We study the effects of four-heavy-quark operators in the production of top quarks in the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) at the LHC. In particular, we compute for the first time the total contribution of the four-top-quark operator which enters only at the one-loop level in the top-quark pair production process. Analytical results at one-loop are presented for the gluon- and quark-initiated sub-processes, which allowed a first complete validation of the SMEFT@NLO in Madgraph5_aMC@NLO. The 95% CL bounds on four-heavy-quark operators from the available top-quark pair and four-top-quark production data are provided, which are complementary to other bounds found in the literature. We focus on the comparison of the sensitivities of the top-quark pair and the four-top-quark production processes, where in the latter case the four-top-quark operator contributes at tree-level. We conclude that the sensitivities of the two processes to four-heavy-quark operators are comparable. The projected sensitivities of both processes at HL-LHC are also presented.

We present an update of the Universal FeynRules Output model format, commonly known as the UFO format, that is used by several automated matrix-element generators and high-energy physics software. We detail different features that have been proposed as extensions of the initial format during the last ten years, and collect them in the current second version of the model format that we coin the Universal Feynman Output format. Following the initial philosophy of the UFO, they consist of flexible and modular additions to address particle decays, custom propagators, form factors, the renormalisation group running of parameters and masses, and higher-order quantum corrections.

We for the first time identify all the dimension-8 (dim-8) SMEFT operators that can have an interference with the SM with $E^4/Λ^4$ enhancement in the high energy limit for the processes $q\bar{q}\to WW/WZ$. Our results therefore explicitly show that the non-interference observed for the dimension-six does not extend to dimension-eight. We compute the contributions of those dimension-8 operators to the cross-section at the 14 TeV Large Hadron Collider and compare the results with dimension-6 (dim-6) originated corrections at the order of dim-6-SM interference and dim-6 squared. We find one (two) dim-8 operator(s) can generate amplitudes of a similar order of magnitude compared with their dim-6 squared counterparts assuming unity dimensionless Wilson coefficients. During the study, new non-interference scenarios are found due to the selection rule of angular momentum as well as strong suppression due to the symmetric initial state for the proton-proton collider.

In this work, we study indirect photon signatures of leptophilic dark matter (DM) coming from Centaurus A, where a DM density spike is believed to have survived to date contrary to the case of our galaxy. We consider a model where DM is a Majorana fermion which interacts with right-handed electrons via a scalar mediator. Assuming that the photons measured from the core of Cen A are coming from SM processes, we derive constraints on the average annihilation cross section which are 7 orders of magnitude stronger than the ones from measurements of the Galactic Center. Focusing on the allowed parameter space range, we calculate the flux of photons coming from the radiative DM-electron scattering in the AGN jets and the circular polarisation asymmetry of these photons. We find that this flux is two orders of magnitude lower than the background but its circular polarisation asymmetry can reach values close to $100\%$, indicating the need to experimentally exploit the high fraction of circular polarisation in order to detect these interactions. Since the origin of the photons in the GeV-TeV range from Cen A is not completely clear and an exotic origin is compatible with the measurements as well, we also consider the scenario in which synchrotron radiation can only partially explain the photon flux and we fit the excess with signals coming from DM annihilation, finding a best fit for a DM candidate with a mass $m_{\tildeχ}= 123$ GeV and a coupling $a_R = 0.018$.

In this proceeding, we argue that photon polarisation is an important feature to understand new physics interactions. In particular, circular polarisation can be generated from Beyond the Standard Model interactions if they violate parity and there is an asymmetry in the number density of the initial state particles which participate in the interaction. We consider a simplified model for fermionic (Majorana) DM and study the circularly polarised gamma rays below 10 GeV from DM cosmic ray electron interactions. We study the differential flux of positive and negative polarised photons from the Galactic Centre and show that the degree of circular polarization can reach up to 90%. Finally, we discuss the detection prospects of this signal in future experiments.

