We give further evidence that the matrix-tensor model studied in \cite{belin2023} is dual to AdS$_{3}$ gravity including the sum over topologies. This provides a 3D version of the duality between JT gravity and an ensemble of random Hamiltonians, in which the matrix and tensor provide random CFT$_2$ data subject to a potential that incorporates the bootstrap constraints. We show how the Feynman rules of the ensemble produce a sum over all three-manifolds and how surgery is implemented by the matrix integral. The partition functions of the resulting 3d gravity theory agree with Virasoro TQFT (VTQFT) on a fixed, hyperbolic manifold. However, on non-hyperbolic geometries, our 3d gravity theory differs from VTQFT, leading to a difference in the eigenvalue statistics of the associated ensemble. As explained in \cite{belin2023}, the Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equations of the matrix-tensor integral play a crucial role in understanding how gravity emerges in the limit that the ensemble localizes to exact CFT's. We show how the SD equations can be translated into a combinatorial problem about three-manifolds.

We explicitly construct the states of the 2d free boson on the infinite line with specified asymptotic charges. The Minkowski CFT states derive from (the analytic continuation of) the shrinking limit of Euclidean angular quantization, wherein the superselection sector for fixed asymptotic charges corresponds to specific endpoint operators for the angular quantization on the sphere. When applied to string theory, we obtain a new class of fundamental strings that are neither open nor closed and which we dub "stretched strings". We describe constant-time snapshots of the worldsheets of the different types of stretched strings, and as a special case we find a heuristic picture of Maldacena's "long strings" in the $c=1$ string theory.

$α'$ corrections to near horizon dynamics of a Schwarzschild black hole in a large number of spacetime dimensions $D$ are governed by the worldsheet theory composed of the cigar CFT and the classical sigma model on the sphere at the horizon, along with a timelike-Liouville theory of central charge $26-D$. At leading order in weak string coupling, blackhole thermodynamics is insensitive to the details of timelike Liouville theory. In this limit, we use Lewkowycz-Maldacena-trick motivated infinitesimally off-shell closed string worldsheet formalism in [arxiv: 2310.02313] to calculate thermal entropy exactly in $α'$. The leading term in $α'\to 0$ limit and the first stingy correction of our result is in precise agreement with the target space Callan-Myers-Perry formula. Also, we point out a remarkable simplification at an ultra-low temperature of order $1/\sqrt{α'D}$ and show that for a certain special set of vertex operators involving modes of the $D$ dimensional spacetime and the time-like Liouville theory, the resulting worldsheet theory is related to Virasoro minimal string.

We define and compute the leading sphere diagram contribution to the entropy of the BTZ black hole supported by Kalb-Ramond flux in bosonic string theory. In a winding condensate description, integrating exactly over the constant mode for the radial direction of AdS$_3$ reduces the problem to one of the correlation functions of winding operators in the free theory. The volume of the residual PSL(2,$\mathbb{C}$) gauge group of the sphere is canceled by the action of conformal transformations on the winding interaction insertions. We formulate a precise version of the replica trick in terms of (infinitesimally) non-integer winding condensates to produce the entropy of the BTZ black hole. The resulting entropy can be calculated from the one-point function of a non-local operator on the worldsheet.

A key issue in both the field of quantum chaos and quantum gravity is an effective description of chaotic conformal field theories (CFTs), that is CFTs that have a quantum ergodic limit. We develop a framework incorporating the constraints of conformal symmetry and locality, allowing the definition of ensembles of `CFT data'. These ensembles take on the same role as the ensembles of random Hamiltonians in more conventional quantum ergodic phases of many-body quantum systems. To describe individual members of the ensembles, we introduce the notion of approximate CFT, defined as a collection of `CFT data' satisfying the usual CFT constraints approximately, i.e. up to small deviations. We show that they generically exist by providing concrete examples. Ensembles of approximate CFTs are very natural in holography, as every member of the ensemble is indistinguishable from a true CFT for low-energy probes that only have access to information from semi-classical gravity. To specify these ensembles, we impose successively higher moments of the CFT constraints. Lastly, we propose a theory of pure gravity in AdS$_3$ as a random matrix/tensor model implementing approximate CFT constraints. This tensor model is the maximum ignorance ensemble compatible with conformal symmetry, crossing invariance, and a primary gap to the black-hole threshold. The resulting theory is a random matrix/tensor model governed by the Virasoro 6j-symbol.

