PE-GAN: Prior Embedding GAN for PXD images at Belle II

Abstract: The pixel vertex detector (PXD) is an essential part of the Belle II detector recording particle positions. Data from the PXD and other sensors allow us to reconstruct particle tracks and decay vertices. The effect of background hits on track reconstruction is simulated by adding measured or simulated background hit patterns to the hits produced by simulated signal particles. The effect of background hits on track reconstruction is simulated by adding measured or simulated background hit patterns to the hits produced by simulated signal particles. This model requires a large set of statistically independent PXD background noise samples to avoid a systematic bias of reconstructed tracks. However, data from the fine-grained PXD requires a substantial amount of storage. As an efficient way of producing background noise, we explore the idea of an on-demand PXD background generator using conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) with contrastive learning, adapted by the number of PXD sensors in order to both increase the image fidelity and produce sensor-dependent PXD hitmaps. △ Less

We reconstruct $B^+\to ρ^+(\to π^+π^0(\to γγ))ρ^0(\to π^+π^-)$ decays in a sample of SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions collected by the Belle II experiment in 2019, 2020, and 2021 at the $Υ$(4S) resonance and corresponding to 190 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We fit the distributions of the difference between expected and observed $B$ candidate energy, continuum-suppression discriminant, dipion masses, and decay angles of the selected samples, to determine a signal yield of $345 \pm 31$ events. The signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to ρ^+ρ^0) = [23.2^{+\ 2.2}_{-\ 2.1} (\rm stat) \pm 2.7 (\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $f_L = 0.943 ^{+\ 0.035}_{-\ 0.033} (\rm stat)\pm 0.027(\rm syst)$, and $\mathcal{A}_{CP}=-0.069 \pm 0.068(\rm stat) \pm 0.060 (\rm syst)$. The results agree with previous measurements. This is the first measurement of $\mathcal{A}_{CP}$ in $B^+\to ρ^+ρ^0$ decays reported by Belle II. △ Less

Abstract: We present the novel implementation of a non-differentiable metric approximation and a corresponding loss-scheduling aimed at the search for new particles of unknown mass in high energy physics experiments. We call the loss-scheduling, based on the minimisation of a figure-of-merit related function typical of particle physics, a Punzi-loss function, and the neural network that utilises this loss f… ▽ More We present the novel implementation of a non-differentiable metric approximation and a corresponding loss-scheduling aimed at the search for new particles of unknown mass in high energy physics experiments. We call the loss-scheduling, based on the minimisation of a figure-of-merit related function typical of particle physics, a Punzi-loss function, and the neural network that utilises this loss function a Punzi-net. We show that the Punzi-net outperforms standard multivariate analysis techniques and generalises well to mass hypotheses for which it was not trained. This is achieved by training a single classifier that provides a coherent and optimal classification of all signal hypotheses over the whole search space. Our result constitutes a complementary approach to fully differentiable analyses in particle physics. We implemented this work using PyTorch and provide users full access to a public repository containing all the codes and a training example. △ Less

We use a sample of collisions collected in 2019 and 2020 at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance and corresponding to $62.8$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We use simulation to determine optimized event selections. The $ΔE$ and $M_{\rm bc}$ distributions of the resulting samples are fit to determine signal yields of approximately 690, 840, and 380 decays for the channels $B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+$, $B^+ \to K^+π^-π^+$, and $B^0 \to K^+π^-π^0$, respectively. These yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+) = [35.8 \pm 1.6(\rm stat) \pm 1.4 (\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to K^+π^-π^+) = [67.0 \pm 3.3 (\rm stat)\pm 2.3 (\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to K^+π^-π^0) = [38.1 \pm 3.5 (\rm stat)\pm 3.9 (\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{A}_{\rm CP}(B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+) = -0.103 \pm 0.042(\rm stat) \pm 0.020 (\rm syst)$, $\mathcal{A}_{\rm CP}(B^+ \to K^+π^-π^+) = -0.010 \pm 0.050 (\rm stat)\pm 0.021(\rm syst)$, and $\mathcal{A}_{\rm CP}(B^0 \to K^+π^-π^0) = 0.207 \pm 0.088 (\rm stat)\pm 0.011(\rm syst)$. We reconstruct and select about $50$ $B^0 \to K_S^0 π^0$ candidates, and we measure $\mathcal{A}_{K^0π^0} = -0.40_{-0.44}^{+0.46} (\text{stat}) \pm 0.04 (\text{syst})$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to K^0 π^0) = [8.5_{-1.6}^{+1.7} (\text{stat}) \pm 1.2 (\text{syst})] \times 10^{-6}$. This is the first measurement of $CP$ violation in $B^0 \to K^0π^0$ decays reported by Belle II. Signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries for flavour-specific channels. These are the first measurements in charmless decays reported by Belle~II. Results are compatible with known determinations and show detector performance comparable with the best Belle results offering a reliable basis to assess projections for future reach. △ Less

First measurements of absolute branching fractions of the $Ξ_c^+$ baryon at Belle