We show that only 10 (17) CP-odd operators of the SMEFT give the leading, i.e. least suppressed by the new physics scale, CP-violating contributions once we assume that all fermions are massless but the top (and bottom) quark(s). We start with a short review of previous analyses focusing on operators of our reduced basis and list different observables probing their CP violating effects by direct measurements at colliders and by indirect measurements in low-energy observables. Since CP-odd operators typically lead to phase space suppressed interferences, we quantify the efficiency to revive the interference for various observables found in the literature but also for new observables in diboson production. Our new observables are found to be more efficient on the whole experimental fiducial phase space and are complementary to those presented so far as they probe different combinations of operators and get their sensitivities from different regions of the phase space.

We calculate the differential flux of positive and negative polarised photons from the Galactic Center and show that the degree of circular polarization can reach up to 90%. Finally, once collider and DM constraints have been taken into account, we estimate the required sensitivity from future experiments to detect this signal finding that, although a distinctive peak will be present in the photon flux spectrum, a near future observation is unlikely. However, different sources or models not considered in this work could provide higher intensity fluxes, leading to a possible detection by e-ASTROGAM. In the event of a discovery, we argue that the polarisation fraction is a valuable characterisation feature of the new sector.

If the contributions of the regions where the interference is positive and negative nearly cancel each other, interference effects are hard to measure. In this paper, we propose a method to quantify the ability of an observable to separate an interference positive and negative contributions and therefore to revive the interference effects in measurements. We apply this method to the anomalous gluon operator in the SMEFT for which the interference suppression is well-known. We show that we can get contraints on its coefficient, using the interference only, similar to those obtained by including the square of the new physics amplitude.

Our general implementation, dubbed SMEFT@NLO, covers all types of operators: bosonic, two- and four-fermion ones. Included ultraviolet and rational counterterms presently allow for fully differential predictions, possibly matched to parton shower, up to the one-loop level in the strong coupling or in four-quark operator coefficients. Exact flavor symmetries are imposed among light quark generations and an initial focus is set on top-quark interactions in the fermionic sector. We illustrate the potential of this implementation with novel loop-induced and next-to-leading-order computations relevant for top-quark, electroweak, and Higgs-boson phenomenology at the LHC and future colliders.

We perform a global fit within the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone dark matter (DM) model emerging from an additional complex scalar singlet with a softly broken global U(1) symmetry. Leading to a momentum-suppressed DM-nucleon cross section at tree level, the model provides a natural explanation for the null results from direct detection experiments. Our global fit combines constraints from perturbative unitarity, DM relic abundance, Higgs invisible decay, electroweak precision observables and latest Higgs searches at colliders. The results are presented in both frequentist and Bayesian statistical frameworks. Furthermore, post-processing our samples, we include the likelihood from gamma-ray observations of $\mathit{Fermi}$-LAT dwarf spheroidal galaxies and compute the one-loop DM-nucleon cross section. We find two favoured regions characterised by their dominant annihilation channel: the Higgs funnel and annihilation into Higgs pairs. Both are compatible with current $\mathit{Fermi}$-LAT observations, and furthermore, can fit the slight excess observed in four dwarfs in a mass range between about 30-300 GeV. While the former region is hard to probe experimentally, the latter can partly be tested by current observations of cosmic-ray antiprotons as well as future gamma-ray observations.

We propose a procedure to cross-validate Monte Carlo implementations of the standard model effective field theory. It is based on the numerical comparison of squared amplitudes computed at specific phase-space and parameter points in pairs of implementations. Interactions are fully linearised in the effective field theory expansion. The squares of linear effective field theory amplitudes and their interference with standard-model contributions are compared separately. Such pairwise comparisons are primarily performed at tree level and a possible extension to the one-loop level is also briefly considered. We list the current standard model effective field theory implementations and the comparisons performed to date.

