreted as the filter acting as a Maxwell's Daemon applying feedback to the system.

Reservoir engineering is the term used in quantum control and information technologies to describe manipulating the environment within which an open quantum system operates. Reservoir engineering is essential in applications where storing quantum information is required. From the control theory perspective, a quantum system is capable of storing quantum information if it possesses a so-called decoherence free subsystem (DFS). This paper explores pole placement techniques to facilitate synthesis of decoherence free subsystems via coherent quantum feedback control. We discuss limitations of the conventional `open loop' approach and propose a constructive feedback design methodology for decoherence free subsystem engineering. It captures a quite general dynamic coherent feedback structure which allows systems with decoherence free modes to be synthesized from components which do not have such modes.
