We show the integrated density of states for a variety of Jacobi operators on graphs, such as the Anderson model and random hop** models on graphs with Gaussian heat kernel bounds, can be estimated from above and below in terms of the localization landscape counting function. Specific examples of these graphs include stacked and decorated lattices, graphs corresponding to band matrices, and aperiodic tiling graphs. The upper bound part of the landscape law also applies to the fractal Sierpinski gasket graph. As a consequence of the landscape law, we obtain landscape-based proofs of the Lifshitz tails in several models including random band matrix models, certain bond percolation Hamiltonians on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, and Jacobi operators on certain stacks of graphs. We also present intriguing numerical simulations exploring the behavior of the landscape counting function across various models.

Schrödinger bridge is a diffusion process that steers a given distribution to another in a prescribed time while minimizing the effort to do so. It can be seen as the stochastic dynamical version of the optimal mass transport, and has growing applications in generative diffusion models and stochastic optimal control. In this work, we propose a regularized variant of the Schrödinger bridge with a quadratic state cost-to-go that incentivizes the optimal sample paths to stay close to a nominal level. Unlike the conventional Schrödinger bridge, the regularization induces a state-dependent rate of killing and creation of probability mass, and its solution requires determining the Markov kernel of a reaction-diffusion partial differential equation. We derive this Markov kernel in closed form. Our solution recovers the heat kernel in the vanishing regularization (i.e., diffusion without reaction) limit, thereby recovering the solution of the conventional Schrödinger bridge. Our results enable the use of dynamic Sinkhorn recursion for computing the Schrödinger bridge with a quadratic state cost-to-go, which would otherwise be challenging to use in this setting. We deduce properties of the new kernel and explain its connections with certain exactly solvable models in quantum mechanics.

In 1730, Euler defined the Gamma function $Γ(x)$ by the integral representation. It possesses many interesting properties and has wide applications in various branches of mathematics and sciences. According to Lerch, the Gamma function $Γ(x)$ can also be defined by the derivative of the Hurwitz zeta function $$ζ(z,x)=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{1}{(n+x)^{z}}$$ at $z=0$. Recently, Hu and Kim defined the corresponding Stieltjes constants $\widetildeγ_{k}(x)$ and Euler constant $\widetildeγ_{0}$ from the Taylor series of the alternating Hurwitz zeta function $ζ_{E}(z,x)$ $$ζ_{E}(z,x)=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{(-1)^n}{(n+x)^z}.$$ And they also introduced the corresponding Gamma function $\widetildeΓ(x)$ which has the following Weierstrass--Hadamard type product $$\widetildeΓ(x)=\frac{1}{x}e^{\widetildeγ_{0}x}\prod_{k=1}^{\infty}\left(e^{-\frac{x}{k}}\left(1+\frac{x}{k}\right)\right)^{(-1)^{k+1}}.$$
In this paper, we shall further investigate the function $\widetildeΓ(x)$, that is, we obtain several properties in analogy to the classical Gamma function $Γ(x)$, including the integral representation, the limit representation, the recursive formula, the special values, the log-convexity, the duplication formula and the reflection equation. Furthermore, we also prove a Lerch-type formula, which shows that the derivative of $ζ_{E}(z,x)$ can be representative by $\widetildeΓ(x)$. As an application to Stark's conjecture in algebraic number theory, we will explicit calculate the derivatives of the partial zeta functions for the maximal real subfield of cyclotomic fields at $z=0$.

In this paper, we propose an $N$ oscillators Kuramoto model with quaternions $\mathbb{H}$. In case the coupling strength is strong, a sufficient condition of synchronization is established for general $N\geqslant 2$. On the other hand, we analyze the case when the coupling strength is weak. For $N=2$, when coupling strength is weak (below the critical coupling strength $λ_c$), we show that new periodic orbits emerge near each equilibrium point, and hence phase-locking state exists. This phenomenon is different from the real Kuramoto system since it is impossible to arrive at any synchronization when $λ<λ_c$. We prove a theorem that states a set of closed and dense contour forms near each equilibrium point, resembling a tree's growth rings. In other words, the trajectory of phase difference lies on a $4D$-torus surface. Therefore, this implies that the phase-locking state is Lyapunov stable but not asymptotically stable. The proof uses a new infinite buffer method (``$δ/n$ criterion") and a Lyapunov function argument. This has been studied both analytically and numerically. For $N=3$, we consider the ``Lion Dance flow", the analog of Cherry flow for our model, to demonstrate that the quaternionic synchronization exists even when the coupling strength is ``super weak" (when $λ/ω<0.85218915...$). Also, numerical evaluation reveals that when $N>3$, the stable manifold of Lion Dance flow exists, and the number of these equilibria is $\lfloor \frac{N-1}{2}\rfloor$. Therefore, we conjecture that Lyapunov stable quaternionic synchronization always exists.