Abstract: We present the first measurements of the absolute branching fractions of $Ξ_c^+$ decays into $Ξ^- π^+ π^+$ and $p K^- π^+$ final states. Our analysis is based on a data set of $(772\pm 11)\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. We then measure the product branching fractions ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to \barΛ_c^- Ξ_c^+){\cal B}(Ξ_c^+ \to Ξ^- π^+ π^+)$ and ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to \barΛ_c^- Ξ_c^+){\cal B}(Ξ_c^+ \to p K^- π^+)$. Dividing these product branching fractions by $\bar{B}^{0} \to \barΛ_{c}^{-} Ξ_{c}^{+}$ yields: ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^+ \to Ξ^- π^+ π^+) = [2.86 \pm 1.21(\rm stat.) \pm 0.38(\rm syst.)]\%$ and ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^+ \to p K^- π^+)=[0.45 \pm 0.21(\rm stat.) \pm 0.07(\rm syst.)]\%$. This book is the outcome of a joint effort of Belle II collaborators and theorists through the Belle II theory interface platform (B2TiP), an effort that commenced in 2014. The aim of B2TiP was to elucidate the potential impacts of the Belle II program, which includes a wide scope of physics topics: B physics, charm, tau, quarkonium, electroweak precision measurements and dark sector searches. It is composed of nine working groups (WGs), which are coordinated by teams of theorist and experimentalists conveners: Semileptonic and leptonic B decays, Radiative and Electroweak penguins, phi_1 and phi_2 (time-dependent CP violation) measurements, phi_3 measurements, Charmless hadronic B decay, Charm, Quarkonium(like), tau and low-multiplicity processes, new physics and global fit analyses. This book highlights "golden- and silver-channels", i.e. those that would have the highest potential impact in the field. Theorists scrutinised the role of those measurements and estimated the respective theoretical uncertainties, achievable now as well as prospects for the future. Using a sum-of-exclusive technique with invariant $X_s$ mass up to 2.8~GeV/$c^2$, we obtain $Δ_{0-} = \bigl[-0.48 \pm 1.49 {\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.97 {\rm (syst.)} \pm 1.15 {(f_{+-}/f_{00})}\bigr]$\% and $ΔA_{CP} = \bigl[+3.69 \pm 2.65 {\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.76{\rm (syst.)}\bigr]$\%, where the last uncertainty for $Δ_{0-}$ is due to the uncertainty on the production ratio of $B^+B^-$ to $B^0\bar{B}^0$ in $Υ(4S)$ decays. The measured value of $Δ_{0-}$ is consistent with zero, allowing us to constrain the resolved photon contribution in the $B \to X_s γ$, and improve the branching fraction prediction. The result for $ΔA_{CP}$ is consistent with the prediction of the SM. We also measure the direct $CP$ asymmetries for charged and neutral $B \to X_s γ$ decays. The measured $χ_{b2} \to J/ψ+ anything$ branching fraction is measured to be $(1.50\pm0.34({\rm stat.})\pm0.22({\rm syst.}))\times 10^{-3}$, and 90\% C.L. upper limits for the $χ_{b0,b1} \to J/ψ+ anything$ branching fractions are found to be $2.3\times 10^{-3}$ and $1.1\times 10^{-3}$, respectively. For ${\cal B}(χ_{b1} \to ω+ anything)$, the branching fraction is measured to be $(4.9\pm1.3({\rm stat.})\pm0.6({\rm syst.}))\times 10^{-2}$. %($<3.68\times 10^{-2}$ at 90\% C.L.). First observation of $γγ\to p \bar{p} K^+ K^-$ and search for exotic baryons in $pK$ systems

Abstract: The process $γγ\to p \bar{p} K^+ K^-$ and its intermediate processes are measured for the first time using a 980~fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The production of $p \bar{p} K^+ K^-$ and a $Λ(1520)^0~(\barΛ(1520)^0)$ signal in the $pK^-$~($\bar{p} K^+$) invariant mass spectrum are clearly observed. Abstract: We use 772$\times 10^6$ $B \bar{B}$ meson pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector to measure the branching fraction for $\bar{B} \rightarrow X_s γ$. Evidence of $Υ(1S) \to J/ψ+χ_{c1}$ and search for double-charmonium production in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays

Abstract: Using data samples of $102\times10^6$ $Υ(1S)$ and $158\times10^6$ $Υ(2S)$ events collected with the Belle detector, a first experimental search has been made for double-charmonium production in the exclusive decays $Υ(1S,2S)\rightarrow J/ψ(ψ')+X$, where $X=η_c$, $χ_{cJ} (J=~0,~1,~2)$, $η_c(2S)$, $X(3940)$, and $X(4160)$. The $90\%$ confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions of the other modes having a significance of less than $3σ$ are determined. Significant si… ▽ More Using data samples of 89 fb$^{-1}$, 703 fb$^{-1}$, and 121 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider at center-of-mass energies 10.52 GeV, 10.58 GeV, and 10.876 GeV, respectively, we study the exclusive reactions $e^+e^- \to ωπ^0$, $K^{\ast}(892)\bar{K}$, and $K_2^{\ast}(1430)\bar{K}$ (Charge-conjugate modes are included implicitly). Significant signals of $ωπ^0$, $K^{\ast}(892)^0\bar{K}^0$, and $K_2^{\ast}(1430)^-K^+$ are observed for the first time at these energies, and the energy dependencies of the cross sections are presented. Evidence for the decay B0 --> K+K-pi0

Abstract: The cross section for $e^+ e^- \to π^+ π^- J/ψ$ between 3.8 GeV and 5.5 GeV is measured with a 967 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected by the Belle detector at or near the $Υ(nS)$ ($n = 1,\ 2,\ ...,\ 5$) resonances. The Y(4260) state is observed, and its resonance parameters are determined. In addition, an excess of $π^+ π^- J/ψ$ production around 4 GeV is observed. This feature can be described by a Breit-Wigner parameterization with properties that are consistent with the Y(4008) state that was previously reported by Belle. In a study of $Y(4260) \to π^+ π^- J/ψ$ decays, a structure is observed in the $M(π^\pm\jpsi)$ mass spectrum with $5.2σ$ significance, with mass $M=(3894.5\pm 6.6\pm 4.5) {\rm MeV}/c^2$ and width $Γ=(63\pm 24\pm 26)$ MeV/$c^{2}$, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively.
