The distance conjecture states that for theories with moduli coupled to gravity a tower of states becomes light exponentially in the geodesic distance in moduli space. This specifies how effective field theories break down for large field values. However, phenomenological field theories have no moduli, but a scalar potential that deforms dynamical trajectories away from geodesic curves. In this note we speculate on how one should generalise the distance conjecture to include a scalar potential. We test the generalised distance conjecture in a few cases, demonstrate a link with pseudo-/fake supersymmetry and apply it to the ekpyrotic scenario in cosmology. For the latter we observe that the pre-uplift KKLT potential could provide a stringy embedding of ekpyrosis away from the asymptotic regimes in field space.

We reconsider the perturbative stability of Euclidean axion wormholes. The quadratic action that governs linear perturbations is derived directly in Euclidean gravity. We demonstrate explicitly that a stability analysis in which one treats the axion as a normal two-form gauge field is equivalent to one performed in the Hodge-dual formulation, where one considers the axion as a scalar with a wrong-sign kinetic term. Both analyses indicate that axion wormholes are perturbatively stable, even in the presence of a massless dilaton, or saxion, field that couples to the axion.

This paper analyzes the effective field theory perspective on modern physics through the lens of the quantum theory of gravitational interaction. The historical part argues that the search for a theory of quantum gravity stimulated the change in outlook that characterizes the modern approach to the Standard Model of particle physics and General Relativity. We present some landmarks covering a long period, i.e., from the beginning of the 1930s until 1994, when, according to Steven Weinberg, the modern bottom-up approach to General Relativity began. Starting from the first attempt to apply the quantum field theory techniques to perturbatively quantize Einstein's theory, we explore its developments and interaction with the top-down approach encoded by String Theory. In the last part of the paper, we focus on this last approach to describe the relationship between our modern understanding of String Theory and Effective Field Theory in today's panorama. To this end, the non-historical part briefly explains the modern concepts of moduli stabilization and Swampland to understand another change in focus that explains the present framework where some string theorists move.

We show how flux vacua that differ from each other in flux quanta can be seen as different vacua in a single scalar potential of an enlarged field space, which resolves the separation by thin domain walls. This observation, which is motivated by the AdS Distance Conjecture, allows one to compute distances between different vacua using the usual field space metric. We verify for explicit examples such as scale-seperated IIA flux vacua and the IIB Freund-Rubin vacua that the Distance Conjecture (for scalar fields) is satisfied and that the asymptotic directions in the enlarged field space are indeed hyperbolic. This enlarged field space contains the tachyon fields on the unstable $\tilde{\mathrm{D}}p$-branes of type II string theory, which can induce the brane charges of the stable D-branes. We suggest that requiring continuous interpolations refines the Cobordism Conjecture and postdicts the existence of unstable $\tilde{\mathrm{D}}p$-branes.

The wormholes are perturbatively stable, but regularity of the Euclidean geometry implies an upper bound on the axion flux. Viewed as no-boundary saddle points, wormholes are suppressed relative to the round sphere. The symmetric kettlebell with maximal axion density has vanishing Euclidean action. Continuing into the Lorentzian across the equator, the solutions describe two expanding branches of de Sitter space filled with an axion field that rapidly dilutes and connected by a quantum bounce across which the arrow of time reverses.

These lecture notes provide a pedagogical introduction, with exercises, to the techniques used in attempts to construct vacua with stabilised moduli in string theory. The reader is only assumed to have a basic knowledge of general relativity, geometry and field theory. We emphasize physical arguments and focus on the latest developments involving the Swampland program that point to a tension for the existence of AdS vacua with small extra dimensions or dS vacua with parametric control. We include a brief summary of the current status of these thorny issues. Unlike many other reviews we make almost no use of the technicalities associated to supersymmetric geometries. These notes are largely based on lectures given at the CERN Winter School on Supergravity, Strings and Gauge Theory and in the Tehran School on Swampland Program held in the summer of 2022.

