We consider the smallest eigenvalue distributions of some Freud unitary ensembles, that is, the probabilities that all the eigenvalues of the Hermitian matrices from the ensembles lie in the interval $(t,\infty)$. This problem is related to the Hankel determinants generated by the Freud weights with a jump discontinuity. By using Chen and Ismail's ladder operator approach, we obtain the discrete systems for the recurrence coefficients of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials. This enables us to derive the large $n$ asymptotics of the recurrence coefficients via Dyson's Coulomb fluid approach. We finally obtain the large $n$ asymptotics of the Hankel determinants and that of the probabilities from their relations to the recurrence coefficients and with the aid of some recent results in the literature.

Our particular emphasis lies in addressing the \textit{diabatic} effect, i.e., the impact of Bloch band crossings. We consider both deterministic and random scenarios. In the former case, we derive a coupled Liouville system, revealing lower-order interactions among different Bloch bands. In the latter case, a coupled system of radiative transport equations emerges, with the scattering cross-section induced by the random inhomogeneities. As a specific application, we deduce the effective dynamics of a wave packet in graphene with randomness.

We propose the representation principle to study physical systems with a given symmetry. In the context of symmetry enriched topological orders, we give the appropriate representation category, the category of SET orders. For fusion n-category symmetries, we show that the category of SET orders encodes almost all information about the interplay between symmetry and topological orders, in a natural and canonical way. These information include defects and boundaries of SET orders, symmetry charges, explicit and spontaneous symmetry breaking, stacking of SET orders, gauging of generalized symmetry, as well as quantum currents (SymTFT or symmetry TO). We also provide a detailed categorical algorithm to compute the generalized gauging. In particular, we proved that gauging is always reversible, as a special type of Morita-equivalence. The explicit data for ungauging, the inverse to gauging, is given.

Recently, many studies are focused on generalized global symmetry, a mixture of both invertible and non-invertible symmetries in various space-time dimensions. The complete structure of generalized global symmetry is described by higher fusion category theory. In this paper, We first review the construction of fusion 2-category symmetry $Σ\cal B$ where $\cal B$ is a a braided fusion category. In particular, we elaborate on the monoidal structure of $Σ\cal B$ which determines fusion rules and controls the dynamics of topological operators/defects. We then take $Σ\mathrm{sVec}$ as an example to demonstrate how we calculate fusion rule, quantum dimension and 10j-symbol of the fusion 2-category. With our algorithm, all these data can be efficiently encoded and computed in computer program. The complete program will be uploaded to github soon. Our work can be thought as explicitly computing the representation theory of $\cal B$, in analogy to, for example the representation theory of $SU(2)$. The choice of basis bimodule maps are in analogy to the Clebsch-Gordon coefficients and the 10j-symbol are in analogy to the 6j-symbol.

We develop novel neural network-based implicit particle methods to compute high-dimensional Wasserstein-type gradient flows with linear and nonlinear mobility functions. The main idea is to use the Lagrangian formulation in the Jordan--Kinderlehrer--Otto (JKO) framework, where the velocity field is approximated using a neural network. We leverage the formulations from the neural ordinary differential equation (neural ODE) in the context of continuous normalizing flow for efficient density computation. Additionally, we make use of an explicit recurrence relation for computing derivatives, which greatly streamlines the backpropagation process. Our methodology demonstrates versatility in handling a wide range of gradient flows, accommodating various potential functions and nonlinear mobility scenarios. Extensive experiments demonstrate the efficacy of our approach, including an illustrative example from Bayesian inverse problems. This underscores that our scheme provides a viable alternative solver for the Kalman-Wasserstein gradient flow.

We consider the initial value problem for a new two-component Sasa-Satsuma equation associated with the fourth-order Lax pair with decaying initial data on the line. By utilizing the spectral analysis, the solution of the new two-component Sasa-Satsuma system is transformed into the solution of a fourth-order matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem. Then the long-time asymptotics of the solution is obtained by means of the nonlinear steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou for oscillatory Riemann-Hilbert problems. We show that there are three main regions in the half-plane, where the asymptotics has qualitatively different forms: a left fast decaying sector, a central Painleve sector where the asymptotics is described in terms of the solution of a new coupled Painleve II equation which is related to a fourth-order matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem, and a right slowly decaying oscillatory sector.

