We show that a class of $L$-loop conformal ladder graphs correspond to twisted partition functions of free massive complex scalars in $d=2L+1$ dimensions. The graphs arise as four-point functions in certain two- and four-dimensional conformal fishnet models. The twisted thermal two-point function of the scalars is a generator of such conformal graphs for all loops. We argue that this correspondence is seeded by a system of two decoupled harmonic oscillators twisted by an imaginary chemical potential. We find a number of algebraic and differential relations among the conformal graphs which mirror the underlying free dynamics.

We comprehensively study Galilean and Carrollian hydrodynamics on arbitrary backgrounds, in the presence of a matter/charge conserved current. For this purpose, we follow two distinct and complementary paths. The first is based on local invariance, be it Galilean or Carrollian diffeomorphism invariance, possibly accompanied by Weyl invariance. The second consists in analyzing the relativistic fluid equations at large or small speed of light, after choosing an adapted gauge, ADM-Zermelo for the former and Papapetrou-Randers for the latter. Unsurprisingly, the results agree, but the second approach is superior as it effortlessly captures more elaborate situations with multiple degrees of freedom. It furthermore allows to investigate the fate of hydrodynamic-frame invariance in the two limits at hand, and conclude that its breaking (in the Galilean) or its preservation (in the Carrollian) are fragile consequences of the behaviour of transport attributes at large or small $c$. Both methods do also agree on the doom of Noetherian currents generated in the relativistic theory by isometries: non-trivial currents are not always guaranteed in Newton-Cartan or Carroll spacetimes as a consequence of Galilean or Carrollian isometries. Comparison of Galilean and Carrollian fluid equations exhibits a striking but often superficial resemblance, which we comment in relation to black-hole horizon dynamics, awkwardly akin to Navier-Stokes equations. This congruity is authentic in one instance though and turns out then to describe Aristotelian dynamics, which is the last item in our agenda.

I point out that the thermal one-point functions of a pair of relevant operators in massive free QFTs, in odd dimensions and in the presence of an imaginary chemical potential for a U(1) global charge, are given by certain classes of single-valued polylogarithms. This result is verified by a direct calculation using the thermal OPE. The complex argument of the polylogarithms parametrize a two-dimensional subspace of relevant deformations of generalised free CFTs, while the rank of the polylogarithms is related to the dimension d. This may be compared with the well-known representation of single-valued polylogarithms as multiloop Feynman amplitudes. As an example, the thermal one-point function of the U(1) charge in d-dimensions generalises the thermal average of the twist operator in a pair of harmonic oscillators and is given by the well-known conformal ladder graphs in four dimensions.

In this paper we consider aspects of the holographic interpretation of Taub-NUT-AdS$_4$. We review our earlier results which show that TNAdS$_4$ gives rise to a holographic three-dimensional conformal fluid having constant vorticity. We then study the holographic relevance of the Misner string by considering bulk scalar fluctuations. The scalar fluctuations organize naturally into representations of the $SU(2)\times \mathbb{R}$ isometry algebra. If we require the string's invisibility we obtain a Dirac-like quantization relating the frequency of the scalar field modes to the NUT charge. As the latter quantity determines the total vorticity flux of the boundary fluid, we argue that such an assumption allows for a holographic interpretation of TNAdS$_4$ as a {\it non-dissipative} superfluid whose excitations are quantized vortices. Alternatively, if we regard the Misner string as a physical object, as has recently been advocated for thermodynamically, the aforementioned quantization conditions are removed, and we find that TNAdS$_4$ corresponds to a holographic fluid whose dissipative properties are probed as usual by the complex quasinormal modes of the bulk fluctuations. We show that such quasinormal modes are, perhaps surprisingly, organized into infinite-dimensional non-unitary representations of the isometry algebra.

Torsion and nonmetricity are inherent ingredients in modifications of Eintein's gravity that are based on affine spacetime geometries. In the context of pure f(R) gravity we discuss here, in some detail, the relatively unnoticed duality between torsion and nonmetricity. In particular we show that for R2 gravity torsion and nonmetricity are related by projective transformations. Since the latter correspond simply to redefining the affine parameters of autoparallels, we conclude that torsion and nonmetricity are physically equivalent properties of spacetime. As a simple example we show that both torsion and nonmetricity can act as geometric sources of accelerated expansion in a spatially homogenous cosmological model within R2 gravity and we brie y discuss possible implications of our results.

