Loss of unitarity in an effective field theory is often cured by the appearance of dynamical resonances, revealing the presence of new degrees of freedom. These resonances may manifest themselves when suitable unitarization techniques are implemented in the effective theory, which in the scalar-isoscalar channel require making use of the coupled-channel formalism. Conversely, experimental detection of a resonance may provide interesting information on the couplings and constants of the relevant effective theory. By applying the systematical procedure developed in previous works, we will attempt to accommodate a possible scalar resonance with mass around $650$ GeV for which there is preliminary evidence at the LHC in the vector boson fusion channel. The results are interesting: the resonance can be accommodated within the experimentally allowed range of next-to-leading order coefficients in the HEFT but in a rather non-trivial manner. Interestingly, its width and production cross section turn out to agree with the tentative experimental results.

In this work we explore in detail the presence of scalar resonances in $WW$ fusion process in the context of the LHC experiments working in the theoretical framework provided by Higgs Effective Field Theories (HEFT). While the phenomenology of vector resonances is reasonably understood in the framework of Weinberg sum-rules and unitarization studies, scalar resonances are a lot less constrained and, more importantly do depend on HEFT low-energy effective couplings different from the ones of vector resoances that are difficult to constrain experimentally. More specifically, unitarization techniques combined with the requirement of causality allows us to set non-trivial bounds on Higgs self-interactions. This is due to the need of considering coupled channels in the scalar case along the unitarization process. As a byproduct, we can gain some relevant information on the Higgs sector from $WW\to WW$ elastic processes without needing to consider two Higgs production.

We discuss the connection between the vacuum energy problem and the number of dark matter sectors and its relation to the cancellation of quadratic divergences both in the cosmological constant and simultaneously in the polarization tensor renormalizing the Higgs meson mass. In the absence of global supersymmetry, the cancellations of quartic and quadratic divergences call for a dark Higgs scalar sector. We estimate the number of hidden(dark) gauged Higgs field sectors to be equal to five. The masses of dark bosons may be of the order of the Standard Model boson masses. Then the following picture of the Standard Model emerges: 6 leptons and 6 quarks are accompanied by 6 boson sectors, only one of the latter is realized in the conventional Standard Model.

In this work we interpret the Einstein-Hilbert (EH) Lagrangian of gravitation as the first term of a low-energy effective theory similar to those considered in the chiral Lagrangian approach to low-energy hadron physics or the electroweak chiral Lagragians describing the symmetry breaking sector of the Standard Model (SM). Starting from the one-loop computation of the elastic graviton-graviton scattering amplitude by Dunbar and Norridge, we unitarize the IR regularized partial waves by using the Inverse Amplitude Method (IAM). This method enlarges the regime of applicability of the perturbative results to higher energies of the order of the Plank scale $M_P$ and allows for the possibility of poles in the second Riemann which have the natural interpretation of dynamical resonances. In this work we look for these possible resonances for the $++++$ and $ -- -$ helicity channels and the $J=0$, $2$ and $4$ partial waves.

Some effective field theories exhibit dynamical resonances that, when properly included, mitigate their bad behaviour at high energies. Unitarization of the partial wave amplitudes is the preferred method to unveil such resonances. Interpreting the Einstein-Hilbert theory in the spirit of effective Lagrangians, we implement the Inverse Amplitude Method and unitarize the one-loop level graviton-graviton scattering in pure gravity. Due to the presence of infrared divergences, the analysis requires a careful treatment of the infrared region and the introduction of infrared regulators, carefully selected in order to fulfil perturbative unitarity. No evidence of any graviball is found, in contradiction with a recent study.

Effective field theories are useful tools to search for physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). However, effective theories can lead to non-unitary behavior with fastly growing amplitudes. This unphysical behavior may lead to large sensitivity to SM deviations, making necessary a unitarization of the amplitudes prior to a comparison with experiment. In the present work, we focus on all the processes entering the two-Higgs production by longitudinal $WW$ scattering: we perform a full one-loop calculation of all relevant processes, we determine the necessary counterterms in the on-shell scheme, and we study how the full inclusion of the gauge degrees of freedom modifies the previously computed masses and widths of the dynamical resonances arising from the unitarization process in the vector-isovector channel. Altogether, we are able to provide the technical tools that are needed to study the low-energy couplings in the Higgs effective theory under the requirements of unitarity and causality.

