We discuss two physics-inspired approaches to derivation of the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of $A_N$ Ruijsenaars-Schneider model. First approach which was recently proposed by the authors relies on the computations of superconformal indices of class $\mathcal{S}$ $4d$ ${\mathcal N}=2$ theories with the insertion of surface defects. Second approach uses computations of Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of $5d$ ${\mathcal N} = 1^*$ instanton partition functions in the presence of co-dimension two defect. We compare results of these two approaches for the low-lying levels of Ruijsenaars-Schneider model. We also discuss different previously proposed exact quantization conditions for the Coulomb branch parameters of the instanton partition functions and their interpretations in terms of index calculations.

We propose new constraints for 6d (1, 0) supergravity theories based on consistency conditions on the Kahler moduli spaces of their 5d reductions. The requirement that both the metric and the BPS string tensions in the Kahler moduli space are positive imposes specific restrictions on the Chern-Simons coefficients in the 5d effective Lagrangians that are derived from the Kaluza-Klein reductions of 6d theories. Moreover, the emergence of local interacting 5d CFTs when the moduli space metric degenerates introduces additional constraints coming from the analysis of 5d SCFTs. Focusing on the moduli spaces of 6d supergravity theories without a tensor multiplet and their Higgsings, we show that these constraints require the presence of certain primary states in the 2d worldvolume CFTs on 1/2 BPS strings. We specifically analyze a class of SU(2) models and infinite families of U(1) models using these constraints, and demonstrate that the theories featuring a 1-form symmetry in their massless spectra, unless the 1-form symmetry is gauged, fail to satisfy the constraints and therefore belong to the Swampland.

We prove the conjectured classification of topological phases in two spatial dimensions with gappable boundary, in a simplified setting. Two gapped ground states of lattice Hamiltonians are in the same quantum phase of matter, or topological phase, if they can be connected by a constant-depth quantum circuit. It is conjectured that the Levin-Wen string-net models exhaust all possible gapped phases with gappable boundary, and these phases are labeled by unitary modular tensor categories. We prove this under the assumption that every phase has a representative state with zero correlation length satisfying the entanglement bootstrap axioms, or a strict form of area law. Our main technical development is to transform these states into string-net states using constant-depth quantum circuits.

By applying the braneworld model, we investigate the time evolution of two-point functions holographically in expanding universes. In order to explain the FLRW cosmologies, we take into account a $p$-brane gas geometry. When we take the boundary of a $p$-brane gas geometry as the braneworld we are living in, $p$-branes are detected as $(p-1)$-dimensional objects to an observer living in the braneworld. These objects lead to the FLRW cosmology which is related to the radial motion of the braneworld in the $p$-brane gas geometry. Utilizing this $p$-brane gas geometry, we investigate the time-dependent two-point functions of FLRW cosmologies. For $p=4$, we reproduce the known two-point functions of the dS space and find a new analytic two-point function for $p=2$ which corresponds to an expanding universe with uniformly distributed cosmic strings. Moreover, we show that the two-point function suppresses in the late time era with a specific power that is associated with the equation of state parameter of the uniformly distributed matter.

Asymptotic observables in quantum field theory beyond the familiar $S$-matrix have recently attracted much interest, for instance in the context of gravity waveforms. Such observables can be understood in terms of Schwinger-Keldysh-type 'amplitudes' computed by a set of modified Feynman rules involving cut internal legs and external legs labelled by time-folds.
In parallel, a homotopy-algebraic understanding of perturbative quantum field theory has emerged in recent years. In particular, passing through homotopy transfer, the $S$-matrix of a perturbative quantum field theory can be understood as the minimal model of an associated (quantum) $L_\infty$-algebra.
Here we bring these two developments together. In particular, we show that Schwinger-Keldysh amplitudes are naturally encoded in an $L_\infty$-algebra, similar to ordinary scattering amplitudes. As before, they are computed via homotopy transfer, but using deformation-retract data that are not canonical (in contrast to the conventional $S$-matrix). We further show that the $L_\infty$-algebras encoding Schwinger-Keldysh amplitudes and ordinary amplitudes are quasi-isomorphic (meaning, in a suitable sense, equivalent). This entails a set of recursion relations that enable one to compute Schwinger-Keldysh amplitudes in terms of ordinary amplitudes or vice versa.

