We investigate the medium modifications of the masses of pseudoscalar open charm ($D$ and $\bar D$) mesons and the charmonium state ($ψ(3770)$) in hot isospin asymmetric strange hadronic medium in the presence of an external magnetic field within a chiral effective model. The in-medium partial decay widths of $ψ(3770)$ to $D\bar D$ mesons are computed from the in-medium masses of the initial and final state mesons. These are computed using two light quark pair creation models - (I) the $^3P_0$ model and (II) a field theoretical (FT) model of composite hadrons with quark (and antiquark) constituents. The production cross-sections of $ψ(3770)$, arising from scattering of the $D$ and $\bar D$ mesons, are computed from the relativistic Breit-Wigner spectral function expressed in terms of the in-medium masses and the decay widths of the charmonium state. The effects of the magnetic field are considered due to the Dirac sea (DS) of the baryons, the mixing of the pseudoscalar and vector meson (PV mixing) and the Landau level contributions for the charged hadrons. The production cross-sections of $ψ(3770)$ arising due to scattering of $D^+D^-(D^0\bar{D}^0)$ mesons in the hot magnetized strange hadronic matter are observed to have distinct peak positions, when the magnetic field is large, due to the mass difference of the transverse and longitudinal components of $ψ(3770)$, arising from PV mixing. These can have observable consequences on the dilepton spectra and the production of the charm mesons in ultra-relativistic peripheral heavy ion collision experiments, where the produced magnetic field is huge.

Within a chiral effective model, the masses of the vector and pseudoscalar charmonium (bottomonium) states are calculated from the medium modification of a dilaton field, $χ$, which mimics the gluon condensates of QCD. In the presence of a magnetic field, there is mixing of the pseudoscalar (P) meson and the longitudinal component of the vector (V) meson (PV mixing), which leads to appreciable modifications of their masses. The radiative decay widths of the vector (V) heavy quarkonia to the pseudoscalar (P) mesons ($J/ψ\rightarrow η_c(1S) γ$, $ψ(2S)\rightarrow η_c(2S) γ$ and $ψ(1D)\rightarrow η_c(2S) γ$ for the charm sector and $Υ(NS)\rightarrow η_b(NS)γ$, $N$=1,2,3,4, for the bottom sector) in the magnetized asymmetric nuclear matter are also investigated in the present work. The difference in the mass of the transverse component from the longitudinal component of the vector meson, arising due to PV mixing, is observed as a double peak structure in the invariant mass spectrum of the production cross-section of $ψ(3770)$. The modifications of the production cross-sections as well as the radiative decay widths of the heavy quarkonia in the magnetized matter should have observable consequences on the production of these heavy flavour mesons resulting from ultra-relativistic peripheral heavy ion collision experiments, where the created magnetic field can be extremely large.

We study the partial decay widths of charmonium (bottomonium) states to ${\rm D\bar D \; (B\bar B)}$ mesons in magnetized (nuclear) matter using a field theoretical model of composite hadrons with quark (and antiquark) constituents. These are computed from the mass modifications of the decaying and produced mesons within a chiral effective model, including the nucleon Dirac sea effects. The mass modifications of the open charm (bottom) mesons are calculated from their interactions with the nucleons and the scalar mesons, whereas the mass shift of the heavy quarkonium state is obtained from the medium change of a scalar dilaton field, $χ$, which mimics the gluon condensates of QCD. The Dirac sea contributions are observed to lead to a rise (drop) in the quark condensates as the magnetic field is increased, an effect called the (inverse) magnetic catalysis. These effects are observed to be significant and the anomalous magnetic moments (AMMs) of the nucleons are observed to play an important role. For $ρ_B$=0, there is observed to be magnetic catalysis (MC) without and with AMMs, whereas, for $ρ_B=ρ_0$, the inverse magnetic catalysis (IMC) is observed when the AMMs are taken into account, contrary to MC, when the AMMs are ignored. In the presence of a magnetic field, there are also mixings of spin 0 (pseudoscalar) and spin 1 (vector) states (PV mixing) which modify the masses of these mesons. The magnetic field effects on the heavy quarkonium decay widths should have observable consequences on the production the heavy flavour mesons, which are created in the early stage of ultra-relativistic peripheral heavy ion collisions, at RHIC and LHC, when the produced magnetic fields can still be extremely large.