Euclidean wormhole geometries sourced by axions and dilatons are puzzling objects in quantum gravity. From one side of the wormhole to the other, the scalar fields traverse a few Planck lengths in field space and so corrections from the UV might potentially affect the consistency of the solution, even when the wormholes are large. Motivated by this, we carry out the first explicit 10d lifts of regular Euclidean axion wormholes. We start off with the lift of Giddings-Strominger wormholes in $N=8$ Euclidean supergravity over a 6-torus to 10d type IIA supergravity and find the solution can be everywhere tuned into the parametrically controlled supergravity regime. Secondly, we construct explicit wormholes in AdS spaces and find them again to be under parametric control. We find the first wormhole solutions in massive type IIA on $S^3\times S^3$ and in type IIB on $T^{1,1}$. The latter has an explicit holographic dual, and similar to the earlier constructions in $AdS_5 \times S^5/Z_k$, the wormholes violate operator positivity since $Tr(F\pm{\star F})^2<0$. This puzzle might arise from subtleties related to computing holographic $n$-point functions in the presence of multiple boundaries.

It has been argued that orientifold vacua with fluxes in type IIA string theory can achieve moduli stabilisation and arbitrary decoupling between the AdS and KK scales upon sending certain unconstrained RR-flux quanta to infinity. In this paper, we find a novel scalar field in the open-string sector that allows us to interpolate between such IIA vacua that differ in flux quanta and find that the limit of large fluxes is nicely consistent with the distance conjecture. This shows that the massive IIA vacua pass an important Swampland criterion and suggests that scale-separated AdS vacua might not be in the Swampland. Our analysis also naturally suggests a flux analogue of "Reid's fantasy" where flux vacua that differ in quantised flux numbers can be connected through trajectories in open-string field space and not just via singular domain walls.

Such vacua come from the near-horizon of D$(d-2)$/D$(8-d)$ branes and are supersymmetric for odd values of $d$. For $d=1$ we speculate that the hallmark of conformal symmetry for the matrix model dual is a vanishing free energy. The matrix dual was recently constructed by arXiv:2101.01732 by adding matrix interactions coming from strings stretching between the D$(-1)$ and D$7$ branes to the IKKT matrix model. We find that the corresponding supergravity solution indeed has vanishing on-shell action. Specific $F_5$ fluxes need to be switched on as a consequence of (a T-dual version of) the Hanany-Witten effect.

We demonstrate that, if the usual phenomenological compactifications of IIB string theory with warped throats and anti-branes make sense, there must exist spherical brane shells in 4d that are overcharged. They correspond to classical over-extremal objects but without the usual naked singularities. The objects are made from D3-particles that puff into spherical 5-branes that stabilise at finite radii in 4d and whose inside corresponds to the supersymmetric AdS vacuum. One can think of these shells as stabilised Brown-Teitelboim bubbles. We find that these objects can be significantly larger than the string scale depending on the details of the warped compactification.

We study flux compactifications of massive IIA supergravity with O6 planes which are claimed to allow moduli-stabilised and scale separated AdS$_3$ and AdS$_4$ vacua at arbitrary weak coupling and large volume. A recent refinement of the AdS Distance Conjecture is shown to be inconsistent with the class of AdS$_3$ vacua because the requisite discrete higher form symmetries are absent. We further perform a tree-level study of non-perturbative decays for the nonsupersymmetric versions of the AdS$_3$ solutions, and find that the vacua are stable within this approximation. Finally, we provide an initial investigation of the would-be dual CFT$_2$'s and CFT$_3$'s. We study roughly a dozen different models and find for all AdS$_4$ DGKT-type vacua that the dual operators to the lightest scalars have integer dimensions. For the putative CFT$_2$ dual theories of the AdS$_3$ vacua we find no integer dimensions for the operators.

Demanding that charged Nariai black holes in (quasi-)de Sitter space decay without becoming super-extremal implies a lower bound on the masses of charged particles, known as the Festina Lente (FL) bound. In this paper we fix the $\mathcal{O}(1)$ constant in the bound and elucidate various aspects of it, as well as extensions to $d>4$ and to situations with scalar potentials and dilatonic couplings. We also discuss phenomenological implications of FL including an explanation of why the Higgs potential cannot have a local minimum at the origin, thus explaining why the weak force must be broken. For constructions of meta-stable dS involving anti-brane uplift scenarios, even though the throat region is consistent with FL, the bound implies that we cannot have any light charged matter fields coming from any far away region in the compactified geometry, contrary to the fact that they are typically expected to arise in these scenarios. This strongly suggests that introduction of warped anti-branes in the throat cannot be decoupled from the bulk dynamics as is commonly assumed. Finally, we provide some evidence that in certain situations the FL bound can have implications even with gravity decoupled and illustrate this in the context of non-compact throats.