In a physical system with conformal symmetry, observables depend on cross-ratios, measures of distance invariant under global conformal transformations (conformal geometry for short). We identify a quantum information-theoretic mechanism by which the conformal geometry emerges at the gapless edge of a 2+1D quantum many-body system with a bulk energy gap. We introduce a novel pair of information-theoretic quantities $(\mathfrak{c}_{\mathrm{tot}}, η)$ that can be defined locally on the edge from the wavefunction of the many-body system, without prior knowledge of any distance measure. We posit that, for a topological groundstate, the quantity $\mathfrak{c}_{\mathrm{tot}}$ is stationary under arbitrary variations of the quantum state, and study the logical consequences. We show that stationarity, modulo an entanglement-based assumption about the bulk, implies (i) $\mathfrak{c}_{\mathrm{tot}}$ is a non-negative constant that can be interpreted as the total central charge of the edge theory. (ii) $η$ is a cross-ratio, obeying the full set of mathematical consistency rules, which further indicates the existence of a distance measure of the edge with global conformal invariance. Thus, the conformal geometry emerges from a simple assumption on groundstate entanglement.
We show that stationarity of $\mathfrak{c}_{\mathrm{tot}}$ is equivalent to a vector fixed-point equation involving $η$, making our assumption locally checkable. We also derive similar results for 1+1D systems under a suitable set of assumptions.

We derive an emergent holographic dual description for an SYK model, where the renormalization group (RG) flows of collective bi-local fields appear manifestly in the bulk effective action with an emergent extradimension. This holographic dual effective field theory reproduces $1/N$ quantum corrections given by the Schwarzian action when we take the UV limit in the bulk effective action. Going into the IR regime in the extradimension, we observe that the field theoretic $1/N$, $1/N^{2}$, ... quantum corrections are resummed in the all-loop order and reorganized to form a holographic dual effective field theory in a large $N$ fashion living on the one-higher dimensional spacetime. Taking the large $N$ limit in the holographic dual effective field theory, we obtain nonlinearly coupled second-order bulk differential equations of motion for the three bi-local order-parameter fields of fermion self-energy, Green's function, and polarization function. Here, both UV and IR boundary conditions are derived self-consistently from the boundary effective action. We solve these highly intertwined nonlinear differential equations based on the so called matching method. Our ansatz for the bi-local order-parameter fields coincide with the conformally invariant solution of the field theoretic large $N$ limit in the UV limit, but their overall coefficients RG-flow along the extradimensional space, respectively, reflecting effects of higher-order quantum corrections. As a result, we find an insulating behavior, where the self-energy diverges at IR. To confirm this insulating physics, we investigate thermodynamics. We obtain an effective free energy functional in terms of such bi-local dual order-parameter fields, which satisfy the Hamilton-Jacobi equation of the holographic dual effective field theory. ...

The implications of these conditions include: i) Heat contributes to the energy density through the combination $q/nΘ^2$ where $q$, $n$, and $Θ$ represent heat, the number density, and the temperature, respectively. ii) The energy density has a unique minimum at $q=0$. iii) The temperature upper bound suppresses the heat dependence of the energy density inverse quadratically. This is a recently introduced class of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SCFTs that by definition have zero-dimensional Higgs and Coulomb branches. We briefly explain why it is reasonable to obtain rational VOAs at the boundary of their topological twists. When a rank-0 SCFT is realized as the IR fixed point of a $\mathcal{N}=2$ Lagrangian theory, we propose a technique for the explicit construction of its topological twists and boundary VOAs based on deformations of the holomorphic-topological twist of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ microscopic description. We apply this technique to the $B$ twist of a newly discovered family of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ rank-0 SCFTs ${\mathcal T}_r$ and argue that they admit the simple affine VOAs $L_r(\mathfrak{osp}(1|2))$ at their boundary. In the simplest case, this leads to a novel level-rank duality between $L_1(\mathfrak{osp}(1|2))$ and the minimal model $M(2,5)$. As a by product, the $λ$ deformed bosonic $W_{1+\infty}[λ] \times W_{1+\infty}[λ+\frac{1}{2}]$ subalgebra (a generalization of Pope, Romans and Shen's work in $1990$) is obtained. The first factor is realized by $(b,c)$ fermionic fields while the second factor is realized by $(β,γ)$ bosonic fields. The degrees of the polynomials in $λ$ for the structure constants are given by $(h_1+h_2-2)$. Each $w_{1+\infty}$ algebra from the celestial holography is reproduced by taking the vanishing limit of other deformation prameter $q$ at $λ=0$ with the contractions of the currents.

