We provide supporting details for the search for a 3+1 sterile neutrino using data collected over eleven years at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. Several improvements were made over past analyses, which are reviewed in this article, including upgrades to the reconstruction and the study of sources of systematic uncertainty. We provide details of the fit quality and discuss stability tests that split the data for separate samples, comparing results. We find that the fits are consistent between split data sets.

This Letter presents the result of a 3+1 sterile neutrino search using 10.7 years of IceCube data. We analyze atmospheric muon neutrinos that traverse the Earth with energies ranging from 0.5 to 100 TeV, incorporating significant improvements in modeling neutrino flux and detector response compared to earlier studies. Notably, for the first time, we categorize data into starting and through-going events, distinguishing neutrino interactions with vertices inside or outside the instrumented volume, to improve energy resolution. The best-fit point for a 3+1 model is found to be at $\sin^2(2θ_{24}) = 0.16$ and $Δm^{2}_{41} = 3.5$ eV$^2$, which agrees with previous iterations of this study. The result is consistent with the null hypothesis of no sterile neutrinos with a p-value of 3.1\%.

We study the late time behavior of the scalar part of the volume modulus and the dilaton in stringy quintessence model, focusing on their contributions to the Hubble slow-roll parameter $ε$ which directly measures the deviation of the spacetime geometry from de Sitter space. When only one of the moduli is allowed to move, $ε$ converges to the stable fixed point at late time. The fixed point value is larger than $1$, thus the slow-roll cannot be realized. Moreover, if the decay rate of the quintessence potential is larger than some critical value, the positivity of the potential imposes that the stable fixed point value is just given by $3$, independent of the details of the moduli dynamics. Otherwise, the fixed point value coincides with the potential slow-roll parameter. When both the volume modulus and the dilaton roll down the potential simultaneously, we can find the relation between the contributions of two moduli to $ε$ satisfied at the fixed point. In this case, the fixed point value is not in general the simple sum of fixed point values in the single field case and cannot be larger than $3$.

We study the implication of the distance and the cobordism conjecture on the 6-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory compactified on $S^2$. In this toy model, the radion potential is stabilized by the conspiracy of the curvature of $S^2$ and the flux through $S^2$ parametrized by $f$, and uplifted by the positive 6-dimensional cosmological constant parametrized by $λ$. When $λ=0$, the radion is stabilized at the anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacuum, which cannot be interpolated to the Minkowski vacuum since the Kaluza-Klein (KK) tower descends from UV in the vanishing limit of the 4-dimensional cosmological constant. For nonzero $λ$ which realizes the metastable de Sitter (dS) vacuum, as well as the AdS and the Minkowski vacuum, such an obstruction can be found provided the combination $f^2λ$ is fixed and the limit $λ\to 0$ is taken. Moreover, the 6-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory allows the transition between vacua through the nucleation of the bubble. In this case, the values of the 4-dimensional cosmological constant inside and outside the bubble are different as $f$ is changed at the bubble wall, while $λ$ remains unchanged. Regarding the AdS vacuum with the vanishing curvature radius as the `nothing', we find that the transition from the metastable dS vacuum to the nothing is not prevented by the descent of the KK tower since $f^2λ$ is not fixed.

We investigate the connection between the distance conjecture and the uplift potential. For this purpose, we consider the concrete model, the warped deformed conifold embedded into Type IIB flux compactifications, with the uplift potential produced by $\overline{\rm D3}$-branes at the tip of the throat. Whereas the various mass scales associated with towers of states can be found, it turns out that the lightest tower mass scale satisfies the scaling behavior with respect to the uplift potential, which is meaningful provided the number of $\overline{\rm D3}$-branes is nonzero. This indicates that the effective theory becomes invalid in the vanishing limit of the uplift potential by the descent of an infinite tower of states from UV, as predicted in the distance conjecture. Since too large uplift potential is also problematic due to the runaway behavior of the moduli potential as well as the sizeable backreaction of $\overline{\rm D3}$-branes, the uplift potential is bounded from both above and below. In the simple model like the KKLT or the large volume scenario in which non-perturbative effect is dominatd by the single term, this bound can be rewritten as the bound on the size of the superpotential.