In theories with extra dimensions, the cosmological hierarchy problem can be thought of as the unnaturally large radius of the observable universe in Kaluza-Klein units. We sketch a dynamical mechanism that relaxes this. In the early universe scenario we propose, three large spatial dimensions arise through tunneling from a 'cosmic egg', an effectively one-dimensional configuration with all spatial dimensions compact and of comparable, small size. If the string landscape is dominated by low-dimensional compactifications, cosmic eggs would be natural initial conditions for cosmology. A quantum cosmological treatment of a toy model egg predicts that, in a variant of the Hartle-Hawking state, cosmic eggs break to form higher dimensional universes with a small, but positive cosmological constant or quintessence energy. Hence cosmic egg cosmology yields a scenario in which the seemingly unnaturally small observed value of the vacuum energy can arise from natural initial conditions.

In the context of the Weak Gravity Conjecture the notion of quasi-extremality for black holes and branes was recently defined as the property of having either vanishing horizon size or surface gravity. It was derived that such objects obey a no-force condition. In this short note I present a simplified derivation that is essentially present in the formalism of timelike reduction pioneered by Breitenlohner, Gibbons and Maison. This formalism also provides the natural definition of quasi-extremality for gravitational instantons (and wormholes) sourced by axion fluxes and strengthens the argument that macroscopic axion wormholes do not contribute in the path integral since they are self-repulsive in a Euclidean sense.

However for a concrete torus example the meta-stable dS window disappears after a quantization of fluxes and charges. We discuss the prospects of more general G2 compactifications and argue that they could potentially alleviate the tachyon problem by introducing larger tadpole numbers and warped throats. However, exactly those ingredients then seem to push the vacuum towards the brink of perturbative brane-flux decay in the open string sector. This is either a remarkable illustration of the no-dS swampland conjecture or such vacua live in very difficult to control regions of parameter space.

I present an informal overview of several recent results about Euclidean saddle points sourced by axion fields in quantum gravity (AdS/CFT), such as wormholes, their extremal "D-instanton" limits and their under-extremal singular counterparts. Concerning wormholes we argue they cannot contribute to the path integral because a stability analysis suggests they fragment like other super-extremal objects. For concrete AdS/CFT embeddings the Euclidean saddle point solutions are neatly described by geodesic curves living inside moduli spaces and can typically be solved for using group theory. Our working example is $AdS_5\times S^5/\mathbb{Z}_k$ and allows for smooth Euclidean wormholes. For the supersymmetric D-instanton-like solutions we seem to find a match with the instantons in the dual $\mathcal{N}=2$ quivers. This match even extends a bit further to self-dual instantons without supersymmetry.

In this note we observe that positive runaway potentials can generically be stabilized by abelian $p$-form fluxes, leading to parametrically controlled de Sitter solutions after compactification to a lower dimension. When compactifying from 4d to 2d the dS solutions are metastable, whereas all higher dimensional cases are unstable. The existence of these dS solutions require that a certain inequality involving the derivatives of the potential and $p$-form gauge coupling is satisfied. This inequality is not satisfied in simple stringy examples (outside of the scope of Maldacena-Nuñez), which unsurprisingly avoid this route to dS solutions. We can apply our techniques to construct $dS_2$ solutions in the Standard Model plus an additional runaway scalar such as quintessence. Demanding that these are avoided leads to (weak) phenomenological constraints on the time variation of the fine structure constant and QCD axion-photon coupling.