Both actions live on twistor space and illustrate nicely the homotopy algebraic perspective on the double copy presented in arXiv:2307.02563. This example is particularly interesting as the involved Hopf algebra controlling the momentum dependence is non-commutative and suggests a generalisation to gauged maximally supersymmetric self-dual gravity.

We propose two novel methods for computing the superconformal index of 5d superconformal field theories that cannot be described by conventional Lagrangian descriptions under mass deformations. The first approach involves the use of Higgs branch flows from UV Lagrangian theories, guided by transitions in 5-brane webs in Type IIB string theory. The second method employs the relationship between O$7^+$-plane and O$7^-$-plane with eight D7-branes, which applies to particular non-Lagrangian theories realized by brane configurations involving an O$7^+$-plane. As a concrete application of our method, we compute the superconformal indices for all known rank-1 non-Lagrangian theories, which we also use to identify flavor symmetries and their global forms at the conformal field theory (CFT) fixed points.

Field theories with kinematic Lie algebras, such as field theories featuring colour-kinematics duality, possess an underlying algebraic structure known as BV${}^{\color{gray} \blacksquare}$-algebra. If, additionally, matter fields are present, this structure is supplemented by a module for the BV${}^{\color{gray} \blacksquare}$-algebra. We explain this perspective, expanding on our previous work and providing many additional mathematical details. We also show how the tensor product of two metric BV${}^{\color{gray} \blacksquare}$-algebras yields the action of a new syngamy field theory, a construction which comprises the familiar double copy construction. As examples, we discuss various scalar field theories, Chern-Simons theory, self-dual Yang-Mills theory, and the pure spinor formulations of both M2-brane models and supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The latter leads to a new cubic pure spinor action for ten-dimensional supergravity. We also give a homotopy-algebraic perspective on colour-flavour-strip**, obtain a new restricted tensor product over a wide class of bialgebras, and we show that any field theory (even one without colour-kinematics duality) comes with a kinematic $L_\infty$-algebra.

We study the charges and first law of thermodynamics for accelerating, non-rotating black holes with dyonic charges in AdS$_4$ using the covariant phase space formalism. In order to apply the formalism to these solutions (which are asymptotically locally AdS and admit a non-smooth conformal boundary $\mathscr{I}$) we make two key improvements: 1) We relax the requirement to impose Dirichlet boundary conditions and demand merely a well-posed variational problem. 2) We keep careful track of the codimension-2 corner term induced by the holographic counterterms, a necessary requirement due to the presence of "cosmic strings" piercing $\mathscr{I}$. Using these improvements we are able to match the holographic Noether charges to the Wald Hamiltonians of the covariant phase space and derive the first law of black hole thermodynamics with the correct "thermodynamic length" terms arising from the strings. We investigate the relationship between the charges imposed by supersymmetry and show that our first law can be consistently applied to various classes of non-supersymmetric solutions for which the cross-sections of the horizon are spindles.

The presence of dark matter overdensities surrounding a black hole can influence the evolution of a binary system. The gravitational wave signals emitted by a black hole binary offer a promising means to probe the dark matter environments near a black hole. The dense region of dark matter can lead to the dephasing of gravitational waveforms, which can be detected by upcoming experiments such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). The dark matter density profile around the black hole can vary for different dark matter models. Our study specifically investigates the impact of the ultralight self-interacting scalar dark matter (SIDM) on the gravitational wave signals emitted by black hole binaries. A distinctive characteristic of SIDM surrounding a black hole, as opposed to collisionless dark matter, is the formation of a soliton core. We perform a Fisher matrix analysis to estimate the size of the soliton and the corresponding SIDM parameter space that future LISA-like gravitational wave experiments can explore.

This PhD thesis investigates several aspects of nonabelian higher gauge theories, which appear in many areas of physics, notably string theory and gauged supergravity. We show that nonabelian higher gauge theory admits a consistent classical nonperturbative formulation insofar as a higher nonabelian parallel transport exists consistently, without requiring certain curvature components (fake curvature) to vanish. Next, we explore examples of nonabelian higher gauge theories that naturally appear in high-energy physics. Using a generalisation of $L_\infty$-algebras called $E_2L_\infty$-algebras, we show that tensor hierarchies of gauged supergravity naturally admit a formulation in terms of higher nonabelian gauge theories. Furthermore, toroidal compactifications of string theory exhibiting T-duality also naturally contain higher gauge symmetry, which explain several features of nongeometric compactifications (Q- and R-fluxes). Based on the papers arXiv:1911.06390, arXiv:2106.00108, and arXiv:2204.01783 coauthored with Christian Saemann and Leron Borsten.