When the slow-roll parameter $ε_H$ is smaller than $H^2/M_{\rm Pl}^2$, the quantum fluctuations of the inflaton after the horizon crossing are large enough to realize eternal inflation. Whereas they do not generate a sufficient amount of density fluctuation of the inflaton to produce the black hole in quasi-de Sitter space, they can also generate the sizeable density fluctuation of the radiation when the number of degrees of freedom increases rapidly in time, as predicted by the distance conjecture. We argue that the condition that the density fluctuation of the radiation is not large enough to produce the black hole until the end of inflation is equivalent to the no eternal inflation condition. When the radiation emitted by the horizon does not produce the black hole, even if the number of degrees of freedom increases in time, the information paradox does not arise for $ε_H$ larger than $10^{-7} (H^2/ M_{\rm Pl}^2)$ and time scale shorter than $10^4 (M_{\rm Pl}/H^2)$. Regardless of the presence of the information paradox, a static observer cannot retrieve a sufficient amount of information, which is consistent with the complementarity.

We study the implications of the FL bound on the UV behavior of the Higgs potential for a miniscule vacuum energy, as in the current universe. We also present values of the Hubble parameter and the Higgs vacuum expectation value allowed by the FL bound during inflation, which implies that the Higgs cannot stay at the electroweak scale during this epoch.

The Cohen-Kaplan-Nelson (CKN) bound formulates the condition that black hole is not produced by the low energy effective field theory dynamics. In de Sitter space it also constrains the maximal size of the matter distribution to be smaller than the cosmological horizon determined by black hole. On the other hand, the swampland distance conjecture (SDC) predicts that de Sitter space becomes unstable by the descent of the low energy degrees of freedom from UV. This results in the rapid increase in the energy inside the cosmological horizon, the distribution of which can be constrained by the CKN bound. We study the CKN bound in de Sitter space in detail and point out that when compared with the slow-roll in the inflation, the bound on the slow-roll parameter which forbids the eternal inflation is obtained.

We study the condition for the dilaton stabilization in Type IIB flux compactifications consistent with the KKLT scenario. Since the Gukov-Vafa-Witten superpotential depends linearly on the dilaton, the dilaton mass squared is given by a sum of the gravitino mass squared and additional terms determined by the complex structure moduli stabilization. If the dilaton mass is not much enhanced from the gravitino mass, the mass mixing with the Kähler modulus in the presence of the non-perturbative effect generates the saddle point at the supersymmetric field values, hence the potential becomes unstable. When the complex structure moduli other than the conifold modulus are neglected, the saddle point problem arises over the controllable parameter space. We also point out that the dilaton stabilization condition is equivalent to the condition on the NS 3-form fluxes, $|H_{(1,2)}| > | H_{(0,3)}|$.

We argue that the mode function solution of a scalar field in four-dimensional dS can be separated into the incoming and outgoing modes. Different vacua for dS are realized by different combinations of positive frequency modes assigned to each solution. For a minimally coupled massless scalar field, we explicitly compute the behavior of the mode function and the corresponding energy-momentum tensor in the Unruh vacuum near the horizon, and find that the horizon area increases (decreases) in time when the incoming (outgoing) mode contributes to thermal flux.

The Wheeler-DeWitt equation provides the probability distribution for the curvature perturbation, the gauge invariant quantum fluctuation of the inflaton. From this, we can find a tower of power spectra which is not found in a perturbative approach. Since the power spectrum for the modes that cross the horizon contributes to the uncertainty in the classical inflaton displacement, we obtain new conditions for eternal inflation. In the presence of the patch in the higher excitations, the bound on the slow-roll parameter allowing eternal inflation is given by at most $ε\lesssim (2n+1)(H/m_{\rm Pl})^2$ with $n$ integer indicating the quantum number labelling the excitation. For large $n$, the bound on $ε$ is relaxed such that eternal inflation can take place with even larger value of $ε$. While the second law of thermodynamics implies that $n=0$ state is preferred, we cannot ignore such large $n$ effect since the nonlinear interaction inducing transitions to the $n=0$ state is suppressed.

