We analyze and implement the Local Analytic Sector Subtraction (LASS) scheme for handling infrared singularities in next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculations in perturbative QCD. We examine the key aspects of the scheme including sector function construction, singular limit parametrization, subtraction counterterm derivation, and integration techniques. As a proof-of-concept, we numerically implement LASS for the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow 3$ jets. In this study we examine the limiting behavior of subtraction terms for real-virtual contribution and explicitly demonstrate the pole cancellation of the double-virtual contribution. Differential cross sections are computed for several event shape observables, showing the stability and efficiency of LASS scheme. This work lays the foundation for develo** an automated tool for NNLO QCD calculations using this promising scheme.

We summarize our efforts to create a numerical implementation of the Local Analytical Subtraction Scheme (LASS) for obtaining NNLO QCD predictions in electron-positron collisions. We focus on the regularization of double-real radiation contributions, which are typically the most computationally intensive part of NNLO calculations. We describe the structure of the subtraction terms in LASS and our approach to numerically validate them. Using arbitrary precision arithmetic, we demonstrate the proper convergence of individual subtraction terms, overlap removal terms, and spurious singularity cancellations in various singular limits. We show results for the specific case of three-jet production in $e^+e^-$ collisions. Our results validate the correctness of both the LASS formalism and our numerical implementation, setting the stage for full NNLO calculations using this method.

We study the impact of state-of-the-art top-quark data collected at the Large Hadron Collider on parton distribution functions (PDFs). Following the ABMP methodology, the fit extracts simultaneously proton PDFs, the strong coupling $α_s(M_Z)$ and heavy-quark masses at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy in QCD. It includes recent high-statistics data on absolute total inclusive cross sections for $t\bar{t}+X$, the sum of $(t + X)$ and $(\bar{t} + X)$ hadroproduction, and normalized inclusive data double-differential in the invariant mass and rapidity of the $t\bar{t}$ pair at $\sqrt{S}=13$ TeV. The gluon PDF at large $x$ and the top-quark mass value derived from these data are well compatible with the previous ABMP16 results, but with significantly smaller uncertainties, reduced by up to a factor of two. At NNLO in QCD we obtain for the strong coupling the value $α_s^{(n_f=5)}(M_Z)= 0.1150 \pm 0.0009$ and for the top-quark mass in the ${\overline{\mbox{MS}}}$-scheme $m_t(m_t) = 160.6 \pm 0.6$ GeV, corresponding to $m_t^{\rm pole} = 170.2 \pm 0.7$ GeV in the on-shell scheme. The new fit, dubbed ABMPtt, is publicly released in grids in LHAPDF format.

Total charm-pair cross sections in $pp$ collisions are interesting because they can be calculated to NNLO in QCD without any reference to fragmentation effects. On the other hand, the fiducial differential charm cross sections from which the total cross sections must be extrapolated are currently known to NLO+NLL at most (e.g. FONLL), and must be treated for known effects of nonuniversal charm fragmentation. A new procedure using the FONLL framework as input for an empirical parametrization of the data in both shape and normalization, with all its parameters actually fitted to data, is used to derive so-called data-driven FONLL (ddFONLL) parametrizations which can be used to extrapolate the differential cross sections to total cross sections with minimal bias. This includes an empirical treatment of all known non-universal charm fragmentation effects, in particular for the baryon-to-meson ratio as a function of transverse momentum. The total charm-pair cross sections obtained in this way, which supersede all previous ones obtained using the assumption of charm-fragmentation universality, are consistent with NNLO predictions, and allow first studies of their sensitivity e.g. to the charm-quark mass and/or the NNLO gluon PDF at very low transverse momentum fractions $x$.

