We consider solutions dual to defects in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory that have non-trivial monodromy for $U(1)^3\subset SO(6)$ global symmetry and we also allow for the possibility of conical singularities. In addition, we consider the addition of fermionic and bosonic mass terms that have non trivial dependence on the spatial directions transverse to the defect, while preserving the superconformal symmetry of the defect. We compute various physical quantities including the central charges of the defect expressed as a function of the monodromy, the on-shell action as well as associated supersymmetric Renyi entropies. Analogous computations are carried out for superconformal defects in the $\mathcal{N}=1$, $d=4$ Leigh-Strassler SCFT. We also show that the defects of the two SCFTs are connected by a line of bulk marginal mass deformations and argue that they are also related by bulk RG flow.

We construct a family of near-CFT$_1$ models with a conserved U(1) charge, whose basic degrees of freedom are canonical bosons. The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model -- the first microscopic model that realizes the near-CFT$_1$ dynamics -- is based on random $p$-local interactions among fermions. However, a bosonic near-CFT$_1$ model has remained elusive in the $p$-local approach because such constructions generally suffer from unwanted orderings at low temperatures. Our construction is based on a recent insight that near-CFT$_1$ dynamics can quite generally arise if we place a large amount of random fluxes in a many-body Fock space and $p$-locality is not essential. All such models are essentially solved by chord diagrams regardless of the nature of the underlying degrees of freedom. We further argue that such bosonic models do not suffer from energetic instablities or unwanted low-temperature orderings. For comparison we also consider a second class of charge-conserving models which are based on qubits. The thermodynamic scalings of these models are very similar to those of the double-scaled complex SYK model but are free of certain singularities the latter suffers from. We also show the level statistics of both models are described by random matrix theory universality down to very low energies.

We begin by develo** a path integral formalism of coarse graining chord diagrams with a single species of chords, which has the same equations of motion as the bi-local ($GΣ$) Liouville action, yet appears otherwise to be different and in particular well defined. We then develop a similar formalism for two types of chords, allowing us to study different types of deformations of double scaled SYK and in particular a deformation by an integrable Hamiltonian. The system has two distinct thermodynamic phases: one is continuously connected to the chaotic SYK Hamiltonian, the other is continuously connected to the integrable Hamiltonian, separated at low temperature by a first order phase transition. We also analyze the phase diagram for generic deformations, which in some cases includes a zero-temperature phase transition.

Unlike the SYK model, the hypercube model is not $p$-local. Rather, we note that the shared feature between the two models is that they both have a large amount of disordered but uniform fluxes on their Fock-space graphs, and we propose this is a broader characterization of near-CFT$_1$ microscopics. Moreover, we suggest that the hypercube model can be viewed as the operator growth model of the DS-SYK model. We explain some universality in subleading corrections and relate them to bulk vertices. Finally, we revise a claim made the aforementioned reference about the existence of a spectral gap.

We will identify the set of observables that have the same correlation functions as the double-scaled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (DS-SYK) model, and hence the hypercube model is an equally good quantum model for near-AdS$_2$/near-CFT$_{1}$ (NAdS$_2$/NCFT$_1$) holography. Unlike the SYK model, the hypercube Hamiltonian is not $p$ local. Instead, the SYK model can be understood as a Fock-space model with similar frustrations. Hence we propose this type of Fock-space frustration as the broader characterization for NAdS$_2$/NCFT$_1$ microscopics, which encompasses the hypercube and the DS-SYK models as two specific examples. We then speculate on the possible origin of such frustrations.

Recent studies have revealed intriguing similarities between the contribution of wormholes to the gravitational path integral and the phenomenon of replica symmetry breaking observed in spin glasses and other disordered systems. Interestingly, these configurations may also be important for the explanation of the information paradox of quantum black holes. Motivated by these developments, we investigate the thermodynamic properties of a $PT$-symmetric system composed of two random non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with no explicit coupling between them. After performing ensemble averaging, we identify numerically and analytically a robust first-order phase transition in the free energy of two models with quantum chaotic dynamics: the elliptic Ginibre ensemble of random matrices and a non-Hermitian Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. The free energy of the Ginibre model is temperature-independent in the low-temperature phase. The SYK model has a similar behavior for sufficiently low temperature, then it experiences a possible continuous phase transition to a phase with a temperature-dependent free energy before the first-order transition takes place at a higher temperature. We identify the order parameter of the first-order phase transition and obtain analytical expressions for the critical temperature. The mechanism behind the transition is the existence of replica symmetry breaking configurations coupling Left and Right replicas that control the low-temperature limit of the partition function. We speculate that quantum chaos may be necessary for the observed dominance of off-diagonal replica symmetry breaking configurations in the low-temperature limit.