In this paper, we develop a multiscale hierarchy framework for objective molecular dynamics (OMD), a reduced order molecular dynamics with a certain symmetry, that connects it to the statistical kinetic equation, and the macroscopic hydrodynamic model. In the mesoscopic regime, we exploit two interaction scalings that lead, respectively, to either a mean-field type or to a Boltzmann type equation. It turns out that, under the special symmetry of OMD, the mean-field scaling results in vastly simplified dynamics that extinguishes the underlying molecular interaction rule, whereas the Boltzmann scaling yields a meaningful reduced model called the homo-energetic Boltzmann equation. At the macroscopic level, we derive the corresponding Euler and Navier-Stokes systems by conducting a detailed asymptotic analysis. The symmetry again significantly reduces the complexity of the resulting hydrodynamic systems.

The Wigner rotation matrix ($d$-function), which appears as a part of the angular-momentum-projection operator, plays a crucial role in modern nuclear-structure models. However, it is a long-standing problem that its numerical evaluation suffers from serious errors and instability, which hinders precise calculations for nuclear high-spin states. Recently, Tajima [Phys. Rev. C 91, 014320 (2015)] has made a significant step toward solving the problem by suggesting the high-precision Fourier method, which however relies on formula-manipulation softwares. In this paper we propose an effective and efficient algorithm for the Wigner $d$ function based on the Jacobi polynomials. We compare our method with the conventional Wigner method and the Tajima Fourier method through some testing calculations, and demonstrate that our algorithm can always give stable results with similar high-precision as the Fourier method, and in some cases (for special sets of $j, m, k$ and $θ$) ours are even more accurate. Moreover, our method is self-contained and less memory consuming. A related testing code and subroutines are provided as Supplemental Material in the present paper.

We are concerned with the inverse boundary problem of determining anomalies associated with a semilinear elliptic equation of the form $-Δu+a(\mathbf x, u)=0$, where $a(\mathbf x, u)$ is a general nonlinear term that belongs to a Hölder class. It is assumed that the inhomogeneity of $f(\mathbf x, u)$ is contained in a bounded domain $D$ in the sense that outside $D$, $a(\mathbf x, u)=λu$ with $λ\in\mathbb{C}$. We establish novel unique identifiability results in several general scenarios of practical interest. These include determining the support of the inclusion (i.e. $D$) independent of its content (i.e. $a(\mathbf{x}, u)$ in $D$) by a single boundary measurement; and determining both $D$ and $a(\mathbf{x}, u)|_D$ by $M$ boundary measurements, where $M\in\mathbb{N}$ signifies the number of unknown coefficients in $a(\mathbf x, u)$. The mathematical argument is based on microlocally characterising the singularities in the solution $u$ induced by the geometric singularities of $D$, and does not rely on any linearisation technique.

The present article proposes a diffuse interface model for compressible multicomponent flows with transport phenomena of mass, momentum and energy (i.e., mass diffusion, viscous dissipation and heat conduction). The model is reduced from the seven-equation Baer-Nuziato type model with asymptotic analysis in the limit of instantaneous mechanical relaxations. The main difference between the present model and the Kapila's five-equation model consists in that different time scales for pressure and velocity relaxations are assumed, the former being much smaller than the latter. Thanks to this assumption, the velocity disequilibrium is retained to model the mass diffusion process. Aided by the diffusion laws, the final model still formally consists of five equations. The proposed model satisfy two desirable properties : (1) it respects the laws of thermodynamics, (2) it is free of the spurious oscillation problem in the vicinity of the diffused interface zone. The mass diffusion, viscous dissipation and heat conduction processes contribute parabolic partial differential equations that are solved with the Chebyshev method of local iterations. Numerical results show that the proposed model maintains pressure, velocity and temperature equilibrium near the diffused interface. Convergence tests demonstrate that the numerical methods achieve second order in space and time. The proposed model and numerical methods are applied to simulate the laser-driven RM instability problem in inertial confinement fusion, good agreement with experimental results are observed.

Reconstructing hadron spectral functions through Euclidean correlation functions are of the important missions in lattice QCD calculations. However, in a Källen--Lehmann(KL) spectral representation, the reconstruction is observed to be ill-posed in practice. It is usually ascribed to the fewer observation points compared to the number of points in the spectral function. In this paper, by solving the eigenvalue problem of continuous KL convolution, we show analytically that the ill-posedness of the inversion is fundamental and it exists even for continuous correlation functions. We discussed how to introduce regulators to alleviate the predicament, in which include the Artificial Neural Networks(ANNs) representations recently proposed by the Authors in~[Phys. Rev. D 106 (2022) L051502]. The uniqueness of solutions using ANNs representations is manifested analytically and validated numerically. Reconstructed spectral functions using different regularization schemes are also demonstrated, together with their eigen-mode decomposition. We observe that components with large eigenvalues can be reliably reconstructed by all methods, whereas those with low eigenvalues need to be constrained by regulators.

