We compute the genus $0$ free energy for the $2$-matrix model with quartic interactions, which acts as a generating function for the Ising model's partition function on a random, $4$-regular, planar graph. This rigorously confirms the predictions of V.A. Kazakov and D.V. Boulatov on this model, and provides a new parametric formula for the free energy. We also give a characterization of the phase space of the model. Our analysis is based on a steepest descent Riemann-Hilbert analysis of the associated biorthogonal polynomials and the corresponding isomonodromic $τ$-function. A key ingredient in the analysis is a parametrization of the spectral curve.

We develop an algebraic approach to the branching of representations of the general linear Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}_{p|q}({\mathbb C})$, by constructing certain super commutative algebras whose structure encodes the branching rules. Using this approach, we derive the branching rules for restricting any irreducible polynomial representation $V$ of $\mathfrak{gl}_{p|q}({\mathbb C})$ to a regular subalgebra isomorphic to $\mathfrak{gl}_{r|s}({\mathbb C})\oplus \mathfrak{gl}_{r'|s'}({\mathbb C})$, $\mathfrak{gl}_{r|s}({\mathbb C})\oplus\mathfrak{gl}_1({\mathbb C})^{r'+s'}$ or $\mathfrak{gl}_{r|s}({\mathbb C})$, with $r+r'=p$ and $s+s'=q$. In the case of $\mathfrak{gl}_{r|s}({\mathbb C})\oplus\mathfrak{gl}_1({\mathbb C})^{r'+s'}$ with $s=0$ or $s=1$ but general $r$, we also construct a basis for the space of $\mathfrak{gl}_{r|s}({\mathbb C})$ highest weight vectors in $V$; when $r=s=0$, the branching rule leads to explicit expressions for the weight multiplicities of $V$ in terms of Kostka numbers.

Employing a poloidal-toroidal projection technique, a multi-scale analysis of resonant wave triads in columnar vortices is performed to obtain the governing equations of the triadically coupled wave amplitudes. For inviscid flows, we establish that resonance between neutral, smooth waves is conservative, and the temporal evolution of wave amplitudes is either bounded or explosively unstable based on the signs of the triad's interaction coefficients. Assessing the onset of weakly nonlinear instabilities through the pseudoenergy criterion introduced by Cairns (1979, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 92), we use the large-axial-wavenumber asymptotic approach by Le Dizes and Lacaze (2005, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 542) to evaluate each triad member's pseudoenergy and argue against the possibility of explosive conservative three-wave resonance involving only regular Kelvin waves. Additionally, extending our investigation to specific vortices, such as the Lamb-Oseen vortex and the Batchelor vortex, we find that triadic resonance among their neutral modes consistently results in bounded behaviour.

In a system of heterogeneous (Abelian) Kuramoto oscillators with random or `frustrated' interactions, transitions from states of incoherence to partial synchronization were observed. These so-called volcano transitions are characterized by a change in the shape of a local field distribution and were discussed in connection with an oscillator glass. In this paper, we consider a different class of oscillators, namely a system of (non-Abelian) SU(2)-Lohe oscillators that can also be defined on the 3-sphere, i.e., an oscillator is generalized to be defined as a unit vector in 4D Euclidean space. We demonstrate that such higher-dimensional Kuramoto models with reciprocal and nonreciprocal random interactions represented by a low-rank matrix exhibit a volcano transition as well. We determine the critical coupling strength at which a volcano-like transition occurs, employing an Ott-Antonsen ansatz. Numerical simulations provide additional validations of our analytical findings and reveal the differences in observable collective dynamics prior to and following the transition. Furthermore, we show that a system of unit 3-vector oscillators on the 2-sphere does not possess a volcano transition.

Chimera dynamics is characterized by the coexistence of coherence and incoherence, arising from a symmetry-breaking mechanism. Extensive research has been performed in various systems, focusing on a system of Kuramoto-Sakaguchi (KS) phase oscillators. In recent developments, the system has been extended to the so-called generalized Kuramoto model, wherein an oscillator is situated on the surface of an M-dimensional unit sphere, rather than being confined to a unit circle. In this paper, we exploit the model introduced in New. J. Phys. 16, 023016 (2014) where the macroscopic dynamics of the system was studied using the extended Watanabe-Strogatz transformation both for real and complex spaces. Considering two-population networks of the generalized KS oscillators in 2D complex spaces, we demonstrate the existence of chimera states and elucidate different motions of the order parameter vectors depending on the strength of intra-population coupling. Similar to the KS model on the unit circle, stationary and breathing chimeras are observed for comparatively strong intra-population coupling. Here, the breathing chimera changes their motion upon decreasing intra-population coupling strength via a global bifurcation involving the completely incoherent state. Beyond that, the system exhibits periodic alternation of the two order parameters with weaker coupling strength. Moreover, we observe that the chimera state transitions into a componentwise aperiodic dynamics when the coupling strength weakens even further. The aperiodic chimera dynamics emerges due to the breaking of conserved quantities that are preserved in the stationary, breathing and alternating chimera states. We provide a detailed explanation of this scenario in both the thermodynamic limit and for finite-sized ensembles. Furthermore, we note that an ensemble in 4D real spaces demonstrates similar behavior.