We reassess employing the holographic technique to the description of 4D minimal composite Higgs model with $SO(5)\to SO(4)$ global symmetry breaking pattern. The particular 5D bottom-up holographic treatment is inspired by previous work in the context of QCD and it allows to study spin one and spin zero resonances. The resulting spectrum consists of the states transforming under the unbroken $SO(4)$ subgroup and those with quantum numbers in the $SO(5)/SO(4)$ coset. The spin one states are arranged in linear radial trajectories, and the states from the broken subgroup are generally heavier. The spin zero states from the coset space correspond to the four massless Goldstone bosons in 4D. One of them takes the role of the Higgs boson. Restrictions derived from the experimental constraints (Higgs couplings, $S$ parameter, etc.) are then implemented and we conclude that the model is able to accommodate new vector resonances with masses in the range $2$ TeV to $3$ TeV without encountering phenomenological difficulties. The couplings governing the production of these new states in the processes of the SM gauge boson scattering are also estimated. The method can be extended to other breaking patterns.

We construct the most general low-energy effective lagrangian including local parity violating terms parametrized by an axial chemical potential or chiral imbalance $μ_5$, up to ${\cal O}(p^4)$ order in the chiral expansion for two light flavours. For that purpose, we work within the Chiral Perturbation Theory framework where only pseudo-NGB fields are included, following the external source method. The $\cal{O}(p^2)$ lagrangian is only modified by constant terms, while the $\cal{O}(p^4)$ one includes new terms proportional to $μ_5^2$ and new low-energy constants (LEC), which are renormalized and related to particular observables. In particular, we analyze the corrections to the pion dispersion relation and observables related to the vacuum energy density, namely the light quark condensate, the chiral and topological susceptibilities and the chiral charge density, providing numerical determinations of the new LEC when possible. In particular, we explore the dependence of the chiral restoration temperature $T_c$ with $μ_5$. An increasing $T_c(μ_5)$ is consistent with our fits to lattice data of the ChPT-based expressions. Although lattice uncertainties are still large and translate into the new LEC determination, a consistent physical description of those observables emerges from our present work, providing a theoretically robust model-independent framework for further study of physical systems where parity-breaking effects may be relevant, such as heavy-ion collisions.

This article presents a number of technical tools and results that may be instrumental to discern the nature of the Higgs particle. In scenarios where an additional strongly interacting sector is present in the electroweak theory resulting in a composite Higgs and longitudinal components of the massive gauge bosons, unitarity, analyticity and related techniques will be crucial to understand the properties of such a sector. The situation today may be reminiscent of the pre-QCD days: a strongly interacting theory governs the short-distances, but we have only access to long-distance experiment involving Nambu-Goldstone or pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons. Like in those days we can only rely on symmetry and general properties of field theory. Luckily, unlike in the pre-QCD days, we have now a much clearer idea of what we may be after.
After presenting a classification of the various types of effective theories, we establish the criteria as to under which conditions different representations are possible and their equivalence. We discuss in detail the implications of analyticity, causality and unitarity; describe various unitarization methods and establish the properties of dynamically generated resonances and form factors. The relation to effective Lagrangians with explicit resonances is explained in the context of beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics and the Higgs effective field theory (HEFT). We discuss how various BSM models may be reduced to the HEFT as well as implications from holography and lattice studies in establishing BSM phenomenology. The methods presented are then applied to various processes relevant to disentangle the existence and nature of an extended electroweak symmetry breaking sector visible in $VV$ fusion: two-Higgs production, vector resonances, $γγ$ physics and top-antitop production.

