In addition, the decay widths and branching ratios of several decay channels are obtained by using the calculated form factors. These decay processes include the nonleptonic decays of $B_c^- \to η_c π^-$, $η_c K^-$, $η_c ρ^-$, $η_c K^{*-}$, $B_c^- \to J/ψπ^-$, $J/ψK^-$, $J/ψρ^-$, $J/ψK^{*-}$, and the semileptonic decays of $B_c^- \to η_c \mathcal{l} \barν$, $B_c^- \to J/ψ\mathcal{l} \barν$. These results about the form factors and decay properties of $B_c$ meson provide useful information for us to study the heavy-quark dynamics and find new physics(NP) beyond Standard Model(SM).

Thermal properties of quantum fields at finite temperature are crucial to understanding strongly interacting matter and recent development in quantum computing has provided an alternative and promising avenue of study. In this work, we study thermal field theories involving only fermions using quantum algorithms. We first delve into the presentations of fermion fields via qubits on digital quantum computers alongside the quantum algorithms such as quantum imaginary time evolutions employed to evaluate thermal properties of generic quantum field theories. Specifically, we show numerical results such as the thermal distribution and the energy density of thermal field theories for Majorana fermions in 1+1 dimensions using quantum simulators. In addition to free field theory, we also study the effects of interactions resulting from coupling with a spatially homogeneous Majorana field. In both cases, we show analytically that thermal properties of the system can be described using phase-space distributions, and the quantum simulation results agree with analytical and semiclassical expectations. Our work is an important step to understand thermal fixed points, preparing for quantum simulation of thermalization in real time.

For the $Σ_c^*\barΣ$ system, it is most likely to form bound states with mass around 3.7 GeV in the $I(J^P)=0(2^-)$ and $1(2^-)$ channels.

The former is calculated using a dispersion relation, supplemented with chiral perturbation theory results for the ${\mathbb B}{\mathbb B}ππ$ couplings and the Muskhelishvili-Omn\` es representation for the $ππ$ rescattering. Explicitly, the coupling constants are obtained as $g_{NNσ}=8.7_{-1.9}^{+1.7}$, $g_{ΣΣσ}=3.5_{-1.3}^{+1.8}$, $g_{ΞΞσ}=2.5_{-1.4}^{+1.5}$, and $g_{ΛΛσ}=6.8_{-1.7}^{+1.5}$. These coupling constants can be used in the one-boson-exchange model calculations of the interaction of light baryons with other hadrons.

We first assemble a full set of the Boltzmann Equation in Diffusion Approximation (BEDA) for studying thermalization/hydrodynamization as well as the production of massless quarks and antiquarks in out of equilibrium systems. In the BEDA, the time evolution of a generic system is characterized by the following space-time dependent quantities: the jet quenching parameter, the effective temperature, and two more for each quark flavor that describe the conversion between gluons and quarks/antiquarks via the $2\leftrightarrow2$ processes. Out of the latter two quantities, an effective net quark chemical potential is defined, which equals the net quark chemical potential after thermal equilibration. We then study thermalization and the production of three flavors of massless quarks and antiquarks in spatially homogeneous systems initially filled only with gluons. A parametric understanding of thermalization and quark production is obtained for either initially very dense or dilute systems, which are complemented by detailed numerical simulations for intermediate values of initial gluon occupancy $f_0$. For a wide range of $f_0$, the final equilibration time is determined to be about one order of magnitude longer than that in the corresponding pure gluon systems. Moreover, during the final stage of the thermalization process for $f_0\geq 10^{-4}$, gluons are found to thermalize earlier than quarks and antiquarks, undergoing the top-down thermalization.

