We study a class of interface conformal field theories obtained by taking a large $N$ CFT and turning on a relevant double-trace deformation over half space. At low energies, this leads to a conformal interface separating two CFTs which are related by RG flow. We set up the large $N$ expansion of these models by employing a Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation over half space, and use this approach to compute some of the defect CFT data. We also calculate the free energy of the theory in the case of spherical interface, which encodes a conformal anomaly coefficient for even dimensional interface, and the analog of the $g$-function for odd-dimensional interface. These models have a dual description in terms of a gravitational theory in AdS where a bulk scalar field satisfies different boundary conditions on each half of the AdS boundary. We review this construction and show that the results of the large $N$ expansion on the CFT side are in precise agreement with the holographic predictions.

We introduce an effective field theory (EFT) for conformal impurity by considering a pair of transversely displaced impurities and integrating out modes with mass inversely proportional to the separation distance. This EFT captures the universal signature of the impurity seen by a heavy local operator. We focus on the case of conformal boundaries and derive universal formulas from this EFT for the boundary structure constants at high energy. We point out that the more familiar thermal EFT for conformal field theory is a special case of this EFT with distinguished conformal boundaries. We also derive, for general conformal impurities, non-positivity and convexity-like constraints on the Casimir energy which determines the leading EFT coefficient.

We study the operator algebra of extended conformal defects in more than two spacetime dimensions. Such algebra structure encodes the combined effect of multiple impurities on physical observables at long distances as well as the interactions among the impurities. These features are formalized by a fusion product which we define for a pair of defects, after isolating divergences that capture the effective potential between the defects, which generalizes the usual Casimir energy. We discuss general properties of the corresponding fusion algebra and contrast with the more familiar cases that involve topological defects. We also describe the relation to a different defect setup in the shape of a wedge. We provide explicit examples to illustrate these properties using line defects and interfaces in the Wilson-Fisher CFT and the Gross-Neveu(-Yukawa) CFT and determine the defect fusion data thereof.

These models admit natural line defects obtained by integrating over a line either the scalar field in the GNY description, or the fermion bilinear operator in the GN description. We compute the beta function for the defect RG flow using both the epsilon expansion and the large $N$ approach, and find IR stable fixed points for the defect coupling, thus providing evidence for a non-trivial IR DCFT. We also compute some of the DCFT observables at the fixed point, and check that the $g$-function associated with the circular defect is consistent with the $g$-theorem for the defect RG flow.

We study operators with large charge $j$ in the $d$-dimensional $O(N)$ model with long range interactions that decrease with the distance as $1/r^{d+s}$, where $s$ is a continuous parameter. We consider the double scaling limit of large $N$, large $j$ with $j/N=\hat{j}$ fixed, and identify the semiclassical saddle point that captures the two-point function of the large charge operators in this limit. The solution is given in terms of certain ladder conformal integrals that have recently appeared in the literature on fishnet models. We find that the scaling dimensions for general $s$ interpolate between $Δ_j \sim \frac{(d-s)}{2}j$ at small $\hat{j}$ and $Δ_j \sim \frac{(d+s)}{2}j$ at large $\hat{j}$, which is a qualitatively different behavior from the one found in the short range version of the $O(N)$ model. We also derive results for the structure constants and 4-point functions with two large charge and one or two finite charge operators. Using a description of the long range models as defects in a higher dimensional local free field theory, we also obtain the scaling dimensions in a complementary way, by map** the problem to a cylinder in the presence of a chemical potential for the conserved charge.