We study the Wigner function for the inflationary tensor perturbation defined in the real phase space. We compute explicitly the Wigner function including the contributions from the cubic self-interaction Hamiltonian of tensor perturbations. Then we argue that it is no longer an appropriate description for the probability distribution in the sense that quantum nature allows negativity around vanishing phase variables. This comes from the non-Gaussian wavefunction in the mixed state as a result of the non-linear interaction between super- and sub-horizon modes. We also show that this is related to the explicit infrared divergence in the Wigner function, in contrast to the trace of the density matrix.

We interpret the de Sitter swampland conjecture in the thermodynamic point of view. When the number of degrees of freedom is enhanced as the modulus rolls down the potential, the bound on $m_{\rm Pl} \nabla V/V$ is equivalent to the condition for the positive temperature phase. The boundary between the positive- and the negative temperature phases is preferred by the classical system since the entropy density is maximized. The distance conjecture imposes that (quasi-)de Sitter spacetime is entirely in the negative temperature phase and statistically disfavored. By investigating the concave potential, we also justify the bound on $m_{\rm Pl}^2 \nabla^2 V/V$.

We study the quantum mechanical evolution of the tensor perturbations during inflation with non-linear tensor interactions. We first obtain the Lindblad terms generated by non-linear interactions by tracing out unobservable sub-horizon modes. Then we calculate explicitly the reduced density matrix for the super-horizon modes, and show that the probability of maintaining the unitarity of the squeezed state decreases in time. The decreased probability is transferred to other elements of the reduced density matrix including off-diagonal ones, so the evolution of the reduced density matrix describes the quantum-to-classical transition of the tensor perturbations. This is different from the classicality accomplished by the squeezed state, the suppression of the non-commutative effect, which is originated from the quadratic, linear interaction, and also maintains the unitarity. The quantum-to-classical transition occurs within 5 - 10 e-folds, faster than the curvature perturbation.

It connects both the dark photon and the axion (or axion-like particle) to the photon simultaneously through an anomaly triangle. While the vector portal and the axion portal have been popular venues to search for the dark photon and axion, respectively, the new portal provides new detection channels if they coexist. The dark axion portal is not a result of the simple combination of the two portals, and its value is not determined by the other portal values; it should be tested independently. In this paper, we discuss implications of the new portal for the leptonic g-2, B-factories, fixed target neutrino experiments, and beam dumps. We show that the two non-compact generators of the ISO(2) algebra correspond respectively to the residual gauge symmetry and its electromagnetic dual gauge symmetry that emerge at null infinity. The former is helicity universal (electric in nature) while the latter is helicity distinguishing (magnetic in nature). Thus, the conventional large gauge transformation is electric in nature, and is naturally associated with a scalar potential. We suggest that the electric Aharonov-Bohm effect is a direct measure for the electromagnetic memory arising from large gauge transformations.

We study the jet activity that accompanies the production by gluon fusion of a new physics scalar particle decaying into photons at the LHC. In the considered scenarios, both the production and decay mechanisms are governed by loop-induced interactions involving a heavy colored state. We show that the presence of large new physics contributions to the inclusive diphoton invariant-mass spectrum always implies a significant production rate of non-standard diphoton events containing extra hard jets. We investigate the existence of possible handles that could provide a way to obtain information on the underlying physics behind the scalar resonance, and this in a wide mass window.

We formulate the gauge fixing conditions based on the Poisson brackets of the constraints, from which we derive two convenient gauges that are appropriate for multi-field inflation. We then adopt the in-in formalism to derive the most general expression for the power spectrum of the curvature perturbation including the corrections from the interactions of the curvature mode with other light degrees of freedom. We also discuss the contributions of the interactions to the bispectrum.

It is shown that the real angles of the right-handed unitary matrix diagonalizing the mass matrix can be determined to fit the Particle Data Group data. However, the phase in the right-handed unitary matrix is not constrained very much. We also includes an argument about allocating the Jarlskog phase in the CKM matrix. Phenomenologically, there are three classes of possible parametrizations, $\delq=α,β,$ or $γ$ of the unitarity triangle. For the choice of $\delq=α$, the phase is close to a maximal one.