We propose a CFT definition of local observables in both the exterior and interior of bulk black holes, whenever such an interior exists. We achieve this by introducing a small microcanonical black hole as a "probe" and using its modular flow to propagate operators from the asymptotic boundary to the interior of other black holes along its worldline, elaborating on the ideas of [2009.04476]. The key conceptual advance is a CFT criterion for selecting states whose modular flow acts as geometric proper time translation in the bulk, which we dub "local equilibrium" states. Our interior reconstruction depends on the choice of code subspace but not on the specific black hole microstate and does not suffer from the "frozen vacuum" problem of other approaches. By virtue of our construction, the question of firewall typicality reduces to a technical problem we articulate and we identify a CFT correlator that is expected to signal the approach to the black hole singularity via a universal divergence. We end with comments on the utility of our framework to the quest for a quantum description of de Sitter cosmologies.

We present evidence for a duality between Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity minimally coupled to a free massive scalar field and a single-trace two-matrix model. One matrix is the Hamiltonian $H$ of a holographic disorder-averaged quantum mechanics, while the other matrix is the light operator $\cal O$ dual to the bulk scalar field. The single-boundary observables of interest are thermal correlation functions of $\cal O$. We study the matching of the genus zero one- and two-boundary expectation values in the matrix model to the disk and cylinder Euclidean path integrals. The non-Gaussian statistics of the matrix elements of $\cal O$ correspond to a generalization of the ETH ansatz.
We describe multiple ways to construct double-scaled matrix models that reproduce the gravitational disk correlators. One method involves imposing an operator equation obeyed by $H$ and $\cal O$ as a constraint on the two matrices. Separately, we design a model that reproduces certain double-scaled SYK correlators that may be scaled once more to obtain the disk correlators.
We show that in any single-trace, two-matrix model, the genus zero two-boundary expectation value, with up to one $\cal O$ insertion on each boundary, can be computed directly from all of the genus zero one-boundary correlators. Applied to the models of interest, we find that these cylinder observables depend on the details of the double-scaling limit. To the extent we have checked, it is possible to reproduce the gravitational double-trumpet, which is UV divergent, from a systematic classification of matrix model `t Hooft diagrams. The UV divergence indicates that the matrix integral saddle of interest is perturbatively unstable. A non-perturbative treatment of the matrix models discussed in this work is left for future investigations.

We develop a class of matrix models which implement and formalize the `eigenstate thermalization hypothesis' (ETH) and point out that in general these models must contain non-Gaussian corrections, already in order to correctly capture thermal mean-field theory, or to capture non-trivial OTOCs as well as their higher-order generalizations. We develop the framework of these `ETH matrix models', and put it in the context of recent studies in statistical physics incorporating higher statistical moments into the ETH ansatz. We then use the `ETH matrix model' in order to develop a matrix-integral description of JT gravity coupled to a single scalar field in the bulk. This particular example takes the form of a double-scaled ETH matrix model with non-Gaussian couplings matching disk correlators and the density of states of the gravitational theory. Having defined the model from the disk data, we present evidence that the model correctly captures the JT+matter theory with multiple boundaries, and conjecturally at higher genus. This is a shorter companion paper to the work [1], serving both as a guide to the much more extensive material presented there, as well as develo** its underpinning in statistical physics.

