The space of 6D supergravities with minimal supersymmetry is greatly constrained by anomaly cancellation. Nevertheless, a large number of models satisfy all low-energy consistency conditions and in this work we make progress towards exhaustively enumerating all anomaly-free models with at most one tensor multiplet. Generalizing previous techniques, we describe a general algorithm using multi-hypergraphs and simplicial complexes to systematically enumerate anomaly-free models with gauge groups of any number of simple factors and with hypermultiplets falling into any representations. Using these new ideas, we obtain a \emph{complete} list of anomaly-free models for $T\leq 1$, the only simplifying assumption being that the gauge group contains no $\operatorname{U}(1)$, $\operatorname{SU}(2)$, $\operatorname{SU}(3)$ or $\operatorname{Sp}(2)$ factors. We also study how many/which models in this ensemble satisfy several UV and swampland bounds which have been proposed and previously utilized to great effect, finding that none are ruled out for $T=0$ and $\approx\!50\%$ are inconsistent with quantum gravity for $T=1$.

The constraints arising from anomaly cancellation are particular strong for chiral theories in six dimensions. We make progress towards a complete classification of 6D supergravities with minimal supersymmetry and non-abelian gauge group. First, we generalize a previously known infinite class of anomaly-free theories which has $T\gg 9$ to essentially any semi-simple gauge group and infinitely many choices for hypermultiplets. The construction relies on having many decoupled sectors all selected from a list of four simple theories which we identify. Second, we use ideas from graph theory to rephrase the task of finding anomaly-free theories as constructing cliques in a certain multigraph. A branch-and-bound type algorithm is described which can be used to explicitly construct, in a $T$-independent way, anomaly-free theories with an arbitrary number of simple factors in the gauge group. We implement these ideas to generate an ensemble of $\mathcal{O}(10^7)$ irreducible cliques from which anomaly-free theories may be easily built, and as a special case obtain a complete list of $19,\!847$ consistent theories for $T=0$, for which the maximal gauge group rank is $24$. Modulo $\mathrm{U}(1)$, $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ and $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ simple factors and the new infinite families, we give a complete characterization of anomaly-free theories and show that the bound $T\leq 273$ is sharp.

In this work we study interesting corners of the quantum gravity landscape with 8 supercharges pushing the boundaries of our current understanding. Calabi-Yau threefolds compactifications of F/M/type II theories to 6, 5 and 4 dimensions are the most prominent examples of this class, and these always lead to a universal hypermultiplet coming from the volume/string coupling constant. We find that there are asymmetric orbifold constructions which have no hypermultiplets in 4 or 5 dimensions and no neutral hypers in 6d. We argue that these theories can also be obtained by going to strong coupling/small volume regions of geometric constructions where a new Coulomb branch opens up and moving in this direction freezes the volume/string coupling constant. Interestingly we find that the Kodaira condition encountered in geometric limits of F-theory compactifications to 6 dimensions is violated in these corners of the landscape due to strong quantum corrections. We also construct a theory in 3 dimensions which if it were to arise by toroidal compactifications from 5d, it would have to come from pure ${\mathcal N}=1$ supergravity with no massless scalar fields.