We introduce and develop the 1+3 covariant approach to relativity and cosmology to spacetimes of arbitrary dimensions that have nonzero torsion and do not satisfy the metricity condition. Focusing on timelike observers, we identify and discuss the main differences between their kinematics and those of their counterparts living in standard Riemannian spacetimes. At the centre of our analysis lies the Raychaudhuri equation, which is the fundamental formula monitoring the convergence/divergence, namely the collapse/expansion, of timelike worldline congruences. To the best of our knowledge, we provide the most general expression so far of the Raychaudhuri equation, with applications to an extensive range of non-standard astrophysical and cosmological studies. Assuming that metricity holds, but allowing for nonzero torsion, we recover the results of analogous previous treatments. Focusing on non-metricity alone, we identify a host of effects that depend on the nature of the timelike congruence and on the type of the adopted non-metricity. We also demonstrate that in spaces of high symmetry one can recover the pure-torsion results from their pure non-metricity analogues, and vice-versa, via a simple ansatz between torsion and non-metricity.

We find that nontrivial thermal CFTs arise when the thermal mass satisfies an algebraic transcendental equation that ensures the absence of an infinite set of operators from the spectrum. The solutions of these gap equations for general odd dimensions are in general complex numbers and follow a particular pattern. We show that the three-dimensional map between fermions and bosons at finite temperature generalises for all odd dimensions $d>3$. We further argue that such a map has a nontrivial large $d$ limit. Evidence comes from studying the gap equations, the free energies and the partition functions of the $U(N)$ Gross-Neveu and CP$^{N-1}$ models for odd $d\geq 3$ in the presence of imaginary chemical potential. We find that the gap equations and the free energies can be written in terms of the Bloch-Wigner-Ramakrishnan $D_d(z)$ functions analysed by Zagier. Since $D_2(z)$ gives the volume of ideal tetrahedra in 3$d$ hyperbolic space our three-dimensional results are related to resent studies of complex Chern-Simons theories, while for $d>3$ they yield corresponding higher dimensional generalizations. As a spinoff, we observe that particular complex saddles of the partition functions correspond to the zeros and the extrema of the Clausen functions $Cl_d(θ)$ with odd and even index $d$ respectively. These saddles lie on the unit circle at positions remarkably well approximated by a sequence of rational multiples of $π$.

We show that a holographic description of four-dimensional asymptotically locally flat spacetimes is reached smoothly from the zero-cosmological-constant limit of anti-de Sitter holography. To this end, we use the derivative expansion of fluid/gravity correspondence. From the boundary perspective, the vanishing of the bulk cosmological constant appears as the zero velocity of light limit. This sets how Carrollian geometry emerges in flat holography. The new boundary data are a two-dimensional spatial surface, identified with the null infinity of the bulk Ricci-flat spacetime, accompanied with a Carrollian time and equipped with a Carrollian structure, plus the dynamical observables of a conformal Carrollian fluid. These are the energy, the viscous stress tensors and the heat currents, whereas the Carrollian geometry is gathered by a two-dimensional spatial metric, a frame connection and a scale factor. The reconstruction of Ricci-flat spacetimes from Carrollian boundary data is conducted with a flat derivative expansion, resummed in a closed form in Eddington-Finkelstein gauge under further integrability conditions inherited from the ancestor anti-de Sitter set-up. These conditions are hinged on a duality relationship among fluid friction tensors and Cotton-like geometric data. We illustrate these results in the case of conformal Carrollian perfect fluids and Robinson-Trautman viscous hydrodynamics. The former are dual to the asymptotically flat Kerr-Taub-NUT family, while the latter leads to the homonymous class of algebraically special Ricci-flat spacetimes.

We provide the set of equations for non-relativistic fluid dynamics on arbitrary, possibly time-dependent spaces, in general coordinates. These equations are fully covariant under either local Galilean or local Carrollian transformations, and are obtained from standard relativistic hydrodynamics in the limit of infinite or vanishing velocity of light. All dissipative phenomena such as friction and heat conduction are included in our description. Part of our work consists in designing the appropriate coordinate frames for relativistic spacetimes, invariant under Galilean or Carrollian diffeomorphisms. The guide for the former is the dynamics of relativistic point particles, and leads to the Zermelo frame. For the latter, the relevant objects are relativistic instantonic space-filling branes in Randers-Papapetrou backgrounds. We apply our results for obtaining the general first-derivative-order Galilean fluid equations, in particular for incompressible fluids (Navier-Stokes equations) and further illustrate our findings with two applications: Galilean fluids in rotating frames or inflating surfaces and Carrollian conformal fluids on two-dimensional time-dependent geometries. The first is useful in atmospheric physics, while the dynamics emerging in the second is governed by the Robinson-Trautman equation, describing a Calabi flow on the surface, and known to appear when solving Einstein's equations for algebraically special Ricci-flat or Einstein spacetimes.

