Flavour puzzle or Why neutrinos are different?
Abstract: We present a short review of a 6-dimensional model where a flavour puzzle of the Standard Model fermions finds an elegant solution. The mechanism is based on an idea that the three fermionic generations originate from a single 6D family. The model explains in a natural way both charged fermions mass hierarchy and small mixings in the quark sector, and tiny neutrino masses and large neutrino mixing… ▽ More

Neutrino masses and the Cabibbo expansion
Abstract: We adopt a bottom-up approach to reconstruct the possible neutrino mass matrix patterns, in the hypothesis that $λ= \sin θ_C$, where $θ_C$ is the Cabibbo angle, is a useful expansion parameter in the neutrino sector as it is in the quark sector. A numerical analysis of these Cabibbo structures shows that an inverted hierarchy spectrum is statistically favored by the neutrino oscillation data. We t… ▽ More

See-saw neutrino masses and large mixing angles in the vortex background on a sphere
Abstract: In the vortex background on a sphere, a single 6-dimensional fermion family gives rise to 3 zero-modes in the 4-dimensional point of view, which may explain the replication of families in the Standard Model. Previously, it had been shown that realistic hierarchical mass and mixing patterns can be reproduced for the quarks and the charged leptons. Here, we show that the addition of a single heavy 6… ▽ More

A light scalar WIMP through the Higgs portal and CoGeNT
Abstract: If dark matter (DM) simply consists in a scalar particle interacting dominantly with the Higgs boson, the ratio of its annihilation cross section ---which is relevant both for the relic abundance and indirect detection--- and its spin-independent scattering cross section on nuclei depends only on the DM mass. It is an intriguing result that, fixing the mass and direct detection rate to fit the ann… ▽ More

Is the Dark Disc contribution to Dark Matter Signals important ?
Abstract: Recent N-body simulations indicate that a thick disc of dark matter, co-rotating with the stellar disc, forms in a galactic halo after a merger at a redshift $z<2$. The existence of such a dark disc component in the Milky Way could affect dramatically dark matter signals in direct and indirect detection. In this letter, we discuss the possible signal enhancement in connection with the characterist… ▽ More

The Inert Doublet Model and Inelastic Dark Matter
Abstract: The annual modulation observed by DAMA/NaI and DAMA/Libra may be interpreted in terms of elastic or inelastic scattering of dark matter particles. In this paper we confront these two scenarios within the framework of a very simple extension of the Standard Model, the Inert Doublet Model (IDM). In this model the dark matter candidate is a scalar, the lightest component of an extra Higgs doublet.… ▽ More

Heavy Scalar Dark Matter
Abstract: Scalar fields with $SU(2)_L$ quantum numbers provide several viable Dark Matter candidates around the TeV scale. Thanks to scalar quartic interactions, the observed relic density can be obtained for a large range of masses, which we determine. In turn, the constraints on the scalar couplings lead to testable predictions in future direct and indirect searches.

Scalar Multiplet Dark Matter
Abstract: We perform a systematic study of the phenomenology associated to models where the dark matter consists in the neutral component of a scalar SU(2)_L n-uplet, up to n=7. If one includes only the pure gauge induced annihilation cross-sections it is known that such particles provide good dark matter candidates, leading to the observed dark matter relic abundance for a particular value of their mass… ▽ More

Antimatter cosmic rays from dark matter annihilation: First results from an N-body experiment
Abstract: [Abridged]. We take advantage of the galaxy-like 3D dark matter map extracted from the HORIZON Project results to calculate the positron and antiproton fluxes from dark matter annihilation, in a model-independent approach as well as for dark matter particle benchmarks relevant at the LHC scale (from supersymmetric and extra-dimensional theories). MeV Right-handed Neutrinos and Dark Matter
Abstract: We consider the possibility of having a MeV right-handed neutrino as a dark matter constituent. The initial reason for this study was the 511 keV spectral line observed by the satellite experiment INTEGRAL: could it be due to an interaction between dark matter and baryons? Independently of this, we find a number of constraints on the assumed right-handed interactions. They arise in particular fr… ▽ More

Diurnal and Annual Modulation of Cold Dark Matter Signals
Abstract: We calculate the diurnal and annual modulation of the signals in axion and WIMP dark matter detectors on Earth caused by a cold flow of dark matter in the Solar neighborhood. The effects of the Sun's and the Earth's gravity, and of the orbital and rotational motions of the Earth are included. A cold flow on Earth produces a peak in the spectrum of microwave photons in cavity detectors of dark ma… ▽ More

Correlated Hierarchy, Dirac Masses and Large Mixing Angles
Abstract: We introduce a new parametrization of the MNS lepton mixing matrix which separates the hierarchical Grand Unified relations among quarks and leptons. We argue that one large angle stems from the charged leptons, the other from the seesaw structure of the neutral lepton mass matrix. We show how two large mixing angles can arise naturally provided there are special requirements on the Dirac (… ▽ More

Neutrino Mixings and Unified Theories
Abstract: The recent neutrino data converge towards a 3$ν$ scheme with two large and one small mixing angles. Their implications for model-building are discussed. Some possible components of a flavor symmetry over quarks and leptons are singled out. We suggest that they can be naturally embedded in a unified structure with a replicated gauge group.

Family Hierarchy and Large Neutrino Mixings
Abstract: The recent neutrino data seem to favor two large and one small mixing angles and a hierarchy of their squared mass differences. We discuss these within the context of hierarchical neutrino masses. We show that this scheme suggests a specific neutrino mass matrix with mild fine-tuning. We then present a Froggatt-Nielsen model that reproduces this matrix.

A minimal model with large extra dimensions to fit the neutrino data
Abstract: The existence of large extra dimensions enables to explain very simply the various neutrino suppression data. The flavour neutrinos, confined on the brane, are coupled to a "bulk" neutrino state, which is seen as an infinite tower of Kaluza-Klein states from the 4-dimensional point of view. The oscillation of flavour neutrinos into these states can lead to a global and sizable energy-independent… ▽ More

Large N_c, chiral approach to M_eta' at finite temperature
Abstract: We study the temperature dependence of the eta and eta' meson masses within the framework of U(3)_L x U(3)_R chiral perturbation theory, up to next-to-leading order in a simultaneous expansion in momenta, quark masses and number of colours. We find that both masses decrease at low temperatures, but only very slightly. We analyze higher order corrections and argue that large N_c suggests a discon… ▽ More

Leptogenesis with virtual Majorana neutrinos
Abstract: We present a mechanism of leptogenesis based on the out-of-equilibrium decay of a scalar particle into heavy virtual Majorana neutrinos. This scheme presents many conceptual advantages over the conventional scenario of Fukugita and Yanagida. In particular, the standard techniques of quantum field theory can be used to compute the lepton asymmetry, without resorting to the phenomenological approx… ▽ More