While these provide powerful constraints on the parton distribution functions (PDFs), they are also sensitive to beyond the Standard Model (BSM) dynamics if these affect the fitted distributions. Here we present a first simultaneous determination of the PDFs and BSM effects from deep-inelastic structure function data by means of the NNPDF framework. We consider representative four-fermion operators from the SM Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), quantify to which extent their effects modify the fitted PDFs, and assess how the resulting bounds on the SMEFT degrees of freedom are modified. Our results demonstrate how BSM effects that might otherwise be reabsorbed into the PDFs can be systematically disentangled.

In our work, we consider the possibility of an enhancement due to the contribution of Standard Model dimension-six effective operators. We show that there are only two relevant operators for this process that are not yet (strongly) constrained by other data. We perform a sensitivity study on the operator coefficients for several benchmark values of energy and integrated luminosity related to the proposed linear colliders such as CLIC, ILC and FCC-ee and we derive expected 95% CL limits for each benchmark scenario.

Proton-proton and proton-photon collisions within these sites produce a charge asymmetry in the distribution of mesons and muons that eventually leads to a net circular polarisation signal as these particles decay radiatively. We find that the fraction of circular polarisation thus produced is at the level of $ 5 \times 10^{-4}$, regardless of the exact beam spectrum, as long as it is made predominantly of protons. While this fraction is very small, the detection of circular polarisation signals in conjunction with high-energy neutrinos would provide an unambiguous signature of the presence of high-energy protons in cosmic accelerators. In Supernovae shocks in particular, this would indicate the presence of relativistic protons hitting stationary protons and/or low-energy photons in the intergalactic or interstellar medium.

This process probes a limited set of top-quark electroweak couplings, i.e. , the same entering the top-quark decay, yet at higher scales and with a different sensitivity. Requiring the production of a $Z$ or $H$ boson in association with single-top significantly extends the sensitivity of this process to new physics, opening up the unique possibility of testing top-Higgs, top-gauge, triple gauge, gauge-Higgs interactions without being dominated by QCD interactions. We consider $tZj$ and $tHj$ production at the LHC, providing predictions at next-to-leading accuracy in QCD in the framework of the standard model effective field theory, including all relevant operators up to dimension six. We perform the first complete study of the sensitivity to new interactions of these processes, highlighting the interplay and complementarity among $tj$, $tZj$ and $tHj$ in simultaneously constraining top-quark, triple gauge, and gauge-Higgs interactions in the current and future runs at the LHC.

These decays are most phenomenologically interesting for the fermiophobic custodial fiveplet states $H_5^0$ and $H_5^{\pm}$ when their masses are below threshold for decays into $WW$, $ZZ$, or $WZ$. We study the allowed branching ratios into these final states using scans over the allowed parameter space, and show how the model can be constrained by LEP searches for a fermiophobic Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The calculation involves evaluating one-loop diagrams in which the loop contains particles with two different masses, some of which do not appear in the existing literature. We give results for these diagrams in a form convenient for numerical implementation using the LoopTools package.

The study of anomalous electromagnetic emission in the sky is the basis of indirect searches for dark matter. It is also a powerful tool to constrain the radiative decay of active neutrinos. Until now, quantitative analyses have focused on the flux and energy spectrum of such an emission; polarisation has never been considered. Here we show that we could be missing out on an essential piece of information. The radiative decay of neutrinos, as well as the interactions of dark matter and neutrinos with Standard Model particles can generate a circular polarisation signal in X-rays or γ-rays. If observed, this could reveal important information about their spatial distribution and particle-antiparticle ratio, and could even reveal the nature of the high-energy particle physics processes taking place in astrophysical sites. The question of the observability of these polarised signatures and their separation from background astrophysical sources is left for future work.