These are obtained from the in-medium masses of the open strange mesons and the decay widths $φ\rightarrow K\bar K$, $K^* \rightarrow Kπ$ and $\bar {K^*} \rightarrow {\bar K}π$ in the hadronic medium. The decay widths are computed using a field theoretic model of composite hadrons with quark/antiquark constituents, from the matrix element of the light quark-antiquark pair creation term of the free Dirac Hamiltonian between the initial and final states. The matrix element is multiplied with a coupling strength parameter for the light quark-antiquark pair creation, which is fitted to the observed vacuum decay width of the decay process. There are observed to be substantial modifications of the spectral functions as well as production cross-sections of these vector mesons due to isospin asymmetry as well as strangeness of the hadronic medum at high densities. These studies should have observable consequences, e.g. in the yield of the hidden and open strange mesons arising from the isospin asymmetric high energy heavy ion collisions at the Compressed baryonic matter (CBM) experiments at the future facility at GSI.

These are studied accounting for the mixing of the pseudoscalar ($P$) and vector ($V$) mesons ($D-D^*$, $η_c'-Ψ(3770)$ mixings), with the mixing parameter, $g_{PV}$ of a phenomenological three-point ($PVγ$) vertex interaction determined from the observed radiative decay width of $V\rightarrow Pγ$. For charged $D-D^*$ mixing, this parameter is dependent on the magnetic field, because of the Landau level contributions to the vacuum masses of these mesons. The masses of the charged $D$ and $D^*$ mesons modified due to $PV$ mixing, in addition, have contributions from the lowest Landau levels in the presence of a strong magnetic field. The effects of the magnetic field on the decay widths are studied using a field theoretic model of composite hadrons with quark (and antiquark) consittuents. The parameter for the charged $D-D^*$ mixing is observed to increase appreciably with increase in the magnetic field. This leads to dominant modifications to their masses, and hence the decay widths of charged $D^*\rightarrow Dπ$ as well as $Ψ(3770)\rightarrow D^+D^-$ at large values of the magnetic field. The masses and decay widths of charmonium states are studied in the presence of strong magnetic fields. The mixing between the pseudoscalar and vector charmonium states at rest is observed to lead to appreciable negative (positive) shifts in the masses of the pseudoscalar (longitudinal component of the vector) charmonium states in vacuum/hadronic medium in the presence of high magnetic fields. The pseudoscalar and vector charmonium masses in the hadronic medium, calculated in an effective chiral model from the medium changes of a scalar dilaton field, have additional significant modifications due to the mixing effects. The masses of the $D$ and $\bar D$ mesons in the magnetized hadronic matter are calculated within the chiral effective model. The partial decay widths of the vector charmonium state to $D\bar D$ are computed using a field theoretical model for composite hadrons with quark/antiquark constituents, and are compared to the decay widths calculated using an effective hadronic Lagrangian. The effects of the mixing are observed to lead to significant contributions to the masses of the pseusoscalar and vector charmonium states, and an appreciable increase in the decay width $ψ(3770) \rightarrow D\bar D$ at large values of the magnetic fields. These studies of the charmonium states in strong magnetic fields should have observable consequences on the dilepton spectra, as well as on the production of the open charm mesons and the charmonium states in ultra relativistic heavy ion collision experiments.