We study various composites of global solitons consisting of domain walls, strings, and monopoles in linear $O(N)$ models with $N=2$ and $3$. Spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) of the $O(N)$ symmetry down to $O(N-1)$ results in the vacuum manifold $S^{N-1}$, together with a perturbed scalar potential in the presence of a small explicit symmetry breaking (ESB) interaction. The $O(2)$ model is equivalent to the axion model admitting topological global (axion) strings attached by $N_{\rm DW}$ domain walls. We point out for the $N_{\rm DW} = 2$ case that the topological stability of the string with two domain walls is ensured by sequential SSBs $(\mathbb{Z}_2)^2 \to \mathbb{Z}_2 \to 1$, where the first SSB occurs in the vacuum leading to the topological domain wall as a mother soliton, only inside which the second SSB occurs giving rise to a subsequent kink inside the mother wall. From the bulk viewpoint, this kink is identical to a global string as a daughter soliton. This observation can be naturally extended to the $O(3)$ model, where a global monopole as a daughter soliton appears as a kink in a mother string or as a vortex on a mother domain wall, depending on ESB interactions. In the most generic case, the stability of the composite system consisting of the monopole, string, and domain wall is understood by the SSB $(\mathbb{Z}_2)^3 \to (\mathbb{Z}_2)^2 \to \mathbb{Z}_2 \to 1$, in which the first SSB at the vacuum gives rise to the domain wall triggering the second one, so that the daughter string appears as a domain wall inside the mother wall triggering the third SSB, which leads to a granddaughter monopole as a kink inside the daughter vortex. We demonstrate numerical simulations for the dynamical evolution of the composite solitons.

We study positivity bounds in the presence of gravity. We first review the gravitational positivity bound at the tree-level, where it is known that a certain amount of negativity is allowed for the coefficients of higher-derivative operators. The size of these potentially negative contributions is estimated for several tree-level, Reggeized gravitational amplitudes which are unitary at high energies and feature the t-channel pole characteristic of graviton exchange. We also argue for the form of the one-loop Regge amplitude assuming that the branch cut structure associated with the exchange of the graviton and higher-spin particles is reflected. We demonstrate how the one-loop Regge amplitude appears by summing over Feynman diagrams. For our one-loop amplitude proposal, the positivity bounds generically receive a finite contribution from the Regge tower and do not lead to a parametrically small bound on the cut-off scale of the low-energy EFT, consistent with recent studies based on sum rules of the amplitude.

Our calculation is performed within the framework of classical Einstein gravity by identifying the Gibbons-Hawking-York term as the membrane action. We show that the energy of the bubble can be given consistently with the Schwarzschild metric. The solution of the consistency condition suggests positive membrane tension, which explains why we do not observe such topological defects in ordinary experiences and also gives a mechanism for suppressing the spacetime with boundary in a dynamical way.

The validity of the Coleman mechanism, which automatically tunes the fundamental constants, is examined in two-dimensional and four-dimensional quantum gravity theories. First, we consider two-dimensional Euclidean quantum gravity on orientable closed manifolds coupled to conformal matter of central charge $c \leq1$. The proper time Hamiltonian of this system is known to be written as a field theory of noncritical strings, which can also be viewed as a third quantization in two dimensions. By directly counting the number of random surfaces with various topologies, we find that the contribution of the baby universes is too small to realize the Coleman mechanism. Next, we consider four-dimensional Lorentzian gravity. Based on the difference between the creation of the mother universe from nothing and the annihilation of the mother universe into nothing, we introduce a non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonian for the multiverse. We show that Coleman's idea is satisfied in this model and that the cosmological constant is tuned to be nearly zero. Potential implications for phenomenology are also discussed.

We present a model to explain the Standard Model flavor hierarchy. Our model is based on explicit smooth confinement (namely confinement without chiral symmetry breaking in a supersymmetric gauge theory) at an intermediate energy scale, before the electroweak symmetry breaking by the Higgs condensation at lower energy. In our context, the smooth confinement preserves the SU(3) and the chiral SU(2)$_L\times$ U(1)$_Y$ symmetry in a supersymmetric Standard Model, while this internal symmetry becomes dynamically gauged in the end. In contrast to Razamat-Tong's symmetric mass generation model also preserving the $G_{\rm SM} \equiv$ SU(3)$_C\times$ SU(2)$_L\times$ U(1)$_Y$ internal symmetry, our model introduces different matter contents with a different kind of superpotential deformation irrelevant at UV, which further induces Yukawa-Higgs terms marginal at IR, breaking the $G_{\rm SM}$ down to SU(3)$_C$ and the electromagnetic U(1)$_{\rm EM}$ only when Higgs condenses. In our model, the IR fermions in the first and second families are composite of UV fields, while the third family elementary fermions match between UV and IR. The smallness of the first and second family fermion masses is explained by the exponential hierarchy between the cutoff scale and the smooth confinement scale via dimensional transmutation. As a result, our UV Lagrangian only contains the natural parameters close to the order one.