Fractional diffusion and Fokker-Planck equations are widely used tools to describe anomalous diffusion in a large variety of complex systems. The equivalent formulations in terms of Caputo or Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives can be derived as continuum limits of continuous time random walks and are associated with the Mittag-Leffler relaxation of Fourier modes, interpolating between a short-time stretched exponential and a long-time inverse power-law scaling. More recently, a number of other integro-differential operators have been proposed, including the Caputo-Fabrizio and Atangana-Baleanu forms. Moreover, the conformable derivative has been introduced. We here study the dynamics of the associated generalized Fokker-Planck equations from the perspective of the moments, the time averaged mean squared displacements, and the autocovariance functions. We also study generalized Langevin equations based on these generalized operators. The differences between the Fokker-Planck and Langevin equations with different integro-differential operators are discussed and compared with the dynamic behavior of established models of scaled Brownian motion and fractional Brownian motion. We demonstrate that the integro-differential operators with exponential and Mittag-Leffler kernels are not suitable to be introduced to Fokker-Planck and Langevin equations for the physically relevant diffusion scenarios discussed in our paper. The conformable and Caputo Langevin equations are unveiled to share similar properties with scaled and fractional Brownian motion, respectively.

We are concerned with global finite-energy solutions of the three-dimensional compressible Euler-Poisson equations with gravitational potential and general pressure law, especially including the constitutive equation of white dwarf stars. We construct global finite-energy solutions of the Cauchy problem for the Euler-Poisson equations with large initial data of spherical symmetry as the inviscid limit of the solutions of the corresponding Cauchy problem for the Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations. The strong convergence of the vanishing viscosity solutions is achieved through entropy analysis, uniform estimates in $L^p$, and a more general compensated compactness framework via several new ingredients. A key estimate is first established for the integrability of the density over unbounded domains independent of the viscosity coefficient. Then a special entropy pair is carefully designed by solving a Goursat problem for the entropy equation such that a higher integrability of the velocity is established, which is a crucial step. Moreover, the weak entropy kernel for the general pressure law and its fractional derivatives of the required order near vacuum ($ρ=0$) and far-field ($ρ=\infty$) are carefully analyzed. Owing to the generality of the pressure law, only the $W^{-1,p}_{\rm loc}$-compactness of weak entropy dissipation measures with $p\in [1,2)$ can be obtained; this is rescued by the equi-integrability of weak entropy pairs which can be established by the estimates obtained above so that the div-curl lemma still applies. Finally, based on the above analysis of weak entropy pairs, the $L^p$ compensated compactness framework for the compressible Euler equations with general pressure law is established. This new compensated compactness framework and the techniques developed in this paper should be useful for solving further nonlinear problems with similar features.

We consider the localization landscape function $u$ and ground state eigenvalue $λ$ for operators on graphs. We first show that the maximum of the landscape function is comparable to the reciprocal of the ground state eigenvalue if the operator satisfies certain semigroup kernel upper bounds. This implies general upper and lower bounds on the landscape product $λ\|u\|_\infty$ for several models, including the Anderson model and random hop** (bond-disordered) models, on graphs that are roughly isometric to $\mathbb{Z}^d$, as well as on some fractal-like graphs such as the Sierpinski gasket graph. Next, we specialize to a random hop** model on $\mathbb{Z}$, and show that as the size of the chain grows, the landscape product $λ\|u\|_\infty$ approaches $π^2/8$ for Bernoulli off-diagonal disorder, and has the same upper bound of $π^2/8$ for Uniform([0,1]) off-diagonal disorder. We also numerically study the random hop** model when the band width (hop** distance) is greater than one, and provide strong numerical evidence that a similar approximation holds for low-lying energies in the spectrum.