We study the normal matrix model, also known as the two-dimensional one-component plasma at a specific temperature, with merging singularity. As the number $n$ of particles tends to infinity we obtain the limiting local correlation kernel at the singularity, which is related to the parametrix of the Painlevé~II equation. The two main tools are Riemann-Hilbert problems and the generalized Christoffel-Darboux identity. The correlation kernel exhibits a novel anisotropic scaling behavior, where the corresponding spacing scale of particles is $n^{-1/3}$ in the direction of merging and $n^{-1/2}$ in the perpendicular direction. In the vicinity at different distances to the merging singularity we also observe Ginibre bulk and edge statistics, as well as the sine-kernel and the universality class corresponding to the elliptic ensemble in the weak non-Hermiticity regime for the local correlation function.

In this paper, we prove an analogous result in the setting of meromorphic Hitchin systems of type A which are known to be Poisson integrable systems. We consider a symplectization of the meromorphic Hitchin integrable system, which is a semi-polarized integrable system in the sense of Kontsevich and Soibelman. On the Hitchin side, we show that the moduli space of unordered diagonally framed Higgs bundles forms an integrable system in this sense and recovers the meromorphic Hitchin system as the fiberwise compact quotient. Then we construct a new family of quasi-projective Calabi-Yau threefolds and show that its relative intermediate Jacobian fibration, as semi-polarized integrable systems, is isomorphic to the moduli space of unordered diagonally framed Higgs bundles.

A version of mirror symmetry predicts a ring isomorphism between quantum cohomology of a symplectic manifold and Jacobian algebra of the Landau-Ginzburg mirror, and for toric manifolds Fukaya-Oh-Ohta-Ono constructed such a map called Kodaira-Spencer map using Lagrangian Floer theory. We discuss a general construction of Kodaira-Spencer ring homomorphism when LG mirror potential $W$ is given by $J$-holomorphic discs with boundary on a Lagrangian $L$: we find an $A_{\infty}$-algebra $\mathcal{B}$ whose $m_1$-complex is a Koszul complex for $W$ under mild assumptions on $L$. Closed-open map gives a ring homomorphism from quantum cohomology to cohomology algebra of $\mathcal{B}$ which is Jacobian algebra of $W$.
We also construct an equivariant version for orbifold LG mirror $(W,H)$. We construct a Kodaira-Spencer map from quantum cohomology to another $A_{\infty}$-algebra $(\mathcal{B}\rtimes H)^H$ whose cohomology algebra is isomorphic to the orbifold Jacobian algebra of $(W,H)$ under an assumption. For the $2$-torus whose mirror is an orbifold LG model given by Fermat cubic with a $\mathbb{Z}/3$-action, we compute an explicit Kodaira-Spencer isomorphism.

Given a sequence of lattice approximations $D_N\subset\mathbb Z^2$ of a bounded continuum domain $D\subset\mathbb R^2$ with the vertices outside $D_N$ fused together into one boundary vertex $\varrho$, we consider discrete-time simple random walks in $D_N\cup\{\varrho\}$ run for a time proportional to the expected cover time and describe the scaling limit of the exceptional level sets of the thick, thin, light and avoided points. We show that these are distributed, up a spatially-dependent log-normal factor, as the zero-average Liouville Quantum Gravity measures in $D$. The limit law of the local time configuration at, and nearby, the exceptional points is determined as well. The results extend earlier work by the first two authors who analyzed the continuous-time problem in the parametrization by the local time at $\varrho$. A novel uniqueness result concerning divisible random measures and, in particular, Gaussian Multiplicative Chaos, is derived as part of the proofs.

