CPT and Lorentz symmetry tests with hydrogen using a novel in-beam hyperfine spectroscopy method applicable to antihydrogen experiments

Abstract: We present a Rabi-type measurement of two ground-state hydrogen hyperfine transitions performed in two opposite external magnetic field directions. This puts first constraints at the level of 2.3 10^-21 GeV on a set of coefficients of the Standard Model Extension, which were not measured by previous experiments. Our value, nu_0 = 1.420 405 751 63(63) GHz, is in agreement with literature at a relative precision of 0.44 ppb. The Extra-Low ENergy Antiproton ring at CERN, commissioned at the AD in 2018, now supplies a bunch of electron-cooled antiprotons at a fixed energy of 100 keV. GRASIAN: Towards the first demonstration of gravitational quantum states of atoms with a cryogenic hydrogen beam

Abstract: At very low energies, a light neutral particle above a horizontal surface can experience quantum reflection. The quantum reflection holds the particle against gravity and leads to gravitational quantum states (GQS). So far, GQS were only observed with neutrons as pioneered by Nesvizhevsky and his collaborators at ILL. However, the existence of GQS is predicted also for atoms. The GRASIAN-collaboration pursues the first observation and studies of GQS of atomic hydrogen. We propose to use atoms in order to exploit the fact that orders of magnitude larger fluxes compared to those of neutrons are available. Moreover, recently the qBounce collaboration, performing GQS spectroscopy with neutrons, reported a discrepancy between theoretical calculations and experiment which deserves further investigations. For this purpose, we set up a cryogenic hydrogen beam at 6 K. We report on our preliminary results, characterizing the hydrogen beam with pulsed laser ionization diagnostics at 243 nm. △ Less

First results of the CAST-RADES haloscope search for axions at 34.67 $μ$eV

A radio frequency cavity consisting of 5 sub-cavities coupled by inductive irises took physics data inside the CAST dipole magnet for the first time using this filter-like haloscope geometry. An exclusion limit with a 95% credibility level on the axion-photon coupling constant of g$_{aγ}\gtrsim 4\times10^{-13} \text{GeV}^{-1}$ over a mass range of 34.6738 $μ$eV < $m_a$ < 34.6771 $μ$eV is set. This constitutes a significant improvement over the current strongest limit set by CAST at this mass and is at the same time one of the most sensitive direct searches for an axion dark matter candidate above the mass of 25 $μ$eV. The results also demonstrate the feasibility of exploring a wider mass range around the value probed by CAST-RADES in this work using similar coherent resonant cavities. △ Less

Search for the Decay $B_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η$

Abstract: In the Standard Model (SM) charmless hadronic decays $B_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η$ proceed via tree-level $b\to u$ and penguin $b\to s$ transitions. Penguin transitions are sensitive to Beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) physics scenarios and could affect the branching fractions and {\it CP} asymmetries in such decays. In heavy-ion collisions, the hydrodynamic expansion of the Quark-Gluon Plasma is one of the possible explanations of the origin of the ridge signal. Measurements in the $e^+e^-$ collision system, without the complexities introduced by hadron structure in the initial state, can serve as a complementary probe to examine the formation of a ridge signal. The first measurement of two-particle angular correlation functions in high multiplicity $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=10.52$ GeV is reported. The hadronic $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB are used in this study. Two-particle angular correlation functions are measured over the full azimuth and large pseudorapidity intervals which are defined by either the electron beam axis or the event thrust as a function of charged particle multiplicity. The measurement in the event thrust analysis, with mostly outgoing quark pairs determining the reference axis, is sensitive to the region of additional soft gluon emissions. No significant ridge signal is observed with either coordinates analyses. Near side jet correlations appear to be absent in the thrust axis analysis. The measurements are compared to predictions from various event generators and expected to provide new constraints to the phenomenological models in the low energy regime. △ Less

Efficient $2^3S$ positronium production by stimulated decay from the $3^3P$ level