The in-medium partial decay widths of $Υ(4S) \rightarrow B\bar B$ in magnetized asymmetric nuclear matter are studied using a field theoretic model for composite hadrons with quark (and antiquark) constituents. The medium modifications of the decay widths of $Υ(4S)$ to $B\bar B$ pair in magnetized matter arise due to the mass modifications of the decaying $Υ(4S)$ as well as of the produced $B$ and $\bar B$ mesons. The in-medium masses of the open bottom meson in magnetized nuclear matter are computed from their interactions with the nucleons and the scalar mesons within a chiral effective model. The mass modification of the $Υ(4S)$ arises due to the medium modification of a scalar dilaton field, which is introduced in the model to simulate the gluon condensates of QCD. The charged $B^{\pm}$ mesons have additional contributions from the Landau energy levels, leading to positive shifts in their masses in the presence of a magnetic field. In the presence of an external magnetic field, there are contributions to the masses of the $B$, $\bar B$ mesons and $Υ(4S)$ state (longitudinal component) due to the pseudoscalar meson-vector meson (PV) mixing ($B-B^*$, $\bar B- \bar {B^*}$ and $Υ(4S)-η_b(4S)$ mixings), which are also considered in the present study. The PV mixing effects are observed to be the dominant contributions to the mass shifts of these mesons, which lead to appreciable modifications in the decay widths of $Υ(4S)$ to the neutral ($B^0 \bar {B^0}$) and the charged ($B^+ B^-$) pairs in the presence of a magnetic field. The decay widths of the charmonium states to $D\bar D$ in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter in the presence of a magnetic field are studied, using a field theoretical model for composite hadrons with quark/antiquark constituents. The medium modifications of these partial decay widths arise due to the changes in the masses of the decaying charmonium state and the produced $D$ and $\bar D$ mesons in the magnetized hadronic matter, calculated within a chiral effective model. The decay widths are computed using the light quark--antiquark pair creation term of the free Dirac Hamiltonian in terms of the constituent quark field operators. The results of the present investigation are compared with the in-medium decay widths obtained within the $^3P_0$ model. Within the $^3P_0$ model, the charmonium decay widths are calculated using the creation of a light quark--antiquark pair in the $^3P_0$ state. In the presence of a magnetic field, the Landau level contributions give rise to positive shifts in the masses of the charged $D$ and $\bar D$ mesons. This leads to the decay of charmonium to the charged $D^+ D^-$ to be suppressed as compared to the neutral $D\bar D$ pair in symmetric nuclear matter, whereas in asymmetric nuclear matter, the larger mass drop of the $D^+D^-$ pair, as compared to the $D^0 \bar {D^0}$ pair leads to the production of charged open charm meson pairs to be enhanced as compared to the charmonium decay channel to $D^0 {\bar {D^0}}$.

These decay widths are calculated by using the explicit constructions for the bottomonium states and the open bottom mesons ($B$ and $\bar B$), and, the quark antiquark pair creation term of the free Dirac Hamiltonian written in terms of the constituent quark field operators. These decay widths in the hadronic medium are calculated as arising from the mass modifications of the bottomonium states and the $B$ and $\bar B$ mesons, obtained in a chiral effective model. The decay amplitude in the present model is multiplied with a strength parameter for the light quark pair creation, which is fitted from the observed vacuum partial decay width of the bottomonium state, $Υ(4S)$ to $B\bar B$. The effects of the isospin asymmetry, the strangeness fraction of the hadronic matter on the decay widths, arising due to the mass modifications due to these effects, have also been studied. There is observed to be appreciable effects from density, and the effects from isospin asymmetry on the parital decay widths of $Υ\rightarrow B\bar B$ are observed to be quite pronounced at high densities. These effects should show up in the asymmetric heavy ion collisions in Compressed baryonic matter (CBM) experiments planned at the future facility at FAIR. The study of the $Υ$ states will, however, require access to energies higher than the energy regime planned at the CBM experiment. The density effects on the decay widths of the bottomonium states should show up in the production of these states, as well as, in dilepton spectra at the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) energies.