We study transverse momentum anisotropies, in particular, the elliptic flow $v_2$ due to the interference effect sourced by valence quarks in high-energy hadron-hadron collisions. Our main formula is derived as the high-energy (eikonal) limit of the impact-parameter dependent cross section in quantum field theory, which agrees with that in terms of the impact parameter in the classical picture. As a quantitative assessment of the interference effect, we calculate $v_2$ in the azimuthal distribution of gluons at a comprehensive coverage of the impact parameter and the transverse momentum in high-energy pion-pion collisions. In a broad range of the impact parameter, a sizable amount of $v_2$, comparable with that produced due to saturated dense gluons or final-state interactions, is found to develop. In our calculations, the valence sector of the pion wave function is obtained numerically from the Basis Light-Front Quantization, a non-perturbative light-front Hamiltonian approach. And our formalism is generic and can be applied to other small collision systems like proton-proton collisions.

The rate equation has two main transport parameters, i.e., the equilibrium limit and reaction rate for each state. The temperature-dependent equilibrium limits include charm- and bottom-quark fugacities based on their initial production. The reaction rates for charmonia, bottomonia and $B_c$ rely on charm- and bottom-quark masses as well as binding energies from a thermodynamic $T$-matrix approach. For the X(3872) particle, its internal structure information is encoded in reaction rates and initial conditions in the hadronic phase via two different scenarios: a loosely bound hadronic molecule vs. a compact diquark-antidiquark tetraquark.

More than a century after the performance of the oil drop experiment, the possible existence of fractionally charged particles FCP still remains unsettled. The search for FCPs is crucial for some extensions of the Standard Model in particle physics. Most of the previously conducted searches for FCPs in cosmic rays were based on experiments underground or at high altitudes. However, there have been few searches for FCPs in cosmic rays carried out in orbit other than AMS-01 flown by a space shuttle and BESS by a balloon at the top of the atmosphere. In this study, we conduct an FCP search in space based on on-orbit data obtained using the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) satellite over a period of five years. Unlike underground experiments, which require an FCP energy of the order of hundreds of GeV, our FCP search starts at only a few GeV. An upper limit of $6.2\times 10^{-10}~~\mathrm{cm^{-2}sr^{-1} s^{-1}}$ is obtained for the flux. Our results demonstrate that DAMPE exhibits higher sensitivity than experiments of similar types by three orders of magnitude that more stringently restricts the conditions for the existence of FCP in primary cosmic rays.

The azimuthal angular decorrelation of a vector boson and jet is sensitive to QCD radiation, and can be used to probe the quark-gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions. By using a recoil-free jet definition, the sensitivity to contamination from soft radiation on the measurement is reduced, and the complication of non-global logarithms is eliminated from our theoretical calculation. Specifically we will consider the $p_T^n$ recombination scheme, as well as the $n\to \infty$ limit, known as the winner-take-all scheme. These jet definitions also significantly simplify the calculation for a track-based measurement, which is preferred due to its superior angular resolution. We present a detailed discussion of the factorization in Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, revealing why the transverse momentum $\vec q_T$ is more complicated than the azimuthal angle. We show that potential glauber contributions do not spoil our factorization formalism, at least up to and including order $α_s^3$. The resummation is carried out using the renormalization group, and all necessary ingredients are collected or calculated. We conclude with a detailed phenomenological study, finding an enhanced matching correction for high jet $p_T$ due to the electroweak collinear enhancement of a boson emission off di-jets. We also compare with the Pythia event generator, finding that our observable is very robust to hadronization and the underlying event.

The production of $J/ψ$ mesons in heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider is believed to be dominated by the recombination of charm and anti-charm quarks in a hot QCD medium. However, measurements of the elliptic flow ($v_2$) of $J/ψ$ mesons in these reactions are not well described by existing calculations of $J/ψ$ recombination for transverse momenta $p_T\geq$4 GeV. Here, we revisit these calculations in two main aspects. By employing the resonance recombination model, we implement distribution functions of charm quarks transported through the quark-gluon plasma using state-of-the-art Langevin simulations, and we account for the space-momentum correlations of the diffusing charm and anti-charm quarks in the hydrodynamically expanding fireball. These improvements extend the relevance of the recombination processes to substantially larger momenta than before. In addition, we revisit the suppression of the primordially produced $J/ψ$ mesons by propagating them through the same hydrodynamic medium, leading to a marked increase of the $v_2$ of this component over previous estimates. Combining these developments into a calculation of the $p_T$-dependent nuclear modification factor and $v_2$ of inclusive $J/ψ$ production in semi-central Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC, we find a good description of the experimental results by the ALICE collaboration. Our results thus resolve the above-mentioned $v_2$ puzzle and imply the relevance of recombination processes for $p_T$'s of up to $\sim$8 GeV.