We analyze a two-body nonhermitian two-site Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model with the couplings of one site complex conjugated to the other site. This model, with no explicit coupling between the sites, shows an infinite number of phase transitions which is a consequence of the partition function factorizing into a product over Matsubara frequencies. We calculate the quenched free energy in two different ways, first in terms of the single-particle energies, and second by solving the Schwinger-Dyson equations. The first calculation can be done entirely in terms of a one-site model. The conjugate replica enters due to non-analyticities when Matsubara frequencies enter the spectral support of the coupling matrix. The second calculation is based on the replica trick of the two-site partition function. Both methods give the same result. The free-fermion partition function can be rephrased as a matrix model for the coupling matrix. Up to minor details, this model is the random matrix model that describes the chiral phase transition of QCD, and the order parameter of the two-body model corresponds to the chiral condensate of QCD. Comparing to the corresponding four-body model, we are able to determine which features of the free energy are due to chaotic nature of the four-body model. The high-temperature phase of both models is entropy dominated, and in both cases is determined by the spectral density. The four-body SYK model has a low-temperature phase whose free energy is almost temperature-independent, signaling an effective gap of the theory even though the actual spectrum does not exhibit a gap. However the low-temperature free energy of the two-body SYK model is not flat, in fact it oscillates to arbitrarily low temperature. This indicates a less desirable feature that the entropy of the two-body model is not always positive, which most likely is a consequence of the nonhermiticity.

We obtain the particle number density and the accretion rate which depend on the mass, the magnetic charge, and the dilation of black hole, meaning that these parameters take important roles in the process of accretion. Possible theoretical and observational constraints on the parameter related to the dilation are discussed. The results may help us to get deeper understanding of the behavior of accreted flow near the event horizon of black hole.

In the case of the SYK model, we show explicitly that the spectrum of the effective replica theory has a gap. These features are strikingly similar to those induced by wormholes in the gravity path integral which suggests a close relation between both configurations. For a non-chaotic SYK, the results are qualitatively different: the spectrum is gapless in the low temperature phase and there is an infinite number of second order phase transitions unrelated to the restoration of replica symmetry.

However, most of them are found near their orbital pericenters. This leads to a very low probability, P = 2 $10^{-7}$, that they could be long-lived satellites such as sub-halos predicted by cosmological simulations. Their proximity to their pericenters suggests instead that they are affected by tidal shocks, which provide sufficient kinematic energy to explain their high velocity dispersions. Dependency of the dark matter properties to their distance to the Milky Way appears to favor tidally shocked and out of equilibrium dSphs instead of self-equilibrium systems dominated by dark matter.

We study a sparse Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with $N$ Majoranas where only $\sim k N$ independent matrix elements are non-zero. We identify a minimum $k \gtrsim 1$ for quantum chaos to occur by a level statistics analysis. The spectral density in this region, and for a larger $k$, is still given by the Schwarzian prediction of the dense SYK model, though with renormalized parameters. Similar results are obtained for a beyond linear scaling with $N$ of the number of non-zero matrix elements. This is a strong indication that this is the minimum connectivity for the sparse SYK model to still have a quantum gravity dual. We also find an intriguing exact relation between the leading correction to moments of the spectral density due to sparsity and the leading $1/d$ correction of Parisi's U(1) lattice gauge theory in a $d$ dimensional hypercube. In the $k \to 1$ limit, different disorder realizations of the sparse SYK model show emergent random matrix statistics that for fixed $N$ can be in any universality class of the ten-fold way. The agreement with random matrix statistics is restricted to short range correlations, no more than a few level spacings, in particular in the tail of the spectrum. In addition, emergent discrete global symmetries in most of the disorder realizations for $k$ slightly below one give rise to $2^m$-fold degenerate spectra, with $m$ being a positive integer. For $k =3/4$, we observe a large number of such emergent global symmetries with a maximum $2^8$-fold degenerate spectra for $N = 26$.

