The Parton Branching (PB) method describes the evolution of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions, covering all kinematic regions from small to large transverse momenta kT. The small kT-region is very sensitive both to the contribution of the intrinsic motion of partons (intrinsic kT) and to the resummation of soft gluons taken into account by the PB TMD evolution equations. We study the role of soft-gluon emissions in TMD as well as integrated parton distributions. We perform a detailed investigation of the PB TMD methodology at next-to-leading order (NLO) in Drell-Yan (DY) production for low transverse momenta. We present the extraction of the nonperturbative "intrinsic-kT" distribution from recent measurements of DY transverse momentum distributions at the LHC across a wide range in DY masses, including a detailed treatment of statistical, correlated and uncorrelated uncertainties. We comment on the (in)dependence of intrinsic transverse momentum on DY mass and center-of-mass energy, and on the comparison with other approaches.

Besides recovering earlier results on the $A_{\rm{FB}}$ sensitivity to parton distribution functions, we analyze the precision determination of $Z$-boson couplings to left-handed and right-handed $u$-quarks and $d$-quarks, and explore Beyond-Standard-Model contributions using the SMEFT framework. Using the 4-Dimensional Composite Higgs Model (4DCHM) realization of the minimal composite Higgs scenario, we discuss the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) sensitivity to new physics signals from multiple $Z^\prime$ and $W^\prime$ broad resonances. We illustrate the role of systematic uncertainties due to QCD effects encoded in parton distribution functions for experimental searches in leptonic channels. We show that, by reducing this systematics through the combination of high-precision measurements of Standard Model (SM) lepton-charge and forward-backward asymmetries near the SM vector-boson peak, the sensitivity to the new physics signals can be greatly enhanced.

Azimuthal correlations in Z+jet production at large transverse momenta are computed by matching Parton - Branching (PB) TMD parton distributions and showers with NLO calculations via MCatNLO. The predictions are compared with those for dijet production in the same kinematic range. The azimuthal correlations $Δφ$ between the Z boson and the leading jet are steeper compared to those in dijet production at transverse momenta ${\cal O}(100)$ GeV, while they become similar for very high transverse momenta ${\cal O}(1000)$ GeV. The different patterns of Z+jet and dijet azimuthal correlations can be used to search for potential {\it factorization - breaking} effects in the back-to-back region, which depend on the different color and spin structure of the final states and their interferences with the initial states. In order to investigate these effects experimentally, we propose to measure the ratio of the distributions in $Δφ$ for Z+jet - and multijet production at low and at high transverse momenta, and compare the results to predictions obtained assuming factorization. We examine the role of theoretical uncertainties by performing variations of the factorization scale, renormalization scale and matching scale. In particular, we present a comparative study of matching scale uncertainties in the cases of PB-TMD and collinear parton showers.

We study the influence of the collinear PDF value and uncertainties on the determination of unpolarized TMD distributions and the description of Drell-Yan (DY) and Z-boson production measurements at low transverse momenta. We take into account, for the first time, flavor-dependent non-perturbative TMD profiles. We carry out a Bayesian analysis to incorporate the propagation of PDF uncertainties into TMD extractions. The azimuthal correlation, $Δφ_{12}$, of high transverse momentum jets in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV is studied by applying PB-TMD distributions to NLO calculations via MCatNLO together with the PB-TMD parton shower. A very good description of the cross section as a function of $Δφ_{12}$ is observed. In the back-to-back region of $Δφ_{12} \to π$, a very good agreement is observed with the PB-TMD Set 2 distributions while significant deviations are obtained with the PB-TMD Set 1 distributions. Set 1 uses the evolution scale while Set 2 uses transverse momentum as an argument in $α_s$, and the above observation therefore confirms the importance of an appropriate soft-gluon coupling in angular ordered parton evolution. The total uncertainties of the predictions are dominated by the scale uncertainties of the matrix element, while the uncertainties coming from the PB-TMDs and the corresponding PB-TMD shower are very small. The $Δφ_{12}$ measurements are also compared with predictions using MCatNLO together PYTHIA8, illustrating the importance of details of the parton shower evolution.