Abstract: We investigate experimentally the possibility of enhancing the production of $2^3S$ positronium atoms by driving the $1^3S$-$3^3P$ and $3^3P$-$2^3S$ transitions, overcoming the natural branching ratio limitation of spontaneous decay from $3^3P$ to $2^3S$. The decay of $3^3P$ positronium atoms towards the $2^3S$ level has been effciently stimulated by a 1312.2nm broadband IR laser pulse. The measured values are $\mathcal{R}(D)= 0.307 \pm 0.037 \pm 0.016$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^{\ast})= 0.283 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.014$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions within $0.2$ and $1.1$ standard deviations, respectively, while their combination agrees with the Standard Model predictions within $1.2$ standard deviations. △ Less

Abstract: The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will be the accelerator-based flagship research facility in many basic sciences and their applications in Europe for the coming decades. FAIR will open up unprecedented research opportunities in hadron and nuclear physics, in atomic physics and nuclear astrophysics as well as in applied sciences like materials research, plasma physics and radiati… ▽ More The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will be the accelerator-based flagship research facility in many basic sciences and their applications in Europe for the coming decades. FAIR will open up unprecedented research opportunities in hadron and nuclear physics, in atomic physics and nuclear astrophysics as well as in applied sciences like materials research, plasma physics and radiation biophysics with applications towards novel medical treatments and space science. FAIR is currently under construction as an international facility at the campus of the GSI Helmholtzzentrum for Heavy-Ion Research in Darmstadt, Germany. While the full science potential of FAIR can only be harvested once the new suite of accelerators and storage rings is completed and operational, some of the experimental detectors and instrumentation are already available and will be used starting in summer 2018 in a dedicated research program at GSI, exploiting also the significantly upgraded GSI accelerator chain. The current manuscript summarizes how FAIR will advance our knowledge in various research fields ranging from a deeper understanding of the fundamental interactions and symmetries in Nature to a better understanding of the evolution of the Universe and the objects within. △ Less

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the $D^{\ast -}$ meson polarization in the decay $B^0 \to D^{*-} τ^+ν_τ$ using the full data sample of 772$\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider. Abstract: We present the result of the search for the rare $B$ meson decay of $B^+ \to \ell^{\,+} ν_{\ell} γ$ with $\ell =e,μ$. Signal candidates are reconstructed for photon energies $E_γ$ larger than $1 \, \mathrm{GeV}$ using a novel multivariate tagging algorithm. The novel algorithm fully reconstructs the second $B$ meson produced in the collision using hadronic modes and was specifically trained to recognize the signal signature in combination with hadronic tag-side $B$ meson decays. This approach greatly enhances the performance. Background processes that can mimic this signature, mainly charmless semileptonic decays and continuum processes, are suppressed using multivariate methods. The number of signal candidates is determined by analyzing the missing mass squared distribution as inferred from the signal side particles and the kinematic properties of the tag-side $B$ meson. No significant excess over the background-only hypothesis is observed and upper limits on the partial branching fraction $ Δ\mathcal{B} $ with $E_γ> 1 \, \mathrm{GeV}$ individually for electron and muon final states as well as for the average branching fraction of both lepton final states are reported. We find a Bayesian upper limit of $Δ\mathcal{B}( B^{+} \to \ell^{\, +} ν_{\ell} γ) < 3.0 \times 10^{-6}$ at 90% CL and also report an upper limit on the first inverse moment of the light-cone distribution amplitude of the $B$ meson of $λ_B$ at 90% CL. △ Less

We set limits on the branching fractions of such processes in the mass ranges $M_{A^{0}} <$ 8.97 $\textrm{GeV/}\textit{c}^{2}$ and $M_χ <$ 4.44 $\textrm{GeV/}\textit{c}^{2}$. We then use the limits on the off-shell process to set competitive limits on WIMP-nucleon scattering in the WIMP mass range below 5 $\textrm{GeV/}\textit{c}^{2}$. △ Less