We discuss the holographic reconstruction of four-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter Robinson-Trautman spacetime from boundary data. We use for that a resummed version of the derivative expansion. The latter involves a vector field, which is interpreted as the dual-holographic-fluid velocity field and is naturally defined in the Eckart frame. In this frame the analysis of the non-perfect holographic energy-momentum tensor is considerably simplified. The Robinson-Trautman fluid is at rest and its time evolution is a heat-diffusion kind of phenomenon: the Robinson-Trautman equation plays the rôle of heat equation, and the heat current is identified with the gradient of the extrinsic curvature of the two-dimensional boundary spatial section hosting the conformal fluid, interpreted as an out-of-equilibrium kinematical temperature. The hydrodynamic-frame-independent entropy current is conserved for vanishing chemical potential, and the evolution of the fluid resembles a Moutier thermodynamic path. We finally comment on the general transformation rules for moving to the Landau-Lifshitz frame, and on possible drawbacks of this option.

We describe in detail the method used in our previous work arXiv:1611.10344 to study the Wilson-Fisher critical points nearby generalized free CFTs, exploiting the analytic structure of conformal blocks as functions of the conformal dimension of the exchanged operator. Our method is equivalent to the mechanism of conformal multiplet recombination set up by null states. We compute, to the first non-trivial order in the $ε$-expansion, the anomalous dimensions and the OPE coefficients of infinite classes of scalar local operators using just CFT data. We study single-scalar and $O(N)$-invariant theories, as well as theories with multiple deformations. When available we agree with older results, but we also produce a wealth of new ones. Unitarity and crossing symmetry are not used in our approach and we are able to apply our method to non-unitary theories as well. Some implications of our results for the study of the non-unitary theories containing partially conserved higher-spin currents are briefly mentioned.

The two results agree provided the corresponding instanton moduli as well as the curvature radii are analytically continued. The instanton solutions in de Sitter are novel and satisfy mixed boundary conditions. We also point out that instantons on $S^4$ calculate the regularized volume of EAdS$_4$, while instantons on EAdS$_4$ calculate the volume of $S^4$, where the boundary condition of the instanton in one space is identified with the radius of curvature of the other. We investigate background metrics for 2+1-dimensional holographic theories where the equilibrium solution behaves as a perfect fluid, and admits thus a thermodynamic description. We introduce stationary perfect-Cotton geometries, where the Cotton--York tensor takes the form of the energy--momentum tensor of a perfect fluid, i.e. they are of Petrov type D_t. Fluids in equilibrium in such boundary geometries have non-trivial vorticity. The corresponding bulk can be exactly reconstructed to obtain 3+1-dimensional stationary black-hole solutions with no naked singularities for appropriate values of the black-hole mass. It follows that an infinite number of transport coefficients vanish for holographic fluids. Our results imply an intimate relationship between black-hole uniqueness and holographic perfect equilibrium. In view of the recent interest in reproducing holographically various properties of conformal fluids, we review the issue of vorticity in the context of AdS/CFT. Three-dimensional fluids with vorticity require four-dimensional bulk geometries with either angular momentum or nut charge, whose boundary geometries fall into the Papapetrou--Randers class. The boundary fluids emerge in stationary non-dissipative kinematic configurations, which can be cyclonic or vortex flows, evolving in compact or non-compact supports. A rich network of Einstein's solutions arises, naturally connected with three-dimensional Bianchi spaces. We use Fefferman--Graham expansion to handle holographic data from the bulk and discuss the alternative for reversing the process and reconstruct the exact bulk geometries.

We study holographic three-dimensional fluids with vorticity in local equilibrium and discuss their relevance to analogue gravity systems. The Fefferman-Graham expansion leads to the fluid's description in terms of a comoving and rotating Papapetrou-Randers frame. A suitable Lorentz transformation brings the fluid to the non-inertial Zermelo frame, which clarifies its interpretation as moving media for light/sound propagation. We apply our general results to the Lorentzian Kerr-AdS_4 and Taub-NUT-AdS_4 geometries that describe fluids in cyclonic and vortex flows respectively. In the latter case we associate the appearance of closed timelike curves to analogue optical horizons. In addition, we derive the classical rotational Hall viscosity of three-dimensional fluids with vorticity. Our formula remarkably resembles the corresponding result in magnetized plasmas.