The relations between the low-energy constants of the Chiral Lagrangian and the corresponding constants of the Linear Sigma Model are established as well as the expressions for the decay constant of the $π$-meson in the medium and the mass of the $a_0$. In the large $N_c$ count taken from QCD the correspondence of ChPT and LSM is remarkably good and give a solid ground for search of chiral imbalance manifestation in pion physics. A possible experimental detection of chiral imbalance tracks (and therefore a phase with Local Parity Breaking) in the charged pion decays inside the fireball is outlined.

We revisit the construction of the composite Higgs models in a context of the bottom-up holographic approach. The soft wall framework is under consideration imposing the translation of the $4D$ global symmetry breaking characteristic to the new strongly interacting sector in the $5D$ bulk. The focus stays on the minimal $SO(5)\to SO(4)$ breaking pattern. The $5D$ model has a specific form inspired by the effective models of QCD, representing a generalized sigma model coupled both to the composite resonances and to the SM gauge bosons. The latter are treated as external $4D$ sources and conceptually develop no propagation into the bulk. The holographic description allows for the consideration of spin one and spin zero resonances. The resulting spectrum leads in a natural way to a variety of new composite resonances, four of which represent the massless Goldstone bosons. Existing experimental constraints on the electroweak precision parameters permit to accommodate vector and scalar resonances with masses in the $1 - 2$ TeV range without difficulties, but higher masses are possible too. Moreover, for the SM gauge fields holography provides relevant vacuum polarization amplitudes and mixing with composite resonances. Further considering higher order correlation functions we can formulate semi-quantitative predictions for the effective couplings and cross-sections. These provide additional restrictions that are currently being investigated.

The electroweak chiral Lagrangian and the Inverse Amplitude Method (IAM) are used for analyzing a dynamically generated vector resonance, whose origin would be the (hypothetically strong) self interactions of the longitudinal gauge bosons, $W_L$ and $Z_L$. In the present work we study the production of vector resonances at the LHC by means of the vector boson scattering $WZ \to WZ$ and explore the sensitivities to these resonances for the expected future LHC luminosities. We are assuming that these vector resonances are generated dynamically from the self interactions of the longitudinal gauge bosons, $W_L$ and $Z_L$, and work under the framework of the electroweak chiral Lagrangian to describe in a model independent way the supposedly strong dynamics of these modes. The properties of the vector resonances, mass, width and couplings to the $W$ and $Z$ gauge bosons are derived from the inverse amplitude method approach. We study a 5D bottom-up holographic model that is expected to describe the dynamics of the minimal composite Higgs model characterized by a $SO(5)\to SO(4)$ global symmetry breaking pattern. We assume that the fundamental degrees of freedom are scalars transforming under some representation of $SO(5)$ and subject to some unspecified strong interactions. The holographic description presented here is inspired by previous studies performed in the context of QCD and it allows for the consideration of spin one and spin zero resonances. The resulting spectrum leads in a natural way to a variety of resonances. Namely, those transforming under the unbroken $SO(4)$ subgroup exhibit an exact degeneracy between the two Regge trajectories of vector and scalar channels, while the resonances with quantum numbers in the $SO(5)/ SO(4)$ coset lie on a trajectory of (heavier) spin one states and a non-degenerated one of scalar resonances where the four lowest lying ones are massless. These correspond to the four Goldstone bosons in 4D associated to the global symmetry breaking pattern. Restrictions derived from the experimental constraints (Higgs couplings, $S$ parameter, etc.) are then implemented and we conclude that the model is able to accommodate vector and scalar resonances with masses in the range 1 TeV to 2 TeV without encountering phenomenological difficulties. Extension to generic models characterized by the breaking pattern $SO(N)\to SO(N^\prime<N)$ is straightforward.