The most common quantization scheme in which to study a conformal field theory is radial quantization, wherein a Hilbert space of states is defined on a sphere, whose Hamiltonian when mapped to the plane is the dilatation generator and which boasts a state/operator correspondence. In this paper, we consider an alternative quantization scheme for 2d CFTs in which the plane is foliated by constant-angle slices, as opposed to concentric circles, whose Hamiltonian is the rotation generator. In this angular quantization, there is no state/operator correspondence but instead an "asymptotics/operator correspondence". A central feature is that the quantization slice ends on two operators, and a regulator must be chosen by excising holes around each operator and imposing suitable boundary conditions such that the holes shrink to the desired local operators. This angular quantization may be viewed as constructing CFTs in Minkowski space, or separately as studying non-conformal (but local) boundary conditions in CFTs. We provide explicit Fock space constructions for various free 2d CFTs. In addition to the motivation of applying angular quantization in string theory situations where traditional radial quantization is insufficient, we comment on its relation to modular Hamiltonian approaches to entanglement entropy.

The ER = EPR correspondence relates a superposition of entangled, disconnected spacetimes to a connected spacetime with an Einstein-Rosen bridge. We construct examples in which both sides may be described by weakly-coupled string theory. The relation between them is given by a Lorentzian continuation of the FZZ duality of the two-dimensional Euclidean black hole CFT in one example, and in another example by continuation of a similar duality that we propose for the asymptotic Euclidean AdS3 black hole. This gives a microscopic understanding of ER = EPR: one has a worldsheet duality between string theory in a connected, eternal black hole, and in a superposition of disconnected geometries in an entangled state. The disconnected description includes a condensate of entangled folded strings emanating from a strong-coupling region in place of a horizon. Our construction relies on a Lorentzian interpretation of Euclidean time winding operators via angular quantization, as well as some lesser known worldsheet string theories, such as perturbation theory around a thermofield-double state, which we define using Schwinger-Keldysh contours in target space.

We quantize this theory in Lorentz signature, and compute the Euclidean path integral summing over topologies including dynamical branes. The latter will be seen to exactly match with a modification of the SSS matrix model. The resolution of UV divergences in the gravitational instantons involving the branes will lead us to understand the matrix model interpretation of the Wilsonian effective theory perspective on the gravitational theory. We complete this modified SSS matrix model nonperturbatively by extending the integration contour of eigenvalues into the complex plane. Furthermore, we give a new interpretation of other phases in such matrix models. We derive an effective $W(Φ)$ dilaton gravity, which exhibits similar physics semiclassically. In the limit of a large number of flavors of branes, the effective extremal entropy $S_{0,\text{eff}}$ has the form of counting the states of these branes.

For large k, the CFT describes a string in a Euclidean black hole of 2-dimensional dilaton-gravity, whose target space is a cigar with an asymptotically linear dilaton. This sigma-model description is weakly coupled in the large k limit, and we investigate the saddle-point expansion of the functional integral that computes the reflection coefficient. As in the semi-classical limit of Liouville CFT, we find that one must complexify the functional integral and sum over complex saddles to reproduce the limit of the exact reflection coefficient. Unlike Liouville, the SL(2,R)_k/U(1) CFT admits bound states that manifest as poles of the reflection coefficient. To reproduce them in the semi-classical limit, we find that one must sum over configurations that hit the black hole singularity, but nevertheless contribute to the saddle-point expansion with finite action.

Certain bulk constraints, such as the black hole information paradox, appear to obstruct the existence of a linear map from bulk operators to exact CFT operators that is valid over the entire expected range of validity of the bulk effective theory. By formulating the bulk gravitational physics in the Hartle-Hawking framework to address these nonperturbative IR questions, I will demonstrate, in the context of eternal AdS-Schwarzschild, that the problematic operators fail to satisfy the Hamiltonian constraints nonperturbatively. In this way, the map between bulk effective theory Hartle-Hawking wavefunctions and exact CFT states can be linear on the full Hilbert space.