In $f(R)$ gravity, the metric, presented in the form of the multipole expansion, for the external gravitational field of a spatially compact supported source up to $1/c^3$ order is provided, where $c$ is the velocity of light in vacuum. The metric consists of General Relativity-like part and $f(R)$ part, where the latter is the correction to the former in $f(R)$ gravity. At the leading pole order, the metric can reduce to that for a point-like or ball-like source. For the gyroscope moving around the source without experiencing any torque, the multipole expansions of its spin's angular velocities of gravitoelectric-type precession, gravitomagnetic-type precession, $f(R)$ precession, and Thomas precession are all derived. The first two types of precession are collectively called General Relativity-like precession, and the $f(R)$ precession is the correction in $f(R)$ gravity. At the leading pole order, these expansions can recover the results for the gyroscope moving around a point-like or ball-like source. If the gyroscope has a nonzero four-acceleration, its spin's total angular velocity of precession up to $1/c^3$ order in $f(R)$ gravity is the same as that in General Relativity.

We first revisit impact-parameter dependent collisions of ultra-relativistic particles in quantum field theory. Two conditions sufficient for defining an impact-parameter dependent cross section are given, which could be violated in proton-proton collisions. By imposing these conditions, a general formula for the impact-parameter dependent cross section is derived. Then, using soft-collinear effective theory, we derive a factorization formula for the impact-parameter dependent cross section for inclusive hard processes with only colorless final-state products in hadron and nuclear collisions. It entails defining thickness beam functions, which are Fourier transforms of transverse phase-space parton distribution functions. By modelling non-perturbative modes in thickness beam functions of large nuclei in heavy-ion collisions, the factorization formula confirms the cross section in the Glauber model for hard processes. Besides, the factorization formula is verified up to one loop in perturbative QCD for the inclusive Drell-Yan process in quark-antiquark collisions at a finite impact parameter.

Deciphering the origin of collective phenomena in small colliding systems is one of contemporary focuses in heavy-ion physics. It entails penetrating the barrier between two previously separated research topics: thermalization/hydrodynamization and phenomenological studies of collectivity. I first review some recent progress in understanding thermalization/hydrodynamization in large colliding systems, centralized on bottom-up thermalization. Then, using a simple kinetic theory I demonstrate how the investigation of hydrodynamization is intertwined with the study of flow in small colliding systems. Connections of these studies to "hard probes" are also commented where possible.

The observation of fluid-like behavior in nucleus-nucleus, proton-nucleus and high-multiplicity proton-proton collisions motivates systematic studies of how different measurements approach their fluid-dynamic limit. We have developed numerical methods to solve the ultra-relativistic Boltzmann equation for systems of arbitrary size and transverse geometry. Here, we apply these techniques for the first time to the study of azimuthal flow coefficients $v_n$ including non-linear mode-mode coupling and to an initial condition with realistic event-by-event fluctuations. We show how both linear and non-linear response coefficients extracted from $v_n$ develop as a function of opacity from free streaming to perfect fluidity. We note in particular that away from the fluid-dynamic limit, the signal strength of linear and non-linear response coefficients does not reduce uniformly, but that their hierarchy and relative size shows characteristic differences.

We overcome intrinsic limitations of previous studies by using a recoil-free axis, achieving unprecedented next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy with small nonperturbative corrections. This choice of axis also makes the observable robust in the presence of a large background. Furthermore, the azimuthal angle distribution is minimally changed when determined using only charged particle tracks, which offer superior angular resolution for precise measurements. Our effective field theory includes full jet dynamics, and we find contributions from linearly-polarized gluon transverse momentum distributions in the initial and final state.