We study the boundary critical behavior of conformal field theories of interacting fermions in the Gross-Neveu universality class. By a Weyl transformation, the problem can be studied by placing the CFT in an anti de Sitter space background. After reviewing some aspects of free fermion theories in AdS, we use both large $N$ methods and the epsilon expansion near 2 and 4 dimensions to study the conformal boundary conditions in the Gross-Neveu CFT. At large $N$ and general dimension $d$, we find three distinct boundary conformal phases. Near four dimensions, where the CFT is described by the Wilson-Fisher fixed point of the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa model, two of these phases correspond respectively to the choice of Neumann or Dirichlet boundary condition on the scalar field, while the third one corresponds to the case where the bulk scalar field acquires a classical expectation value. One may flow between these boundary critical points by suitable relevant boundary deformations. We compute the AdS free energy on each of them, and verify that its value is consistent with the boundary version of the F-theorem. We also compute some of the BCFT observables in these theories, including bulk two-point functions of scalar and fermions, and four-point functions of boundary fermions.

We study monodromy defects in $O(N)$ symmetric scalar field theories in $d$ dimensions. After a Weyl transformation, a monodromy defect may be described by placing the theory on $S^1\times H^{d-1}$, where $H^{d-1}$ is the hyperbolic space, and imposing on the fundamental fields a twisted periodicity condition along $S^1$. In this description, the codimension two defect lies at the boundary of $H^{d-1}$. We first study the general monodromy defect in the free field theory, and then develop the large $N$ expansion of the defect in the interacting theory, focusing for simplicity on the case of $N$ complex fields with a one-parameter monodromy condition. We also use the $ε$-expansion in $d=4-ε$, providing a check on the large $N$ approach. When the defect has spherical geometry, its expectation value is a meaningful quantity, and it may be obtained by computing the free energy of the twisted theory on $S^1\times H^{d-1}$. It was conjectured that the logarithm of the defect expectation value, suitably multiplied by a dimension dependent sine factor, should decrease under a defect RG flow. We check this conjecture in our examples, both in the free and interacting case, by considering a defect RG flow that corresponds to imposing alternate boundary conditions on one of the low-lying Kaluza-Klein modes on $H^{d-1}$. We also show that, adapting standard techniques from the AdS/CFT literature, the $S^1\times H^{d-1}$ setup is well suited to the calculation of the defect CFT data, and we discuss various examples, including one-point functions of bulk operators, scaling dimensions of defect operators, and four-point functions of operator insertions on the defect.

We present an analytic study of conformal field theories on the real projective space $\mathbb{RP}^d$, focusing on the two-point functions of scalar operators. Due to the partially broken conformal symmetry, these are non-trivial functions of a conformal cross ratio and are constrained to obey a crossing equation. After reviewing basic facts about the structure of correlators on $\mathbb{RP}^d$, we study a simple holographic setup which captures the essential features of boundary correlators on $\mathbb{RP}^d$. The analysis is based on calculations of Witten diagrams on the quotient space $AdS_{d+1}/\mathbb{Z}_2$, and leads to an analytic approach to two-point functions. In particular, we argue that the structure of the conformal block decomposition of the exchange Witten diagrams suggests a natural basis of analytic functionals, whose action on the conformal blocks turns the crossing equation into certain sum rules. We test this approach in the canonical example of $φ^4$ theory in dimension $d=4-ε$, extracting the CFT data to order $ε^2$. We also check our results by standard field theory methods, both in the large $N$ and $ε$ expansions. Finally, we briefly discuss the relation of our analysis to the problem of construction of local bulk operators in AdS/CFT.

Using the fact that flat space with a boundary is related by a Weyl transformation to anti-de Sitter (AdS) space, one may study observables in boundary conformal field theory (BCFT) by placing a CFT in AdS. In addition to correlation functions of local operators, a quantity of interest is the free energy of the CFT computed on the AdS space with hyperbolic ball metric, i.e. with a spherical boundary. It is natural to expect that the AdS free energy can be used to define a quantity that decreases under boundary renormalization group (RG) flows. We test this idea by discussing in detail the case of the large $N$ critical $O(N)$ model in general dimension $d$, as well as its perturbative descriptions in the epsilon-expansion. Using the AdS approach, we recover the various known boundary critical behaviors of the model, and we compute the free energy for each boundary fixed point, finding results which are consistent with the conjectured $F$-theorem in a continuous range of dimensions. Finally, we also use the AdS setup to compute correlation functions and extract some of the BCFT data. In particular, we show that using the bulk equations of motion, in conjunction with crossing symmetry, gives an efficient way to constrain bulk two-point functions and extract anomalous dimensions of boundary operators.