This Report summarizes the results of the activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group in the period 2014-2016. The main goal of the working group was to present the state-of-the-art of Higgs physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first part compiles the most up-to-date predictions of Higgs boson production cross sections and decay branching ratios, parton distribution functions, and off-shell Higgs boson production and interference effects. The second part discusses the recent progress in Higgs effective field theory predictions, followed by the third part on pseudo-observables, simplified template cross section and fiducial cross section measurements, which give the baseline framework for Higgs boson property measurements. The fourth part deals with the beyond the Standard Model predictions of various benchmark scenarios of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, extended scalar sector, Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and exotic Higgs boson decays. This report follows three previous working-group reports: Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002), Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002), and Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 3. Higgs properties (CERN-2013-004). The current report serves as the baseline reference for Higgs physics in LHC Run 2 and beyond.

We present predictions at the next-to-leading order accuracy in QCD that include matching to parton showers and that rely on fully automated simulations. We show the importance of the subsequent reduction of the theoretical uncertainties in improving the possible discrimination between effective field theory and standard model results, and we demonstrate that the range of the Wilson coefficient values allowed by a global fit to LEP and LHC Run~I data can be further constrained by LHC Run~II future results.

We present predictions for the total cross section for the production of a charged Higgs boson in the intermediate-mass range ($m_{H^{\pm}}\sim m_t$) at the LHC, focusing on a type-II two-Higgs-doublet model. Results are obtained at next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in QCD perturbation theory, by studying the full process $pp\to H^\pm W^\mp b \bar b$ in the complex-(top)-mass scheme with massive bottom quarks. Compared to lowest-order predictions, NLO corrections have a sizeable impact: they increase the cross section by roughly 50\% and reduce uncertainties due to scale variations by more than a factor of two. Our computation reliably interpolates between the low- and high-mass regime. Our results provide the first NLO prediction for charged Higgs production in the intermediate-mass range and therefore allow to have NLO accurate predictions in the full $m_{H^{\pm}}$ range. The extension of our results to different realisations of the two-Higgs-doublet model or to the supersymmetric case is also discussed.

We present total and differential cross sections as well as branching ratios as a function of the mass and the collision energy also considering the case of non-universal couplings to standard model particles. We find that the next-to-leading order corrections give rise to sizeable $K$ factors for many channels, in some cases exposing the unitarity-violating behaviour of non-universal couplings scenarios, and in general greatly reduce the theoretical uncertainties. Our predictions are publicly available in the MadGraph5\_aMC@NLO framework and can, therefore, be directly used in experimental simulations of spin-two particle production for arbitrary values of the mass and couplings.

We carry out a detailed study of multi-Higgs production processes in the gluon fusion channel in the high energy regime relevant to Future Circular hadron colliders and in the high-Higgs-multiplicity limit (> 20). Our results are based on the computation of the leading polygons - the triangles, boxes, pentagons and hexagons - to the scattering processes, further combined with the subsequent branchings to reach high final state multiplicities. The factorial growth of the number of diagrams leads to an exponential enhancement of such large multiplicity cross-sections and, ultimately, in breaking of perturbativity. We find that the characteristic energy and multiplicity scales where these perturbative rates become highly enhanced and grow with increasing energy are within the 100 TeV regime with of the order of 130 Higgses (or more) in the final state. We also show that already for a 50 TeV hadron collider the perturbative cross-sections for 140 bosons are at picobarn level.

Our simple and efficient modeling of the vector boson fusion (VBF) $W^\pmγ\rightarrow N\ell^\pm$ and $N\ell^\pm+nj$ signal definitions resolve collinear and soft divergences that have plagued past studies, and is applicable to other color-singlet processes, e.g., associated Higgs $(W^\pm h)$, sparticle $(\tilde{\ell}^\pm\tilde{ν_\ell})$, and charged Higgs $(h^{\pm\pm}h^{\mp})$ production. We present, for the first time, a comparison of all leading $N$ production modes, including both gluon fusion (GF) $gg\rightarrow Z^*/h^*\rightarrow N\overset{(-)}{ν_\ell}$ and VBF. We obtain fully differential results up to next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD accuracy using a Monte Carlo tool chain linking FeynRules, N{\small LO}CT, and MadGraph5\_aMC@NLO. Associated model files are publicly available. At the 14 TeV LHC, the leading order GF rate is small and comparable to the NLO $N\ell^\pm+1j$ rate; at a future 100 TeV Very Large Hadron Collider, GF dominates for $m_N={300-1500}$ GeV, beyond which VBF takes lead.