Electron-positron pair production in frequency modulated Sauter potential wells is investigated in the framework of the computational quantum field theory. In combined potential wells with a static Sauter potential well and a frequency modulated oscillating one, the modulated amplitude has a large effect on the number of created pairs. The optimal modulation amplitude of frequency at different center frequencies is obtained, which increases the number of electrons at about two times. However, for a single oscillating potential well with frequency modulation, chirp effect is sensitive to the center frequency, and the number of electrons can be enhanced even to four orders of magnitude at a regime of low center frequency. It implies that for a slowly oscillating Sauter potential well, the chirp effect through the frequency modulation is better than adding a static potential well to improve the pair production.

Electron-positron pair production, in combined Sauter potential wells and an oscillating one is imposed on a static Sauter potential, is investigated by using the computational quantum field theory. We find that the gain number (the difference of pair number under combined potentials to the simple addition of pair number for each potential) of the created pairs depends strongly on the depth of static potential and the frequency of oscillating potential. In particular, it is more sensitive to the frequency compared with the depth. For the low-frequency multiphoton regime, the gaining is almost positive and exhibits interesting nonlinear characteristics on both depth and frequency. For the single-photon regime, however, the gaining is almost negative and decreases near linearly with depth while it exhibits an oscillation characteristic with frequency. Furthermore, the optimal frequency and depth of gain number are found and discussed.

We present a detailed timing study of the brightest persistent X-ray source Sco X-1 using the data collected by the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope ($Insight$-HXMT) from July 2017 to August 2018. A complete $Z$-track hardness-intensity diagram (HID) is obtained. The normal branch oscillations (NBOs) at $\sim$ 6 Hz in the lower part of the normal branch (NB) and the flare branch oscillations (FBOs) at $\sim$ 16 Hz in the beginning part of the flaring branch (FB) are found in observations with the Low Energy X-ray Telescope (LE) and the Medium Energy X-ray Telescope (ME) of $Insight$-HXMT, while the horizontal branch oscillations (HBOs) at $\sim$ 40 Hz and the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) at $\sim$ 800 Hz are found simultaneously up to 60 keV for the first time on the horizontal branch (HB) by the High Energy X-ray Telescope (HE) and ME. We find that for all types of the observed QPOs, the centroid frequencies are independent of energy, while the root mean square (rms) increases with energy; the centroid frequencies of both the HBOs and kHz QPOs increase along the $Z$-track from the top to the bottom of the HB; and the NBOs show soft phase lags increasing with energy. A continuous QPO transition from the FB to NB in $\sim$ 200 s are also detected. Our results indicate that the non-thermal emission is the origin of all types of QPOs, the innermost region of the accretion disk is non-thermal in nature, and the corona is nonhomogeneous geometrically.

Whether, how, and to what extent solutions of Bjorken-expanding systems become insensitive to aspects of their initial conditions is of importance for heavy-ion collisions. Here we study 1+1D and phenomenologically relevant boost-invariant 3+1D systems in which initial conditions approach a universal attractor solution. In Israel-Stewart theory (IS) and kinetic theory where the universal attractor extends to arbitrarily early times, we show that all initial conditions approach the attractor at early times by a power-law while their approach is exponential at late times. In these theories, the physical mechanisms of hydrodynamization operational at late times do not drive the approach to the attractor at early times, and the early-time attractor is reached prior to hydrodynamization. In marked contrast, the attractor in strongly coupled systems is realized concurrent with hydrodynamization. This qualitative difference may offer a basis for discriminating weakly and strongly coupled scenarios of heavy-ion collisions.