We analyze the spectral properties of a $d$-dimensional HyperCubic (HC) lattice model originally introduced by Parisi. The U(1) gauge links of this model give rise to a magnetic flux of constant magnitude $φ$ but random orientation through the faces of the hypercube. The HC model, which also can be written as a model of $2d$ interacting Majorana fermions, has a spectral flow that is reminiscent of the Maldacena-Qi (MQ) model, and its spectrum at $φ=0$, actually coincides with the coupling term of the MQ model. As was already shown by Parisi, at leading order in $1/d$ , the spectral density of this model is given by the density function of the Q-Hermite polynomials, which is also the spectral density of the double-scaled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. Parisi demonstrated this by map** the moments of the HC model to $Q$-weighted sums on chord diagrams. We point out that the subleading moments of the HC model can also be mapped to weighted sums on chord diagrams, in a manner that descends from the leading moments. The HC model has a magnetic inversion symmetry that depends on both the magnitude and the orientation of the magnetic flux through the faces of the hypercube. The spectrum for fixed quantum number of this symmetry exhibits a transition from regular spectra at $φ=0$ to chaotic spectra with spectral statistics given by the Gaussian Unitary Ensembles (GUE) for larger values of $φ$. For small magnetic flux, the ground state is gapped and is close to a Thermofield Double (TFD) state.

We present a detailed quantitative analysis of spectral correlations in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. We find that the deviations from universal Random Matrix Theory (RMT) behavior are due to a small number of long-wavelength fluctuations from one realization of the ensemble to the next one. These modes can be parameterized effectively in terms of Q-Hermite orthogonal polynomials, the main contribution being the scale fluctuations for which we give a simple estimate. Our numerical results for $N=32$ show that only the lowest eight polynomials are needed to eliminate the nonuniversal part of the spectral fluctuations. The covariance matrix of the coefficients of this expansion is obtained analytically from low-order double-trace moments. We evaluate the covariance matrix of the first six moments and find that it agrees with the numerics. We also analyze the spectral correlations using a nonlinear $σ$-model, which is derived through a Fierz transformation, and evaluate the one and two-point spectral correlator to two-loop order. The wide correlator is given by the sum of the universal RMT result and corrections whose lowest-order term corresponds to scale fluctuations. However, the loop expansion of the $σ$-model results in an ill-behaved expansion of the resolvent, and it gives universal RMT fluctuations not only for $q=4$ but also for the $q=2$ SYK model while the correct result in this case should have been Poisson statistics. We analyze the number variance and spectral form factor for $N=32$ and $q=4$ numerically. We show that the quadratic deviation of the number variance for large energies appears as a peak for small times in the spectral form factor. After eliminating the long-wavelength fluctuations, we find quantitative agreement with RMT up to an exponentially large number of level spacings or exponentially short times, respectively.

We construct gray soliton configurations, which move at constant speeds, in holographic superfluids for the first time. Since there should be no dissipation for a moving soliton to exist, we use the simplest holographic superfluid model at zero temperature, considering both the standard and alternative quantizations. For comparison purpose, we first investigate black solitons in the zero temperature holographic superfluids, which are static configurations. Then we focus on the numerical construction of gray solitons under both quantizations, which interpolate between the (static) black solitons and sound waves (moving at the speed of sound). Interestingly, under the standard quantization, a peculiar oscillation of the soliton configurations is observed, very much resembling the Friedel oscillation in fermionic superfluids at the BCS regime. Some implications and other aspects of the soliton configurations are also discussed.

There is a long-standing puzzle concerning the Coulomb solutions of the Dirac equation, i.e., what is the physics governing the weakly divergent near-the-origin behavior of the Dirac wave functions of the $nS_{1/2}$ hydrogen? As a sequel of our preceding work that aim to demystifying the universal near-the-origin behavior of the atomic Schrödinger and Klein-Gordon wave functions, the goal of this work is to demonstrate that, within the nonrelativistic effective field theory (NREFT) tailored for Coulombic atoms, the universal logarithmic divergence of the Dirac wave functions can be accounted by the perturbatively calculable Wilson coefficient emerging from the operator product expansion (OPE) of the electron and the nucleus fields. The cause is due to the relativistic kinetic correction and Darwin (zitterbewegung) term in the NREFT. With the aid of renormalization group equation, one can resum the leading logarithms to all orders in $Zα$ and recover the $r^{-Z^2α^2/2}$ anomalous scaling behavior exhibited by the Dirac wave function for the $nS_{1/2}$ hydrogen. It appears somewhat counterintuitive that these universal logarithmic divergences can not be accounted by the OPE set up in the relativistic QED. We are thereby enforced to conclude that the Dirac wave function must cease to be meaningful when $r$ is shorter than the electron's Compton wavelength.