The exact elementary excitations in a typical U(1) symmetry broken quantum integrable system, that is the twisted J1-J2 spin chain with nearest-neighbor, next nearest neighbor and chiral three spin interactions, are studied. The main technique is that we quantify the energy spectrum of the system by the zero roots of transfer matrix instead of the traditional Bethe roots. From the numerical calculation and singularity analysis, we obtain the patterns of zero roots. Based on them, we analytically obtain the ground state energy and the elementary excitations in the thermodynamic limit. We find that the system also exhibits the nearly degenerate states in the regime of $η\in \mathbb{R}$, where the nearest-neighbor couplings among the z-direction are ferromagnetic. More careful study shows that the competing of interactions can induce the gapless low-lying excitations and quantum phase transition in the antiferromagnetic regime with $η\in \mathbb{R}+iπ$.

The quantum circuit model is the most commonly used model for implementing quantum computers and quantum neural networks whose essential tasks are to realize certain unitary operations. Here we propose an alternative approach; we use a simple discrete-time quantum walk (DTQW) on a cycle graph to model an arbitrary unitary operation $U(N)$ without the need to decompose it into a sequence of gates of smaller sizes. Our model is essentially a quantum neural network based on DTQW. Firstly, it is universal as we show that any unitary operation $U(N)$ can be realized via an appropriate choice of coin operators. Secondly, our DTQW-based neural network can be updated efficiently via a learning algorithm, i.e., a modified stochastic gradient descent algorithm adapted to our network. By training this network, one can promisingly find approximations to arbitrary desired unitary operations. With an additional measurement on the output, the DTQW-based neural network can also implement general measurements described by positive-operator-valued measures (POVMs). We show its capacity in implementing arbitrary 2-outcome POVM measurements via numeric simulation. We further demonstrate that the network can be simplified and can overcome device noises during the training so that it becomes more friendly for laboratory implementations. Our work shows the capability of the DTQW-based neural network in quantum computation and its potential in laboratory implementations.

Based on the exact solution, the conserved momentum and charge operators of this U(1)-symmetry broken system are obtained. The ground state energy and density of rapidities are calculated. The resolution of $4$-dimensional massless field operators of higher spins was constructed by Eastwood-Penrose-Wells by using the twistor method. Recently physicists are interested in $6$-dimensional physics including the massless field operators of higher spins on Lorentzian space $\Bbb R^{5,1}$. Its Euclidean version $\mathscr{D}_0$ and their function theory are discussed in \cite{wangkang3}. In this paper, we construct an exact sequence of Hilbert spaces as weighted $L^2$ spaces resolving $\mathscr{D}_0$: $$L^2_\varphi(\Bbb R^6, \mathscr{V}_0)\overset{\mathscr{D}_0}\longrightarrow L^2_\varphi(\Bbb R^6,\mathscr{V}_1)\overset{\mathscr{D}_1}\longrightarrow L^2_\varphi(\Bbb R^6, \mathscr{V}_2)\overset{\mathscr{D}_2}\longrightarrow L^2_\varphi(\Bbb R^6, \mathscr{V}_3)\longrightarrow 0,$$ with suitable operators $\mathscr{D}_l$ and vector spaces $\mathscr{V}_l$. Namely, we can solve $\mathscr{D}_{l}u=f$ in $L^2_\varphi(\Bbb R^6, \mathscr{V}_{l})$ when $\mathscr{D}_{l+1} f=0$ for $f\in L^2_{\varphi}(\Bbb R^6, \mathscr{V}_{l+1})$. This is proved by using the $L^2$ method in the theory of several complex variables, which is a general framework to solve overdetermined PDEs under the compatibility condition. To apply this method here, it is necessary to consider weighted $L^2$ spaces, an advantage of which is that any polynomial is $L^2_{\varphi}$ integrable. As a corollary, we prove that $$ P(\Bbb R^6, \mathscr{V}_0)\overset{\mathscr{D}_0}\longrightarrow P(\Bbb R^6,\mathscr{V}_1)\overset{\mathscr{D}_1}\longrightarrow P(\Bbb R^6, \mathscr{V}_2)\overset{\mathscr{D}_2}\longrightarrow P(\Bbb R^6, \mathscr{V}_3)\longrightarrow 0$$ is a resolution, where $P(\Bbb R^6, \mathscr{V}_l)$ is the space of all $\mathscr{V}_l$-valued polynomials. This provides an analytic way to construct a resolution of a differential operator acting on vector valued polynomials.