The analysis is performed on a data sample of 711 $\rm{fb}^{-1}$ collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. We obtain a branching fraction of $(3.60\pm0.33\pm0.15)\times10^{-6}$ and an $\mathcal{A}_{CP}$ of $(-8.5\pm8.9\pm0.2)\%$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. Using a sum-of-exclusive technique with invariant $X_s$ mass up to 2.8~GeV/$c^2$, we obtain $Δ_{0-} = \bigl[-0.48 \pm 1.49 {\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.97 {\rm (syst.)} \pm 1.15 {(f_{+-}/f_{00})}\bigr]$\% and $ΔA_{CP} = \bigl[+3.69 \pm 2.65 {\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.76{\rm (syst.)}\bigr]$\%, where the last uncertainty for $Δ_{0-}$ is due to the uncertainty on the production ratio of $B^+B^-$ to $B^0\bar{B}^0$ in $Υ(4S)$ decays. The measured value of $Δ_{0-}$ is consistent with zero, allowing us to constrain the resolved photon contribution in the $B \to X_s γ$, and improve the branching fraction prediction. The result for $ΔA_{CP}$ is consistent with the prediction of the SM. We also measure the direct $CP$ asymmetries for charged and neutral $B \to X_s γ$ decays. Abstract: We report evidence for the charged charmed-strange baryon $Ξ_{c}(2930)^+$ with a signal significance of 3.9$σ$ with systematic errors included. The charged $Ξ_{c}(2930)^+$ is found in its decay to $K_{S}^{0} Λ_{c}^+$ in the substructure of $\bar{B}^{0} \to K^{0}_{S} Λ_{c}^{+} \barΛ_{c}^{-}$ decays. We also measure $\cal{B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to \bar{K}^{0} Λ_{c}^{+} \barΛ_{c}^{-}) = [3.99 \pm 0.76(\rm stat.) \pm 0.51(\rm syst.)] \times 10^{-4}$ with greater precision than previous experiments, and present the results of a search for the charmonium-like state $Y(4660)$ and its spin partner, $Y_η$, in the $Λ_{c}^{+}\barΛ_{c}^{-}$ invariant mass spectrum. No clear signals of the $Y(4660)$ or $Y_η$ are observed and the 90\% credibility level (C.L.) upper limits on their production rates are determined. We also investigate the energy dependence of the $e^+e^-\toπ^+π^-π^0χ_{bJ}$ cross section, but we cannot determine whether the contributions are from the $Υ(10860)$ and $Υ(11020)$ resonances or non-resonant continuum processes. The signals for $e^+e^-\to φχ_{bJ}$ are not significant, and the upper limits of the Born cross sections at the 90\% confidence level are $0.7$ and $1.0$~pb for $e^+e^-\to φχ_{b1}$ and $φχ_{b2}$, respectively, for center-of-mass energies from 10.96 to 11.05~GeV. △ Less

Abstract: Using data recorded with the Belle detector, we observe a new excited hyperon, an $Ω^{*-}$ candidate decaying into $Ξ^0K^-$ and $Ξ^-K^0_S$ with a mass of $2012.4\pm0.7\ {\rm (stat)\pm\ 0.6\ (\rm syst)}\ {\rm MeV}/c^2$ and a width of $Γ=6.4^{+2.5}_{-2.0}\ {\rm(stat)}\pm1.6\ {\rm(syst)}\ {\rm MeV}$. The products of the two-photon decay width and branching fraction (B) of decays to eta'pi+ pi- are determined to be Γ_{gamma gamma}B = [65.4\pm2.6~(stat.)\pm6.9~(syst.)] eV for eta_c(1S) and [5.6^{+1.2}_{-1.1}~(stat.)\pm1.1~(syst.)] eV for eta_c(2S). A new decay mode for the eta_c(1S) to eta'f_0(2080) with f_0(2080) to pi+ pi- is observed with a statistical significance of 20sigma. The f_0(2080) mass and width are determined to be M = [2083^{+63}_{-66}~(stat.)\pm 32~(syst.)] MeV/c^{2} and Γ= [178^{+60}_{-178}~(stat.) \pm 55~(syst.)] MeV. Search for $B^{-}\toμ^{-}\barν_μ$ Decays at the Belle Experiment