We compute differential distributions for Drell-Yan processes at the LHC and the Tevatron colliders at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD, including fiducial cuts on the decay leptons in the final state. The comparison of predictions obtained with four different codes shows excellent agreement, once linear power corrections from the fiducial cuts are included in those codes that rely on phase-space slicing subtraction schemes. For $Z$-boson production we perform a detailed study of the symmetric cuts on the transverse momenta of the decay leptons. Predictions at fixed order in perturbative QCD for those symmetric cuts, typically imposed in experiments, suffer from an instability. We show how this can be remedied by an all-order resummation of the fiducial transverse momentum spectrum, and we comment on the choice of cuts for future experimental analyses.

We present the even-N moments N =< 20 of the fourth-order (N^3LO) contribution P_{gq}^(3)(x) to the quark-to-gluon splitting function in perturbative QCD. These moments, obtained by analytically computing off-shell operator matrix elements for a general gauge group, agree with all known results, in particular with the moments N =< 10 derived before from structure functions in deep-inelastic scattering. Using the new moments and the available endpoint constraints, we construct approximations for P_{gq}^(3)(x) which improve upon those obtained from the lowest five even moments. The remaining uncertainties of this function are now practically irrelevant at momentum fractions x > 0.1. The resulting errors of the convolution of P_{gq} at N^3LO with a typical quark distribution are small at x >~ 10^{-3} and exceed 1% only at x ~< 10^{-4} for a strong coupling alpha_s = 0.2. The present results for P_{gq}^(3)(x) should thus be sufficient for most collider-physics applications.

We present the first results for the next-to-next-to leading order (NNLO) corrections to the semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering process in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. We consider the quark initiated flavor non-singlet process and obtain the complete contributions analytically at leading color. All relevant virtual and real emission Feynman diagrams have been computed using integration-by-parts reduction to master integrals and two approaches for their subsequent evaluation (parametric phase-space integration and method of differential equations). The numerical analysis demonstrates the significance of the NNLO corrections and their great impact on the reduction of the residual scale dependence.

We compare double-differential normalized production cross sections for top-antitop $+ X$ hadroproduction at NNLO QCD accuracy, as obtained through a customized version of the MATRIX framework interfaced to PineAPPL, with recent data by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations. We take into account theory uncertainties due to scale variation and we see how predictions vary as a function of parton distribution function (PDF) choice and top-quark pole mass value, considering different state-of-the-art PDF fits with their uncertainties. Notwithstanding the overall reasonable good agreement, we observe discrepancies at the level of a few $σ$'s between data and theoretical predictions in some kinematical regions, which can be alleviated by refitting the top-quark mass value, and/or the PDFs and/or $α_s(M_Z)$, considering the correlations between these three quantities. In a fit of top-quark mass standalone, we notice that, for all considered PDF + $α_s(M_Z)$ sets used as input, some datasets point towards top-quark pole mass values lower by about $2\,σ$'s than those emerging from fitting other datasets, suggesting a possible tension between experimental measurements using different decay channels, and/or the need of better estimating uncertainties on the latter.

We extract the top-quark mass value in the on-shell renormalization scheme from the comparison of theoretical predictions for $pp \rightarrow t\bar{t} + X$ at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD accuracy with experimental data collected by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations for absolute total, normalized single-differential and double-differential cross-sections during Run 1, Run 2 and the ongoing Run 3 at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). For the theory computations of heavy-quark pair-production we use the MATRIX framework, interfaced to PineAPPL for the generation of grids of theory predictions, which can be efficiently used a-posteriori during the fit, performed within xFitter. We take several state-of-the-art parton distribution functions (PDFs) as input for the fit and evaluate their associated uncertainties, as well as the uncertainties arising from renormalization and factorization scale variation. Fit uncertainties related to the datasets are also part of the extracted uncertainty of the top-quark mass and turn out to be of similar size as the combined scale and PDF uncertainty. Fit results from different PDF sets agree among each other within 1$σ$ uncertainty, whereas some datasets related to $t\bar{t}$ decay in different channels (dileptonic vs. semileptonic) point towards top-quark mass values in slight tension among each other, although still compatible within $2.5 σ$ accuracy. Our results are compatible with the PDG 2022 top-quark pole-mass value. Our work opens the road towards more complex simultaneous NNLO fits of PDFs, the strong coupling $α_s(M_Z)$ and the top-quark mass, using the currently most precise experimental data on $t\bar{t} + X$ total and multi-differential cross-sections from the LHC.