This paper studies the infinite-dimensional Bayesian inference method with Hadamard fractional total variation-Gaussian (HFTG) prior for solving inverse problems. First, Hadamard fractional Sobolev space is established and proved to be a separable Banach space under some mild conditions. Afterwards, the HFTG prior is constructed in this separable fractional space, and the proposed novel hybrid prior not only captures the texture details of the region and avoids step effects, but also provides a complete theoretical analysis in the infinite dimensional Bayesian inversion. Based on the HFTG prior, the well-posedness and finite-dimensional approximation of the posterior measure of the Bayesian inverse problem are given, and samples are extracted from the posterior distribution using the standard pCN algorithm. Finally, numerical results under different models indicate that the Bayesian inference method with HFTG prior is effective and accurate.

In the present paper we propose a reduced temperature non-equilibrium model for simulating multicomponent flows with inter-phase heat transfer, diffusion processes (including the viscosity and the heat conduction) and external energy sources. We derive three equivalent formulations for the proposed model. All the three formulations assume velocity and pressure equilibrium across the material interface. These equivalent forms provide different physical perspectives and numerical conveniences. Temperature equilibration and continuity across the material interfaces are achieved with the instantaneous thermal relaxation. Temperature equilibrium is maintained during the heat conduction process. The proposed models are proved to respect the thermodynamical laws. For numerical solution, the model is split into a hyperbolic partial differential equation (PDE) system and parabolic PDE systems. The former is solved with the high-order Godunov finite volume method that ensures the pressure-velocity-temperature (PVT) equilibrium conduction. The parabolic PDEs are solved with both the implicit and the explicit locally iterative method (LIM) based on Chebyshev parameters. Numerical results are presented for several multicomponent flow problems with diffusion processes. Furthermore, we apply the proposed model to simulate the target ablation problem that is of significance to inertial confinement fusion. Comparisons with one-temperature models in literature demonstrate the ability to maintain the PVT property and superior convergence performance of the proposed model in solving multicomponent problems with diffusions.

In this paper, we present analytic formulas of the temporal convolution kernel functions involved in the time-domain non-reflecting boundary condition (NRBC) for the electromagnetic scattering problems. Such exact formulas themselves lead to accurate and efficient algorithms for computing the NRBC for domain reduction of the time-domain Maxwell's system in $\mathbb R^3$. A second purpose of this paper is to derive a new time-domain model for the electromagnetic invisibility cloak. Different from the existing models, it contains only one unknown field and the seemingly complicated convolutions can be computed as efficiently as the temporal convolutions in the NRBC. The governing equation in the cloaking layer is valid for general geometry, e.g., a spherical or polygonal layer. Here, we aim at simulating the spherical invisibility cloak. We take the advantage of radially stratified dispersive media and special geometry, and develop an efficient vector spherical harmonic (VSH)-spectral-element method for its accurate simulation. Compared with limited results on FDTD simulation, the proposed method is optimal in both accuracy and computational cost. Indeed, the saving in computational time is significant.

The $S=1$ Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) quantum spin chain was the first rigorous example of an isotropic spin system in the Haldane phase. The conjecture that the $S=3/2$ AKLT model on the hexagonal lattice is also in a gapped phase has remained open, despite being a fundamental problem of ongoing relevance to condensed-matter physics and quantum information theory. Here we confirm this conjecture by demonstrating the size-independent lower bound $Δ>0.006$ on the spectral gap of the hexagonal model with periodic boundary conditions in the thermodynamic limit. Our approach consists of two steps combining mathematical physics and high-precision computational physics. We first prove a mathematical finite-size criterion which gives an analytical, size-independent bound on the spectral gap if the gap of a particular cut-out subsystem of 36 spins exceeds a certain threshold value. Then we verify the finite-size criterion numerically by performing state-of-the-art DMRG calculations on the subsystem.

We show that the spectral norm of a $d$-mode real or complex symmetric tensor in $n$ variables can be computed by finding the fixed points of the corresponding polynomial map. For a generic complex symmetric tensor the number of fixed points is finite, and we give upper and lower bounds for the number of fixed points. For $n=2$ we show that these fixed points are the roots of a corresponding univariate polynomial of degree at most $(d-1)^2+1$, except certain cases, which are completely analyzed. In particular, for $n=2$ the spectral norm of $d$-symmetric tensor is polynomially computable in $d$ with a given relative precision. For a fixed $n>2$ we show that the spectral norm of a $d$-mode symmetric tensor is polynomially computable in $d$ with a given relative precision with respect to the Hilbert-Schmidt norm of the tensor. These results show that the geometric measure of entanglement of $d$-mode symmetric qunits on $\mathbb{C}^n$ are polynomially computable for a fixed $n$.