In scenarios beyond the Standard Model (BSM) characterized by charged ($W^\prime$) or neutral ($Z^\prime$) massive gauge bosons with large width, resonant mass searches are not very effective, so that one has to exploit the tails of the mass distributions measured at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In this case, the LHC sensitivity to new physics signals is influenced significantly by systematic uncertainties associated with the Parton Distribution Functions (PDF), particularly in the valence quark sector relevant for the multi-TeV mass region. As a BSM framework featuring such conditions, we consider the 4-Dimensional Composite Higgs Model (4DCHM), in which multiple $W^\prime$ and $Z^\prime$ broad resonances are present, with strongly correlated properties. By using the QCD tool xFitter, we study the implications on $W^\prime$ and $Z^\prime$ searches in Drell-Yan (DY) lepton decay channels that follow from the reduction of PDF uncertainties obtained through combining high-statistics precision measurements of DY lepton-charge and forward-backward asymmetries. We find that the sensitivity to the BSM states is greatly increased with respect to the case of base PDF sets, thereby enabling one to set more stringent limits on (or indeed discover) such new particles, both independently and in correlated searches.

The CASCADE3 Monte Carlo event generator based on Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton densities is described. Hard processes which are generated in collinear factorization with LO multileg or NLO parton level generators are extended by adding transverse momenta to the initial partons according to TMD densities and applying dedicated TMD parton showers and hadronization. Processes with off-shell kinematics within $k_t$-factorization, either internally implemented or from external packages via LHE files, can be processed for parton showering and hadronization. The initial state parton shower is tied to the TMD parton distribution, with all parameters fixed by the TMD distribution.

Charged lepton pairs are produced copiously in high-energy hadron collisions via electroweak gauge boson exchange, and are one of the most precisely measured final states in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We propose that measurements of lepton angular distributions can be used to improve the accuracy of theoretical predictions for Higgs boson production cross sections at the LHC. To this end, we exploit the sensitivity of the lepton angular coefficient associated with the longitudinal Z-boson polarization to the parton density function (PDF) for gluons resolved from the incoming protons, in order to constrain the Higgs boson cross section from gluon fusion processes. By a detailed numerical analysis using the open-source platform xFitter, we find that high-statistics determinations of the longitudinally polarized angular coefficient at the LHC Run III and high-luminosity HL-LHC improve the PDF systematic uncertainties of the Higgs boson cross section predictions by 50% over a broad range of Higgs boson rapidities.

The Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High Luminosity--Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron-proton and proton-proton operation. This report represents an update of the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) of the LHeC, published in 2012. It comprises new results on parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics in extending the accessible kinematic range in lepton-nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to enhanced luminosity, large energy and the cleanliness of the hadronic final states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, the report represents a detailed updated design of the energy recovery electron linac (ERL) including new lattice, magnet, superconducting radio frequency technology and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described and the lower energy, high current, 3-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution and calibration goals which arise from the Higgs and parton density function physics programmes. The paper also presents novel results on the Future Circular Collider in electron-hadron mode, FCC-eh, which utilises the same ERL technology to further extend the reach of DIS to even higher centre-of-mass energies.

Experimental measurements of Drell-Yan (DY) vector-boson production are available from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and from lower-energy collider and fixed-target experiments. In the region of low vector-boson transverse momenta $q_T$, which is important for the extraction of the $W$-boson mass at the LHC, QCD contributions from non-perturbative Sudakov form factors and intrinsic transverse momentum distributions become relevant. We study the potential for determining such contributions from fits to LHC and lower-energy experimental data, using the framework of low-$q_T$ factorization for DY differential cross sections in terms of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distribution functions. We investigate correlations between different sources of TMD non-perturbative effects, and correlations with collinear parton distributions. We stress the relevance of accurate DY measurements at low masses and with fine binning in transverse momentum for improved determinations of long-distance contributions to Sudakov evolution processes and TMDs.

It has been observed in the literature that measurements of low-mass Drell-Yan (DY) transverse momentum spectra at low center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ are not well described by perturbative QCD calculations in collinear factorization in the region where transverse momenta are comparable with the DY mass. We examine this issue from the standpoint of the Parton Branching (PB) method, combining next-to-leading-order (NLO) calculations of the hard process with the evolution of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions. We compare our predictions with experimental measurements at low DY mass, and find very good agreement. In addition we use the low mass DY measurements at low $\sqrt{s}$ to determine the width $q_s$ of the intrinsic Gauss distribution of the PB-TMDs at low evolution scales. We find values close to what has earlier been used in applications of PB -TMDs to high-energy processes at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and HERA. We find that at low DY mass and low $\sqrt{s}$ even in the region of $p_t/m_{DY} \sim 1$ the contribution of multiple soft gluon emissions (included in the PB-TMDs) is essential to describe themeasurements, while at larger masses ($m_{DY} \sim m_{Z}$) and LHC energies the contribution from soft gluons in the region of $p_t/m_{DY}\sim 1$ is small.