To study the microscopic structure of quark-gluon plasma, data from hadronic collisions must be confronted with models that go beyond fluid dynamics. Here, we study a simple kinetic theory model that encompasses fluid dynamics but contains also particle-like excitations in a boost invariant setting with no symmetries in the transverse plane and with large initial momentum asymmetries. We determine the relative weight of fluid dynamical and particle like excitations as a function of system size and energy density by comparing kinetic transport to results from the 0th, 1st and 2nd order gradient expansion of viscous fluid dynamics. We then confront this kinetic theory with data on azimuthal flow coefficients over a wide centrality range in PbPb collisions at the LHC, in AuAu collisions at RHIC, and in pPb collisions at the LHC. Evidence is presented that non-hydrodynamic excitations make the dominant contribution to collective flow signals in pPb collisions at the LHC and contribute significantly to flow in peripheral nucleus-nucleus collisions, while fluid-like excitations dominate collectivity in central nucleus-nucleus collisions at collider energies.

Electron-positron pair production in an oscillating Sauter potential is investigated in the framework of the computational quantum field theory. It is found that for a Sauter potential well with oscillating width and depth simultaneously, the phase difference between them has a great impact on the number of created electron-positron pairs. Optimal values of the phase difference corresponding to different oscillation frequencies are obtained. The optimal phase difference has a strong nonlinear dependence on oscillating frequency. When the potential well changes slowly, our results can be explained by the instantaneous bound states. For the higher frequency case, however, multiphoton effect is enhanced and the Pauli blocking effect has a strong inhibitory effect on pair creations. These results can provide a theoretical reference for the experimental creation of the electron-positron pairs.

Using renormalization group techniques and soft-collinear effective theory, we resum logarithms $\log(Q/q_T)$ and $\log R$ at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy including the non-global logarithms, where $Q$ and $R$ are respectively the hard scattering energy and the radius of the jet. Specifically, we investigate two scenarios of $p^J_T \lesssim m_V$ or $p^J_T \gtrsim m_V$ in $Z$+jet events, and we examine the $q_T$ distributions with different jet radii and study the effect of non-global logarithms. In the end we compare our theoretical calculations with Monte Carlo simulations and data from the LHC.

We study the phenomenon of transverse momentum broadening for a high-$p_T$ parton propagating through a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal expansion. We propose a boost-invariant description for this phenomenon, in which the broadening refers to the angular variables $η$ (the pseudo-rapidity) and $φ$ (the azimuthal angle). The jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$ which enters this description depends upon the proper time alone. We furthermore consider radiative corrections to $\hat q$. As in the case of a static medium, we find potentially large corrections enhanced by a double logarithm. But unlike for the static medium, these corrections are now local in time: they depend upon the local (proper) time characterizing the expansion, and not upon the overall path length. We resum such corrections to all orders into a renormalized jet quenching parameter. The main effect of this resummation is to slow down the decrease of $\hat q$ with increasing proper time.

The observation of large azimuthal anisotropies $v_n$ in the particle spectra of proton-proton (pp) and proton-nucleus (pA) collisions challenges fluid dynamic interpretations of $v_n$, as it remains unclear how small collision systems can hydrodynamize and to what extent hydrodynamization is needed to build up $v_n$. Here, we study in a simple kinetic theory how the same physics that leads to hydrodynamization in large systems represents itself in small systems. We observe that one third to one half of the elliptic flow signal seen in fully hydrodynamized systems can be built up in collisions that extend over only one mean free path $l_{\rm mfp}$ and that do not hydrodynamize. This is qualitatively in line with observing a sizeable $v_2$ in $pp$ collisions for which other characteristics of soft multi-particle production seem well-described in a free-streaming picture. We further expose a significant system size dependence in the accuracy of hybrid approaches that match kinetic theory to viscous fluid dynamics. The implications of these findings for a reliable extraction of shear viscosity are discussed.

Non-linearities in the harmonic spectra of hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions provide evidence for the dynamical response to azimuthal spatial eccentricities. Here, we demonstrate within the framework of transport theory that even the mildest interaction correction to a picture of free-streaming particle distributions, namely the inclusion of one perturbatively weak interaction ("one-hit dynamics"), will generically give rise to all observed linear and non-linear structures. We further argue that transport theory naturally accounts within the range of its validity for realistic signal sizes of the linear and non-linear response coefficients observed in azimuthal momentum anisotropies with a large mean free path of the order of the system size in peripheral ($\sim 50 \%$ centrality) PbPb or central pPb collisions. The shear viscosity to entropy density ratio $η/s$ of such a transport theory is approximately an order of magnitude larger than that of an almost perfect fluid. The phenomenological success of transport simulations thus challenges the perfect fluid paradigm of ultra-relativistic nucleus-nucleus and hadron-nucleus collisions.