In the Swampland philosophy of constraining EFTs from black hole mechanics we study charged black hole evaporation in de Sitter space. We establish how the black hole mass and charge change over time due to both Hawking radiation and Schwinger pair production as a function of the masses and charges of the elementary particles in the theory. We find a lower bound on the mass of charged particles by demanding that large charged black holes evaporate back to empty de Sitter space, in accordance with the thermal picture of the de Sitter static patch. This bound is satisfied by the charged spectrum of the Standard Model. We discuss phenomenological implications for the cosmological hierarchy problem and inflation. Enforcing the thermal picture also leads to a heuristic remnant argument for the Weak Gravity Conjecture in de Sitter space, where the usual kinematic arguments do not work. We also comment on a possible relation between WGC and universal bounds on equilibration times. All in all, charged black holes in de Sitter should make haste to evaporate, but they should not rush it.

The only example that does not seem to fit this logic is the $\bar{\text{D6}}$-brane because of a no-go theorem for well behaved supergravity solutions with negative D6 charge. In this paper we first review the existing results demonstrating how brane polarisation resolves singularities for $\bar{\text{D3}}$-branes and then we improve on the description of the polarisation of $\bar{\text{D6}}$-branes into KK5 dipoles. We argue that the meta-stable state carries exactly zero (anti-)D6 charge, which is the unique way around the no-go theorem. We then provide numerical evidence for well-behaved solutions that describe such meta-stable states.

We analyse the ten-dimensional Einstein equations in the KKLT setting. We verify that the quartic gaugino term is needed to remove singularities in the on-shell action as suggested by Hamada et. al. We contrast two approaches that have been taken in the literature when employing the effect of gaugino condensation in the ten-dimensional equations of motion. Here we follow the proposal to insert explicit non-zero fermion bilinar vev into the localised energy-momentum tensor of the 7-branes obtained from varying the 10d on-shell action with respect to the 10d metric. Our procedure is common in semi-classical physics and is manifestly local in 10d. However, it does not lead to the KKLT effective field theory. The alternative procedure of deriving the energy momentum tensor after replacing fermion bilinears by the gaugino vev, might be less well motivated in 10d, but reproduces the results of the KKLT effective field theory.

These instantons are expected to be holographically dual to instantons in an $\mathcal{N}=2$ necklace quiver gauge theory in four dimensions with $k$ gauge nodes, at large N. For the supersymmetric instantons we find a precise match between the on-shell actions and the vevs of $\text{Tr}[F^2]$ and $\text{Tr}[F\wedge F]$ computed on both sides of the duality. This correspondence requires an exact identification between the massless supergravity scalars and the dual gauge couplings which we give in detail. We also find a candidate for the supergravity dual of a quasi-instanton in the quiver theory, which is a non-supersymmetric extremal solution.

We find new and compelling evidence for the meta-stability of SUSY-breaking states in holographic backgrounds whose consistency has been the source of ongoing disagreements in the literature. As a concrete example, we analyse anti-D3 branes at the tip of the Klebanov-Strassler (KS) throat. Using the blackfold formalism we examine how temperature affects the conjectured meta-stable state and determine whether and how the existing extremal results generalize when going beyond extremality. In the extremal limit we exactly recover the results of Kachru, Pearson and Verlinde (KPV), in a regime of parameter space that was previously inaccesible. Away from extremality we uncover a meta-stable black NS5 state that disappears near a geometric transition where black anti-D3 branes and black NS5 branes become indistinguishable. This is remarkably consistent with complementary earlier results based on the analysis of regularity conditions of backreacted solutions. We therefore provide highly non-trivial evidence for the meta-stability of anti-branes in non-compact throat geometries since we find a consistent picture over different regimes in parameter space.

We show that Euclidean axion wormholes in theories of gravity coupled to a single axion have several independent inhomogeneous perturbations that lower the Euclidean action. Our analysis relies on a judiciously chosen gauge-invariant variable which makes the negative mode structure about axion wormholes transparent. Perturbations lowering the action are concentrated in the neck region and exist for wormholes in flat space and in AdS. Their presence means axion wormholes are not relevant saddle points of the functional integral in quantum gravity. This resolves the paradoxes associated with these solutions from the viewpoint of AdS/CFT. We conjecture that the lower action configurations one flows to are ensembles of microscopic `quantum wormholes' with unit charge.