We focus on the production of the fermiophobic custodial fiveplet scalars H_5^0, H_5^+/-, and H_5^++/-- through vector boson fusion (VBF), associated production with a vector boson (V H_5), and scalar pair production (H_5 H_5). For these production mechanisms we compute NLO corrections to production rates as well as to differential distributions. Our results demonstrate that the Standard Model (SM) overall K-factors for such processes cannot in general be directly applied to beyond-the-SM distributions, due both to differences in the scalar electroweak charges and to variation of the K-factors over the differential distributions.

In this paper we study the production of a heavy charged Higgs boson in association with heavy quarks at the LHC, in a type-II two-Higgs-doublet model. We present for the first time fully-differential results obtained in the four-flavour scheme at NLO accuracy, both at fixed order and including the matching with parton showers. Relevant differential distributions are studied for two values of the charged boson mass and a thorough comparison is performed between predictions obtained in the four- and five-flavour schemes. We show that the agreement between the two schemes is improved by NLO(+PS) corrections for observables inclusive in the degrees of freedom of bottom quarks. We argue that the four-flavour scheme leads to more reliable predictions, thanks to its accurate description of the bottom-quark kinematics and its small dependence on the Monte Carlos, which in turn is rather large in the five-flavour scheme. A detailed set of recommendations for the simulation of this process in experimental analyses at the LHC is provided.

The computation of renormalized one-loop amplitudes in quantum field theory requires not only the knowledge of the Lagrangian density and the corresponding Feynman rules, but also that of the ultraviolet counterterms. More in general, and depending also on the methods used in the actual computation of the one-loop amplitudes, additional interactions might be needed. One example is that of the R2 rational terms in the OPP method. In this paper, we argue that the determination of all elements necessary for loop computations in arbitrary models can be automated starting only from information on the Lagrangian at the tree-level. In particular, we show how the R2 rational and ultraviolet counterterms for any renormalizable model can be computed with the help of a new package, which we name NLOCT and builds upon FeynRules and FeynArts. To show the potential of our approach, we calculate all additional rules that are needed to promote a Two Higgs Doublet Model Lagrangian to one-loop computations in QCD and electroweak couplings.

With the discovery of the Higgs boson, the spectrum of particles in the Standard Model (SM) is complete. It is more important than ever to perform precision measurements and to test for deviations from SM predictions in the electroweak sector. In this report, we investigate two themes in the arena of precision electroweak measurements: the electroweak precision observables (EWPOs) that test the particle content and couplings in the SM and the minimal supersymmetric SM, and the measurements involving multiple gauge bosons in the final state which provide unique probes of the basic tenets of electroweak symmetry breaking. Among the important EWPOs we focus our discussion on M_W and sin^2 theta_eff^l, and on anomalous quartic gauge couplings probed by triboson production and vector boson scattering. We investigate the thresholds of precision that need to be achieved in order to be sensitive to new physics. We study the precision that can be achieved at various facilities on these observables. We discuss the calculational tools needed to predict SM rates and distributions in order to perform these measurements at the required precision. The program FeynRules is a Mathematica package developed to facilitate the implementation of new physics theories into high-energy physics tools. Starting from a minimal set of information such as the model gauge symmetries, its particle content, parameters and Lagrangian, FeynRules provides all necessary routines to extract automatically from the Lagrangian (that can also be computed semi-automatically for supersymmetric theories) the associated Feynman rules. These can be further exported to several Monte Carlo event generators through dedicated interfaces, as well as translated into a Python library, under the so-called UFO model format, agnostic of the model complexity, especially in terms of Lorentz and/or color structures appearing in the vertices or of number of external legs. In this work, we briefly report on the most recent new features that have been added to FeynRules, including full support for spin-3/2 fermions, a new module allowing for the automated diagonalization of the particle spectrum and a new set of routines dedicated to decay width calculations.