Recent work [G. David, M. Filoche, and S. Mayboroda, arXiv:1909.10558[Adv. Math. (to be published)]] has proved the existence of bounds from above and below for the Integrated Density of States (IDOS) of the Schrödinger operator throughout the spectrum, called the landscape law. These bounds involve dimensional constants whose optimal values are yet to be determined. Here, we investigate the accuracy of the landscape law in 1D and 2D tight-binding Anderson models, with binary or uniform random distributions. We show, in particular, that in 1D, the IDOS can be approximated with high accuracy through a single formula involving a remarkably simple multiplicative energy shift. In 2D, the same idea applies but the prefactor has to be changed between the bottom and top parts of the spectrum.

We consider the discrete Schrödinger operator $H=-Δ+V$ on a cube $M\subset \mathbb{Z}^d$, with periodic or Dirichlet (simple) boundary conditions. We use a hidden landscape function $u$, defined as the solution of an inhomogeneous boundary problem with uniform right-hand side for $H$, to predict the location of the localized eigenfunctions of $H$. Explicit bounds on the exponential decay of Agmon type for low energy modes are obtained. This extends the recent work of Agmon type of localization in [5] for $\mathbb{R}^d$ to a tight-binding Hamiltonian on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ lattice. Contrary to the continuous case, high energy modes are as localized as the low energy ones in discrete lattices. We show that exponential decay estimates of Agmon type also appear near the top of the spectrum, where the location of the localized eigenfunctions is predicted by a different landscape function. Our results are deterministic and are independent of the size of the cube. We also provide numerical experiments to confirm the conditional results effectively, for some random potentials.

We investigate the effect of surface tension on the linear Rayleigh--Taylor (RT) instability in stratified incompressible viscous fluids with or without (interface) surface tension. The existence of linear RT instability solutions with largest growth rate $Λ$ is proved under the instability condition (i.e., the surface tension coefficient $\vartheta$ is less than a threshold $\vartheta_{\rm c}$) by modified variational method of PDEs. Moreover we find a new upper bound for $Λ$. In particular, we observe from the upper bound that $Λ$ decreasingly converges to zero, as $\vartheta$ goes from zero to the threshold $\vartheta_{\rm c}$. The convergence behavior of $Λ$ mathematically verifies the classical RT instability experiment that the instability growth is limited by surface tension during the linear stage.

Penrose's two-spinor notation for $4$-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds can be extended to two-component notation for quaternionic manifolds, which is a very useful tool for calculation. We construct a family of quaternionic complexes over unimodular quaternionic manifolds by elementary calculation. On complex quaternionic manifolds, which are essentially the complexification of real analytic quaternionic Kähler manifolds, the existence of these complexes was established by Baston by using twistor transformations and spectral sequences. Unimodular quaternionic manifolds constitute a nice and large class of quaternionic manifolds: the conformal change of a unimodular quaternionic structure is still unimodular quaternionic and the complexes over such manifolds are conformally invariant. This class of manifolds, including quaternionic Kähler manifolds, are the real version of torsion-free QCFs introduced by Bailey and Eastwood. We show the ellipticity of these complexes and its Hodge-type decomposition. We also obtain a Weitzenböck formula to establish vanishing of the cohomology groups of these complexes for quaternionic Kähler manifolds with negative scalar curvatures.

The mean first exit (passage) time characterizes the average time of a stochastic process never leaving a fixed region in the state space, while the escape probability describes the likelihood of a transition from one region to another for a stochastic system driven by discontinuous (with jumps) Lévy motion. This paper discusses the two deterministic quantities, mean first exit time and escape probability, for the anomalous processes having the tempered Lévy stable waiting times with the tempering index $λ>0$ and the stability index $0<α\le 1$; as for the distribution of jump lengths or the type of the noises driving the system, two cases are considered, i.e., Gaussian white noise and non-Gaussian (tempered) $β$-stable ($0<β<2$) Lévy noise. Firstly, we derive the nonlocal elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) governing the mean first exit time and escape probability. Based on the derived PDEs, it is observed that the mean first exit time depends strongly on the domain size and the values of $α$, $β$ and $λ$; when $λ$ is close to zero, the mean first exit time tends to $\infty$. In particular, we also find an interesting result that the escape probability of a particle with (tempered) power-law jum** length distribution has no relation with the distribution of waiting times for the model considered in this paper. For the solutions of the derived PDEs, the boundary layer phenomena are observed, which inspires the motivation for develo** the boundary layer theory for nonlocal PDEs.