We provide a pedagogical introduction to the theory of principal 2-bundles with adjusted connections and show how they enter the description of geometric and non-geometric T-dualities as proposed in arXiv:2204.01783. This description combines the torus fibrations as well as the gerbe containing the Kalb-Ramond $B$-field into a single geometric object, a particular case of a non-abelian gerbe. The $B$-field and the metric are encoded in the connection of this categorified principal bundle, and a T-duality is described as a particular span or correspondence of such bundles. The formalism is manifestly covariant under the full T-duality group, and it readily reproduces key examples from the literature.

We prove that the tree-level scattering amplitudes for (super) Yang-Mills theory in arbitrary dimensions and for M2-brane models exhibit color-kinematics (CK) duality. Our proof for Yang-Mills theory substantially simplifies existing ones in that it relies on the action alone and does not involve any computation; the proof for M2-brane models establishes this result for the first time. Explicitly, we combine the facts that Chern-Simons-type theories naturally come with a kinematic Lie algebra and that both Yang-Mills theory and M2-brane models are of Chern-Simons form when formulated in pure spinor space, extending previous work on Yang-Mills currents arXiv:2108.11708. Our formulation also provides explicit kinematic Lie algebras for the theories under consideration in the form of diffeomorphisms on pure spinor space. The pure spinor formulation of CK-duality is based on ordinary, cubic vertices, but we explain how ordinary CK-duality relates to notions of quartic-vertex 3-Lie algebra CK-duality for M2-brane models previously discussed in the literature.

We investigate the steady state of heat conduction in general relativity using a variational approach for two-fluid dynamics. We adopt coordinates based on the Landau-Lifschitz observer because it allows us to describe thermodynamics with heat, formulated in the Eckart decomposition, on a static geometry. Through our analysis, we demonstrate that the stability condition of a thermal equilibrium state arises from the fundamental principle that heat cannot propagate faster than the speed of light. We then formulate the equations governing steady-state heat conduction and introduce a binormal equilibrium condition that the Tolman temperature gradient holds for the directions orthogonal to the heat flow. As an example, we consider radial heat conductions in a spherically symmetric spacetime. We find that the total diffusion over a spherical surface satisfies a red-shifted form, $J(r) \sqrt{-g_{tt}} =$ constant. We also discuss the behavior of local temperature around an event horizon and specify the condition that the local temperature is finite there.

When a magnetic moment is embedded in a metal, it captures itinerant electrons to form the Kondo cloud1,2, which can spread out over a few micrometres3,4. For a metal with dense magnetic impurities such that Kondo clouds overlap with each other, correlated ground states are formed. When the impurities form a regular lattice, the result is a heavy fermion or anti-ferromagnetic order depending on the dominant interaction5,6. Even in the case of random impurities, overlap** Kondo clouds are expected to form a coherent ground state. Here, we examine this issue by performing electrical transport and high-precision tunnelling density-of-states (DOS) spectroscopy measurements in a highly P-doped crystalline silicon metal where disorder-induced localized magnetic moments exist7. We detect the Kondo effect in the resistivity of the Si metal below 2 K and an exotic pseudogap in the DOS with gap edge peaks at a Fermi energy below 100 mK. The DOS gap and peaks are tuned by applying an external magnetic field and transformed into a metallic Altshuler-Aronov gap8 in the paramagnetic disordered Fermi liquid (DFL) phase. We interpret this phenomenon as the Kondo condensation, the formation of a correlated ground state of overlap** Kondo clouds, and its transition to a DFL. The boundary between the Kondo condensation and DFL phases is identified by analysing distinct DOS spectra in the magnetic field-temperature plane. A detailed theoretical analysis using a holographic method 9 , 10 , 11 reproduces the unusual DOS spectra, 1, supporting our scenario. Our work demonstrates the observation of the magnetic version of Bardeen-Cooper-Shrieffer (BCS) pair condensation and will be useful for understanding complex Kondo systems.