A non-vanishing curvature of string generally induce the quantum instability of the current-carrying particle. Its decay rates are explored for various types of model parameters, curved string shapes, and decay processes. As a cosmological application, the stability is examined for superconducting strings in the string network and also for cosmic vortons by evaluating their cosmological evolution. The zero mode and hence the vorton cannot be stable in various cases, e.g., with a hierarchy between the current-carrying particle mass off the string and the string tension or with sizable couplings of the current-carrying particle to light species such as the Standard Model particles.

It has been known that such a state has fractional fermion numbers and is necessarily outside the Fock space on top of ordinary perturbative vacuum, when more than two flavours of charged Dirac fermions are considered. In this paper, we point out that the Fock space of the fermions depends on the rotor degree of freedom of the monopole and changes by a monopole-fermion s-wave scattering. By uplifting the fermion-rotor system introduced by Polchinski, from two to four dimensions, we argue that the outgoing state can be understood as a state in a different Fock space.

The Maxwell equations imply that, under the background of non-zero $\boldsymbol{B}$, varying $θ$ term produces $\boldsymbol{E} \cdot \boldsymbol{B}$. An interesting example is the Witten effect where a magnetic monopole becomes a dyon which, however, should disappear in the exact massless limit of the fermion. Underlying mechanism of this phenomenon has been understood by Callan by the presence of an effective axion-like degree of freedom around the monopole, which is roughly the phase of the fermions. The configuration of this axion cancels the effect of the $θ$ term. Now, the chiral anomaly implies that non-vanishing $\boldsymbol{E} \cdot \boldsymbol{B}$ induces the chiral charge in the system. The question is whether the chiral charge is generated in the massless limit when we take into account the axion-like degree of freedom in the discussion. The discussion is relevant for the mechanism of baryogenesis under the background of time-dependent $θ$. We solve the system of the massless QED with time dependent $θ$ by reducing it to the two-dimensional QED. We demonstrate the occurrence of chiral charge generation in the background of static magnetic field for two cases: a magnetic monopole and a uniform magnetic flux. For the monopole case, the chiral charge comes out from the monopole while canceling the Witten effect. For the case of the uniform flux, on the other hand, the effect of the backreaction cannot be ignored, giving a more non-trivial time dependence. We also discuss their implications on baryogenesis.

While the scale-invariant scalar potential has a topologically trivial vacuum admitting no strings at the classical level, quantum correction allows topologically nontrivial vacua and stable string solutions. We find that the system of the CW potential exhibits significant difference from that of the conventional Abelian-Higgs model with the quadratic-quartic potential. While a single-winding string is qualitatively similar in both systems, and the static intervortex force between two strings at large distance is attractive/repulsive in the type-I/II regime for both, that between two CW-ANO strings exhibits a nontrivial structure. It develops an energy barrier between them at intermediate distance, implying that the string with winding number $n > 1$ can constitute a metastable bound state even in the type-II regime. We name such a superconductor type-$\overline{1.5}$. We also discuss implications to high-energy physics and cosmology.

We find that a $Z$-string is stable in a wide range of parameter space of the two Higgs doublet model due to a split into a pair of two topological $Z$-strings with fractional $Z$ fluxes. This configuration, a bound state of the two strings connected by a domain wall, is called a vortex molecule. Although the vortex molecule has no net topological charge, the locally induced topological charge density is polarized, namely distributed positively around one constituent string and negatively around the other constituent string, leading to the stability of the molecule. We numerically show that the vortex molecule is indeed a stable solution of the equation of motions in a much wider parameter space of the model than the usual axially symmetric $Z$-string in the Standard Model and the two Higgs doublet model, although it is not the case for experimental values of the parameters.