Here we note that Taub--NUT--AdS4 geometries give rise to a rotating fluid with vortex flow. The Randers and Zermelo forms of the boundary metrics provide alternative descriptions of the fluid by inertial co-moving or by accelerated observers. Such fluids possess acoustic horizons. Moreover, light propagation on the boundary Taub--NUT fluid will encounter an optical horizon associated with closed timelike curves. In the latter case the Misner string introduces a multi-valuedness of the scalar fluctuations which can be attributed to the anyonic nature of the boundary vortex.

We study four dimensional gravity with a negative cosmological constant deformed by the Nieh-Yan torsional topological invariant with a spacetime-dependent coefficient. We find an exact solution of the Euclidean system, which we call the torsion vortex, having two asymptotic AdS4 regimes supported by a pseudoscalar with a kink profile. We propose that the torsion vortex is the holographic dual of a three dimensional system that exhibits distinct parity breaking vacua. The torsion vortex represents a (holographic) transition between these distinct vacua. We expect that from the boundary point of view, the torsion vortex represents a `domain wall' between the two distinct vacua.
From a bulk point of view, we point out an intriguing identification of the parameters of the torsion vortex with those of an Abrikosov vortex in a Type I superconductor. Following the analogy, we find that external Kalb-Ramond flux then appears to support bubbles of flat spacetime within an asymptotically AdS geometry.

For Euclidean self-dual configurations, the relationship between their boundary initial positions and initial velocity is also determined by the three-dimensional gravitational Chern-Simons. Our results imply that bulk self-dual configurations are holographically described by the gravitational Chern-Simons theory which can either viewed as a boundary generating functional or as a boundary effective action.

We apply a recently presented BRST procedure to construct the Largangian cubic vertex of higher-spin gauge field triplets interacting with massive free scalars. In flat space, the spin-s triplet propagates the series of irreducible spin-s, s-2,..,0/1 modes which couple independently to corresponding conserved currents constructed from the scalars. The simple covariantization of the flat space result is not enough in AdS, as new interaction vertices appear. We present in detail the cases of spin-2 and spin-3 triplets coupled to scalars. Restricting to a single irreducible spin-s mode we uncover previously obtained results. We also present an alternative derivation of the lower spin results based on the idea that higher-spin gauge fields arise from the gauging of higher derivative symmetries of free matter Lagrangians. Our results can be readily applied to holographic studies of higher-spin gauge theories.

We show that a scalar field conformally coupled to AdS gravity in four dimensions with a quartic self-interaction can be embedded into M-theory. The holographic effective potential is exactly calculated, allowing us to study non-perturbatively the stability of AdS_4 in the presence of the conformally coupled scalar. It is shown that there exists a one-parameter family of conformal scalar boundary conditions for which the boundary theory has an unstable vacuum. In this case, the bulk theory has instanton solutions that mediate the decay of the AdS_4 space. These results match nicely with the vacuum structure and the existence of instantons in an effective three-dimensional boundary model.

We propose a method of construction of a cubic interaction in massless Higher Spin gauge theory both in flat and in AdS space-times of arbitrary dimensions. We consider a triplet formulation of the Higher Spin gauge theory and generalize the Higher Spin symmetry algebra of the free model to the corresponding algebra for the case of cubic interaction. The generators of this new algebra carry indexes which label the three Higher Spin fields involved into the cubic interaction. The method is based on the use of oscillator formalism and on the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) technique. We derive general conditions on the form of cubic interaction vertex and discuss the ambiguities of the vertex which result from field redefinitions. This method can in principle be applied for constructing the Higher Spin interaction vertex at any order. Our results are a first step towards the construction of a Lagrangian for interacting Higher Spin gauge fields that can be holographically studied.

We study a subsector of the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence where a class of solutions in the bulk and on the boundary can be explicitly compared. The bulk gravitational theory contains a conformally coupled scalar field with a Phi^4 potential, and is holographically related to a massless scalar with a Phi^6 interaction in three dimensions. We consider the scalar sector of the bulk theory and match bulk and boundary classical solutions of the equations of motion. Of particular interest is the matching of the bulk and the boundary instanton solutions which underlies the relationship between bulk and boundary vacua with broken conformal invariance. Using a form of radial quantization we show that quantum states in the bulk correspond to multiply-occupied single particle quantum states in the boundary theory. This allows us to explicitly identify the boundary composite operator which is dual to the bulk scalar, at the free theory level as well as in the instanton vacuum. We conclude with a discussion of possible implications of our results.