Brane brick models are Type IIA brane configurations that encode the $2d$ $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ gauge theories on the worldvolume of D1-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. We use mirror symmetry to improve our understanding of this correspondence and to provide a systematic approach for constructing brane brick models starting from geometry. The mirror configuration consists of D5-branes wrap** 4-spheres and the gauge theory is determined by how they intersect. We also explain how $2d$ $(0,2)$ triality is realized in terms of geometric transitions in the mirror geometry. Mirror symmetry leads to a geometric unification of dualities in different dimensions, where the order of duality is $n-1$ for a Calabi-Yau $n$-fold. This makes us conjecture the existence of a quadrality symmetry in $0d$. Finally, we comment on how the M-theory lift of brane brick models connects to the classification of $2d$ $(0,2)$ theories in terms of 4-manifolds.

We consider the random normal matrices with quadratic external potentials where the associated orthogonal polynomials are Hermite polynomials and the limiting support (called droplet) of the eigenvalues is an ellipse. We calculate the density of the eigenvalues near the boundary of the droplet up to the second subleading corrections and express the subleading corrections in terms of the curvature of the droplet boundary. From this result we additionally get the expected number of eigenvalues outside the droplet. We also obtain the asymptotics of the kernel and found that, in the bulk, the correction term is exponentially small. This leads to the vanishing of certain Cauchy transform of the orthogonal polynomial in the bulk of the droplet up to an exponentially small error.

Update: A time-independent $n\times n$ PT-symmetric (and symmetric) Hamiltonian is diagonalizable since it has all distinct real eigenvalues and the resulting diagonal matrix is a real symmetric matrix. The diagonalization results an isometry so there shouldn't be any issue with unitarity and unfortunately this very elementary mathematical fact somehow did not draw the authors' attention. However, PT-symmetric quantum mechanics is not out of trouble. For time-dependent PT-symmetric (and symmetric) Hamiltonians (even $2\times 2$ ones) the authors observed that there is a violation of unitarity. Moreover, the first named author showed in his recent article arXiv:1312.7738 that PT-symmetric quantum mechanics is indeed a certain kind of Hermitian quantum mechanics and that in order for time-evolution to be unitary with respect to $J$-inner product (one that gives rise to a Hilbert space structure on the space of state functions), the potential energy operator $V(x)$ must be real. This means that those complex PT-symmetric Hamiltonians that have been studied by physicists are unfortunately unphysical. The first named author discussed in a subsequent article arXiv:1401.5149 that while finite-state PT-symmetric quantum mechanics with time-independent Hamiltonians is not physically any different from Hermitian quantum mechanics, PT-symmetric quantum mechanics exhibits a distinctive symmetry from that of Hermitian quantum mechanics.

We propose a quantum algorithm to obtain the lowest eigenstate of any Hamiltonian simulated by a quantum computer. The proposed algorithm begins with an arbitrary initial state of the simulated system. A finite series of transforms is iteratively applied to the initial state assisted with an ancillary qubit. The fraction of the lowest eigenstate in the initial state is then amplified up to $\simeq 1$. We prove that our algorithm can faithfully work for any arbitrary Hamiltonian in the theoretical analysis. Numerical analyses are also carried out. We firstly provide a numerical proof-of-principle demonstration with a simple Hamiltonian in order to compare our scheme with the so-called "Demon-like algorithmic cooling (DLAC)", recently proposed in [Nature Photonics 8, 113 (2014)]. The result shows a good agreement with our theoretical analysis, exhibiting the comparable behavior to the best "cooling" with the DLAC method. We then consider a random Hamiltonian model for further analysis of our algorithm. By numerical simulations, we show that the total number $n_c$ of iterations is proportional to $\simeq {\cal O}(D^{-1}ε^{-0.19})$, where $D$ is the difference between the two lowest eigenvalues, and $ε$ is an error defined as the probability that the finally obtained system state is in an unexpected (i.e. not the lowest) eigenstate.

Emergent gravity is based on the Darboux theorem or the Moser lemma in symplectic geometry stating that the electromagnetic force can always be eliminated by a local coordinate transformation as far as U(1) gauge theory is defined on a spacetime with symplectic structure. In this approach, the spacetime geometry is defined by U(1) gauge fields on noncommutative (NC) spacetime. Accordingly the topology of spacetime is determined by the topology of NC U(1) gauge fields. We show that the topology change of spacetime is ample in emergent gravity and the subsequent resolution of spacetime singularity is possible in NC spacetime. Therefore the emergent gravity approach provides a well-defined mechanism for the topology change of spacetime which does not suffer any spacetime singularity in sharp contrast to general relativity.