Recently, Akers et al. proposed a non-isometric holographic map from the interior of a black hole to its exterior. Within this model, we study properties of the black hole $S$-matrix, which are in principle accessible to observers who stay outside the black hole. Specifically, we investigate a scenario in which an infalling agent interacts with radiation both outside and inside the black hole. Because the holographic map involves postselection, the unitarity of the $S$-matrix is not guaranteed in this scenario, but we find that unitarity is satisfied to very high precision if suitable conditions are met. If the internal black hole dynamics is described by a pseudorandom unitary transformation, and if the operations performed by the infaller have computational complexity scaling polynomially with the black hole entropy, then the $S$-matrix is unitary up to corrections that are superpolynomially small in the black hole entropy. Furthermore, while in principle quantum computation assisted by postselection can be very powerful, we find under similar assumptions that the $S$-matrix of an evaporating black hole has polynomial computational complexity.

We analyze theories with color-kinematics duality from an algebraic perspective and find that any such theory has an underlying BV${}^{\color{gray} \blacksquare}$-algebra structure, extending the ideas of arXiv:1912.03110. Conversely, we show that any theory with a BV${}^{\color{gray} \blacksquare}$-algebra features a kinematic Lie algebra that controls interaction vertices, both on- and off-shell. We explain that the archetypal example of a theory with BV${}^{\color{gray} \blacksquare}$-algebra is Chern-Simons theory, for which the resulting kinematic Lie algebra is isomorphic to the Schouten-Nijenhuis algebra on multivector fields. The BV${}^{\color{gray} \blacksquare}$-algebra implies the known color-kinematics duality of Chern-Simons theory. Similarly, we show that holomorphic and Cauchy-Riemann (CR) Chern-Simons theories come with BV${}^{\color{gray} \blacksquare}$-algebras and that, on the appropriate twistor spaces, these theories organize and identify kinematic Lie algebras for self-dual and full Yang-Mills theories, as well as the currents of any field theory with a twistorial description. We show that this result extends to the loop level under certain assumptions.

Using our consistent truncation we uplift known AdS$_2\times Σ_1$ solutions giving rise to four-dimensional orbifold solutions, AdS$_2\timesΣ_1\ltimesΣ_2$. We further uplift our solutions to massive type IIA supergravity by constructing the full uplift formulae for six-dimensional U$(1)^2$-gauged supergravity including all fields and arbitrary Romans mass and gauge coupling. The solutions we construct are naturally interpreted as the near-horizon geometries of asymptotically AdS$_6$ black holes with a four-dimensional orbifold horizon. We investigate interacting disordered zigzag nanoribbons at low do**, using the Hubbard model to treat electron interactions within the density matrix renormalization group and Hartree-Fock method. Extra electrons that are inserted into an interacting disordered zigzag nanoribbon divide into anyons. Furthermore, the fractional charges form a new disordered anyon phase with a highly distorted edge spin density wave, containing numerous localized magnetic moments residing on the zigzag edges, thereby displaying spin-charge separation and a strong non-local correlation between the opposite zigzag edges. We make the following new predictions, which can be experimentally tested: (1) In the low do** case and weak disorder regime, the soft gap in the tunneling density of states is replaced by a sharp peak at the midgap energy with two accompanying peaks. The $e^-/2$ fractional charges that reside on the boundary of the zigzag edges are responsible for these peaks. (2) We find that the midgap peak disappears as the do** concentration increases. The presence of $e-/2$ fractional charges will be strongly supported by the detection of these peaks. Doped zigzag ribbons may also exhibit unusual transport, magnetic, and inter-edge tunneling properties.

We study the IR phases of 3D class R theories associated with closed non-hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Non-hyperbolic 3-manifolds can be obtained by performing Dehn fillings on 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds along exceptional slopes. In 3D-3D correspondence, the `exceptional' Dehn filling corresponds to the gauging of an $SU(2)$ flavor symmetry in a superconformal field theory associated with a 1-cusped 3-manifold with `small' Chern-Simons levels. With several explicit examples, we analyze various interesting non-perturbative IR phenomena (such as spontaneous SUSY breaking, generation of mass gap and supersymmetry enhancement) from the `exceptional' gaugings. Interestingly, distinguished features of the IR phases can be captured by simple topological properties of non-hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We also find that 3D class R theories associated with certain classes of atoroidal non-hyperbolic 3-manifolds always exhibit supersymmetry enhancement at low energy and actually flow to 3D rank-0 $\mathcal{N}=4$ SCFTs with trivial vacuum moduli space.

