Infrared subtraction algorithms beyond next-to-leading order necessitate the analysis of multiple infrared limits of scattering amplitudes, where several particles sequentially become soft or collinear. In this contribution, we report on the study performed in arXiv:2403.11975, which investigates these limits from the perspective of infrared factorisation, offering general definitions for strongly-ordered soft and collinear kernels, expressed in terms of gauge-invariant operator matrix elements. These definitions facilitate the identification of local subtraction counterterms for strongly-ordered configurations, whose integrals are designed to cancel the IR poles of real-virtual counterterms. This framework is validated at tree level for multiple emissions, and at one loop for single and double emissions.

We consider neutral- and charged-current Drell Yan lepton-pair production at hadron colliders, and include dominant classes of electroweak and mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to all orders in perturbation theory. The accurate description of these physical effects is vital for a precise determination of fundamental Standard Model parameters, such as the $W$-boson mass and the electroweak mixing angle, as well as for a solid assessment of the associated theoretical uncertainties. Our state-of-the-art resummation reaches next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy in both the electroweak and the mixed QCD-electroweak perturbative expansions, including constant terms at first order beyond Born level in both couplings, i.e. at order $α$ and $α_s α$. These effects are incorporated on top of QCD predictions at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy, which include constant terms at third order in the strong coupling. Our results retain, for the first time at this accuracy, full dependence on the kinematics of the final-state leptons, thereby enabling a realistic comparison with experimental analyses at the differential level in presence of fiducial cuts. We present a phenomenological analysis of the impact of electroweak corrections in relevant observables at the LHC. We find visible shape distortions in resummation-dominated kinematical regions with respect to pure-QCD predictions, highlighting the importance of a complete description, not limited to QCD, for precision Drell Yan physics.

In the context of infrared subtraction algorithms beyond next-to-leading order, it becomes necessary to consider multiple infrared limits of scattering amplitudes, in which several particles become soft or collinear in a strongly-ordered sequence. We study these limits from the point of view of infrared factorisation, and we provide general definitions of strongly-ordered soft and collinear kernels in terms of gauge-invariant operator matrix elements. With these definitions in hand, it is possible to construct local subtraction counterterms for strongly-ordered configurations. Because of their factorised structure, these counterterms cancel infrared poles of real-virtual contributions by construction. We test these ideas at tree level for multiple emissions, and at one loop for single and double emissions, contributing to NNLO and N3LO distributions, respectively.

We introduce an observable relevant for the determination of the $W$-boson mass $m_W$ at hadron colliders. This observable is defined as an asymmetry around the jacobian peak of the charged-lepton transverse-momentum distribution in the charged-current Drell-Yan process. We discuss the observable's theoretical prediction, presenting results at different orders in QCD, and showing its perturbative stability. Its definition as a single scalar number and its linear sensitivity to $m_W$ allow a clean extraction of the latter and a straightforward discussion of the associated theoretical systematics: a perturbative QCD uncertainty of ${\cal O}(\pm 5)$ MeV on $m_W$ can be established by means of this observable, relying solely on charged-current Drell-Yan information. Owing to its relatively inclusive nature, the observable displays desirable properties also from the experimental viewpoint, especially for the unfolding of detector effects. We show that a measurement of this observable can lead to a competitive experimental error on $m_W$ at the LHC.

We use the Local Analytic Sector Subtraction scheme to construct a completely analytic set of expressions implementing a fully local infrared subtraction at NNLO for generic coloured massless final states. The cancellation of all explicit infrared poles appearing in the double-virtual contribution, in the real-virtual correction and in the integrated local infrared counterterms is explicitly verified, and all finite contributions arising from integrated local counterterms are analytically evaluated in terms of ordinary polylogarithms up to weight three. The resulting subtraction formula can readily be implemented in any numerical framework containing the relevant matrix elements up to NNLO.

For both quantities, we find the results obtained with the different setups to be compatible with each other within the quoted uncertainty, highlighting the robustness of the theoretical prediction. We examine current experimental results by the CMS collaboration in the context of a dimension-8 extension of the Standard Model in an effective-field-theory formalism. We show that constraints from vector-boson-fusion Higgs-pair production on operators that modify the Standard Model VVHH interactions are already comparable with or more stringent than those quoted in the analysis of vector-boson-scattering final states. We study the modifications of such constraints when introducing unitarity bounds, and investigate the potential of new experimental final states, such as ZHH associated production. The Drell-Yan process at hadron colliders is a fundamental benchmark for the study of strong interactions and the extraction of electro-weak parameters. The outstanding precision of the LHC demands very accurate theoretical predictions with a full account of fiducial experimental cuts. In this letter we present a state-of-the-art calculation of the fiducial cross section and of differential distributions for this process at third order in the strict fixed-order expansion in the strong coupling, as well as including the all-order resummation of logarithmic corrections. Together with these results, we present a detailed study of the subtraction technique used to carry out the calculation for different sets of experimental cuts, as well as of the sensitivity of the fiducial cross section to infrared physics. We find that residual theory uncertainties are reduced to the percent level and that the robustness of the predictions can be improved by a suitable adjustment of fiducial cuts.