Di-lepton searches for Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) Z' bosons that rely on the analysis of the Breit-Wigner (BW) line shape are appropriate in the case of narrow resonances, but likely not sufficient in scenarios featuring Z' states with large widths. Conversely, alternative experimental strategies applicable to wide Z' resonances are much more dependent than the default bump search analyses on the modelling of QCD higher-order corrections to the production processes, for both signal and background. For heavy Z' boson searches in the di-lepton channel at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the transverse momentum q_T of the di-lepton system peaks at q_T \ltap 10^{-2} M_{ll}, where M_{ll} is the di-lepton invariant mass. We exploit this to treat the QCD corrections by using the logarithmic resummation methods in M_{ll} / q_T to all orders in the strong coupling constant α_s. We carry out studies of Z' states with large width at the LHC by employing the program {\tt reSolve}, which performs QCD transverse momentum resummation up to Next-to-Next-to-Leading Logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. We consider two benchmark BSM scenarios, based on the Sequential Standard Model (SSM) and dubbed `SSM wide' and `SSM enhanced'. We present results for the shape and size of Z' boson signals at the differential level, mapped in both cross section (σ) and Forward-Backward Asymmetry (A_{\rm FB}), and perform numerical investigations of the experimental sensitivity at the LHC Run 3 and High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC).

The QCD evolution of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distribution functions has recently been formulated in a parton branching (PB) formalism. In this approach, soft-gluon coherence effects are taken into account by introducing the soft-gluon resolution scale and exploiting the relation between transverse-momentum recoils and branching scales. In this work we investigate the implications of dynamical, i.e., branching scale dependent, resolution scales. We present both analytical studies and numerical solution of PB evolution equations in the presence of dynamical resolution scales. We use this to compare PB results with other approaches in the literature, and to analyze predictions for transverse momentum distributions in $Z$-boson production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

The two sets of parton densities shown in this work are obtained with the same angular angular ordering condition for the evolution scale and they differ in the chosen scale for the strong coupling evaluation, for which we consider two scenarios: the evolution scale, and the transverse momentum qT from the angular ordering prescription. The transverse momentum dependent densities obtained with the Parton Branching method are applied to two LHC processes: the Drell-Yan pT spectrum and the azimuthal correlation in high pT dijet events. For the Drell-Yan pT spectrum a significant effect from the strong coupling scale choice is observed.

Measurements of the forward-backward asymmetry in neutral-current Drell-Yan di-lepton production have primarily been used for determinations of the weak mixing angle $θ_W$. We observe that, unlike the case of Run-I of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC Run-I), for the first time at the LHC Run-II the reconstructed forward-backward asymmetry has the capability of placing useful constraints on the determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs). By examining the statistical and the PDF uncertainties on the reconstructed forward-backward asymmetry, we investigate its potential for disentangling the flavour content of quark and antiquark PDFs. Access to the valence/sea $u$-quark and to the sea up-type antiquark PDFs, in particular, may be gained by the appropriate use of selection cuts in the rapidity of the emerging lepton pair in regions both near the $Z$-boson peak and away from it, in a manner complementary, though more indirect, to the case of the charged-current asymmetry. We study the extension of these results for the planned high-luminosity (HL) LHC.

The high statistics that will be collected during the LHC Run-II (and beyond) open the path to precision measurements at the TeV scale, where the PDFs will play a crucial role in BSM searches. In the di-lepton final state accurate measurements of the Forward-Backward Asymmetry (AFB) will be available, particularly in the invariant mass region around the Z peak. We show that this observable displays a statistical error which is competitive with that assigned to the existing PDF sets and which will rapidly become smaller than the latter as the integrated luminosity grows, thereby offering a means of constraining the (anti)quark PDFs over a sizeable $(x,Q^2)$ range. In the context of SUSY searches we consider the effects of employing threshold-improved PDFs in a consistent calculation at NLO+NLL of slepton pair production cross sections. The calculations featuring a consistent resummation procedure both at PDF and partonic matrix element level are accompanied by PDF and scale uncertainties, and they provide a reliable and updated theoretical estimation for experimental data analyses at the LHC Run-II.