These results, obtained using physical quantities in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, have been and will be used to validate conceptionally much more challenging determinations of these splitting functions from off-shell operator matrix elements (OMEs). For the quark-gluon and gluon-gluon splitting functions, which have yet to be computed to higher N using OMEs, we construct approximations based on our moments and endpoint constraints, where we present new large-x results for the gluon-gluon case. These approximations facilitate an approximate N^3LO evolution of parton distributions which are sufficiently accurate outside the region of small momentum fractions x.

From these results we have determined the all-N form, and hence the exact x-space expression, using systems of Diophantine equations for its coefficients. The dominant and subdominant leading small-x nf^2 contributions to P_{gq}^(3)(x) are of the form 1/x ln x and ln^4 x, respectively; the leading large-x term is ln^4 (1-x). The coefficient of the first of these is new, the other two agree with results obtained before and thus provide checks of our results.

The evolution kernels that govern the scale dependence of the generalized parton distributions are invariant under transformations of the $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathrm R)$ collinear subgroup of the conformal group. Beyond one loop the symmetry generators, due to quantum effects, differ from the canonical ones. We construct the transformation which brings the {\it full} symmetry generators back to their canonical form and show that the eigenvalues (anomalous dimensions) of the new, canonically invariant, evolution kernel coincide with the so-called parity respecting anomalous dimensions. We develop an efficient method that allows one to restore an invariant kernel from the corresponding anomalous dimensions. As an example, the explicit expressions for NNLO invariant kernels for the twist two flavor-nonsinglet operators in QCD and for the planar part of the universal anomalous dimension in $ N=4$ SYM are presented.

We evaluate the impact of recent SeaQuest (E906 experiment) data on dimuon production in proton-deuteron and proton-proton collisions on parton distribution functions (PDFs). We find these data in a good agreement with the QCD predictions based on PDFs fitted to the Tevatron and LHC data on forward production of $W$ and $Z$ bosons. As a basis for this study we use the ABMP16 PDF fits and show that they turn out to be compatible with the SeaQuest data, and that these data have constraining power, allowing to reduce the uncertainties on the isospin asymmetry of the light-sea-quark distribution at large longitudinal momentum fraction $x$. We discuss the nuclear corrections needed to describe the deuteron and show that they affect the theoretical description of the proton-deuteron Drell-Yan cross section at the level of $\mathcal{O}(0.5 - 1)$\%. We also comment on the compatibility of the SeaQuest results with other state-of-the-art PDF fits and show that these data are in clear disagreement with models proposing an SU(3)-flavor symmetric quark sea. Finally, we perform a comparison between the second Mellin moments of the light-quark PDFs and recent results from various lattice QCD computations, which demonstrates good compatibility, albeit limited by the uncertainties inherent in current lattice QCD simulations.

Together with the known results for the non-singlet splitting function $P_{\rm ns}^{\,+}$ at this order, this effectively completes the quark-quark contribution for the evolution of parton distribution at N$^{\:\!3}$LO accuracy. Our new results thus provide a major step towards fully consistent N$^{\:\!3}$LO calculations at the LHC and the reduction of the residual uncertainty in the parton evolution to the percent level.

The computation of the single-differential top quark-antiquark pair ($\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}$) production cross section at NLO in the fixed-order expansion is examined consistently using the MSR and $\overline{\textrm{MS}}$ short-distance top quark mass schemes. A thorough investigation of the dependence of different regions of the $\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}$ invariant mass spectrum on the renormalization scales $R$ and $μ_m$ of the MSR mass $m_\mathrm{t}^{\textrm{MSR}}(R)$ and $\overline{\textrm{MS}}$ mass $\overline{m}_\mathrm{t}(μ_m)$, respectively, is carried out. We demonstrate that a scale choice of $R\sim 80$~GeV is important for the stability of the cross-section predictions for the low $\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}$ invariant mass range, which is important for a reliable extraction of the top quark mass. Furthermore, a choice of semi-dynamical renormalization and factorization scales is preferred. These findings are expected to remain valid once non-relativistic quasi-bound state effects are included in the low invariant mass region.