We consider the orthogonal polynomials $\{P_{n}(z)\}$ with respect to the measure $|z-a|^{2N c} {\rm e}^{-N |z|^2} \,{\rm d} A(z)$ over the whole complex plane. We obtain the strong asymptotic of the orthogonal polynomials in the complex plane and the location of their zeros in a scaling limit where $n$ grows to infinity with $N$.
The asymptotics are described in terms of three (probability) measures associated with the problem. The first measure is the limit of the counting measure of zeros of the polynomials, which is captured by the $g$-function much in the spirit of ordinary orthogonal polynomials on the real line. The second measure is the equilibrium measure that minimizes a certain logarithmic potential energy, supported on a region $K$ of the complex plane. The third measure is the harmonic measure of $K^c$ with a pole at $\infty$. This appears as the limit of the probability measure given (up to the normalization constant) by the squared modulus of the $n$-th orthogonal polynomial times the orthogonality measure, i.e. $|P_n(z)|^2 |z-a|^{2N c} {\rm e}^{-N |z|^2} \,{\rm d} A(z)$.
The compact region $K$ that is the support of the second measure undergoes a topological transition under the variation of the parameter $t=n/N$; in a double scaling limit near the critical point given by $t_c=a(a+2\sqrt c)$ we observe the Hastings-McLeod solution to Painlevé\ II in the asymptotics of the orthogonal polynomials.

We prove a duality, recently conjectured in arXiv:1103.5726, which relates the F-terms of supersymmetric gauge theories defined in two and four dimensions respectively. The proof proceeds by a saddle point analysis of the four-dimensional partition function in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit. At special quantized values of the Coulomb branch moduli, the saddle point condition becomes the Bethe Ansatz Equation of the SL(2) Heisenberg spin chain which coincides with the F-term equation of the dual two-dimensional theory. The on-shell values of the superpotential in the two theories are shown to coincide in corresponding vacua. We also identify two-dimensional duals for a large set of quiver gauge theories in four dimensions and generalize our proof to these cases.

We present a new duality between the F-terms of supersymmetric field theories defined in two- and four-dimensions respectively. The duality relates N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions, deformed by an Omega-background in one plane, to N=(2,2) gauged linear sigma-models in two dimensions. On the four dimensional side, our main example is N=2 SQCD with gauge group SU(L) and 2L fundamental flavours. Using ideas of Nekrasov and Shatashvili, we argue that the Coulomb branch of this theory provides a quantization of the classical Heisenberg SL(2) spin chain. Agreement with the standard quantization via the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz implies the existence of an isomorphism between the chiral ring of the 4d theory and that of a certain two-dimensional theory. The latter can be understood as the worldvolume theory on a surface operator/vortex string probing the Higgs branch of the same 4d theory. We check the proposed duality by explicit calculation at low orders in the instanton expansion. One striking consequence is that the Seiberg-Witten solution of the 4d theory is captured by a one-loop computation in two dimensions. The duality also has interesting connections with the AGT conjecture, matrix models and topological string theory where it corresponds to a refined version of the geometric transition.

We consider the case when the $n\times n$ external source matrix has two distinct real eigenvalues: $a$ with multiplicity $r$ and zero with multiplicity $n-r$. For a Gaussian potential, it was shown by Péché \cite{Peche:2006} that when $r$ is fixed or grows sufficiently slowly with $n$ (a small-rank source), $r$ eigenvalues are expected to exit the main bulk for $|a|$ large enough. Furthermore, at the critical value of $a$ when the outliers are at the edge of a band, the eigenvalues at the edge are described by the $r$-Airy kernel. We establish the universality of the $r$-Airy kernel for a general class of analytic potentials for $r=\mathcal{O}(n^γ)$ for $0\leqγ<1/12$.

Random Hermitian matrices with a source term arise, for instance, in the study of non-intersecting Brownian walkers \cite{Adler:2009a, Daems:2007} and sample covariance matrices \cite{Baik:2005}.
We consider the case when the $n\times n$ external source matrix has two distinct real eigenvalues: $a$ with multiplicity $r$ and zero with multiplicity $n-r$. The source is small in the sense that $r$ is finite or $r=\mathcal O(n^γ)$, for $0< γ<1$. For a Gaussian potential, Péché \cite{Peche:2006} showed that for $|a|$ sufficiently small (the subcritical regime) the external source has no leading-order effect on the eigenvalues, while for $|a|$ sufficiently large (the supercritical regime) $r$ eigenvalues exit the bulk of the spectrum and behave as the eigenvalues of $r\times r$ Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE). We establish the universality of these results for a general class of analytic potentials in the supercritical and subcritical regimes.