Abstract: We report the result of a search for the decay $B^{-}\toμ^{-}\barν_μ$. The signal events are selected based on the presence of a high momentum muon and the topology of the rest of the event showing properties of a generic $B$-meson decay, as well as the missing energy and momentum being consistent with the hypothesis of a neutrino from the signal decay. We find a 2.4 standard deviation excess abov… ▽ More We report the result of a search for the decay $B^{-}\toμ^{-}\barν_μ$. Abstract: We report the first observation of the $Ξ_{c}(2930)^0$ charmed-strange baryon with a significance greater than 5$σ$. The $Ξ_{c}(2930)^0$ is found in its decay to $K^- Λ_{c}^+$ in $B^{-} \to K^{-} Λ_{c}^{+} \barΛ_{c}^{-}$ decays. No clear signals of the $Y(4660)$ nor its spin partner are observed and the 90\% credibility level (C.L.) upper limits on their production rates are determined. Search for light tetraquark states in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays

The inclusive branching fractions of the $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays into final states with $f_1(1285)$ are measured to be ${\cal B}(Υ(1S)\to f_1(1285)+anything)=(46\pm28({\rm stat.})\pm13({\rm syst.}))\times 10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(Υ(2S)\to f_1(1285)+anything)=(22\pm15({\rm stat.})\pm6.3({\rm syst.}))\times 10^{-4}$. The measured $χ_{b2} \to J/ψ+ anything$ branching fraction is measured to be $(1.50\pm0.34({\rm stat.})\pm0.22({\rm syst.}))\times 10^{-3}$, and 90\% C.L. upper limits for the $χ_{b0,b1} \to J/ψ+ anything$ branching fractions are found to be $2.3\times 10^{-3}$ and $1.1\times 10^{-3}$, respectively. For ${\cal B}(χ_{b1} \to ω+ anything)$, the branching fraction is measured to be $(4.9\pm1.3({\rm stat.})\pm0.6({\rm syst.}))\times 10^{-2}$. %($<3.68\times 10^{-2}$ at 90\% C.L.). Measurement of the tau Michel parameters $\barη$ and $ξκ$ in the radiative leptonic decay $τ^- \rightarrow \ell^- ν_τ \barν_{\ell}γ$

Abstract: We present a measurement of the Michel parameters of the $τ$ lepton, $\barη$ and $ξκ$, in the radiative leptonic decay $τ^- \rightarrow \ell^- ν_τ \barν_{\ell} γ$ using 711~f$\mathrm{b}^{-1}$ of collision data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. The Michel parameters are measured in an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the kinematic distribution of $e^+e^-\rightarrowτ^+τ^-\rightarrow (π^+π^0 \barν_τ)(\ell^-ν_τ\barν_{\ell}γ)$ $(\ell=e$ or $μ)$. The measured values of the Michel parameters are $\barη = -1.3 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.8$ and $ξκ= 0.5 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.2$, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. This is the first measurement of these parameters. These results are consistent with the Standard Model predictions within their uncertainties and constrain the coupling constants of the generalized weak interaction. △ Less

Here, $X_{c\bar{c}}$ denotes $η_{c}$, $J/ψ$, $χ_{c0}$, $χ_{c1}$, $η_{c}(2S)$, $ψ(2S)$, $ψ(3770)$, $X(3872)$, and $X(3915)$. We do not observe significant signals for $X(3872)$ nor $X(3915)$, and set the 90$\%$ confidence level upper limits: ${\cal B}(B^{+} \to X(3872) K^{+} )<2.7 \times 10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(B^{+} \to X(3915) K^{+} )<2.9 \times 10^{-4}$. These represent the most stringent upper limit for ${\cal B}(B^{+} \to X(3872) K^{+} )$ to date and the first measurement for ${\cal B}(B^{+} \to X(3915) K^{+} )$. The measured branching fractions for $η_{c}$ and $η_{c}(2S)$ are the most precise to date: ${\cal B}(B^{+} \to η_{c} K^{+} )=(12.3\pm0.8\pm0.7) \times 10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(B^{+} \to η_{c}(2S)K^{+}) =(4.9\pm1.1\pm0.3) \times 10^{-4}$ , where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. △ Less