Abstract:
Let $f(x)=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{1}{n!}q^{n(n-1)/2}x^n$ ($0<q<1$) be the deformed exponential function. It is known that the zeros of $f(x)$ are real and form a negative decreasing sequence $(x_k)$ ($k\ge 1$). We investigate the complete asymptotic expansion for $x_{k}$ and prove that for any $n\ge1$, as $k\to \infty$, \begin{align*} x_k=-kq^{1-k}\Big(1+\sum_{i=1}^{n}C_i(q)k^{-1-i}+o(k^{-1-n})\B…

We show that each $C_{i}(q)\in \mathbb{Q}[A_0,A_1,A_2]$, where $A_{i}=\sum_{m=1}^{\infty}m^iσ(m)q^m$ and $σ(m)$ denotes the sum of positive divisors of $m$. When writing $C_{i}$ as a polynomial in $A_0, A_1$ and $A_2$, we find explicit formulas for the coefficients of the linear terms by using Bernoulli numbers. Moreover, we also prove that $C_{i}(q)\in \mathbb{Q}[E_2,E_4,E_6]$, where $E_2$, $E_4$ and $E_6$ are the classical Eisenstein series of weight 2, 4 and 6, respectively.

In this paper, we consider the real modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation and construct a special kind of breather solution, which can be obtained by taking the limit $λ_{j}$ $\rightarrow$ $λ_{1}$ of the Lax pair eigenvalues used in the $n$-fold Darboux transformation that generates the order-$n$ periodic solution from a constant seed solution. Further, this special kind of breather solution of order $n$ can be used to generate the order-$n$ rational solution by taking the limit $λ_{1}$ $\rightarrow$ $λ_{0}$, where $λ_{0}$ is a special eigenvalue associated to the eigenfunction $φ$ of the Lax pair of the mKdV equation. This eigenvalue $λ_0$, for which $φ(λ_0)=0$, corresponds to the limit of infinite period of the periodic solution. %This second limit of double eigenvalue degeneration might be realized approximately in optical fibers, in which an injected %initial ideal pulse is created by a comb system and a programmable optical filter according to the profile of the analytical %form of the b-positon at a certain spatial position $x_{0}$. Therefore, we suggest a new way to observe the higher-order %rational solutions in optical fibers, namely, to measure the wave patterns at the central region of the higher order b-positon %generated by ideal initial pulses when the eigenvalue $λ_{1}$ is approaching $λ_{0}$. Our analytical and numerical results show the effective mechanism of generation of higher-order rational solutions of the mKdV equation from the double eigenvalue degeneration process of multi-periodic solutions.

We show that, this new scheme is unconditionally stable as long as the initial condition does not exceed certain threshold, and it asymptotically preserves the quasi-static limit in the transient regime. Furthermore, we prove that the fully discrete scheme is conservative and positivity preserving, which makes it ideal for simulations. The analogical schemes for the radial symmetric cases and the subcritical degenerate cases are also presented and analyzed. With extensive numerical tests, we verify the claimed properties of the methods and demonstrate their superiority in various challenging applications.

In this paper, we investigate numerically the stochastic ABC model, a toy model in the theory of astrophysical kinematic dynamos, within the recently proposed supersymmetric theory of stochastics (STS). STS characterises stochastic differential equations (SDEs) by the spectrum of the stochastic evolution operator (SEO) on elements of the exterior algebra or differentials forms over the system's phase space, X. STS can thereby classify SDEs as chaotic or non-chaotic by identifying the phenomenon of stochastic chaos with the spontaneously broken topological supersymmetry that all SDEs possess. We demonstrate the following three properties of the SEO, deduced previously analytically and from physical arguments: the SEO spectra for zeroth and top degree forms never break topological supersymmetry, all SDEs possesses pseudo-time-reversal symmetry, and each de Rahm cohomology class provides one supersymmetric eigenstate. Our results also suggests that the SEO spectra for forms of complementary degrees, i.e., k and dim X -k, may be isospectral.

