A classical observer can measure elapsed proper time along their worldline. When observers are coupled to a system with internal correlations, measurements of elapsed time may inherit these correlations. We show that derivatives of the on-shell action with respect to worldline mass compute correlation functions of worldline proper length at tree level. We study worldlines coupled to a scalar field. We calculate the length-length two-point function and find it arises from correlated path fluctuations. As an application, we propose that the logarithm of local correlators serves as a generating function of length correlators, which generalizes the on-shell action prescription. Using this proposal, we extract AdS worldline observables from local CFT correlators as computed by Witten diagrams. We briefly discuss extensions to gravity, interferometers, and the holographic encoding of observer time.

Inspired by the second law of thermodynamics, we study the change in subsystem entropy generated by dynamical unitary evolution of a product state in a bipartite system. Working at leading order in perturbative interactions, we prove that the quantum $n$-Tsallis entropy of a subsystem never decreases, $ΔS_n \geq 0$, provided that subsystem is initialized as a statistical mixture of states of equal probability. This is true for any choice of interactions and any initialization of the complementary subsystem. When this condition on the initial state is violated, it is always possible to explicitly construct a "Maxwell's demon" process that decreases the subsystem entropy, $ΔS_n < 0$. Remarkably, for the case of particle scattering, the circuit diagrams corresponding to $n$-Tsallis entropy are the same as the on-shell diagrams that have appeared in the modern scattering amplitudes program, and $ΔS_n \geq 0$ is intimately related to the nonnegativity of cross-sections.

We define a perturbatively calculable quantity--the on-shell correlator--which furnishes a unified description of particle dynamics in curved spacetime. Specializing to the case of flat and anti-de Sitter space, on-shell correlators coincide precisely with on-shell scattering amplitudes and boundary correlators, respectively. Remarkably, we find that symmetric manifolds admit a generalization of on-shell kinematics in which the corresponding momenta are literally the isometry generators of the spacetime acting on the external kinematic data. These isometric momenta are intrinsically non-commutative but exhibit on-shell conditions that are identical to those of flat space, thus providing a common language for computing and representing on-shell correlators which is agnostic about the underlying geometry. Afterwards, we compute tree-level on-shell correlators for biadjoint scalar (BAS) theory and the nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) and learn that color-kinematics duality is manifested at the level of fields under a map** of the color algebra to the algebra of gauged isometries on the spacetime manifold. Last but not least, we present a field theoretic derivation of the fundamental BCJ relations for on-shell correlators following from the existence of certain conserved currents in BAS theory and the NLSM.

We compute the metric of holographic four-point functions and include corrections generated by tree Witten diagrams in the bulk. In this setting, we translate properties of correlators into the language of information geometry. Cross terms in the information metric encode non-identity operators in the OPE. We find that the information metric is asymptotically AdS. Finally, we discuss an information metric for transition amplitudes.

Differences between flat and curved space are captured by commutators. We study the nonlinear sigma model at four points as an explicit example and find that color-kinematics duality holds in generic spacetimes. We illustrate our approach in the AdS transition amplitude, a type of on shell correlation function. We find a double copy procedure at four points that connects the nonlinear sigma model, the biadjoint scalar theory, and the special Galileon theory.

We derive the Cutkosky rules for conformal field theories (CFTs) at weak and strong coupling. These rules give a simple, diagrammatic method to compute the double-commutator that appears in the Lorentzian inversion formula. We first revisit weakly-coupled CFTs in flat space, where the cuts are performed on Feynman diagrams. We then generalize these rules to strongly-coupled holographic CFTs, where the cuts are performed on the Witten diagrams of the dual theory. In both cases, Cutkosky rules factorize loop diagrams into on-shell sub-diagrams and generalize the standard S-matrix cutting rules. These rules are naturally formulated and derived in Lorentzian momentum space, where the double-commutator is manifestly related to the CFT optical theorem. Finally, we study the AdS cutting rules in explicit examples at tree level and one loop. In these examples, we confirm that the rules are consistent with the OPE limit and that we recover the S-matrix optical theorem in the flat space limit. The AdS cutting rules and the CFT dispersion formula together form a holographic unitarity method to reconstruct Witten diagrams from their cuts.

We develop a systematic unitarity method for loop-level AdS scattering amplitudes, dual to non-planar CFT correlators, from both bulk and boundary perspectives. We identify cut operators acting on bulk amplitudes that put virtual lines on shell, and show how the conformal partial wave decomposition of the amplitudes may be efficiently computed by gluing lower-loop amplitudes. A central role is played by the double discontinuity of the amplitude, which has a direct relation to these cuts. We then exhibit a precise, intuitive map between the diagrammatic approach in the bulk using cutting and gluing, and the algebraic, holographic unitarity method of arXiv:1612.03891 that constructs the non-planar correlator from planar CFT data. Our analysis focuses mostly on four-point, one-loop diagrams -- we compute cuts of the scalar bubble, triangle and box, as well as some one-particle reducible diagrams -- in addition to the five-point tree and four-point double-ladder. Analogies with S-matrix unitarity methods are drawn throughout.