We search for the decay $Υ(1^3D_{1,2})\toηΥ(1S)$, but do not find significant evidence for such a transition. We also measure the initial state radiation production cross sections of the $Υ(2S,3S)$ resonances and we find values compatible with the expected ones. Finally, the analysis of the $Υ(4S)\toπ^+π^-Υ(1S)$ events shows indications for a resonant contribution due to the $f_0(980)$ meson. △ Less

Evidence for Isospin Violation and Measurement of $CP$ Asymmetries in $B \to K^{\ast}(892) γ$

Abstract: We report the first evidence for isospin violation in $B \to K^* γ$ and the first measurement of difference of $CP$ asymmetries between $B^+ \to K^{*+} γ$ and $B^0 \to K^{*0} γ$. This analysis is based on the data sample containing $772 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs that was collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric $e^+ e^-$ collider. We find evidence for the isospin violation… ▽ More We report the first evidence for isospin violation in $B \to K^* γ$ and the first measurement of difference of $CP$ asymmetries between $B^+ \to K^{*+} γ$ and $B^0 \to K^{*0} γ$. This analysis is based on the data sample containing $772 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs that was collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric $e^+ e^-$ collider. We find evidence for the isospin violation with a significance of 3.1$σ$, $Δ_{0+} = (+6.2 \pm 1.5 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.6 ({\rm syst.}) \pm 1.2 (f_{+-}/f_{00}))$\%, where the third uncertainty is due to the uncertainty on the fraction of $B^+B^-$ to $B^0\bar{B}^0$ production in $Υ(4S)$ decays. The measured value is consistent with predictions of the SM. The result for the difference of $CP$ asymmetries is $ΔA_{CP} = (+2.4 \pm 2.8({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.5({\rm syst.}))$\%, consistent with zero. The measured branching fractions and $CP$ asymmetries for charged and neutral $B$ meson decays are the most precise to date. Search for $Λ_c^+\toφp π^0$ and branching fraction measurement of $Λ_c^+\to K^-π^+ p π^0$

Abstract: We have searched for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay $Λ_c^+\toφpπ^0$ in $e^+e^-$ collisions using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 915 $\rm fb^{-1}$. The data were collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ asymmetric-energy collider running at or near the $Υ(4S)$ and $Υ(5S)$ resonances. No significant signal is observed, and we set an upper limit on the branchin… ▽ More We have searched for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay $Λ_c^+\toφpπ^0$ in $e^+e^-$ collisions using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 915 $\rm fb^{-1}$. The data were collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ asymmetric-energy collider running at or near the $Υ(4S)$ and $Υ(5S)$ resonances. No significant signal is observed, and we set an upper limit on the branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\to φpπ^0) <15.3\times10^{-5}$ at 90% confidence level. The contribution for nonresonant $Λ_c^+\to K^+K^- pπ^0$ decays is found to be consistent with zero and the corresponding upper limit on its branching fraction is set to be $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\to K^+K^-pπ^0)_{\rm NR} <6.3\times10^{-5} $ at 90% confidence level. We also measure the branching fraction for the Cabibbo-favored decay $Λ_c^+\to K^-π^+pπ^0$; the result is $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\to K^-π^+pπ^0)= (4.42\pm0.05\, (\rm stat.) \pm 0.12\, (\rm syst.) \pm 0.16\, (\mathcal{B}_{\rm Norm}))\%$, which is the most precise measurement to date. Finally, we have searched for an intermediate hidden-strangeness pentaquark decay $P^+_s\toφp$. We see no evidence for this intermediate decay and set an upper limit on the product branching fraction of ${\cal B}(Λ_c^+\to P^+_s π^0)\times {\cal B}(P^+_s\toφp) <8.3\times 10^{-5}$ at 90% confidence level. △ Less