Within the ongoing debate about de Sitter (dS) vacua in string theory, different aspects of explicit dS proposals have come under intense scrutiny. One key ingredient is D7-brane gaugino condensation, which is usually treated using effective 4d supergravity. However, it is clearly more desirable to derive the relevant scalar potential directly from a local 10d Lagrangian. Such a local 10d description captures the interactions among the various localized sources and the background fields which are smeared in the 4d Lagrangian. While progress in this endeavour has recently been made, some form of non-locality related to the 4-gaugino term has remained hidden in the available proposals. We spell out the local counterterm removing the divergence that arises when integrating out the 3-form flux and which, upon dimensional reduction, serves to reproduce the relevant part of the 4d supergravity action. This is both a step towards a more complete understanding of 10d type-IIB supergravity as well as specifically towards better control of dS constructions in string theory involving gaugino condensation.

We study the axion strings with the electroweak gauge flux in the DFSZ axion model and show that these strings, called the electroweak axion strings, can exhibit superconductivity without fermionic zero modes. We construct three types of electroweak axion string solutions. Among them, the string with $W$-flux can be lightest in some parameter space, which leads to a stable superconducting cosmic string. We also show that a large electric current can flow along the string due to the Peccei-Quinn scale much higher than the electroweak scale. This large current induces a net attractive force between the axion strings with the same topological charge, which opens a novel possibility that the axion strings form Y-junctions in the early universe.

We study anomalous chiral symmetry breaking in two-flavour QCD induced by gravitational and QCD-instantons within asymptotically safe gravity within the functional renormalisation group approach. Similarly to QCD-instantons, gravitational ones, associated to a K3-surface connected by a wormhole-like throat in flat spacetime, generate contributions to the 't~Hooft coupling proportional to $\exp(-1/g_N)$ with the dimensionless Newton coupling $g_N$. Hence, in the asymptotically safe gravity scenario with a non-vanishing fixed point coupling $g_N^*$, the induced 't Hooft coupling is finite at the Planck scale, and its size depends on the chosen UV-completion. Within this scenario the gravitational effects on anomalous $U(1)_A$-breaking at the Planck scale may survive at low energy scales. In turn, fermion masses of the order of the Planck scale cannot be present. This constrains the allowed asymptotically safe UV-completion of the Gravity-QCD system. We map-out the parameter regime that is compatible with the existence of light fermions in the low-energy regime.

We find a topologically non-trivial structure of the Nambu monopole in two Higgs doublet model (2HDM), which is a magnetic monopole attached by two topologically stable $Z$ strings ($Z$ flux tubes) from two opposite sides. The structure is in sharp contrast to the topological triviality of the Nambu monopole in the standard model (SM), which is attached by a single non-topological $Z$ string. It is found that the Nambu monopole in 2HDM possesses the same fiber bundle structure with those of the `t Hooft-Polyakov monopole and the Wu-Yang description of the Dirac monopole, as a result of the fact that the electromagnetic gauge field is well-defined even inside the strings and is non-trivially fibered around the monopole, while the Nambu monopole in the SM is topologically trivial because electroweak gauge symmetry is restored at the core of the string. Consequently, the Nambu monopole in 2HDM can be regarded as an embedding of the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole into the $SU(2)_W$ gauge symmetry, and the Dirac's quantization condition always holds, which is absent for the Nambu monopole in the SM. Furthermore, we construct a dyon configuration attached with the two strings.

We find all cases to be qualitatively similar. We also calculate the spin$=2,0$ glueball spectra and show that the glueball masses monotonically decrease as functions of $a_{UV}$ (or $θ$-angle). The slopes of glueball masses are different, generically, in different potentials. In the case of steep dilaton potentials, the glueball (masses)$^2$ turn negative before the maximum of $a_{UV}$ is attained. We interpret this as a signal for a favored instanton condensation in the bulk. We also investigate strong CP-violation in the effective glueball action.