There exists an extension of IIA Calabi-Yau orientifolds for which some of the D6 branes (required to solve the RR tadpole) are dissolved in $F_2$ fluxes. The backreaction of these fluxes deforms the Calabi-Yau manifold into a specific class of SU(3)-structure manifolds. The lift to M-theory again defines compact G2 manifolds, which in case of toroidal orbifolds are a twisted generalisation of the Joyce construction. This observation also allows a clear identification of the moduli space of a warped compactification with fluxes. We provide a few explicit examples, of which some can be constructed from T-dualising known IIB orientifolds with fluxes. Finally we discuss supersymmetry breaking in this context and suggest that the purely geometric picture in M-theory could provide a simpler setting to address some of the consistency issues of moduli stabilisation and de Sitter uplifting.

We elaborate on the recent work of Moritz et. al. where it is argued that anti-brane uplifting in KKLT models never leads to dS vacua. This is due to flattening effects in the effective potential found when treating the gaugino condensate energy momentum in ten-dimensional supergravity. We point out that the Silverstein-Saltman uplift, which effectively dissolves the anti-brane in 3-form fluxes, is a conceptually simpler setting in which flattening effects can be present, without requiring assumptions about UV/IR mixings. Along the way we revise and improve on the arguments of Moritz et. al. and discuss various subleties when studying gaugino condensates from a ten-dimensional point-of-view. In particular, the "no dS" argument is slightly weaker and we emphasize a technical loophole that might allow dS vacua. Finally we suggest that AdS vacua which are parametrically controlled from these flattening effects belong to the Swampland. We comment on the relation with the recent refined dS Swampland inequalities.

On the supergravity side the (extremal) instanton solutions are neatly described by the (lightlike) geodesics on the AdS moduli space for which we find the explicit expression and compute the on-shell actions in terms of the quantised charges. The lightlike geodesics fall into two categories depending on the degree of nilpotency of the Noether charge matrix carried by the geodesic: For degree 2 the instantons preserve 8 supercharges and for degree 3 they are non-SUSY. We expect that these findings should apply to more general situations in the sense that there is a map between geodesics on moduli-spaces of Euclidean AdS vacua and instantons with holographic counterparts.

We put forward new explicit realisations of dS/CFT that relate ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Euclidean vector models with reversed spin-statistics in three dimensions to specific supersymmetric Vasiliev theories in four-dimensional de Sitter space. The partition function of the free supersymmetric vector model deformed by a range of low spin deformations that preserve supersymmetry appears to specify a well-defined wave function with asymptotic de Sitter boundary conditions in the bulk. In particular we find the wave function is globally peaked at undeformed de Sitter space, with a low amplitude for strong deformations. This suggests that supersymmetric de Sitter space is stable in higher-spin gravity and in particular free from ghosts. We speculate this is a limiting case of the de Sitter realizations in exotic string theories.

Gravitational domain wall solutions in gauged supergravity are often constructed within truncations that do not include vectors. As a consequence the gauge group is only a global symmetry of this truncation. The consistency of the truncation requires the restriction to solutions with vanishing Noether charge under this global symmetry, since otherwise vector fields are sourced. We show that this has interesting consequences for the orbit structure of the solutions under the global symmetries. We investigate this for $\text{CSO}(p,q,r)$-gaugings in various dimensions with scalar fields truncated to the $\text{SL}(n,\mathbb{R})/\text{SO}(n)$ subcoset. We prove that the seed solution $-$ which generates all other solutions using only global transformations $-$ has a diagonal coset matrix. This means that there exists a transformation at the boundary of the geometry that diagonalises the coset matrix and that this same transformation also diagonalises the whole flow as a consequence of the vanishing charge.

The unwinding of flux is caused by its annihilation against branes. The resulting inflaton potential is linear with periodic modulations. We initiate an analysis of the inflationary dynamics and cosmological observables, which are highly constrained by moduli stabilization. For the simplified model of single-Kähler Calabi-Yau spaces we find that many, though not all of the consistency constraints can be satisfied. Particularly, in this simple model geometric constraints are in tension with obtaining the observed amplitude of the scalar power spectrum. However, we do find 60 efolds of inflation with a trans-Planckian field excursion which offers the hope that slightly more complicated models can lead to a fully consistent explicit construction of large field inflation of this kind.