Dark matter density is determined by a thermal freeze-out of the $3\to2$ self-annihilation process, thanks to the Wess-Zumino-Witten term. In the presence of a gauge kinetic mixing between the dark photon and the SM hypercharge gauge boson, dark mesons can undergo a sufficient scattering off the Standard Model particles and keep in kinetic equilibrium until freeze-out in this SIMP scenario. Taking the SU(N_f)xSU(N_f)/SU(N_f) flavor symmetry under the SU(N_c) confining group, we show how much complementary the SIMP constraints on the parameters of the dark photon are for current experimental searches for dark photon.

Recent discovery of the SM-like Higgs boson with $m_h\simeq 125$ GeV motivates an extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), which involves a singlet Higgs superfield with a sizable Yukawa coupling to the doublet Higgs superfields. We examine such singlet-extended SUSY models with a Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry that originates from an anomalous $U(1)_A$ gauge symmetry. We focus on the specific scheme that the PQ symmetry is spontaneously broken at an intermediate scale $v_{\rm PQ}\sim \sqrt{m_{\rm SUSY}M_{\rm Pl}}$ by an interplay between Planck scale suppressed operators and tachyonic soft scalar mass $m_{\rm SUSY}\sim \sqrt{D_A}$ induced dominantly by the $U(1)_A$ $D$-term, $D_A$. This scheme also results in spontaneous SUSY breaking in the PQ sector, generating the gaugino masses $M_{1/2}\sim \sqrt{D_A}$ when it is transmitted to the MSSM sector by the conventional gauge mediation mechanism. As a result, the MSSM soft parameters in this scheme are induced mostly by the $U(1)_A$ $D$-term and the gauge mediated SUSY breaking from the PQ sector, so that the sparticle masses can be near the present experimental bounds without causing the SUSY flavor problem. The scheme is severely constrained by the condition that a phenomenologically viable form of the low energy operators of the singlet and doublet Higgs superfields is generated by the PQ breaking sector in a way similar to the Kim-Nilles solution of the $μ$ problem, and the resulting Higgs mass parameters allow the electroweak symmetry breaking with small $\tanβ$. We find two minimal models with two singlet Higgs superfields, satisfying this condition with a relatively simple form of the PQ breaking sector, and briefly discuss some phenomenological aspects of the model.

The QCD axion solving the strong CP problem may originate from antisymmetric tensor gauge fields in compactified string theory, with a decay constant around the GUT scale. Such possibility appears to be ruled out now by the detection of tensor modes by BICEP2 and the PLANCK constraints on isocurvature density perturbations. A more interesting and still viable possibility is that the string theoretic QCD axion is charged under an anomalous U(1)_A gauge symmetry. In such case, the axion decay constant can be much lower than the GUT scale if moduli are stabilized near the point of vanishing Fayet-Illiopoulos term, and U(1)_A-charged matter fields get a vacuum value far below the GUT scale due to a tachyonic SUSY breaking scalar mass. We examine the symmetry breaking pattern of such models during the inflationary epoch with the Hubble expansion rate 10^{14} GeV, and identify the range of the QCD axion decay constant, as well as the corresponding relic axion abundance, consistent with known cosmological constraints. In addition to the case that the PQ symmetry is restored during inflation, there are other viable scenarios, including that the PQ symmetry is broken during inflation at high scales around 10^{16}-10^{17} GeV due to a large Hubble-induced tachyonic scalar mass from the U(1)_A D-term, while the present axion scale is in the range 10^{9}-5\times 10^{13} GeV, where the present value larger than 10^{12} GeV requires a fine-tuning of the axion misalignment angle. We also discuss the implications of our results for the size of SUSY breaking soft masses.