We revisit the holographic construction of (approximately) local bulk operators inside an eternal AdS black hole in terms of operators in the boundary CFTs. If the bulk operator carries charge, the construction must involve a qualitatively new object: a Wilson line that stretches between the two boundaries of the eternal black hole. This operator - more precisely, its zero mode - cannot be expressed in terms of the boundary currents and only exists in entangled states dual to two-sided geometries, which suggests that it is a state-dependent operator. We determine the action of the Wilson line on the relevant subspaces of the total Hilbert space, and show that it behaves as a local operator from the point of view of either CFT. For the case of three bulk dimensions, we give explicit expressions for the charged bulk field and the Wilson line. Furthermore, we show that when acting on the thermofield double state, the Wilson line may be extracted from a limit of certain standard CFT operator expressions. We also comment on the relationship between the Wilson line and previously discussed mirror operators in the eternal black hole.

We clarify the higher-dimensional origin of a class of dyonic gaugings of $D=4$ ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity recently discovered, when the gauge group is chosen to be ISO(7). This dyonically-gauged maximal supergravity arises from consistent truncation of massive IIA supergravity on $S^6$, and its magnetic coupling constant descends directly from the Romans mass. The critical points of the supergravity uplift to new AdS$_4$ massive type IIA vacua. We identify the corresponding CFT$_3$ duals as super-Chern-Simons-matter theories with simple gauge group SU$(N)$, with level $k$ given by the Romans mass. In particular, we find a critical point that uplifts to the first explicit ${\cal N}=2$ AdS$_4$ massive IIA background. We compute its free energy and that of the candidate dual Chern-Simons theory by localisation to a solvable matrix model, and find perfect agreement. This provides the first AdS$_4$/CFT$_3$ precision match in massive type IIA string theory.

In this work, we investigate modular Hamiltonians defined with respect to arbitrary spatial regions in quantum field theory states which have semi-classical gravity duals. We find prescriptions in the gravity dual for calculating the action of the modular Hamiltonian on its defining state, including its dual metric, and also on small excitations around the state. Curiously, use of the covariant holographic entanglement entropy formula leads us to the conclusion that the modular Hamiltonian, which in the quantum field theory acts only in the causal completion of the region, does not commute with bulk operators whose entire gauge-invariant description is space-like to the causal completion of the region.

In three dimensions, the pure Maxwell theory with compact U(1) gauge group is dual to a free compact scalar, and flows from the Maxwell theory with non-compact gauge group in the ultraviolet to a non-compact free massless scalar theory in the infrared. We compute the vacuum disk entanglement entropy all along this flow, and show that the renormalized entropy F(r) decreases monotonically with the radius r as predicted by the F-theorem, interpolating between a logarithmic growth for small r (matching the behavior of the S^3 free energy) and a constant at large r (equal to the free energy of the conformal scalar). The calculation is carried out by the replica trick, employing the scalar formulation of the theory. The Renyi entropies for n>1 are given by a sum over winding sectors, leading to a Riemann-Siegel theta function. The extrapolation to n=1, to obtain the von Neumann entropy, is done by analytic continuation in the large- and small-r limits and by a numerical extrapolation method at intermediate values. We also compute the leading contribution to the renormalized entanglement entropy of the compact free scalar in higher dimensions. Finally, we point out some interesting features of the reduced density matrix for the compact scalar, and its relation to that for the non-compact theory.

A scalar field in four-dimensional deSitter spacetime (dS_4) has quasinormal modes which are singular on the past horizon of the south pole and decay exponentially towards the future. These are found to lie in two complex highest-weight representations of the dS_4 isometry group SO(4,1). The Klein-Gordon norm cannot be used for quantization of these modes because it diverges. However a modified `R-norm', which involves reflection across the equator of a spatial S^3 slice, is nonsingular. The quasinormal modes are shown to provide a complete orthogonal basis with respect to the R-norm. Adopting the associated R-adjoint effectively transforms SO(4,1) to the symmetry group SO(3,2) of a 2+1-dimensional CFT. It is further shown that the conventional Euclidean vacuum may be defined as the state annihilated by half of the quasinormal modes, and the Euclidean Green function obtained from a simple mode sum. Quasinormal quantization contrasts with some conventional approaches in that it maintains manifest dS-invariance throughout. The results are expected to generalize to other dimensions and spins.