Locally, the path-ordered integral of $A $ gives us the local $1$-holonomy, and the surface-ordered integral of $(A ,B )$ gives us the local $2$-holonomy. The transformation of local $2$-holonomies from one coordinate chart to another is provided by the transition $2$-arrow, which is constructed from a $2$-gauge transformation. We can use the transition $2$-arrows and the $2$-arrows provided by the $\mathcal{G}$-valued cocycle to glue such local $2$-holonomies together to get a global one, which is well defined. Namely we give an explicit algorithm for calculating the global $2$-holonomy.

In this paper, we investigate the linear controllability framework for complex networks from a physical point of view. There are three main results. (1) If one applies control signals as determined from the structural controllability theory, there is a high probability that the control energy will diverge. Especially, if a network is deemed controllable using a single driving signal, then most likely the energy will diverge. (2) The energy required for control exhibits a power-law scaling behavior. (3) Applying additional control signals at proper nodes in the network can reduce and optimize the energy cost. We identify the fundamental structures embedded in the network, the longest control chains, which determine the control energy and give rise to the power-scaling behavior. (To our knowledge, this was not reported in any previous work on control of complex networks.) In addition, the issue of control precision is addressed. These results are supported by extensive simulations from model and real networks, physical reasoning, and mathematical analyses.
Notes on the submission history of this work: This work started in late 2012. The phenomena of power-law energy scaling and energy divergence with a single controller were discovered in 2013. Strategies to reduce and optimize control energy was articulated and tested in 2013. The senior co-author (YCL) gave talks about these results at several conferences, including the NETSCI 2014 Satellite entitled "Controlling Complex Networks" on June 2, 2014. The paper was submitted to PNAS in September 2014 and was turned down. It was revised and submitted to PRX in early 2015 and was rejected. After that it was revised and submitted to Nature Communications in May 2015 and again was turned down.

We give the $3$-gauge transformations from a $3$-connection to another, and show the transformation formulae of the $1$-curvature $2$-form, the $2$-curvature $3$-form and the $3$-curvature $4$-form. The gauge configurations can be interpreted as smooth $\mathbf{Gray}$-functors between two $\mathbf{Gray}$ $3$-groupoids: the path $3$-groupoid $\mathcal{P}_3(X)$ and the $3$-gauge group $ \mathcal{G}^{\mathscr L}$ associated to the $ 2$-crossed module $\mathscr L$, whose differential is $(\mathfrak g,\mathfrak h, \mathfrak l)$. The derivatives of $\mathbf{Gray}$-functors are $3$-connections, and the derivatives of lax-natural transformations between two such $\mathbf{Gray}$-functors are $3$-gauge transformations. We give the $3$-dimensional holonomy, the lattice version of the $3$-curvature, whose derivative gives the $3$-curvature $4$-form. The covariance of $3$-curvatures easily follows from this construction. This $\mathbf{ Gray}$-categorical construction explains why $3$-gauge transformations and $3$-curvatures have the given forms. The interchanging $3$-arrows are responsible for the appearance of terms concerning the Peiffer commutator $\{,\}$.

We study the approach to equilibrium, described by a Gibbs measure, for a system on a $d$-dimensional torus evolving according to a stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (SNLS) with a high frequency truncation. We prove exponential approach to the truncated Gibbs measure both for the focusing and defocusing cases when the dynamics is constrained via suitable boundary conditions to regions of the Fourier space where the Hamiltonian is convex. Our method is based on establishing a spectral gap for the non self-adjoint Fokker-Planck operator governing the time evolution of the measure, which is {\it uniform} in the frequency truncation $N$. The limit $N\to\infty$ is discussed.

First, the reduced stochastic system on exponentially attracting slow manifold reduced system is derived to errors of $\mathcal{O}(ε)$. Second, averaging derives an autonomous deterministic system up to errors of $\mathcal{O}(\sqrtε)$. Then an intermediate reduced model, which is an autonomous deterministic system driven by white noise up to errors of $\mathcal{O}(ε)$, is derived using a martingale approach to account for fluctuations about the averaged system. The macroscopic behavior of dissipative stochastic partial differential equations usually can be described by a finite dimensional system. This article proves that a macroscopic reduced model may be constructed for stochastic reaction-diffusion equations with cubic nonlinearity by artificial separating the system into two distinct slow-fast time parts. An averaging method and a deviation estimate show that the macroscopic reduced model should be a stochastic ordinary equation which includes the random effect transmitted from the microscopic timescale due to the nonlinear interaction. Numerical simulations of an example stochastic heat equation confirms the predictions of this stochastic modelling theory. This theory empowers us to better model the long time dynamics of complex stochastic systems.