Single-differential cross section predictions for top quark pair production are presented at next-to-leading order, using running top quark mass renormalization schemes. The evolution of the mass of the top quark is performed in the MSR scheme $m_{\mathrm{t}}^{\textrm{MSR}}(μ)$ for renormalization scales $μ$ below the $\overline{\textrm{MS}}$ top quark mass $\overline{m}_{\mathrm{t}}(\overline{m}_{\mathrm{t}})$, and in the $\overline{\textrm{MS}}$ scheme $\overline{m}_{\mathrm{t}}(μ)$ for scales above. In particular, the implementation of a mass renormalization scale independent of the strong coupling renormalization scale and factorization scale in quantum chromodynamics allows investigating independent dynamical scale variations. Furthermore, the first theoretically consistent extraction of the top quark MSR mass from experimental data is presented.

An overwhelming number of theoretical predictions for hadron colliders require parton distribution functions (PDFs), which are an important ingredient of theory infrastructure for the next generation of high-energy experiments. This whitepaper summarizes the status and future prospects for determination of high-precision PDFs applicable in a wide range of energies and experiments, in particular in precision tests of the Standard Model and in new physics searches at the high-luminosity Large Hadron Collider and Electron-Ion Collider. We discuss the envisioned advancements in experimental measurements, QCD theory, global analysis methodology, and computing that are necessary to bring unpolarized PDFs in the nucleon to the N2LO and N3LO accuracy in the QCD coupling strength. Special attention is given to the new tasks that emerge in the era of the precision PDF analysis, such as those focusing on the robust control of systematic factors both in experimental measurements and theoretical computations. Various synergies between experimental and theoretical studies of the hadron structure are explored, including opportunities for studying PDFs for nuclear and meson targets, PDFs with electroweak contributions or dependence on the transverse momentum, for incisive comparisons between phenomenological models for the PDFs and computations on discrete lattice, and for cross-fertilization with machine learning/AI approaches. We present a comprehensive study of high-energy double logarithms in inclusive DIS. They appear parametrically as alpha_s^n ln^{2n-k} x at the n-th order in perturbation theory in the splitting functions for the parton evolution and the coefficient functions for the hard scattering process, and represent the leading corrections at small $x$ in the flavour non-singlet case. We perform their resummation, in terms of modified Bessel functions, to all orders in full QCD up to NNLL accuracy, and partly to N^3LL and beyond in the large-n_c limit, and provide fixed-order expansions up to five loops. In the flavour-singlet sector, where these double logarithms are sub-dominant at small x compared to single-logarithmic alpha_s^n x^{-1} ln^{n-k} x BFKL contributions, we construct fixed-order expansions up to five loops at NNLL accuracy in full QCD. The results elucidate the analytic small-x structure underlying inclusive DIS results in fixed-order perturbation theory and provide important information for present and future numerical and analytic calculations of these quantities.