We find that within the calculable supergravity regime where $g_s p$ is large, the $\overline{\text{D6}}$ branes annihilate immediately against the fluxes despite the existence of a metastable state at small $p/M$ in the probe approximation. The crucial property that causes this naive conflict with effective field theory is a singularity in the 3-form flux, which we cut off at string scale. Our result explains the absence of regular solutions at finite temperature and suggests there should be a smooth time-dependent solution. We also discuss the qualitative differences between $\overline{\text{D6}}$ branes and $\overline{\text{D3}}$ branes, which makes it a priori not obvious to conclude the same instability for $\overline{\text{D3}}$ branes.

Flat domain walls and spherical black holes are solutions to coupled second-order ODE's of the Hamiltonian form. Hamilton-Jacobi theory then implies that first-order flow equations always exist (possibly up to isolated submanifolds). If the first-order equations factorise in a specific way, they take a form that has been named fake supersymmetry. We point out that this factorisation is always possible at zero temperature. We therefore propose a less generic definition of fake supersymmetry, which involves the boundary conditions in a non-trivial way, and we analyse its physical relevance. For instance attractor flows are necessarily fake supersymmetric in our restricted sense. To illustrate the definition we provide new analytic solutions for axion-dilaton domain walls with fake superpotentials that were argued not to exist.

Our model is the simplest orientifold with fluxes we are aware of: an O6/D6 compactification on T^3/Z_2 in massive IIA with H_3-flux. The BPS domain walls correspond to a O6/D6/NS5/D8 bound state. Our analysis reveals that the domain wall energy computed in gauged SUGRA is unaffected by the localisation of the O6/D6 sources.

We revisit necessary conditions for gluing local (anti-)D3 throats into flux throats with opposite charge. These consistency conditions typically reveal singularities in the three-form fluxes whose meaning is being debated. In this note we prove, under well-motivated assumptions, that unphysical singularities can potentially be avoided when the anti-branes polarise into spherical NS5 branes with a specific radius. If a consistent solution can then indeed be found, our analysis seems to suggests a rather large correction to the radius of the polarization sphere compared to the probe result. We furthermore comment on the gluing conditions at finite temperature and point out that one specific assumption of a recent no-go theorem can be broken if anti-branes are indeed to polarise into spherical NS5 branes at zero temperature.

Abstract:
Fluxes can decay via the nucleation of Brown-Teitelboim bubbles, but when the decaying fluxes induce D-brane charges this process must be accompanied with an annihilation of D-branes. This occurs via dynamics inside the bubble wall as was well described for (anti-)D3 branes branes annihilating against 3-form fluxes. In this paper we extend this to the other Dp branes with p smaller than seven. Gen…

Generically there are two decay channels: one for the RR flux and one for the NSNS flux. The RR channel is accompanied by brane annihilation that can be understood from the Dp branes polarising into D(p+2) branes, whereas the NSNS channel corresponds to Dp branes polarising into NS5 branes or KK5 branes. We illustrate this with the decay of antibranes probing local toroidal throat geometries obtained from T-duality of the D6 solution in massive type IIA. We show that anti-Dp branes are metastable against annihilation in these backgrounds, at least at the probe level.

Abstract:
In the recent literature it has been questioned whether the local backreaction of antibranes in flux throats can induce a perturbative brane-flux decay. Most evidence for this can be gathered for D6 branes and Dp branes smeared over 6-p compact directions, in line with the absence of finite temperature solutions for these cases. The solutions in the literature have flat worldvolume geometries and non-compact transversal spaces. In this paper we consider what happens when the worldvolume is AdS and the transversal space is compact. We show that in these circumstances brane polarisation smoothens out the flux singularity, which is an indication that brane-flux decay is prevented. This is consistent with the fact that the cosmological constant would be less negative after brane-flux decay. Our results extend recent results on AdS_7 solutions from D6 branes to AdS_(p+1) solutions from Dp branes. We show that supersymmetry of the AdS solutions depend on p non-trivially.