Deviations from the SM in Higgs and gauge boson properties due to new physics at a higher energy scale can be parameterized by higher-dimension operators in an Effective Field Theory (EFT). New physics signal in top physics

Abstract:
Effective field theories provide a model independent parametrization of the physics beyond the SM if the new degrees of freedom are heavy and complement thus the searches for resonances. In this talk, I will apply this method to the top sector which is expected to play a special role in many BSM scenarios. I will then show the effects of those dimension-six operators on cross-sections and distribu…

Abstract:
We advocate an effective field theory approach to anomalous couplings. The effective field theory approach is the natural way to extend the standard model such that the gauge symmetries are respected. It is general enough to capture any physics beyond the standard model, yet also provides guidance as to the most likely place to see the effects of new physics. The effective field theory approach al…

The effective field theory approach is the natural way to extend the standard model such that the gauge symmetries are respected. It is general enough to capture any physics beyond the standard model, yet also provides guidance as to the most likely place to see the effects of new physics. The effective field theory approach also clarifies that one need not be concerned with the violation of unitarity in scattering processes at high energy. We apply these ideas to pair production of electroweak vector bosons.

Effective interactions involving both the top quark and the Higgs field are among the least constrained of all possible (gauge invariant) dimension-six operators in the Standard Model. Such a handful of operators, in particular the top quark chromomagnetic dipole moment, might encapsulate signs of the new physics responsible for electroweak symmetry breaking. In this work, we compute the contributions of these operators to inclusive Higgs and t tbar h production. We argue that: i) rather strong constraints on the overall size of these operators can already be obtained from the current limits/evidence on Higgs production at the LHC; ii) t tbar h production will provide further key information that is complementary to t tbar measurements, and the possibility of discriminating among different contributions by performing accurate measurements of total and differential rates.

Abstract:
We present a new model format for automatized matrix-element generators, the so- called Universal FeynRules Output (UFO). The format is universal in the sense that it features compatibility with more than one single generator and is designed to be flexible, modular and agnostic of any assumption such as the number of particles or the color and Lorentz structures appearing in the interaction vertic…

We present a new model format for automatized matrix-element generators, the so- called Universal FeynRules Output (UFO). The format is universal in the sense that it features compatibility with more than one single generator and is designed to be flexible, modular and agnostic of any assumption such as the number of particles or the color and Lorentz structures appearing in the interaction vertices. Unlike other model formats where text files need to be parsed, the information on the model is encoded into a Python module that can easily be linked to other computer codes. We then describe an interface for the Mathematica package FeynRules that allows for an automatic output of models in the UFO format.

Abstract:
We study the phenomenology of same sign top pair production at the LHC in a model-independent way. The complete set of dimension six operators involving two top (or anti-top) quarks is introduced and the connection with all possible t- or s-channel particle exchanges is established. Only in the former case, same and opposite sign top pair production can be related. We find that while current Tevat…

We use top quark pair production as a probe of top-philic non-resonant new physics. Following a low energy effective field theory approach, we calculate several key observables in top quark pair production at hadron colliders (e.g., total cross section, ttbar invariant mass distribution, forward-backward asymmetry, spin correlations) including the interference of the Standard Model with dimension-six operators. We determine the LHC reach in probing new physics after having taken into account the Tevatron constraints. In particular, we show that the gluon fusion process gg -> ttbar which remains largely unconstrained at the Tevatron is affected by only one top-philic dimension-six operator, the chromo-magnetic moment of the top quark. This operator can be further constrained by the LHC data as soon as a precision of about 20% is reached for the total ttbar cross-section. While our approach is general and model-independent, it is particularly relevant to models of Higgs and top compositeness, which we consider in detail, also in connection with ttbar ttbar and ttbar bbbar production.