This Report summarizes the results of the activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group in the period 2014-2016. The main goal of the working group was to present the state-of-the-art of Higgs physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first part compiles the most up-to-date predictions of Higgs boson production cross sections and decay branching ratios, parton distribution functions, and off-shell Higgs boson production and interference effects. The second part discusses the recent progress in Higgs effective field theory predictions, followed by the third part on pseudo-observables, simplified template cross section and fiducial cross section measurements, which give the baseline framework for Higgs boson property measurements. The fourth part deals with the beyond the Standard Model predictions of various benchmark scenarios of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, extended scalar sector, Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and exotic Higgs boson decays. This report follows three previous working-group reports: Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002), Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002), and Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 3. Higgs properties (CERN-2013-004). The current report serves as the baseline reference for Higgs physics in LHC Run 2 and beyond.

Tantalizing LHC hints suggest that resonances of the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Sector might exist at the TeV scale. We recall a few key meson-meson resonances in the GeV region that could have high-energy analogues which we compare, as well as the corresponding unitarized effective theories describing them. While detailed dynamics may be different, the constraints of unitarity, causality and global-symmetry breaking, incorporated in the Inverse Amplitude Method, allow to carry some intuition over to the largely unmeasured higher energy domain. If the 2 TeV ATLAS excess advances one such new resonance, this could indicate an anomalous q qbar W coupling.

Assuming that these signals are due to resonances resulting from an extended symmetry breaking sector in the standard model and exact custodial symmetry we determine using unitarization methods the values of the relevant low-energy constants in the corresponding effective Lagrangian. Unitarity arguments also predict the widths of these resonances. We introduce unitarized form factors to allow for a proper treatment of the resonances in Monte Carlo generators and a more precise comparison with experiment.

In this work we consider how the appearance of gradients of pseudoscalar condensates in dense systems may possibly influence the transport properties of photons in such a medium as well as other thermodynamic characteristics. We adopt the hypothesis that in regions where the pseudoscalar density gradient is large the properties of photons and fermions are governed by the usual lagrangian extended with a Chern-Simons interaction for photons and a constant axial field for fermions. We find that these new pieces in the lagrangian produce non-trivial reflection coefficients both for photons and fermions when entering or leaving a region where the pseudoscalar has a non-zero gradient. A varying pseudoscalar density may also lead to instability of some fermion and boson modes and modify some properties of the Fermi sea. We speculate that some of these modifications could influence the cooling rate of stellar matter (for instance in compact stars) and have other observable consequences. While quantitative results may depend on precise astrophysical details most of the consequences are quite universal and consideration should be given to this possibility.

We study the Dine-Fischler-Srednicki (DFS) model in the light of the recent Higgs LHC results and electroweak precision data. The DFS model is a natural extension of the two-Higgs doublet model endowed with a Peccei-Quinn symmetry and leading to a physically acceptable axion. For generic couplings, the model reproduces the minimal Standard Model showing only tiny deviations (extreme decoupling scenario) whereas all additional degrees of freedom (with the exception of the axion) are very heavy. Recently, new corners of this model have been highlighted where it may exhibit enlarged global symmetries making the corresponding models technically natural (naturalness scenario). In some cases an additional Higgs could be present at the weak scale. In this case, the new light $0^+$ state would be accompanied by relatively light charged and neutral pseudoscalar Higgses. We will use the oblique corrections, particularly $Δρ$, to constrain the mass spectrum in this case. As a final result, we also work out the non-linear parametrization of the DFS model in the generic case where all scalars except the lightest Higgs and the axion have masses at or beyond the TeV scale.

We present a detailed analysis of the angular distribution associated to the lepton pairs created from these mesons searching for polarization dependencies. Two angular variables are found to carry the main information related to the parity breaking effect. In this work we analyze the propagation of photons in an environment where a strong magnetic field (perpendicular to the photon momenta) coexists with an oscillating cold axion background with the characteristics expected from dark matter in the galactic halo. Qualitatively, the main effect of the combined background is to produce a three-way mixing among the two photon polarizations and the axion. It is interesting to note that in spite of the extremely weak interaction of photons with the cold axion background, its effects compete with those coming from the magnetic field in some regions of the parameter space. We determine (with one plausible simplification) the proper frequencies and eigenvectors as well as the corresponding photon ellipticity and induced rotation of the polarization plane that depend both on the magnetic field and the local density of axions. We also comment on the possibility that some of the predicted effects could be measured in optical table-top experiments.