This work is driven by our curiosity towards some basic questions in QCD: how is the energy of a moving hadron partitioned among different gauge-invariant sectors in QCD Hamiltonian? How is the energy of an massless pion separated between quark and gluon sectors, particularly in the soft pion limit? Is it possible to decompose the celebrated Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner (GOR) relation? To what extent can we justify the quark potential model from the field-theoretical mass decomposition for heavy quarkonium? Due to limitation of contemporary nonperturbative tools, we do not yet know answers to these questions in realistic QCD. In this work, we take the 't Hooft model (two-dimensional QCD in large-$N$ limit) as a prototype model that mimics some essential aspects of the true QCD. We investigate the gauge-invariant energy decomposition of a flavor-neutral meson that can carry an arbitrary momentum (including stationary case), with meson species ranging from massless pion to bottomonium. All the aforementioned questions can be addressed satisfactorily within this model, in particular some unexpected patterns related to pion are discovered for the first time in two-dimensional QCD. We hope that our study can offer some useful clues and stimulation for future investigations on hadron energy decomposition in realistic QCD.

In this paper we explain the relation between the free energy of the SYK model for $N$ Majorana fermions with a random $q$-body interaction and the moments of its spectral density. The high temperature expansion of the free energy gives the cumulants of the spectral density. Using that the cumulants are extensive we find the $p$ dependence of the $1/N^2$ correction of the $2p$-th moments obtained in 1801.02696. Conversely, the $1/N^2$ corrections to the moments give the correction (even $q$) to the $β^6$ coefficient of the high temperature expansion of the free energy for arbitrary $q$. Our result agrees with the $1/q^3$ correction obtained by Tarnopolsky using a mean field expansion. These considerations also lead to a more powerful method for solving the moment problem and intersection-graph enumeration problems. We take advantage of this and push the moment calculation to $1/N^3$ order and find surprisingly simple enumeration identities for intersection graphs. The $1/N^3$ corrections to the moments, give corrections to the $β^8$ coefficient (for even $q$) of the high temperature expansion of the free energy which have not been calculated before. Results for odd $q$, where the SYK `Hamiltonian' is the supercharge of a supersymmetric theory are discussed as well.

As a sequel of our preceding work [1] we carry out a comprehensive comparative study between the quasi parton distribution functions (PDFs), distribution amplitudes (DAs) and their light-cone counterparts for various flavor-neutral mesons, in the context of the 't Hooft model, that is, the two-dimensional QCD in the large $N$ limit. In contrast to the original derivation via diagrammatic techniques exemplified by Dyson-Schwinger and Bethe-Salpeter equations, here we employ the Hamiltonian operator approach to reconstruct the celebrated 't Hooft equation in light-front quantization, and Bars-Green equations in equal-time quantization. The novelty of our derivation is to employ the soft momentum cutoff as the IR regulator. As a virtue of this operator approach, the functional form of the quasi distributions can be transparently built out of the Bars-Green wave functions and the Bogoliubov angle with the aid of bosonization technique. Equipped with various bound-state wave functions numerically inferred in [1], we then investigate how rapidly the quasi distributions approach their light-cone counterparts with the increasing meson momentum. We observe that, light mesons' quasi distributions approach the light-cone distributions in a slower pace than the heavy quarkonia. Curiously, lattice simulations of quasi distributions in four-dimensional QCD also discover this feature. Furthermore, we also compute the partonic light-cone PDF and quasi-PDF to one-loop order in perturbation theory, again employing the momentum cutoff as the IR regulator. We explicitly verify one of the backbones underlying the large momentum effective field theory (LaMET), namely, both quasi-PDFs and light-cone PDFs in ${\rm QCD}_2$ indeed possess the same IR behavior at leading order in $1/P^z$

We analytically evaluate the moments of the spectral density of the $q$-body Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, and obtain order $1/N^2$ corrections for all moments, where $N$ is the total number of Majorana fermions. To order $1/N$, moments are given by those of the weight function of the Q-Hermite polynomials. Representing Wick contractions by rooted chord diagrams, we show that the $1/N^2$ correction for each chord diagram is proportional to the number of triangular loops of the corresponding intersection graph, with an extra grading factor when $q$ is odd. Therefore the problem of finding $1/N^2$ corrections is mapped to a triangle counting problem. Since the total number of triangles is a purely graph-theoretic property, we can compute them for the $q=1$ and $q=2$ SYK models, where the exact moments can be obtained analytically using other methods, and therefore we have solved the moment problem for any $q$ to $1/N^2$ accuracy. The moments are then used to obtain the spectral density of the SYK model to order $1/N^2$. We also obtain an exact analytical result for all contraction diagrams contributing to the moments, which can be evaluated up to eighth order. This shows that the Q-Hermite approximation is accurate even for small values of $N$.