Collinear and transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton densities are obtained from fits to precision measurements of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) cross sections at HERA. The parton densities are evolved by DGLAP evolution with next-to-leading-order (NLO) splitting functions using the parton branching method, allowing one to determine simultaneously collinear and TMD densities for all flavors over a wide range in $x$, $μ^2$ and $k_t$, relevant for predictions at the LHC. The DIS cross section is computed from the parton densities using perturbative NLO coefficient functions.
Parton densities satisfying angular ordering conditions are presented. Two sets of parton densities are obtained, differing in the renormalization scale choice for the argument in the strong coupling alpha_s. This is taken to be either the evolution scale $μ$ or the transverse momentum $q_t$. While both choices yield similarly good $χ^2$ values for the fit to DIS measurements, especially the gluon density turns out to differ between the two sets.
The TMD densities are used to predict the transverse momentum spectrum of Z-bosons at the LHC.

The relation of the rise of the gluon density at small longitudinal momentum fractions x with the occurrence of saturation, diffraction and multiparton interaction is being studied both experimentally and theoretically. We illustrate key ideas underlying recent progress, and stress the role of different theoretical approaches to small-x QCD evolution in investigations of multiparton interactions.

Abstract:
We study parton-branching solutions of QCD evolution equations and present a method to construct both collinear and transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton densities from this approach. We work with next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy in the strong coupling. Using the unitarity picture in terms of resolvable and non-resolvable branchings, we analyze the role of the soft-gluon resolution scale…

We work with next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy in the strong coupling. Using the unitarity picture in terms of resolvable and non-resolvable branchings, we analyze the role of the soft-gluon resolution scale in the evolution equations. For longitudinal momentum distributions, we find agreement of our numerical calculations with existing evolution programs at the level of better than 1 percent over a range of five orders of magnitude both in evolution scale and in longitudinal momentum fraction. We make predictions for the evolution of transverse momentum distributions. We perform fits to the high-precision deep inelastic scattering (DIS) structure function measurements, and we present a set of NLO TMD distributions based on the parton branching approach.

Abstract:
We show the SM prediction of di-lepton production at the LHC where to the usual Drell-Yan production we add the contribution from Photon-Initiated processes. We discuss the effects of the inclusion of photon interactions in the high invariant mass region (TeV region) and their consequences on BSM heavy Z'-boson searches.

Abstract:
QCD evolution equations can be recast in terms of parton branching processes. We present a new numerical solution of the equations. We show that this parton-branching solution can be applied to analyze infrared contributions to evolution, order-by-order in the strong coupling $α_s$, as a function of the soft-gluon resolution scale parameter. We illustrate that this approach can be used to treat distributions which depend both on longitudinal and on transverse momenta.

We present a study of di-lepton production at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with a particular focus on the contribution resulting from both real and virtual photons in the initial state. We discuss the region of phase space in which the invariant mass of the lepton pair is of the order of several TeV, where searches for new physics phenomena yielding a di-lepton signature are presently carried out. We study both the yield and associated uncertainties for all possible topologies in photon-induced di-lepton production and compare these with what is expected in the standard Drell-Yan channel, where quark-antiquark pairs are responsible for the production of lepton pairs. We analyse the impact of these QED contributions on the expected Standard Model background and on searches for new physics. In this latter case, we use the production of an extra heavy $Z^\prime$-boson predicted by the Sequential Standard Model (SSM) as a benchmark process.

We discuss the effect of the Photon Initiated (PI) process on the dilepton channel at the LHC. Adopting various QED PDF sets, we evaluate the contribution produced by two resolved photons which is not included in the Equivalent Photon Approximation (EPA). We compare the PI central value as predicted by the CTEQ, MRST and NNPDF collaborations. With the NNPDF2.3QED set of replicas we also estimate the PDF uncertainties on the PI central value. We show the effect of the inclusion of the PI contribution and its PDF uncertainties on neutral heavy Z'-boson searches. We explore the two scenarios of narrow and broad resonances, including in the analysis the reconstructed Forward-Backward Asymmetry observable, the latter being less affected by systematics effects.