The modular commutator is a recently discovered multipartite entanglement measure that quantifies the chirality of the underlying many-body quantum state. In this Letter, we derive a universal expression for the modular commutator in conformal field theories in $1+1$ dimensions and discuss its salient features. We show that the modular commutator depends only on the chiral central charge and the conformal cross ratio. We test this formula for a gapped $(2+1)$-dimensional system with a chiral edge, i.e., the quantum Hall state, and observe excellent agreement with numerical simulations. Furthermore, we propose a geometric dual for the modular commutator in certain preferred states of the AdS/CFT correspondence. For these states, we argue that the modular commutator can be obtained from a set of crossing angles between intersecting Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces.

The solutions generalise the solutions corresponding to M5-branes wrapped on a disc recently constructed by Bah-Bonetti-Minasian-Nardoni by allowing for a general choice of regular puncture. We show that the central charges, flavour central charges and conformal dimensions of BPS operators match with a class of Argyres-Douglas theory.

We describe T-duality between general geometric and non-geometric backgrounds as higher groupoid bundles with connections. Our description extends the previous observation by Nikolaus and Waldorf that the topological aspects of geometric and half-geometric T-dualities can be described in terms of higher geometry. We extend their construction in two ways. First, we endow the higher geometries with adjusted connections, which allow us to discuss explicit formulas for the metric and the Kalb-Ramond field of a T-background. Second, we extend the principal 2-bundles to augmented 2-groupoid bundles, which accommodate the scalar fields arising in T-duality along several directions as well as $Q$- and $R$-fluxes. Our description is manifestly covariant under the full T-duality group $\mathsf{GO}(n,n;\mathbb{Z})$, and it has interesting physical and mathematical implications.

Abstract:
We explore the $\mathbb{Z}_{2,3,4,6}$ S-foldings of some 5d superconformal field theories from the $(p,q)$ 5-brane web perspective. The S-folding involves both a spatial quotient and an $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ transformation on 5-branes simultaneously. The $\mathbb{Z}_{2,3,4,6}$ S-foldings are achieved by the insertion of the $D_4, E_6, E_7, E_8$ 7-branes, respectively. The deficit angles and…

The $\mathbb{Z}_{2,3,4,6}$ S-foldings are achieved by the insertion of the $D_4, E_6, E_7, E_8$ 7-branes, respectively. The deficit angles and monodromies of these 7-branes are exactly those necessary for the S-foldings. We explore the details of the S-folding process, especially the enhancement of global flavor symmetry in various simple cases. The characteristic of the S-folding depends sharply on whether the fixed point of the discrete symmetry is at the center of a compact face (or surface), at a 5-brane, or at a crossing point of 5 branes. The analysis of the prepotential greatly supports this view of the discrete gauging.

Abstract:
We study a rotating black hole with anisotropic matter and electromagnetic fields. We show that the electromagnetic field has the same form as the corresponding one in the Kerr-Newman geometry. The reason is thanks to the specific form of the metric function. We also mention energy extraction mechanisms from the black hole.

The codimension 2 and 4 defects are engineered by coupling the 6d gauge fields to charged free fields in four and two dimensions, respectively. We find that the partition function in the presence of the codimension 2 defect on $\mathbb{R}^4\times \mathbb{T}^2$ in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit satisfies an elliptic difference equation which quantizes the Seiberg-Witten curve of the 6d theory. The expectation value of the codimension 4 defect appearing in the difference equation is an even (under reflection) degree $N_c$ section over the elliptic curve when $N_c$ is even, and an odd section when $N_c$ is odd. We also find that RG-flows of the defects and the associated difference equations in the 6d $\mathrm{SO}(2N+1)$ gauge theories triggered by Higgs VEVs of KK-momentum states provide quantum Seiberg-Witten curves for $\mathbb{Z}_2$ twisted compactifications of the 6d $\mathrm{SO}(2N)$ gauge theories.

In arXiv:2110.06932, we argued that the chiral central charge -- a topologically protected quantity characterizing the edge theory of a gapped (2+1)-dimensional system -- can be extracted from the bulk by using an order parameter called the modular commutator. In this paper, we reveal general properties of the modular commutator and strengthen its relationship with the chiral central charge. First, we identify connections between the modular commutator and conditional mutual information, time reversal, and modular flow. Second, we prove, within the framework of the entanglement bootstrap program, that two topologically ordered media connected by a gapped domain wall must have the same modular commutator in their respective bulk. Third, we numerically calculate the value of the modular commutator for a bosonic lattice Laughlin state for finite sizes and extrapolate to the infinite-volume limit. The result of this extrapolation is consistent with the proposed formula up to an error of about 0.7%.