Recently, the problem of unitarity violation during the preheating stage of Higgs inflation with a large non-minimal coupling has been much discussed in the literature. We point out that this problem can be translated into a strong coupling problem for the dimensionless effective coupling, and that the existence of these problems is highly dependent on the choice of higher-dimensional operators because they can significantly change the background dynamics and the canonical normalization of the fluctuations around it. Correspondingly, the typical energy of particles produced during the first stage of preheating can remain comparable to or below the cutoff scale of the theory. As an example, we numerically calculate the particle production in the presence of a specific four-derivative operator of the Higgs field, and confirm the statement above. Our argument also applies to multi-field inflation with non-minimal couplings.

We study the dynamics of the Nambu monopole in two Higgs doublet models, which is a magnetic monopole attached by two topological $Z$ strings ($Z$ flux tubes) from two opposite sides. The monopole is a topologically stable solution of the equation of motions when the Higgs potential has global $U(1)$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetries. In this paper, we consider more general cases without the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, and find that it is no longer a static solution but moves along the $Z$ string being pulled by the heavier string. After analytically constructing an asymptotic form of the monopole, we confirm such a motion using the numerical relaxation method. In addition, we analyze the real time dynamics of the monopole based on a point-like approximation. Consequently, if there were long string networks with the monopoles in the early universe, the monopole accelerates nearly to the speed of light emitting electromagnetic radiations as a synchrotron accelerator, and collides to an anti-monopole on the string. This collision event, which we call the cosmological monopole collider, can produce much heavier particles than those we can see today, e.g., at the Large Hadron Collider.

This scenario could be compatible with the asymptotic safety paradigm for quantum gravity. We search the parameter space so that the model reproduces the observed values such as the Higgs mass, the electroweak vacuum and the relic abundance of dark matter. We also investigate the spin-independent elastic cross section for the Majorana fermions and a nucleon. It is shown that the Majorana fermions as dark matter candidates could be tested by dark matter direct detection experiments such as XENON, LUX and PandaX-II. We demonstrate that within the minimal setup compatible with the flatland scenario at the Planck scale or asymptotically safe quantum gravity, the extended model could have a strong predictability.

We propose a brane-world setup based on gauge/gravity duality that permits the simultaneous realisation of self-tuning of the cosmological constant and a stabilisation of the electroweak hierarchy. The Standard Model dynamics including the Higgs sector is confined to a flat 4-dimensional brane, embedded in a 5-dimensional bulk whose dynamics is governed by Einstein-dilaton-axion gravity. The inclusion of a dynamical bulk axion is new compared to previous implementations of the self-tuning mechanism. Because of the presence of the axion, the model generically exhibits a multitude of static solutions, with different values for the equilibrium position for the brane. Under mild assumptions regarding the dependence of brane parameters on bulk fields, a number of these solutions exhibit electroweak symmetry breaking with a hierarchically small Higgs mass as compared to the cutoff-scale of the brane theory. The realisation of self-tuning of the cosmological constant is generic and as efficient as in previous constructions without a bulk axion. Vacua with a hierarchically small Higgs mass can sometimes be found, regardless of whether the brane theory depends explicitly on the bulk axion. Because it is expected on general principles that the brane action will depend on the axion, the generation of solutions with a large hierarchy is a robust feature.

We investigate the Higgs-Yukawa system with Majorana masses of a fermion within asymptotically safe quantum gravity. Using the functional renormalization group method we derive the beta functions of the Majorana masses and the Yukawa coupling constant and discuss the possibility of a non-trivial fixed point for the Yukawa coupling constant. In the gravitational sector we take into account higher derivative terms such as $R^2$ and $R_{μν}R^{μν}$ in addition to the Einstein-Hilbert term for our truncation. For a certain value of the gravitational coupling constants and the Majorana masses, the Yukawa coupling constant has a non-trivial fixed point value and becomes an irrelevant parameter being thus a prediction of the theory. We also discuss consequences due to the Majorana mass terms to the running of the quartic coupling constant in the scalar sector.