High energy cosmic ray electrons plus positrons (CREs), which lose energy quickly during their propagation, provide an ideal probe of Galactic high-energy processes and may enable the observation of phenomena such as dark-matter particle annihilation or decay. The CRE spectrum has been directly measured up to $\sim 2$ TeV in previous balloon- or space-borne experiments, and indirectly up to $\sim 5$ TeV by ground-based Cherenkov $γ$-ray telescope arrays. Evidence for a spectral break in the TeV energy range has been provided by indirect measurements of H.E.S.S., although the results were qualified by sizeable systematic uncertainties. Here we report a direct measurement of CREs in the energy range $25~{\rm GeV}-4.6~{\rm TeV}$ by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) with unprecedentedly high energy resolution and low background. The majority of the spectrum can be properly fitted by a smoothly broken power-law model rather than a single power-law model. The direct detection of a spectral break at $E \sim0.9$ TeV confirms the evidence found by H.E.S.S., clarifies the behavior of the CRE spectrum at energies above 1 TeV and sheds light on the physical origin of the sub-TeV CREs.

To understand the dynamics of thermalization in heavy ion collisions in the perturbative framework it is essential to first find corrections to the free-streaming classical gluon fields of the McLerran-Venugopalan model. The corrections that lead to deviations from free streaming (and that dominate at late proper time) would provide evidence for the onset of isotropization (and, possibly, thermalization) of the produced medium. To find such corrections we calculate the late-time two-point Green function and the energy-momentum tensor due to a single $2 \to 2$ scattering process involving two classical fields. To make the calculation tractable we employ the scalar $\varphi^4$ theory instead of QCD. We compare our exact diagrammatic results for these quantities to those in kinetic theory and find disagreement between the two. The disagreement is in the dependence on the proper time $τ$ and, for the case of the two-point function, is also in the dependence on the space-time rapidity $η$: the exact diagrammatic calculation is, in fact, consistent with the free streaming scenario. Kinetic theory predicts a build-up of longitudinal pressure, which, however, is not observed in the exact calculation. We conclude that we find no evidence for the beginning of the transition from the free-streaming classical fields to the kinetic theory description of the produced matter after a single $2 \to 2$ rescattering.

We adapt the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism to study heavy-ion collisions in perturbative QCD. Employing the formalism, we calculate the two-point gluon correlation function $G_{22}^{aμ,bν}$ due to the lowest-order classical gluon fields in the McLerran-Venugopalan model of heavy ion collisions and observe an interesting transition from the classical fields to the quasi-particle picture at later times. Motivated by this observation, we push the formalism to higher orders in the coupling and calculate the contribution to $G_{22}^{aμ,bν}$ coming from the diagrams representing a single rescattering between two of the produced gluons. We assume that the two gluons go on mass shell both before and after the rescattering. The result of our calculation depends on the ordering between the proper time of the rescattering $τ_Z$ and the proper time $τ$ when the gluon distribution is measured. For (i) $τ_Z\gg 1/Q_s$ and $τ-τ_Z\gg 1/Q_s$ (with $Q_s$ the saturation scale) we obtain the same results as from the Boltzmann equation. For (ii) $τ-τ_Z\gg τ_Z\gg 1/Q_s$ we end up with a result very different from kinetic theory and consistent with a picture of "free-streaming" particles. Due to the approximations made, our calculation is too coarse to indicate whether the ordering (i) or (ii) is the correct one: to resolve this controversy, we shall present a detailed diagrammatic calculation of the rescattering correction in the $\varphi^4$ theory in the second paper of this duplex.