We study the Higgs phenomenology in the Peccei-Quinn invariant NMSSM (PQ-NMSSM) where the low energy mass parameters of the singlet superfield are induced by a spontaneous breakdown of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry. In the generic NMSSM, scalar mixing among CP-even Higgs bosons is constrained by the observed properties of the SM-like Higgs boson, as well as by the LEP bound on the chargino mass and the perturbativity bound on the singlet Yukawa coupling. In the minimal PQ-NMSSM, scalar mixing is further constrained due to the presence of a light singlino-like neutralino. It is noticed that the $2σ$ excess of the LEP $Zb\bar b$ events at $m_{b\bar b}\simeq$ 98 GeV can be explained by a singlet-like 98 GeV Higgs boson in the minimal PQ-NMSSM with low $\tanβ$, stops around or below 1 TeV, and light doublet-higgsinos around the weak scale.

We consider the right-handed neutrino supermultiplets as messengers in addition to the usual gauge mediation to obtain sizeable tri-linear soft parameters $A_t$ needed for the maximal stop mixing. Neutrino messengers can explain the observed Higgs mass for stop mass around 1 TeV. Neutrino assistance can also generate charged lepton flavor violation including $μ\to e γ$ as a possible signature of the neutrino messengers. We consider $S_4$ discrete flavor model and show the relation of the charged lepton flavor violation, $θ_{13}$ of neutrino oscillation and muon $g-2$.

This case is realized when some superfields carrying nonvanishing Peccei-Quinn charges develop both scalar VEVs and F-terms. In this case, we present a proper definition of axion and axino. With this definition, we present the QCD axino mass in the most general framework, including non-minimal Kähler potential. The axino mass is known to have a hierarchical mass structure depending on accidental symmetries. With only one axino, if $G_A=0$ where $G=K+\ln|W|^2$, we obtain $m_{\tilde a}=m_{3/2}$. For $G_A\ne 0$, the axino mass depends on the details of the Kähler potential. In the gauge mediation scenario, the gaugino mass is the dominant axino mass parameter. Therefore, we can take the theoretical QCD axino mass as a free parameter in the study of its cosmological effects, ranging from eV to multi-TeV scales, without a present knowledge on its ultraviolet completion.

For the $(ab)$ unitarity triangle, the base line (x-axis) is defined from the product of the first row elements, $V_{1a}V^*_{1b}$, and the angle between two sides at the origin is defined to be the phase $δ$. This is a useful definition since every Jarlskog triangle has the angle $δ$ at the origin, defined directly from the unitarity condition. It is argued that $δ$ represents the barometer of the weak CP violation, which can be used to relate it to possible Yukawa textures.

Recently, the D0 collaboration reported a large CP violation in the same-sign dimuon charge asymmetry which has the $3.2 σ$ deviation from the value estimated in the Standard Model. In this paper, several new physics models are considered: the MSSM, two Higgs doublet model, the recent dodeca model, and a new $Z'$ model. Generally, it is hard to achieve such a large CP violation consistently with other experimental constraints. We find that a scheme with extra non-anomalous U(1)$'$ gauge symmetry is barely consistent. In general, the extra $Z'$ gauge boson induces the flavor changing neutral current interactions at tree level, which is the basic reason allowing a large new physics CP violation. To preserve the U(1)$'$ symmetry at high energy, SU(2)$_L$ singlet exotic heavy quarks of mass above 1 TeV and the Standard Model gauge singlet scalars are introduced.

The discrete symmetry D_12 at the electroweak scale is used to fix the quark and lepton mixing angles. At the leading order, the Cabbibo angle theta_C is 15^o, and the PMNS matrix is of a bi-dodeca-mixing form giving the Solar-neutrino angle theta_sol=30^o. Thus, there results the relation theta_sol+theta_C ~ 45^o. Out of discrete vacua, a certain vacuum is chosen for this assignment to be consistent with the dodeca-symmetry. A shift of theta_C from 15^o to 13.14^o might arise from a small breaking of the dodeca-symmetry. The spontaneous breaking leading to the required electroweak vacuum is made possible by introducing an additional parity in an effective field approach or by realizing the electroweak dodeca-symmetry explicitly at a high energy scale. At the vacuum we chose Arg.Det.M_q is nonzero, and hence a solution of the strong CP problem invites a very light axion at a high energy scale. We also comment how the next level corrections can fit the mixing angles to the observed values.