We derive forms of light-state dominance for correlators in CFT$_d$, making precise the sense in which correlators can be approximated by the contribution of light operator exchanges. Our main result is that the four-point function of operators with dimension $Δ$ is approximated, with bounded error, by the contribution of operators with scaling dimension below $Δ_c > 2Δ$ in the appropriate OPE channel. Adapting an existing modular invariance argument, we use crossing symmetry to show that the heavy-state contribution is suppressed by a relative factor of $e^{2Δ-Δ_c}$. We extend this result to the first sheet and derivatives of the correlator. Further exploiting technical similarities between crossing and modular invariance, we prove analogous results for the $2d$ partition function along the way.
We then turn to effective field theory in gapped theories and AdS/CFT, and make some general comments about the effect of integrating out heavy particles in the bulk. Combining our bounds with the Lorentzian OPE inversion formula we show that, under certain conditions, light-state dominance implies that integrating out heavy exchanges leads to higher-derivative couplings suppressed at large $Δ_{gap}$.

In the AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence, physical interest attaches to understanding Virasoro conformal blocks at large central charge and in a kinematical regime of large Lorentzian time separation, $t\sim c$. However, almost no analytical information about this regime is presently available. By employing the Wilson line representation we derive new results on conformal blocks at late times, effectively resumming all dependence on $t/c$. This is achieved in the context of "light-light" blocks, as opposed to the richer, but much less tractable, "heavy-light" blocks. The results exhibit an initial decay, followed by erratic behavior and recurrences. We also connect this result to gravitational contributions to anomalous dimensions of double trace operators by using the Lorentzian inversion formula to extract the latter. Inverting the stress tensor block provides a pedagogical example of inversion formula machinery.

The time evolution of entanglement tracks how information propagates in interacting quantum systems. We study entanglement entropy in CFT$_2$ with a time-dependent Hamiltonian. We perturb by operators with time-dependent source functions and use the replica trick to calculate higher order corrections to entanglement entropy. At first order, we compute the correction due to a metric perturbation in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ and find agreement on both sides of the duality. Past first order, we find evidence of a universal structure of entanglement propagation to all orders. The central feature is that interactions entangle unentangled excitations. Entanglement propagates according to "entanglement diagrams," proposed structures that are motivated by accessory spacetime diagrams for real-time perturbation theory. To illustrate the mechanisms involved, we compute higher-order corrections to free fermion entanglement entropy. We identify an unentangled operator, one which does not change the entanglement entropy to any order. Then, we introduce an interaction and find it changes entanglement entropy by entangling the unentangled excitations. The entanglement propagates in line with our conjecture. We compute several entanglement diagrams. We provide tools to simplify the computation of loop entanglement diagrams, which probe UV effects in entanglement propagation in CFT and holography.

Two-dimensional conformal field theories at large central charge and with a sufficiently sparse spectrum of light states have been shown to exhibit universal thermodynamics. This thermodynamics matches that of AdS$_3$ gravity, with a Hawking-Page transition between thermal AdS and the BTZ black hole. We extend these results to correlation functions of light operators. Upon making some additional assumptions, such as large $c$ factorization of correlators, we establish that the thermal AdS and BTZ solutions emerge as the universal backgrounds for the computation of correlators. In particular, Witten diagrams computed on these backgrounds yield the CFT correlators, order by order in a large $c$ expansion, with exponentially small corrections. In pure CFT terms, our result is that thermal correlators of light operators are determined entirely by light spectrum data. Our analysis is based on the constraints of modular invariance applied to the torus two-point function.

Localized unitary operators are basic probes of locality and causality in quantum systems: localized unitary operators create localized excitations in entangled states. Working with an explicit form, we explore the properties of these operators in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory. We show that, unlike unitary operators, local non-unitary operators generically create non-local excitations. We present a local picture for quantum systems in which localized experimentalists can only act through localized Hamiltonian deformations, and therefore localized unitary operators. We demonstrate that localized unitary operators model certain quantum quenches exactly. We show how the Reeh-Schlieder theorem follows intuitively from basic properties of entanglement, non-unitary operators, and the local picture. We show that a recent quasi-particle picture for excited-state entanglement entropy in conformal field theories is not universal for all local operators. We prove a causality relation for entanglement entropy and connect our results to the AdS/CFT correspondence.