For the ${\cal R}$ distribution, which depends on the invariant mass of the $t\bar{t}j$-system, we present reference predictions in the on-shell, $\overline{\mbox{MS}}$ and MSR top-quark mass renormalization schemes, applying the latter scheme to this process for the first time. The precise measurement of the top quark mass, which is a fundamental SM parameter, constitutes one of the main goals of the LHC top physics program. One approach to measure this quantity uses the $ρ_\mathrm{s}$ distribution, an observable depending on the invariant mass of the $t\bar{t}j$ system. To fully exploit the experimental accuracy achievable in measuring top quark production cross sections at the LHC, the theory uncertainties associated to these measurements need to be well under control. To this end we present a study of the effect of varying the theoretical input parameters in the calculation of differential cross sections of the $t\bar{t}j$ process. Thereby we studied the influence of the jet reconstruction procedure, as well as the effect of various renormalization and factorization scale definitions and different PDF sets. The variation of the $R$ parameter in the jet reconstruction algorithm was found to have negligible influence on the scale variation uncertainty. A strong reduction of scale uncertainties and a better behaviour of the NLO/LO ratios using selected dynamical scales instead of a static one in the high energy tails of differential distributions was observed. This is particularly interesting in the context of the top quark mass measurements through the $ρ_\mathrm{s}$ distribution, in which the perturbative stability can be improved by applying the proposed dynamical scale definition.

The perturbative expansion of these moments, and hence of the splitting functions for momentum fractions x >~ 0.1, is found to be well behaved with relative alpha_s-coefficients of order one and sub-percent effects on the scale derivatives of the quark and gluon distributions at alpha_s ~< 0.2. We calculate non-singlet quark operator matrix elements of deep-inelastic scattering in the chiral limit including operators with total derivatives. This extends previous calculations with zero-momentum transfer through the operator vertex which provides the well-known anomalous dimensions for the evolution of parton distributions, as well as calculations in off-forward kinematics utilizing conformal symmetry. Non-vanishing momentum-flow through the operator vertex leads to mixing with total derivative operators under renormalization. In the limit of a large number of quark flavors $n_f$ and for low moments in full QCD, we determine the anomalous dimension matrix to fifth order in the perturbative expansion in the strong coupling $α_s$ in the $\overline{\mbox{MS}}$-scheme. We exploit consistency relations for the anomalous dimension matrix which follow from the renormalization structure of the operators, combined with a direct calculation of the relevant diagrams up to fourth order.

Using the approach based on conformal symmetry we calculate the two-loop coefficient function for the axial-vector contributions to two-photon processes in the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme. This is the last missing element for the complete next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculation of the the pion transition form factor $γ^\astγ\to π$ in perturbative QCD. The corresponding high-statistics measurement is planned by the Belle II collaboration and will allow one to put strong constraints on the pion light-cone distribution amplitude. The calculated NNLO corrections prove to be rather large and have to be taken into account. The same coefficient function determines the contribution of the axial-vector generalized parton distributions to deeply-virtual Compton scattering which is investigated at the JLAB 12 GeV accelerator, by COMPASS at CERN, and in the future will be studied at the Electron Ion Collider EIC.

We present a detailed comparison of the fixed-order predictions computed by four publicly available computer codes for Drell-Yan processes at the LHC and Tevatron colliders. We point out that while there is agreement among the predictions at the next-to-leading order accuracy, the predictions at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) differ, whose extent depends on the observable. The sizes of the differences in general are at least similar, sometimes larger than the sizes of the NNLO corrections themselves. We demonstrate that the neglected power corrections by the codes that use global slicing methods for the regularization of double real emissions can be the source of the differences. Depending on the fiducial cuts, those power corrections become linear, hence enhanced as compared to quadratic ones that are considered standard.

Jets constructed via clustering algorithms (e.g., anti-$k_T$, soft-drop) have been proposed for many precision measurements, such as the strong coupling $α_s$ and the nucleon intrinsic dynamics. However, the theoretical accuracy is affected by missing QCD corrections at higher orders for the jet functions in the associated factorization theorems. Their calculation is complicated by the jet clustering procedure. In this work, we propose a method to evaluate jet functions at higher orders in QCD. The calculation involves the phase space sector decomposition with suitable soft subtractions. As a concrete example, we present the quark-jet function using the anti-$k_T$ algorithm with E-scheme recombination at next-to-next-to-leading order.

