Abstract:
We discuss back-reaction in the semiclassical treatment of quantum fields near a black hole. When the state deviates significantly from Hartle-Hawking, simple energetic considerations of back-reaction give rise to a characteristic radial distance scale $\sim (r_s^{2}G_N)^{1/D}$, below which some breakdown of effective field theory may occur.

Abstract:
We show that a class of $L$-loop conformal ladder graphs correspond to twisted partition functions of free massive complex scalars in $d=2L+1$ dimensions. The graphs arise as four-point functions in certain two- and four-dimensional conformal fishnet models. The twisted thermal two-point function of the scalars is a generator of such conformal graphs for all loops. We argue that this correspondenc…

We argue that this correspondence is seeded by a system of two decoupled harmonic oscillators twisted by an imaginary chemical potential. We find a number of algebraic and differential relations among the conformal graphs which mirror the underlying free dynamics.

Abstract:
We discuss the factorization and continuity properties of fields in the Euclidean gravitational path integral with higher dimension operators constructed from powers of the Riemann tensor. We construct the boundary terms corresponding to the microcanonical ensemble and show that the saddle point approximation to the path integral with a quasilocal energy constraint generally yields a saddle point…

We discuss the factorization and continuity properties of fields in the Euclidean gravitational path integral with higher dimension operators constructed from powers of the Riemann tensor. We construct the boundary terms corresponding to the microcanonical ensemble and show that the saddle point approximation to the path integral with a quasilocal energy constraint generally yields a saddle point with discontinuous temperature. This extends a previous result for the Euclidean Schwarzschild-de Sitter geometry in Einstein gravity and shows that it is robust against at least some types of quantum corrections from heavy fields. As an application, we compute the entropy of SdS in $\text{D}=4$ using the BTZ method. Our result matches the entropy calculated using Wald's formula.

We develop semiclassical methods for studying bubble nucleation in models with parameters that vary slowly in time. Introducing a more general rotation of the time contour allows access to a larger set of final states, and typically a non-Euclidean rotation is necessary in order to find the most relevant tunneling solution. We work primarily with effective quantum mechanical models parametrizing tunneling along restricted trajectories in field theories, which are sufficient, for example, to study thin wall bubble nucleation. We also give one example of an exact instanton solution in a particular Kaluza-Klein cosmology where the circumference of the internal circle is changing in time.

We generalize the Fefferman-Graham (FG) ambient construction for conformal manifolds to a corresponding construction for Weyl manifolds. We first introduce the Weyl-ambient metric motivated by the Weyl-Fefferman-Graham (WFG) gauge. From a top-down perspective, we show that the Weyl-ambient space as a pseudo-Riemannian geometry induces a codimension-2 Weyl geometry. Then, from a bottom-up perspective, we start from promoting a conformal manifold into a Weyl manifold by assigning a Weyl connection to the principal $\mathbb{R}_+$-bundle realizing a Weyl structure. We show that the Weyl structure admits a well-defined initial value problem, which determines the Weyl-ambient metric. Through the Weyl-ambient construction, we also investigate Weyl-covariant tensors on the Weyl manifold and define extended Weyl-obstruction tensors explicitly.

Recently a generalization of the Fefferman-Graham gauge for asymptotically locally AdS spacetimes, called the Weyl-Fefferman-Graham (WFG) gauge, has been proposed. It was shown that the WFG gauge induces a Weyl geometry on the conformal boundary. The Weyl geometry consists of a metric and a Weyl connection. Thus, this is a useful setting for studying dual field theories with background Weyl symmetry. Working in the WFG formalism, we find the generalization of obstruction tensors, which are Weyl-covariant tensors that appear as poles in the Fefferman-Graham expansion of the bulk metric for even boundary dimensions. We see that these Weyl-obstruction tensors can be used as building blocks for the Weyl anomaly of the dual field theory. We then compute the Weyl anomaly for $6d$ and $8d$ field theories in the Weyl-Fefferman-Graham formalism, and find that the contribution from the Weyl structure in the bulk appears as cohomologically trivial modifications. Expressed in terms of the Weyl-Schouten tensor and extended Weyl-obstruction tensors, the results of the holographic Weyl anomaly up to $8d$ also reveal hints on its expression in any dimension.