We perform a next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N$^3$LL) resummation of such observables in momentum space according to the RadISH formalism, consistently including in our prediction all constant terms of relative order $α_s^3$ with respect to the Born, thereby achieving N$^3$LL$^\prime$ accuracy. The calculation is fully exclusive with respect to the Born kinematics, which allows the application of arbitrary fiducial selection cuts on the decay products of the colour singlet. We supplement our results with a transverse-recoil prescription, accounting for dominant classes of subleading-power corrections in a fiducial setup. The resummed predictions are matched with fixed-order differential spectra at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy. A phenomenological comparison is carried out with 13 TeV LHC data relevant to the Higgs to di-photon channel, as well as to neutral Drell-Yan lepton-pair production. Overall, the inclusion of ${\cal O}(α_s^3)$ constant terms, and to a lesser extent of transverse-recoil effects, proves beneficial for the comparison of theoretical predictions to data, leaving a residual theoretical uncertainty in the resummation region at the 2-5% level for Drell-Yan observables, and 5-7% in Higgs production.

As a first practical application of such a prescription, that we dub MC@NLO-$Δ$, we have implemented it in the MadGraph5_aMC@NLO framework, by employing the Pythia8 Monte Carlo. We present selected MC@NLO-$Δ$ results at the 13 TeV LHC, and compare them with MC@NLO ones. We find that the former predictions are consistent with the latter ones within the typical matching systematics, and that the reduction of negative-weight events is significant.

We start from the factorised structure of virtual corrections to scattering amplitudes, where soft and collinear divergences are organised in gauge-invariant matrix elements of fields and Wilson lines, and we define radiative eikonal form factors and jet functions which are fully differential in the radiation phase space, and can be shown to cancel virtual poles upon integration by using completeness relations and general theorems on the cancellation of infrared singularities. We present precise matched predictions for transverse-momentum distributions in Higgs boson (H) and Drell-Yan pair (DY) production as well as for the closely related ${φ^{*}_η}$ distribution at the LHC. The calculation is exclusive in the Born kinematics, and allows for arbitrary fiducial selection cuts on the decay products of the colour singlets, which is of primary relevance for experimental analyses. Our predictions feature very small residual scale uncertainties and display a good convergence of the perturbative series. A comparison of the predictions for DY observables to experimental data at 8 TeV shows a very good agreement within the quoted errors.

We present an approach to the momentum-space resummation of global, recursive infrared and collinear safe observables featuring kinematic zeros away from the Sudakov limit. In the hadro-production of a generic colour singlet, we consider the family of inclusive observables which do not depend on the rapidity of the radiation, prime examples being the transverse momentum of the singlet, and $φ^*$ in Drell-Yan pair production. We derive a resummation formula valid up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logaritmic accuracy for the considered observables. This formula reduces exactly to the customary resummation performed in impact-parameter space in the known cases, and it also predicts the correct power-behaved scaling of the cross section in the limit of small value of the observable. We show how this formalism is efficiently implemented by means of Monte Carlo techniques in a fully exclusive generator that allows one to apply arbitrary cuts on the Born variables for any colour singlet, as well as to automatically match the resummed results to fixed-order calculations. As a phenomenological application, we present state-of-the-art predictions for the Higgs-boson transverse-momentum spectrum at the LHC at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy matched to fixed next-to-next-to-leading order.

This Report summarizes the results of the activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group in the period 2014-2016. The main goal of the working group was to present the state-of-the-art of Higgs physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first part compiles the most up-to-date predictions of Higgs boson production cross sections and decay branching ratios, parton distribution functions, and off-shell Higgs boson production and interference effects. The second part discusses the recent progress in Higgs effective field theory predictions, followed by the third part on pseudo-observables, simplified template cross section and fiducial cross section measurements, which give the baseline framework for Higgs boson property measurements. The fourth part deals with the beyond the Standard Model predictions of various benchmark scenarios of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, extended scalar sector, Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and exotic Higgs boson decays. This report follows three previous working-group reports: Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002), Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002), and Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 3. Higgs properties (CERN-2013-004). The current report serves as the baseline reference for Higgs physics in LHC Run 2 and beyond.