Axionic holographic RG flow solutions are studied in the context of general Einstein-Axion-Dilaton theories. A non-trivial axion profile is dual to the (non-perturbative) running of the $θ$-term for the corresponding instanton density operator. It is shown that a non-trivial axion solution is incompatible with a non-trivial (holographic) IR conformal fixed point. Imposing a suitable axion regularity condition allows to select the IR geometry in a unique way. The solutions are found analytically in the asymptotic UV and IR regimes, and it is shown that in those regimes the axion backreaction is always negligible. The axion backreaction may become important in the intermediate region of the bulk. To make contact with the axion probe limit solutions, a systematic expansion of the solution is developed. Several concrete examples are worked out numerically. It is shown that the regularity condition always implies a finite allowed range for the axion source parameter in the UV. This translates into the existence of a finite (but large) number of saddle-points in the large $N_c$ limit. This ties in well with axion-swampland conjectures.

We analyze a Higgs potential with a global $U(1)$ symmetry and a discrete symmetry $\mathbb{Z}_2$. The monopole is attached by two topological $Z$ strings ($Z$ flux tubes) from both sides. Despite of a trivial second homotopy group, the discrete symmetry $\mathbb{Z}_2$ together with a non-trivial first homotopy group for $Z$ strings topologically ensures the topological stability. After analytically constructing an asymptotic form of such a configuration, we explicitly construct a solution of the equation of motion based on a 3D numerical simulation, in which magnetic fluxes spherically emanating from the monopole at large distances are deformed in the vicinity of the monopole. Since the monopoles are expected to be abundant in the present universe, they might be observed in the current monopole searches.

Some of the most well-celebrated constructions of metastable de Sitter vacua from string theory, such as the KKLT proposal, involve the interplay of gaugino condensation on a D7-brane stack and an uplift by a positive tension object. These constructions have recently been challenged using arguments that rely on the trace-reversed and integrated 10d Einstein equation. We give a critical assessment of such concerns. We first relate an integrated 10d Einstein equation to the extremization condition for a 10d-derived 4d effective potential. Then we argue how to obtain the latter from a 10d action which incorporates gaugino condensation in a (recently proposed) manifestly finite, perfect-square form. This effective potential is consistent with 4d supergravity and does not present obstacles for an uplifted minimum. Moreover, within standard approximations, we understand the uplift explicitly in one of the popular versions of the integrated 10d equation. Our conclusion is that de Sitter constructions of the KKLT type cannot be dismissed simply based on the integrated 10d equations considered so far.

We analyze the structure of gaugino interactions on D7-branes from a 10d perspective. This is essential if one wants to lift the standard 4d approach to type IIB moduli stabilization to 10d. In particular, a 10d picture has recently been used to raise concerns about the KKLT proposal for constructing de Sitter vacua, and to lend support to swampland conjectures against de Sitter. However, the analyses of brane gaugino condensation so far are plagued by UV divergences and do not include local 4-fermion terms. They also fail to reproduce the 4-fermion terms required by supergravity when compactified to four dimensions. Motivated by the structure of heterotic and Horava-Witten theories, we suggest an extension of the brane action by a particular 4-fermion operator that resolves the above problems. Crucially, the UV divergence is cancelled and the expected structure of the 4d effective action is reproduced. We believe that attempts at a 10d description of KKLT have to be reconsidered in this new light.

By studying unitarity and causality constraints on higher derivative corrections to the charge-to-mass ratio of extremal back holes, we demonstrate that heavy extremal black holes can play the role of the required charged state under several assumptions. In particular, our argument is applicable when the higher spin states Reggeizing graviton exchange are subdominant in the photon scattering. It covers (1) theories with light neutral bosons such as dilaton and moduli, and (2) UV completion where the photon and the graviton are accompanied by different sets of Regge states just like open string theory. Our result provides an existence proof of the weak gravity conjecture in a wide class of theories, including generic string theory setups with the dilaton or other moduli stabilized below the string scale.

