In this paper, we consider the direct and inverse problem for isotropic scatterers with two conductive boundary conditions. First, we show the uniqueness for recovering the coefficients from the known far-field data at a fixed incident direction for multiple frequencies. Then, we address the inverse shape problem for recovering the scatterer for the measured far-field data at a fixed frequency. Furthermore, we examine the direct sampling method for recovering the scatterer by studying the factorization for the far-field operator. The direct sampling method is stable with respect to noisy data and valid in two dimensions for partial aperture data. The theoretical results are verified with numerical examples to analyze the performance by the direct sampling method.

This paper examines the relationship between sparse random network architectures and neural network stability by examining the eigenvalue spectral distribution. Specifically, we generalise classical eigenspectral results to sparse connectivity matrices obeying Dale's law: neurons function as either excitatory (E) or inhibitory (I). By defining sparsity as the probability that a neutron is connected to another neutron, we give explicit formulae that shows how sparsity interacts with the E/I population statistics to scale key features of the eigenspectrum, in both the balanced and unbalanced cases. Our results show that the eigenspectral outlier is linearly scaled by sparsity, but the eigenspectral radius and density now depend on a nonlinear interaction between sparsity, the E/I population means and variances. Contrary to previous results, we demonstrate that a non-uniform eigenspectral density results if any of the E/I population statistics differ, not just the E/I population variances. We also find that 'local' eigenvalue-outliers are present for sparse random matrices obeying Dale's law, and demonstrate that these eigenvalues can be controlled by a modified zero row-sum constraint for the balanced case, however, they persist in the unbalanced case. We examine all levels of connection (sparsity), and distributed E/I population weights, to describe a general class of sparse connectivity structures which unifies all the previous results as special cases of our framework. Sparsity and Dale's law are both fundamental anatomical properties of biological neural networks. We generalise their combined effects on the eigenspectrum of random neural networks, thereby gaining insight into network stability, state transitions and the structure-function relationship.

We consider an inverse shape problem coming from electrical impedance tomography with a Robin transmission condition. In general, a boundary condition of Robin type models corrosion. In this paper, we study two methods for recovering an interior corroded region from electrostatic data. We consider the case where we have small volume and extended regions. For the case where the region has small volume, we will derive an asymptotic expansion of the current gap operator and prove that a MUSIC-type algorithm can be used to recover the region. In the case where one has an extended region, we will show that the regularized factorization method can be used to recover said region. Numerical examples will be presented for both cases in two dimensions in the unit circle.

In this paper, we investigate two transmission eigenvalue problems associated with the scattering of a media with a coated boundary. In recent years, there has been a lot of interest in studying these eigenvalue problems. It can be shown that the eigenvalues can be recovered from the scattering data and hold information about the material properties of the media one wishes to determine. Motivated by recent works we will study the electromagnetic transmission eigenvalue problem and scalar `zero-index' transmission eigenvalue problem for a media with a coated boundary. Existence of infinitely many real eigenvalues will be proven as well as showing that the eigenvalues depend monotonically on the refractive index and boundary parameter. Numerical examples in two spatial dimensions are presented for the scalar `zero-index' transmission eigenvalue problem. Also, in our investigation we prove that as the boundary parameter tends to zero and infinity we recover the classical eigenvalue problems.

These methods fall under the category of sampling methods where an indicator function is constructed using the far-field operator. Motivated by some recent work, we study the standard indicator using the far-field operator and two indicators derived from the factorization method. We show the equivalence of two indicators previously studied as well as propose a new indicator based on the Tikhonov regularization applied to the far-field equation for the factorization method. Finally, we give some numerical examples to show how the reconstructions compare to other direct sampling methods.

In this paper, we derive a Sampling Method to solve the inverse shape problem of recovering an inclusion with a generalized impedance condition from electrostatic Cauchy data. The generalized impedance condition is a second-order differential operator applied to the boundary of the inclusion. We assume that the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map** is given from measuring the current on the outer boundary from an imposed voltage. A simple numerical example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed inversion method for recovering the inclusion. We also consider the inverse impedance problem of determining the material parameters from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map** assuming the inclusion has been reconstructed where uniqueness for the reconstruction of the coefficients is proven.

In this paper, we consider the inverse scattering problem associated with an inhomogeneous media with a conductive boundary. First, we discuss the inverse conductivity problem of reconstructing the conductivity parameter from scattering data. Next, we consider the corresponding interior transmission eigenvalue problem. This is a new class of eigenvalue problem that is not elliptic, not self-adjoint, and non-linear, which gives the possibility of complex eigenvalues. We investigate the convergence of the eigenvalues as the conductivity parameter tends to zero as well as prove existence and discreteness for the case of an absorbing media. Lastly, several numerical and analytical results support the theory and we show that the inside-outside duality method can be used to reconstruct the interior conductive eigenvalues.

In this paper, we consider two time-harmonic inverse scattering problems of reconstructing penetrable inhomogeneous obstacles from near field measurements. First we appeal to the Born approximation for reconstructing small isotropic scatterers via the MUSIC algorithm. Some numerical reconstructions using the MUSIC algorithm are provided for reconstructing the scatterer and piecewise constant refractive index using a Bayesian method. We then consider the reconstruction of an anisotropic extended scatterer by {a modified linear sampling method and the factorization method applied }to the near field operator. This provides a rigorous characterization of the support of the anisotropic obstacle in terms of a range test derived from the measured data. Under appropriate assumptions on the material parameters, the derived factorization can be used to determine the support of the medium without a-priori knowledge of the material properties.

We consider the interior transmission problem associated with the scattering by an inhomogeneous (possibly anisotropic) highly oscillating periodic media. We show that, under appropriate assumptions, the solution of the interior transmission problem converges to the solution of a homogenized problem as the period goes to zero. Furthermore, we prove that the associated real transmission eigenvalues converge to transmission eigenvalues of the homogenized problem. Finally we show how to use the first transmission eigenvalue of the period media, which is measurable from the scattering data, to obtain information about constant effective material properties of the periodic media. The convergence results presented here are not optimal. Such results with rate of convergence involve the analysis of the boundary correction and will be subject of a forthcoming paper.