Dark sectors, consisting of new, light, weakly-coupled particles that do not interact with the known strong, weak, or electromagnetic forces, are a particularly compelling possibility for new physics. Nature may contain numerous dark sectors, each with their own beautiful structure, distinct particles, and forces. This review summarizes the physics motivation for dark sectors and the exciting opportunities for experimental exploration. It is the summary of the Intensity Frontier subgroup "New, Light, Weakly-coupled Particles" of the Community Summer Study 2013 (Snowmass). We discuss axions, which solve the strong CP problem and are an excellent dark matter candidate, and their generalization to axion-like particles. We also review dark photons and other dark-sector particles, including sub-GeV dark matter, which are theoretically natural, provide for dark matter candidates or new dark matter interactions, and could resolve outstanding puzzles in particle and astro-particle physics. In many cases, the exploration of dark sectors can proceed with existing facilities and comparatively modest experiments. A rich, diverse, and low-cost experimental program has been identified that has the potential for one or more game-changing discoveries. These physics opportunities should be vigorously pursued in the US and elsewhere.

The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model is often used as a toy replica of QCD and it is therefore interesting to explore the consequences of adding external vector and axial chemical potentials in this model, mostly motivated by claims that such external drivers could trigger a phase where parity could be broken in QCD. We are also motivated by some lattice analysis that attempt to understand the nature of the so-called Aoki phase using this simplified model. The scattering of longitudinally polarized electroweak bosons is likely to play an important role in the elucidation of the fundamental nature of the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking sector and in determining the Higgs interactions with this sector. In this paper, by making use of the Equivalence Theorem, we determine the renormalization properties of the electroweak effective theory parameters in a model with generic Higgs couplings to the W and Z bosons. When the couplings between the Higgs and the electroweak gauge bosons deviate from their Standard Model values, additional counterterms of O(p^4) in the usual chiral counting are required. We also determine in the same approximation the full radiative corrections to the WL WL->ZL ZL process in this type of models. Assuming custodial invariance, all the related processes can be easily derived from this amplitude.

Our understanding of quantum gravity suggests that at the Planck scale the usual geometry loses its meaning. If so, the quest for grand unification in a large non-abelian group naturally endowed with the property of asymptotic freedom may also lose its motivation. Instead we propose an unification of all fundamental interactions at the Planck scale in the form of a Universal Landau Pole (ULP), at which all gauge couplings diverge. The Higgs quartic coupling also diverges while the Yukawa couplings vanish. The unification is achieved with the addition of fermions with vector gauge couplings coming in multiplets and with hypercharges identical to those of the the Standard Model. The presence of these particles also prevents the Higgs quartic coupling from becoming negative, thus avoiding the instability (or metastability) of the SM vacuum.

WW scattering is dominated at high energies by their longitudinal components, which are the most sensitive to the nature of the electroweak symmetry breaking. Prior to the discovery at the LHC of a Higgs-like particle, unitarization tools were extensively used to show that, in the absence of a light Higgs boson, new resonances resulting from the would-be strongly-interacting electroweak sector would appear, and furthermore these techniques would approximately predict their masses, widths, and signal strengths. With the discovery of a Higgs-like particle now firmly established, we re-investigate these techniques assuming this particle couples exactly as in the SM, but still being open to the possibility of an extended symmetry breaking sector. While the SM itself is free from problems with perturbative unitarity in the electroweak sector, "anomalous" self-couplings of the vector bosons -- low-energy remnants of such higher-energy symmetry breaking sectors -- are easily shown to re-introduce them. We demonstrate how new resonances should still appear in the scattering of EW vector bosons after imposing constraints from unitarity, and we discuss their ability to be probed with current and future LHC data.