We investigate the supersymmetric Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, $N$ Majorana fermions with infinite range interactions in $0+1$ dimensions. We have found that, close to the ground state $E \approx 0$, discrete symmetries alter qualitatively the spectral properties with respect to the non-supersymmetric SYK model. The average spectral density at finite $N$, which we compute analytically and numerically, grows exponentially with $N$ for $E \approx 0$. However the chiral condensate, which is normalized with respect the total number of eigenvalues, vanishes in the thermodynamic limit. Slightly above $E \approx 0$, the spectral density grows exponential with the energy. Deep in the quantum regime, corresponding to the first $O(N)$ eigenvalues, the average spectral density is universal and well described by random matrix ensembles with chiral and superconducting discrete symmetries. The dynamics for $E \approx 0$ is investigated by level fluctuations. Also in this case we find excellent agreement with the prediction of chiral and superconducting random matrix ensembles for eigenvalues separations smaller than the Thouless energy, which seems to scale linearly with $N$. Deviations beyond the Thouless energy, which describes how ergodicity is approached, are universality characterized by a quadratic growth of the number variance. In the time domain, we have found analytically that the spectral form factor $g(t)$, obtained from the connected two-level correlation function of the unfolded spectrum, decays as $1/t^2$ for times shorter but comparable to the Thouless time with $g(0)$ related to the coefficient of the quadratic growth of the number variance. Our results provide further support that quantum black holes are ergodic and therefore can be classified by random matrix theory.

The corresponding Bethe-Salpeter equation for a bound $q\bar{q}$ pair, originally derived by Bars and Green in 1978, was first numerically tackled by Li and collaborators in late 1980s, yet only for the {\it stationary} mesons. In this paper, we make further progress by numerically solving the Bars-Green equation for {\it moving} mesons, ranging from the chiral pion to charmonium. By choosing several different quark masses, we computed the corresponding quark condensates, meson spectra and their decay constants for a variety of meson momenta, and found satisfactory agreement with their counterparts obtained using light-cone gauge, thus numerically verified the gauge and Poincaré invariance of the 't Hooft model. Moreover, we have explicitly confirmed that, as the meson gets more and more boosted, the large component of the Bars-Green wave function indeed approaches the corresponding 't Hooft light-cone wave function, while the small component of the wave function rapidly fades away.

It is well known that under the color-decomposition, one-loop amplitude of gluons contains partial amplitudes of single and double trace structures, and particularly all partial amplitudes of double trace structure can be expressed as a linear combination of partial amplitudes of single trace structure. Using unitarity cut method, we prove that this result is the natural consequence of tree-level Kleiss-Kuijf relation. Generalizing the unitarity cut method to two-loop (triple cut in this case), we show that, unlike the one-loop case, partial amplitudes of double and triple trace structures can not be expressed as a linear combination of partial amplitudes of leading-color single trace structure. For partial amplitudes of subleading-color single trace structure, we have shown a very nontrivial Kleiss-Kuijf relation for six and seven-point amplitudes, which is one new result of our paper and can not be obtained by U(1)-decoupling method. Mysteriously, when we consider the case of eight points, Kleiss-Kuijf relation must be modified for subleading-color single trace partial amplitudes.

We employ the effective field theory method to systematically study the short-range interaction in two-body sector in 2, 3 and 4 spacetime dimensions, respectively. The phi**4 theory is taken as a specific example and matched onto the nonrelativistic effective theory to one loop level. An exact, Lorentz-invariant expression for the S-wave amplitude is presented, from which the nonperturbative information can be easily extracted. We pay particular attention to the renormalization group analysis in the 3 dimensions, and show that relativistic effects qualitatively change the renormalization group flow of higher-dimensional operators. There is one ancient claim that triviality of the 4-dimensional phi**4 theory can be substantiated in the nonrelativistic limit. We illustrate that this assertion arises from treating the interaction between two nonrelativistic particles as literally zero-range, which is incompatible with the Uncertainty Principle. The S-wave effective range in this theory is identified to be approximately 16/3pi times the Compton wavelength.