This regularization is implemented in the Lagrangian level, unlike other gauge-invariant regularizations (eg. the covariant regularizations). We show that the Abelian (fermion number) anomaly is reproduced correctly in this formulation. We also show that once we add the counter terms to the full theory, then the renormalization in the chiral gauge theory is automatically achieved.

By computing the memory effect from the radiation solutions, we explicitly confirm that, in addition to the leading piece, the subleading and subsubleading soft theorems are equivalent to the subleading and subsubleading memory effects, respectively. It is known that the memory effects can be probed by the displacements or kicks of the test particles. We point out that the these memory effects are also probed by the permanent change of the direction of the spin. We also show that the axion memory effect, recently proposed by the current authors, can be detected as the change of the spin of the test particle. We discuss that if we consider the magnetic monopole as an external particle, the parity-odd electromagnetic memory appears.

We investigate asymptotic safety of a toy model of a singlet-scalar extension of the Higgs sector including two real scalar fields under the impact of quantum-gravity fluctuations. Employing functional renormalization group techniques, we search for fixed points of the system which provide a tentative ultraviolet completion of the system. We find that in a particular regime of the gravitational parameter space the canonically marginal and relevant couplings in the scalar sector -- including the mass parameters -- become irrelevant at the ultraviolet fixed point. The infrared potential for the two scalars that can be reached from that fixed point is fully predicted and features no free parameters. In the remainder of the gravitational parameter space, the values of the quartic couplings in our model are predicted. In light of these results, we discuss whether the singlet-scalar could be a dark-matter candidate. Furthermore, we highlight how "classical scale invariance" in the sense of a flat potential of the scalar sector at the Planck scale could arise as a consequence of asymptotic safety.

We show that the two non-compact generators of the ISO(2) algebra correspond respectively to the residual gauge symmetry and its electromagnetic dual gauge symmetry that emerge at null infinity. The former is helicity universal (electric in nature) while the latter is helicity distinguishing (magnetic in nature). Thus, the conventional large gauge transformation is electric in nature, and is naturally associated with a scalar potential. The observed Higgs mass indicates that the Standard Model can be valid up to near the Planck scale $M_\text{P}$. Within this framework, it is important to examine how little modification is necessary to fit the recent experimental results in particle physics and cosmology. As a minimal extension, we consider the possibility that the Higgs field plays the role of inflaton and that the dark matter is the Higgs-portal scalar field. We assume that the extended Standard Model is valid up to the string scale $10^{17}\,\text{GeV}$. (This translates to the assumption that all the non-minimal couplings are not particularly large, $ξ\lesssim 10^2$, as in the critical Higgs inflation, since $M_\text{P}/\sqrt{10^2}\sim 10^{17}\,\text{GeV}$.) We find a correlated theoretical bound on the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ and the dark matter mass $m_\text{DM}$. As a result, the Planck bound $r<0.09$ implies that the dark-matter mass must be smaller than 1.1\,TeV, while the PandaX-II bound on the dark-matter mass $m_\text{DM}>0.7\pm0.2\,\text{TeV}$ leads to $r\gtrsim 2\times10^{-3}$. Both are within the range of near-future detection. When we include the right-handed neutrinos of mass $M_\text{R}\sim 10^{14}$\,GeV, the allowed region becomes wider, but we still predict $r\gtrsim 10^{-3}$ in the most of the parameter space. The most conservative bound becomes $r>10^{-5}$ if we allow three-parameter tuning of $m_\text{DM}$, $M_\text{R}$, and the top-quark mass.

The soft pion theorem is written as the Ward-Takahashi identities of the $S$-matrix under asymptotic transformations. We investigate the asymptotic dynamics, and find that the conservation of charges generating the asymptotic transformations can be interpreted as a pion memory effect.