We study the critical properties of scalar field theories in $d+1$ dimensions with $O(N)$ invariant interactions localized on a $d$-dimensional boundary. By a combination of large $N$ and epsilon expansions, we provide evidence for the existence of non-trivial $O(N)$ BCFTs in $1<d<4$. Due to having free fields in the bulk, these models possess bulk higher-spin currents which are conserved up to terms localized on the boundary. We suggest that this should lead to a set of protected spinning operators on the boundary, and give evidence that their anomalous dimensions vanish. We also discuss the closely related long-range $O(N)$ models in $d$ dimensions, and in particular study a weakly coupled description of the $d=1$ long range $O(N)$ model near the upper critical value of the long range parameter, which is given in terms of a non-local non-linear sigma model. By combining the known perturbative descriptions, we provide some estimates of critical exponents in $d=1$.

The Cosmic Microwave Background can provide information regarding physics of the very early universe, more specifically, of the matter-radiation distribution of the inflationary era. Starting from the effective field theory of inflation, we use the Goldstone action to calculate the three point correlation function for the Goldstone field, whose results can be directly applied to the field describing the curvature perturbations around a de Sitter solution for the inflationary era. We then use the data from the recent Planck mission for the parameters $f_{NL}^{equil}$ and $f_{NL}^{orthog}$ which parametrize the size and shape of non-Gaussianities generated in single field models of inflation. Using these known values, we calculate the parameters relevant to our analysis, $f_{NL}^{\dotπ^3}$, $f_{NL}^{\dotπ(\partial _i π)^2}$ and the speed of sound $c_s$ which parametrize the non-Gaussianities arising from two different kinds of generalized interactions of the scalar field in question.

Using the gauge-gravity duality we have obtained the potential between a heavy quark and an antiquark pair, which is moving perpendicular to the direction of orientation, in a strongly-coupled supersymmetric hot plasma. For the purpose we work on a metric in the gravity side, {\em viz.} OKS-BH geometry, whose dual in the gauge theory side runs with the energy and hence proves to be a better background for thermal QCD. The potential obtained has confining term both in vacuum and in medium, in addition to the Coulomb term alone, usually reported in the literature. As the velocity of the pair is increased the screening of the potential gets weakened, which may be understood by the decrease of effective temperature with the increase of velocity. The crucial observation of our work is that beyond a critical separation of the heavy quark pair, the potential develops an imaginary part which is nowadays understood to be the main source of dissociation. The imaginary part is found to vanish at small $r$, thus agrees with the perturbative result. Finally we have estimated the thermal width for the ground and first excited states and found that non-zero rapidities lead to an increase of thermal width. This implies that the moving quarkonia dissociate easier than the static ones, which agrees with other calculations. However, the width in our case is larger than other calculations due to the presence of confining terms.

In gauge-gravity duality, the heavy quark potential at finite temperature is usually calculated with the pure AdS background, which does not capture the renormalization group (RG) running in the gauge theory part. In addition, the potential does not contain any confining term in the deconfined phase. Following the Klebanov-Strassler geometry, we employ a geometry, which captures the RG flow similar to QCD, to obtain the heavy quark potential by analytically continuing the string configurations into the complex plane. In addition to the attractive terms, the obtained potential has confining terms both at $T = 0$ and $T \neq 0 $, compared to the calculations usually done in the literature, where only the Coulomb-like term is present in the deconfined phase. The potential also develops an (negative) imaginary part above a critical separation, $r_c (= 0.53 z_h )$. Moreover, our potential exhibits a behavior different from the usual Debye screening obtained from perturbation theory.