Evolution equations for leading twist operators in high orders of perturbation theory can be restored from the spectrum of anomalous dimensions and the calculation of the special conformal anomaly at one order less using conformal symmetry of QCD at the Wilson-Fisher critical point at non-integer $d=4-2ε$ space-time dimensions. In this work we generalize this technique to axial-vector operators. We calculate the corresponding three-loop evolution kernels in Larin's scheme and derive explicit expressions for the finite renormalization kernel that describes the difference to the vector case to restore the conventional ${\overline{\mathrm{MS}}}$-scheme. The results are directly applicable to deeply-virtual Compton scattering and the transition form factor $γ^*γ\toπ$.

The relationship between Feynman diagrams and hypergeometric functions is discussed. Special attention is devoted to existing techniques for the construction of the $ε$-expansion. As an example, we present a detailed discussion of the construction of the epsilon-expansion of the Appell function $F_3$ around rational values of parameters via an iterative solution of differential equations. As a by-product, we have found that the one-loop massless pentagon diagram in dimension $d=3-2ε$ is not expressible in terms of multiple polylogarithms. Another interesting example is the Puiseux-type solution involving a differential operator generated by a hypergeometric function of three variables. The holonomic properties of the $F_N$ hypergeometric functions are briefly discussed.

We present predictions for heavy-quark production at the Large Hadron Collider making use of the ${\overline{\rm MS}}$ and MSR renormalization schemes for the heavy-quark mass as alternatives to the widely used on-shell renormalization scheme. We compute single and double differential distributions including QCD corrections at next-to-leading order and investigate the renormalization and factorization scale dependence as well as the perturbative convergence in these mass renormalization schemes. The implementation is based on publicly available programs, ${\texttt{MCFM}}$ and ${\texttt{xFitter}}$, extending their capabilities. Our results are applied to extract the top-quark mass using measurements of the total and differential $t\bar{t}$ production cross-sections and to investigate constraints on parton distribution functions, especially on the gluon distribution at low $x$ values, from available LHC data on heavy-flavor hadro-production.

The Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High Luminosity--Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron-proton and proton-proton operation. This report represents an update of the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) of the LHeC, published in 2012. It comprises new results on parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics in extending the accessible kinematic range in lepton-nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to enhanced luminosity, large energy and the cleanliness of the hadronic final states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, the report represents a detailed updated design of the energy recovery electron linac (ERL) including new lattice, magnet, superconducting radio frequency technology and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described and the lower energy, high current, 3-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution and calibration goals which arise from the Higgs and parton density function physics programmes. The paper also presents novel results on the Future Circular Collider in electron-hadron mode, FCC-eh, which utilises the same ERL technology to further extend the reach of DIS to even higher centre-of-mass energies.

Using the approach based on conformal symmetry we calculate the two-loop coefficient function for the vector flavor-nonsinglet contribution to deeply-virtual Compton scattering (DVCS). The analytic expression for the coefficient function in momentum fraction space is presented in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme. The corresponding next-to-next-to-leading order correction to the Compton form factor $\mathcal{H}$ for a simple model of the generalized parton distribution appears to be rather large: a factor two smaller than the next-to-leading order correction, approximately $\sim 10$\% of the tree level result in the bulk of the kinematic range, for $Q^2=4$ GeV$^2$.

We consider a detailed account on the construction of the heavy-quark parton distribution functions for charm and bottom, starting from $n_f=3$ light flavors in the fixed-flavor number (FFN) scheme and by using the standard decoupling relations for heavy quarks in QCD. We also account for two-mass effects. Furthermore, different implementations of the variable-flavor-number (VFN) scheme in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) are studied, with the particular focus on the resummation of large logarithms in $Q^2/m_h^2$, the ratio the virtuality of the exchanged gauge-boson $Q^2$ to the heavy-quark mass squared $m_h^2$. A little impact of resummation effects if found in the kinematic range of the existing data on the DIS charm-quark production so that they can be described very well within the FFN scheme. Finally, we study the theoretical uncertainties associated to the VFN scheme, which manifest predominantly at small $Q^2$.