The requirement for an ultraviolet completable theory to be well-behaved upon compactification has been suggested as a guiding principle for distinguishing the landscape from the swampland. Motivated by the weak gravity conjecture and the multiple point principle, we investigate the vacuum structure of the standard model compactified on $S^1$ and $T^2$. The measured value of the Higgs mass implies, in addition to the electroweak vacuum, the existence of a new vacuum where the Higgs field value is around the Planck scale. We explore two- and three-dimensional critical points of the moduli potential arising from compactifications of the electroweak vacuum as well as this high scale vacuum, in the presence of Majorana/Dirac neutrinos and/or axions. We point out potential sources of instability for these lower dimensional critical points in the standard model landscape. We also point out that a high scale $AdS_4$ vacuum of the Standard Model, if exists, would be at odd with the conjecture that all non-supersymmetric $AdS$ vacua are unstable. We argue that, if we require a degeneracy between three- and four-dimensional vacua as suggested by the multiple point principle, the neutrinos are predicted to be Dirac, with the mass of the lightest neutrino O(1-10) meV, which may be tested by future CMB, large scale structure and $21$cm line observations.

Recently, Grabowska and Kaplan suggested a non-perturbative formulation of a chiral gauge theory, which consists of the conventional domain-wall fermion and a gauge field that evolves by the gradient flow from one domain wall to the other. In this paper, we discuss the U(1) axial-vector current in 4 dimensions using this formulation. We introduce two sets of domain-wall fermions belonging to complex conjugate representations so that the effective theory is a 4-dimensional vector-like gauge theory. Then, as a natural definition of the axial-vector current, we consider a current that generates the simultaneous phase transformations for the massless modes in 4 dimensions. However, this current is exactly conserved and does not reproduce the correct anomaly. In order to investigate this point precisely, we consider the mechanism of the conservation. We find that this current includes not only the axial current on the domain wall but also a contribution from the bulk, which is non-local in the sense of 4-dimensional fields. Therefore, the local current is obtained by subtracting the bulk contribution from it.

We point out that LGT charges in quantum electrodynamics are in fact one of non-compact generators of the two dimensional Euclidean group. Moreover, by comparing two equivalent descriptions of gauge transformation, we suggest that LGT is simply another way of describing the gauged little group for massless soft photons.

The beta functions are derived by utilizing the functional renormalization group, and non-trivial fixed points are found. It turns out that all couplings in gravity sector, namely the cosmological constant, the Newton constant, and the $R^2$ and $R_{μν}^2$ coupling constants, are relevant in case of higher derivative pure gravity. For the Higgs-Yukawa model non-minimal coupled with higher derivative gravity, we find a stable fixed point at which the scalar-quartic and the Yukawa coupling constants become relevant. The relevant Yukawa coupling is crucial to realize the finite value of the Yukawa coupling constants in the standard model.

We find that gravitational memory is parametrized by a BMS-like supertranslation in the static patch of de Sitter spacetime. We also show a diffeomorphism that corresponds to gravitational memory in the Poincare/cosmological patch. Our method does not need to assume the separation between the source and the detector to be small compared with the Hubble radius, and can potentially be applicable to other FLRW universes, as well as "ordinary memory" mediated by massive messenger particles.

We consider the prescription dependence of the Higgs effective potential under the presence of general nonminimal couplings. We evaluate the fermion loop correction to the effective action in a simplified Higgs-Yukawa model whose path integral measure takes simple form either in the Jordan or Einstein frame. The resultant effective action becomes identical in both cases when we properly take into account the quartically divergent term coming from the change of measure. Working in the counterterm formalism, we clarify that the difference between the prescriptions I and II comes from the counter term to cancel the logarithmic divergence. This difference can be absorbed into the choice of tree-level potential from the infinitely many possibilities, including all the higher-dimensional terms. We also present another mechanism to obtain a flat potential by freezing the running of the effective quartic coupling for large field values, using the nonminimal coupling in the gauge kinetic function.