We perform the computation in both the four-flavour and the five-flavour schemes, whose results we compare extensively at the level of exclusive observables. In the case of the Higgs transverse momentum, we also consider the analytically-resummed cross section up to the NNLO+NNLL accuracy. In addition, we analyse at ${\cal O}(α_S^3)$ the effects of the interference between the $b\bar{b}H$ and gluon-fusion production modes.

We discuss the theoretical bases that underpin the automation of the computations of tree-level and next-to-leading order cross sections, of their matching to parton shower simulations, and of the merging of matched samples that differ by light-parton multiplicities. We present a computer program, MadGraph5_aMC@NLO, capable of handling all these computations -- parton-level fixed order, shower-matched, merged -- in a unified framework whose defining features are flexibility, high level of parallelisation, and human intervention limited to input physics quantities. We demonstrate the potential of the program by presenting selected phenomenological applications relevant to the LHC and to a 1-TeV $e^+e^-$ collider. While next-to-leading order results are restricted to QCD corrections to SM processes in the first public version, we show that from the user viewpoint no changes have to be expected in the case of corrections due to any given renormalisable Lagrangian, and that the implementation of these are well under way.

We present predictions for the SM-Higgs-pair production channels of relevance at the LHC: gluon-gluon fusion, VBF, and top-pair, W, Z and single-top associated production. All these results are at the NLO accuracy in QCD, and matched to parton showers by means of the MC@NLO method; hence, they are fully differential. With the exception of the gluon-gluon fusion process, for which a special treatment is needed in order to improve upon the infinite-top-mass limit, our predictions are obtained in a fully automatic way within the publicly available MadGraph5_aMC@NLO framework. We show that for all channels in general, and for gluon-gluon fusion and top-pair associated production in particular, NLO corrections reduce the theoretical uncertainties, and are needed in order to arrive at reliable predictions for total rates as well as for distributions.

Several sample applications are presented which show, in particular, that beyond-leading-order effects in QCD have non-trivial phenomenological implications.

The first working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002) focuses on predictions (central values and errors) for total Higgs production cross sections and Higgs branching ratios in the Standard Model and its minimal supersymmetric extension, covering also related issues such as Monte Carlo generators, parton distribution functions, and pseudo-observables. We present a study of lνb\bar{b} and l+ l- b\bar{b} production at hadron colliders. Our results, accurate to the next-to-leading order in QCD, are based on automatic matrix-element calculations performed by MadLoop and MadFKS, and are given at both the parton level, and after the matching with the Herwig event generator, achieved with aMC@NLO. We retain the complete dependence on the bottom-quark mass, and include exactly all spin correlations of final-state leptons. We discuss the cases of several observables at the LHC which highlight the importance of accurate simulations.

Abstract:
We present the calculation of scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs production in association with a top-antitop pair to the next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in QCD, interfaced with parton showers according to the MC@NLO formalism. We apply our results to the cases of light and very light Higgs boson production at the LHC, giving results for total rates as well as for sample differential distributions…

We present the calculation of scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs production in association with a top-antitop pair to the next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in QCD, interfaced with parton showers according to the MC@NLO formalism. We apply our results to the cases of light and very light Higgs boson production at the LHC, giving results for total rates as well as for sample differential distributions, relevant to the Higgs, to the top quarks, and to their decay products. This work constitutes the first phenomenological application of aMC@NLO, a fully automated approach to complete event generation at NLO in QCD.

This is the user's manual of MC@NLO 4.0. This package is a practical implementation, based upon the Fortran HERWIG and Herwig++ event generators, of the MC@NLO formalism, which allows one to incorporate NLO QCD matrix elements consistently into a parton shower framework. Processes available in this version include the hadroproduction of single vector and Higgs bosons, vector boson pairs, heavy quark pairs, single top, single top in association with a W, single top in association with a charged Higgs in type I or II 2HDM models, lepton pairs, and Higgs bosons in association with a W or Z. Spin correlations are included for all processes except ZZ production. This document is self-contained, but we emphasise the main differences with respect to previous versions.

Abstract:
We present the calculations necessary to obtain next-to-leading order QCD precision with the Herwig++ event generator using the MC@NLO approach, and implement them for all the processes that were previously available from Fortran HERWIG with MC@NLO. We show a range of results comparing the two implementations. With these calculations and recent developments in the automatic generation of NLO matri…

We show a range of results comparing the two implementations. With these calculations and recent developments in the automatic generation of NLO matrix elements, it will be possible to obtain NLO precision with Herwig++ for a much wider range of processes

Matching NLO QCD computations with PYTHIA using MC@NLO
Authors:

Abstract:
We present the matching between a next-to-leading order computation in QCD and the PYTHIA parton shower Monte Carlo, according to the MC@NLO formalism. We study the case of initial-state radiation, and consider in particular single vector boson hadroproduction.