We study the dijet azimuthal de-correlation in relativistic heavy ion collisions as an important probe of the transverse momentum broadening effects of a high energy jet traversing the quark-gluon plasma. We take into account both the soft gluon radiation in vacuum associated with the Sudakov logarithms and the jet P_T-broadening effects in the QCD medium. We find that the Sudakov effects are dominant at the LHC, while the medium effects can play an important role at RHIC energies. This explains why the LHC experiments have not yet observed sizable P_T-broadening effects in the measurement of dijet azimuthal correlations in heavy ion collisions. Future investigations at RHIC will provide a unique opportunity to study the P_T-broadening effects and help to pin down the underlying mechanism for jet energy loss in a hot and dense medium.

We present the complete physical picture for the evolution of a high-energy jet propagating through a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP) by analytical and numerical investigation of thermalization of the soft components of the jet. Our results support the following physical picture: the leading particle emits a significant number of mini-jets which promptly evolve via multiple branching and thus degrade into a myriad of soft gluons, with energies of the order of the medium temperature $T$. Via elastic collisions with the medium constituents, these soft gluons relax to local thermal equilibrium with the plasma over a time scale which is considerably shorter than the typical lifetime of the mini-jet. The thermalized gluons form a tail which lags behind the hard components of the jet. Together with the background QGP, they behave hydrodynamically.

I give a self-contained review on radiative p_T-broadening and radiative energy loss of high-energy partons in QCD matter. The typical p_T^2 of high-energy partons receives a double logarithmic correction due to the recoiling effect of medium-induced gluon radiation. Such a double logarithmic term, averaged over the path length of the partons, can be taken as the radiative correction to the jet quenching parameter qhat and hence contributes to radiative energy loss. This has also been confirmed by detailed calculations of energy loss by radiating two gluons.

In this work we discuss the capability of HERD to detect monochromatic $γ$-ray lines, based on simulations of the detector performance. It is shown that HERD will be one of the most sensitive instruments for monochromatic $γ$-ray searches at energies between $\sim10$ to a few hundred GeV. Above hundreds of GeV, Cherenkov telescopes will be more sensitive due to their large effective area. As a specific example, we show that a good portion of the parameter space of a supersymmetric dark matter model can be probed with HERD.

We complete the physical picture for the evolution of a high-energy jet propagating through a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma by investigating the thermalization of the soft components of the jet. We argue that the following scenario should hold: the leading particle emits a significant number of mini-jets which promptly evolve via quasi-democratic branchings and thus degrade into a myriad of soft gluons, with energies of the order of the medium temperature T. Via elastic collisions with the medium constituents, these soft gluons relax to local thermal equilibrium with the plasma over a time scale which is considerably shorter than the typical lifetime of the mini-jet. The thermalized gluons form a tail which lags behind the hard components of the jet. We support this scenario, first, via parametric arguments and, next, by studying a simplified kinetic equation, which describes the jet dynamics in longitudinal phase-space. We solve the kinetic equation using both (semi-)analytical and numerical methods. In particular, we obtain the first exact, analytic, solutions to the ultrarelativistic Fokker-Planck equation in one-dimensional phase-space. Our results confirm the physical picture aforementioned and demonstrate the quenching of the jet via multiple branching followed by the thermalization of the soft gluons in the cascades.

A simple kinematical argument suggests that the classical approximation may be inadequate to describe the evolution of a system with an anisotropic particle distribution. In order to verify this quantitatively, we study the Boltzmann equation for a longitudinally expanding system of scalar particles interacting with a $φ^4$ coupling, that mimics the kinematics of a heavy ion collision at very high energy. We consider only elastic $2\to 2$ scatterings, and we allow the formation of a Bose-Einstein condensate in overpopulated situations by solving the coupled equations for the particle distribution and the particle density in the zero mode. For generic CGC-like initial conditions with a large occupation number and a moderate coupling, the solutions of the full Boltzmann equation do not follow a classical attractor behavior.