The decay width of $D^* \rightarrow D π$ in the hadronic matter has also been calculated within the composite quark model in the present work, accounting for the medium modifications of the $D$ and $D^*$ masses. We relate here the vacuum structure of chiral symmetry breaking to a wide class of low energy hadronic properties to examine consistency with experimental results. Phase transition of chiral symmetry breaking is described through explicit vacuum realignment. We find that for the present ansatz, vacuum structure of the light quark sector can be determined from $f_π=92$ MeV, which then yields that $Γ(π^0\rightarrow 2 γ)=8.3$ eV and, $R_{ch}=0.67$ fms, in agreement with experiments. This amounts to three independent `observations' of the vacuum structure of the light quark sector. For the calculation of $Γ(π^0\rightarrow 2γ)$, we do not use the anomaly equation - local gauge invariance for vacuum realignment becomes adequate. The above width is sensitive to the vacuum structure, and can give evidence regarding progress towards chiral symmetry restoration in QGP. The corresponding results for $s$ quark sector are moderately good. We also exploit similar ideas for heavy quarks, but here the experimental data are rare, and the theoretical techniques are likely to need refinements.

Potential is replaced by offshell bosonic quanta inside the bound state of nonrelativistic particles. The bosonic dressing is determined through energy minimisation, and mass renormalisation is carried out in a nonperturbative manner. Since the interaction is through a scalar field, it does not include spin effects. The model however nicely incorporates an intuitive picture of hadronic bound states in which the gluon fields dress the quarks providing the binding between them and also simulate the gluonic content of hadrons in deep inelastic collisions.

The scale parameter for the gluon condensates is related to the SVZ parameter in the context of QCD sum rules at zero temperature. With inclusion of quarks in the thermal vacuum the critical temperature at which the gluon condensate vanishes decreases as compared to that containing only gluons. Through coherent states of gluons simulating a mean field type of approximation, we show that the off-shell gluon condensates of vacuum generate a mass-like contribution for the quarks, giving rise to chiral symmetry breaking. We next note that spontaneous breaking of global chiral symmetry links the four component quark field operator to the pion wave function. This in turn yields many hadronic properties in the light quark sector in agreement with experiments, leading to the conclusion that low energy hadron properties are primarily driven by the vacuum structure of quantum chromodynamics.

Phase Transitions in Quantum Field Theory
Authors:
S. P. Misra
Abstract:
We discuss here phase transitions in quantum field theory in the context of vacuum realignment through an explicit construction. Vacuum destabilisation may occur through a scalar attaining a nonzero expectation value, or through a condensate mechanism as in superconductivity and for chiral symmetry breaking, or by some other mechanism not taken here. Phase transition is defined as vacuum realign…

Phase transition is defined as vacuum realignment with a discontinuity in some observables which correspond to the classical order parameters. The method is nonperturbative and variational, using equal time algebra and an ansatz for the construction of the physical vacuum.

We develop here a nonperturbative framework to study quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at finite temperatures using the thermofield dynamics (TFD) method of Umezawa. The methodology considered here is self-consistent and variational. There is a dynamical generation of a magnetic gluon mass. This eliminates the infrared problems associated with perturbative QCD calculations at finite temperatures. We obtain here the thermodynamical quantities like free energy density, pressure and entropy density. We also calculate the temperature dependence of SVZ parameter ${α_{s} \over π}<{G^a}_{μν} {G^{a μν}}>$. The condensate vanishes at the critical temperature in accordance with recent hot sum rule calculations. The present method gives an insight to the vacuum structure in QCD at zero temperature as well as at finite temperatures in a co-ordinated manner. (to appear in Z. Physik C )

Abstract:
We consider chiral symmetry breaking through nontrivial vacuum structure with an explicit construct for the vacuum with quark antiquark condensates in QCD with Coulomb gauge for different phenomenological potentials. The dimensional parameter for the condensate function gets related to $<{\bar ψ}ψ>$ of Shifman, Vainshtein and Zakharov. We then relate the condensate function to the wave function…

We then relate the condensate function to the wave function of pion as a Goldstone mode. This simultaneously yields the pion also as a quark antiquark bound state as a localised zero mode of vacuum. We then calculate different pionic properties using the wave function as obtained from the vacuum structure. (to appear in Z. Phys. C)