We investigate how large baryon densities (and possibly high temperatures) may induce spontaneous parity violation in the composite meson sector of vector-like gauge theory (presumably QCD or techni-QCD) . The analysis at intermediate energy scales is done by using an extended $σ$-model lagrangian that includes two scalar and two pseudoscalar multiplets and fulfills low-energy constraints for vector-like gauge theories. We elaborate on a novel mechanism of parity breaking based on the interplay between lightest and heavier meson condensates, which therefore cannot be realized in the simplest $σ$ model. The results are relevant for an idealized homogeneous and infinite nuclear (quark or techniquark) matter where the influence of density can be examined with the help of a constant chemical potential. The model is able to describe satisfactorily the first-order phase transition to stable nuclear matter, and predicts a second-order phase transition to a state where parity is spontaneously broken. We argue that the parity breaking phenomenon is quite generic when a large enough chemical potential is present. Current quark masses are explicitly taken into account in this work and shown not to change the general conclusions.

This insofar unexplained enhancement could be understood by a combination of two effects leading both to an excess of $e^+e^-$ and $μ^+ μ^-$ pairs with respect to theoretical predictions based on conventional hadronic processes: (a) a modification of the dispersion relation of photons and vector mesons propagating in such a nuclear medium due to local parity breaking; (b) the appearance of new decay channels, forbidden by parity conservation in QCD in the usual vacuum. Possible signatures of this effect and perspectives for its detection are discussed.

How a cold axion background influences photons
Authors:
Domènec Espriu,

Abstract:
A cold relic axion condensate resulting from vacuum misalignment in the early universe oscillates with a frequency \sim m_a, where m_a is the axion mass. We summarize how the properties of photons propagating in such a medium are modified. Although the effects are small due to the magnitude of the axion-photon coupling, some consequences are striking.

A cold relic axion condensate resulting from vacuum misalignment in the early universe oscillates with a frequency m, where m is the axion mass. We determine the properties of photons propagating in a simplified version of such a background where the sinusoidal variation is replaced by a square wave profile. We prove that previous results that indicated that charged particles moving fast in such a background radiate, originally derived assuming that all momenta involved were much larger than m, hold for long wavelengths too. We also analyze in detail how the introduction of a magnetic field changes the properties of photon propagation in such a medium. We briefly comment on possible astrophysical implications of these results.

As a striking consequence we propose a novel explanation for the dilepton excess observed in heavy ion collisions at low invariant masses. The presence of local parity breaking due to a time-dependent pseudoscalar condensate substantially modifies the dispersion relation of photons and vector mesons propagating in such a medium, changing the $ρ$ spectral function and resulting in a potentially large excess of dileptons with respect to the predictions based in a `cocktail' of known processes.

Physically this pseudoscalar background could be provided by a relic axion density. The background leads to an explicit breaking of Lorentz invariance; as a consequence processes such as $p\to p γ$ or $e\to e γ$ are possible within some kinematical constraints. The phenomenon is described by the QED lagrangian extended with a Chern-Simons term that contains a 4-vector which characterizes the breaking of Lorentz invariance induced by the time-dependent background. While the radiation induced (similar to the Cherenkov effect) is too small to influence the propagation of cosmic rays in a significant way, the hypothetical detection of the photons radiated by high energy cosmic rays via this mechanism would provide an indirect way of verifying the cosmological relevance of axions. We discuss on the order of magnitude of the effect.

In a previous work we investigated the propagation of fast moving charged particles in a spatially constant but slowly time dependent pseudoscalar background, such as the one provided by cold relic axions. The background induces cosmic rays to radiate in the low-energy spectrum. While the energy loss caused by this mechanism on the primary cosmic rays is negligible, we investigate the hypothetical detection of the photons radiated and how they could provide an indirect way of verifying the cosmological relevance of axions. Assuming that the cosmic ray flux is of the form J(E)~ E^-g we find that the energy radiated follows a distribution k^-((g-1)/2) for proton primaries, identical to the Galaxy synchrotron radiation that is the main background, and k^-(g/2) for electron primaries, which in spite of this sharper decay provide the dominant contribution in the low-energy spectrum. We discuss possible ways to detect this small diffuse contribution. Local detection in the vicinity of powerful cosmic rays emitters might also be possible.