We use a discrete worldline representation in order to study the continuum limit of the one-loop expectation value of dimension two and four local operators in a background field. We illustrate this technique in the case of a scalar field coupled to a non-Abelian background gauge field. The first two coefficients of the expansion in powers of the lattice spacing can be expressed as sums over random walks on a d-dimensional cubic lattice. Using combinatorial identities for the distribution of the areas of closed random walks on a lattice, these coefficients can be turned into simple integrals. Our results are valid for an anisotropic lattice, with arbitrary lattice spacings in each direction.

We study the Boltzmann equation with elastic point-like scalar interactions in two different versions of the the classical approximation. Although solving numerically the Boltzmann equation with the unapproximated collision term poses no problem, this allows one to study the effect of the ultraviolet cutoff in these approximations. This cutoff dependence in the classical approximations of the Boltzmann equation is closely related to the non-renormalizability of the classical statistical approximation of the underlying quantum field theory. The kinetic theory setup that we consider here allows one to study in a much simpler way the dependence on the ultraviolet cutoff, since one has also access to the non-approximated result for comparison.

The generalized Baier-Dokshitzer-Mueller-Peigne-Schiff-Zakharov (BDMPS-Z) formalism is used to calculate energy loss due to multiple gluon emission. With L the length of the matter and l_0 the size of constituents of the matter we find a double logarithmic correction proportional to ln^2(L/l_0) to parton energy loss due to two-gluon emission. We also show that the radiative energy loss per unit length -dE/dz = alpha_s N_c < p_T^2 >/12 by carrying out a resummation of the double logarithmic terms. Here, the transverse momentum broadening <p_T^2> is obtained by resumming terms proportional to alpha_s ln^2(L/l_0) in Ref. [11]. Our result agrees with that by the renormalization of qhat proposed in Refs. [13,14].

In this paper, we study the thermalization of gluons and N_f flavors of massless quarks and antiquarks in a spatially homogeneous system. First, two coupled transport equations for gluons and quarks (and antiquarks) are derived within the diffusion approximation of the Boltzmann equation, with only 2<-> 2 processes included in the collision term. Then, these transport equations are solved numerically in order to study the thermalization of the quark-gluon plasma. At initial time, we assume that no quarks or antiquarks are present and we choose the gluon distribution in the form f = f_0 theta (1-p/Q_s) with Q_s the saturation momentum and f_0 a constant. The subsequent evolution of systems may, or may not, lead to the formation of a (transient) Bose condensate, depending on the value of f_0. In fact, we observe, depending on the value of f_0, three different patterns: (a) thermalization without gluon Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) for f_0 < f_{0t}, (b) thermalization with transient BEC for f_{0t} < f_0 < f_{0c}, and (c) thermalization with BEC for f_{0c} < f_0. The values of f_{0t} and f_{0c} depend on N_f. When f_0> 1 > f_{0c}, the onset of BEC occurs at a finite time t_c ~ 1/((alpha_s f_0)^2 Q_s). We also find that quark production slows down the thermalization process: the equilibration time for N_f = 3 is typically about 5 to 6 times longer than that for N_f = 0 at the same Q_s.

In this paper, we discuss questions related to the renormalizability of the classical statistical approximation, an approximation scheme that has been used recently in several studies of out-of-equilibrium problems in Quantum Field Theory. Although the ultraviolet power counting in this approximation scheme is identical to that of the unapproximated quantum field theory, this approximation is not renormalizable. The leading cause of this non-renormalizability is the breakdown of Weinberg's theorem in this approximation. We also discuss some practical implications of this negative result for simulations that employ this approximation scheme, and we speculate about a possible modification of the classical statistical approximation in order to systematically subtract the leading residual divergences.

We use a (slight) extension of a formalism developed by B. Zakharov for studying energy loss, a formalism which, for much of our calculation, reduces to a simple dipole scattering analysis. We estimate the radiative contribution to be a sizable correction to the nonradiative value of $\avg{p_{\perp}^{2}}$. We also carry out a resummation of the double logarithmic terms that we find, and we briefly discuss running coupling effects which appear here in a rather unusual way.