For 3-dimensional field theories with {\cal N}=2 supersymmetry the Euclidean path integrals on the three-sphere can be calculated using the method of localization; they reduce to certain matrix integrals that depend on the R-charges of the matter fields. We solve a number of such large N matrix models and calculate the free energy F as a function of the trial R-charges consistent with the marginality of the superpotential. In all our {\cal N}=2 superconformal examples, the local maximization of F yields answers that scale as N^{3/2} and agree with the dual M-theory backgrounds AdS_4 x Y, where Y are 7-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein spaces. We also find in toric examples that local F-maximization is equivalent to the minimization of the volume of Y over the space of Sasakian metrics, a procedure also referred to as Z-minimization. Moreover, we find that the functions F and Z are related for any trial R-charges. In the models we study F is positive and decreases along RG flows. We therefore propose the "F-theorem" that we hope applies to all 3-d field theories: the finite part of the free energy on the three-sphere decreases along RG trajectories and is stationary at RG fixed points. We also show that in an infinite class of Chern-Simons-matter gauge theories where the Chern-Simons levels do not sum to zero, the free energy grows as N^{5/3} at large N. This non-trivial scaling matches that of the free energy of the gravity duals in type IIA string theory with Romans mass.

There is a family of couplings to the curved background, parameterized by a choice of R-charge, such that supersymmetry is preserved; Z is a function of those parameters. The magnitude of the result is shown to be extremized for the superconformal R-charge of the infrared conformal field theory, in the absence of mixing of the R-symmetry with accidental symmetries. This exactly determines the IR superconformal R-charge.

In four dimensional N=2 supergravity theories, BPS bound states near marginal stability are described by configurations of widely separated constituents with nearly parallel central charges. When the vacuum moduli can be dialed adiabatically until the central charges become anti -parallel, a paradox arises. We show that this paradox is always resolved by the existence of "bound state transformation walls" across which the nature of the bound state changes, although the index does not jump. We find that there are two distinct phenomena that can take place on these walls, which we call recombination and conjugation. The latter is associated to the presence of singularities at finite distance in moduli space. Consistency of conjugation and wall-crossing rules near these singularities leads to new constraints on the BPS spectrum. Singular loci supporting massless vector bosons are particularly subtle in this respect. We argue that the spectrum at such loci necessarily contains massless magnetic monopoles, and that bound states around them transform by intricate hybrids of conjugation and recombination.

The resulting Chern-Simons theories remain conformally invariant, corresponding to the fact that the D6 branes lift to pure geometry in M-theory. The determination of the moduli space relies crucially on the 1-loop contributions to charges and OPE's of monopole operators in these field theories. We find that the generating function for pyramid partitions with a length n ERC is exactly the same as the D6/D2/D0 BPS partition function on the resolved conifold in particular Kaehler chambers. We define a new type of pyramid partition with a finite ERC that counts the BPS degeneracies in certain other chambers.
The D6/D2/D0 partition functions in different chambers were obtained by applying the wall crossing formula. On the other hand, the pyramid partitions describe T^3 fixed points of the moduli space of a quiver quantum mechanics. This quiver arises after we apply Seiberg dualities to the D6/D2/D0 system on the conifold and choose a particular set of FI parameters. The arrow structure of the dual quiver is confirmed by computation of the Ext group between the sheaves. We show that the superpotential and the stability condition of the dual quiver with this choice of the FI parameters give rise to the rules specifying pyramid partitions with length n ERC.