We study the AB system describing marginally unstable baroclinic wave packets in geophysical fluids and also ultra-short pulses in nonlinear optics. We show that the breather can be converted into different types of stationary nonlinear waves on constant backgrounds, including the multi-peak soliton, M-shaped soliton, W-shaped soliton and periodic wave. We also investigate the nonlinear interactions between these waves, which display some novel patterns due to the non-propagating characteristics of the solitons: (1) Two antidark solitons can produce a W-shaped soliton instead of a higher-order antidark one, (2) The interaction between an antidark soliton and a W-shaped soliton can not only generate a higher-order antidark soliton, but also form a W-shaped solion pair, (3) The interactions between an oscillation W-shaped soliton and an oscillation M-shaped soliton show the multipeak structures. We find that the transition occurs at a modulational stability region in a low perturbation frequency region.

In this paper, we investigate the linear controllability framework for complex networks from a physical point of view. There are three main results. (1) If one applies control signals as determined from the structural controllability theory, there is a high probability that the control energy will diverge. Especially, if a network is deemed controllable using a single driving signal, then most likely the energy will diverge. (2) The energy required for control exhibits a power-law scaling behavior. (3) Applying additional control signals at proper nodes in the network can reduce and optimize the energy cost. We identify the fundamental structures embedded in the network, the longest control chains, which determine the control energy and give rise to the power-scaling behavior. (To our knowledge, this was not reported in any previous work on control of complex networks.) In addition, the issue of control precision is addressed. These results are supported by extensive simulations from model and real networks, physical reasoning, and mathematical analyses.
Notes on the submission history of this work: This work started in late 2012. The phenomena of power-law energy scaling and energy divergence with a single controller were discovered in 2013. Strategies to reduce and optimize control energy was articulated and tested in 2013. The senior co-author (YCL) gave talks about these results at several conferences, including the NETSCI 2014 Satellite entitled "Controlling Complex Networks" on June 2, 2014. The paper was submitted to PNAS in September 2014 and was turned down. It was revised and submitted to PRX in early 2015 and was rejected. After that it was revised and submitted to Nature Communications in May 2015 and again was turned down.

In this paper, we consider the complex modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation as a model of few-cycle optical pulses. Using the Lax pair, we construct a generalized Darboux transformation and systematically generate the first-, second- and third-order rogue wave solutions and analyze the nature of evolution of higher-order rogue waves in detail. Based on detailed numerical and analytical investigations, we classify the higher-order rogue waves with respect to their intrinsic structure, namely, fundamental pattern, triangular pattern, and ring pattern. We also present several new patterns of the rogue wave according to the standard and non-standard decomposition. The results of this paper explain the generalization of higher-order rogue waves in terms of rational solutions. We apply the contour line method to obtain the analytical formulas of the length and width of the first-order RW of the complex mKdV and the NLS equations. In nonlinear optics, the higher-order rogue wave solutions found here will be very useful to generate high-power few-cycle optical pulses which will be applicable in the area of ultra-short pulse technology.

The concept of deterministic dynamical chaos has a long history and is well established by now. Nevertheless, its field theoretic essence and its stochastic generalization have been revealed only very recently. Within the newly found supersymmetric theory of stochastics (STS), all stochastic differential equations (SDEs) possess topological or de Rahm supersymmetry and stochastic chaos is the phenomenon of its spontaneous breakdown. Even though the STS is free of approximations and thus is technically solid, it is still missing a firm interpretational basis in order to be physically sound. Here, we make a few important steps toward the construction of the interpretational foundation for the STS. In particular, we discuss that one way to understand why the ground states of chaotic SDEs are conditional (not total) probability distributions, is that some of the variables have infinite memory of initial conditions and thus are not "thermalized", i.e., cannot be described by the initial-conditions-independent probability distributions. As a result, the definitive assumption of physical statistics that the ground state is a steady-state total probability distribution is not valid for chaotic SDEs.

The same nonlinear evolution equation can also describes the soliton-type nonlinear excitations in classical Heisenberg spin chain. Such solutions have a parameter $γ_1$, denoting the strength of the higher-order effects. From the numerical plots of the rational solutions, the compression effects of the breather and rogue waves produced by $γ_1$ are discussed in detail.

By adjusting the relative phase of the breathers at the interacting area, it is possible to obtain different types of HRWs. The value $λ_0$ is a zero point of the eigenfunction of the Lax pair of the NLS equation and it corresponds to the limit of the period of the breather tending to infinity. By employing this mechanism we prove two conjectures regarding the total number of peaks, as well as a decomposition rule in the circular pattern of an order $n$ HRW.