We consider the unitary matrix model in the limit where the size of the matrices become infinite and in the critical situation when a new spectral band is about to emerge. In previous works the number of expected eigenvalues in a neighborhood of the band was fixed and finite, a situation that was termed "birth of a cut" or "first colonization". We now consider the transitional regime where this microscopic population in the new band grows without bounds but at a slower rate than the size of the matrix. The local population in the new band organizes in a "mesoscopic" regime, in between the macroscopic behavior of the full system and the previously studied microscopic one. The mesoscopic colony may form a finite number of new bands, with a maximum number dictated by the degree of criticality of the original potential. We describe the delicate scaling limit that realizes/controls the mesoscopic colony. The method we use is the steepest descent analysis of the Riemann-Hilbert problem that is satisfied by the associated orthogonal polynomials.

We describe the distribution of the first finite number of eigenvalues in a newly-forming band of the spectrum of the random Hermitean matrix model. The method is rigorously based on the Riemann-Hilbert analysis of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials. We provide an analysis with an error term of order N^(-2 h) where 1/h = 2 nu+2 is the exponent of non-regularity of the effective potential, thus improving even in the usual case the analysis of the pertinent literature. The behavior of the first finite number of zeroes (eigenvalues) appearing in the new band is analyzed and connected with the location of the zeroes of certain Freud polynomials. In general all these newborn zeroes approach the point of nonregularity at the rate N^(-h) whereas one (a stray zero) lags behind at a slower rate of approach. The kernels for the correlator functions in the scaling coordinate near the emerging band are provided together with the subleading term: in particular the transition between K and K+1 eigenvalues is analyzed in detail.

Abstract:
We propose an extension of the su(2,2|4) superalgebra to incorporate the $F1/D1$ string charges in type IIB string theory on the $AdS_{5} \times S^{5}$ background, or the electro-magnetic charges in the dual super Yang-Mills theory. We propose an extension of the su(2,2|4) superalgebra to incorporate the $F1/D1$ string charges in type IIB string theory on the $AdS_{5} \times S^{5}$ background, or the electro-magnetic charges in the dual super Yang-Mills theory. With the charges introduced, the superalgebra inevitably undergoes a noncentral extension, as noted recently in [1]. After develo** a group theoretical method of obtaining the noncentral extension, we show that the charges form a certain nonunitary representation of the original unextended superalgebra, subject to some constraints. We solve the constraints completely and show that, apart from the su(2,2|4) generators, there exist 899 complex brane charges in the extended algebra. Explicitly we present all the super-commutators among them.

Abstract:
We study combinatorial aspects of q-weighted, length-L Forrester-Baxter paths, P^{p, p'}_{a, b, c}(L), where p, p', a, b, c \in Z_{+}, 0 < p < p', 0 < a, b, c < p', c = b \pm 1, L+a-b \equiv 0 (mod 2), and p and p' are co-prime.
We obtain a bijection between P^{p, p'}_{a, b, c}(L) and partitions with certain prescribed hook differences. Thereby, we obtain a new description of the q-weights of…

Thereby, we obtain a new description of the q-weights of P^{p, p'}_{a, b, c}(L).
Using the new weights, and defining s_0 and r_0 to be the smallest non-negative integers for which |p s_0 - p' r_0|=1, we restrict the discussion to P^{p, p'}_{s_0} \equiv P^{p, p'}_{s_0,s_0,s_0+1}(L), and introduce two combinatorial transforms:
1. A Bailey-type transform B:
P^{p, p'}_{s_0}(L) -> P^{p, p'+p}_{s_0 + r_0}(L'), L \leq L',
2. A duality-type transform D:
P^{p, p'}_{s_0}(L) -> P^{p'-p, p'}_{s_0}(L).
We study the action of B and D, as q-polynomial transforms on the P^{p, p'}_{s_0}(L) generating functions, χ^{p, p'}_{s_0}(L). In the limit L -> \infinity, χ^{p, p'}_{s_0}(L) reduces to the Virasoro characters, χ^{p, p'}_{r_0, s_0}, of minimal conformal field theories M^{p, p'}, or equivalently, to the one-point functions of regime-III Forrester-Baxter models.
As an application of the B and D transforms, we re-derive the constant-sign expressions for χ^{p, p'}_{r_0, s_0}, first derived by Berkovich and McCoy.