We point out a non-trivial connection between the model proposed by Horava and Keeler as a candidate for noncritical M-theory and the Gross-Neveu model with fermionic fields obeying periodic boundary conditions in 2+1 dimensions. Specifically, the vacuum energy of the former is identified with the large-N free-energy of the latter up to an overall constant. This identification involves an appropriate analytic continuation of the subtraction point in noncritical M-theory, which is related to the volume of the Liouville dimension. We show how the world-sheet cosmological constant may be obtained from the Gross-Neveu model. At its critical point, which is given in terms of the golden mean, the values of the vacuum energy and of the cosmological constant are 4/5 and 2/5 of the corresponding values at infinite string coupling constant.

We study a class of non-protected local composite operators which occur in the R symmetry singlet channel of the OPE of two stress-tensor multiplets in {\cal N}=4 SYM. At tree level these are quadrilinear scalar dimension four operators, two single-traces and two double-traces. In the presence of interaction, due to a non-trivial mixing under renormalization, they split into linear combinations of conformally covariant operators. We resolve the mixing by computing the one-loop two-point functions of all the operators in an {\cal N}=1 setup, then diagonalizing the anomalous dimension matrix and identifying the quasiprimary operators. We find one operator whose anomalous dimension is negative and suppressed by a factor of 1/N^2 with respect to the anomalous dimensions of the Konishi-like operators. We reveal the mechanism responsible for this suppression and argue that it works at every order in perturbation theory. In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence such an operator should be dual to a multiparticle supergravity state whose energy is less than the sum of the corresponding individual single-particle states.

The energy and the spin of the orbiting string configurations are associated with the energy and the spin of states in the dual finite temperature N=4 SYM theory. We analyse in particular the limiting cases of short and long strings. Moreover, we perform a thermodynamic study of the angular momentum transfer from the glueball to the plasma by considering string orbits around rotating AdS black holes. We study branes moving in an AdS Schwarzschild black hole background. When the brane tension exceeds a critical value, the induced metric on the brane is of FRW type and asymptotically de Sitter. We discuss the relevance of such configurations to dS/CFT correspondence. When the black hole mass reaches a critical value that depends on the brane tension, the brane interpolates in the infinite past and future between a dS space and a finite space of zero Hubble constant. This corresponds to a cosmological evolution without a Big Bang or a Big Crunch. Moreover, the central charge of the CFT dual to the dS brane enters the Cardy-Verlinde formula that gives the entropy of the thermal CFT dual to the bulk AdS black hole.

Abstract:
We argue that the thermodynamics of conformal field theories with AdS duals exhibits a remarkable universality. We argue that the thermodynamics of conformal field theories with AdS duals exhibits a remarkable universality. At strong coupling, a Cardy-Verlinde entropy formula holds even when R-charges or bulk supergravity scalars are turned on. In such a setting, the Casimir entropy can be identified with a generalized C-function that changes monotonically with temperature as well as when non-trivial bulk scalar fields are introduced. We generalize the Cardy-Verlinde formula to cases where no subextensive part of the energy is present and further observe that such a formula is valid for the N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in D=4 even at weak coupling. Finally we show that a generalized Cardy-Verlinde formula holds for asymptotically flat black holes in any dimension.

Abstract:
We show that certain classes of apparently unprotected operators in N=4 SYM_4 do not receive quantum corrections as a consequence of a partial non-renormalization theorem for the 4-point function of chiral primary operators. We develop techniques yielding the asymptotic expansion of the 4-point function of CPOs up to order O(λ^2) and we perform a detailed OPE analysis. Our results reveal the exi…

Our results reveal the existence of new non-renormalized operators of approximate dimension 6.

Abstract:
We study the ratio of the entropy to the total energy in conformal field theories at finite temperature. For the free field realizations of {\cal N}=4 super Yang-Mills theory in D=4 and the (2,0) tensor multiplet in D=6, the ratio is bounded from above. The corresponding bounds are less stringent than the recently proposed Verlinde bound. We show that entropy bounds arise generically in CFTs in…

We show that entropy bounds arise generically in CFTs in connection to monotonicity properties with respect to temperature changes of a generalized C-function. For strongly coupled CFTs with AdS duals, we show that the ratio obeys the Verlinde bound even in the presence of rotation. For such CFTs, we point out an intriguing resemblance in their thermodynamic formulas with the corresponding ones of two-dimensional CFTs. We show that simple scaling forms for the free energy and entropy of CFTs with AdS duals reproduce the thermodynamical properties of (D+1)-dimensional AdS black holes.
