The leptonic decay $B_s \to μ^+μ^-$ is both rare and theoretically clean, making it an excellent probe for New Physics searches. Due to its helicity suppression in the Standard Model, this decay is particularly sensitive to new (pseudo)-scalar contributions. We present a new strategy for detecting CP-violating New Physics contributions of this kind, exploiting two observables: $\adg$, which is accessible due to the sizeable decay width difference of the $B_s$ system, and the mixing-induced CP asymmetry $\smumu$. We also utilize information from semileptonic $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ decays. Using the currently available experimental information, we find remarkably constrained regions in the $\adg$--$\smumu$ plane that serve as promising targets for future measurements.

We present theoretical predictions for observables in inclusive $\bar{B}\to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$ suitable for measurements at hadron colliders through a sum-over-exclusive approach. At low $q^2$ we calculate the branching ratio and three angular observables. At high $q^2$ we provide the branching ratio and the ratio of the $\bar B \to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$ rate with respect to the inclusive $\bar B \to X_u \ell \barν$ rate with the same phase-space cut. We compare our predictions to an extraction of the experimental rate through a sum-over-exclusive method using branching ratios of the exclusive $\bar B \to K^{(*)}μ^+μ^-$ modes measured at LHCb. Our analysis does not support a recent claim about a deficit in the inclusive branching ratio in the high-$q^2$ region. Finally, we present current model-independent bounds on new physics and emphasize the potential of complementary analyses of $\bar{B}\to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$ at Belle II and the LHC.

Using the present and foreseen knowledge about exclusive semileptonic $B_{s}^{0}$ decays, we estimate the uncertainties on moments of the kinematic distribution. Semileptonic $B_{s}^{0}$ decays can be described, as their $B^{0}$ counterpart, using the Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE), with the only difference between the $B_{s}^{0}$ and $B^{0}$ mesons being the $SU(3)_F$ breaking effects that change the numerical values of the non-perturbative HQE parameters. We extract the HQE parameters for the $B_{s}^{0}$ decays from our estimates of the moments, showing the potential of the proposed method. We identify a set of required measurements for a future precision measurement.

At first sight, the recent LHCb measurement of $R_K \sim 1$ may seem to largely constrain deviations from universality in these decays. However, we show that this is actually not the case: new sources of CP violation allow for significant universality violation consistent with $R_K \sim 1$. This provides an exciting new opportunity to search for New Physics by measuring differences between CP asymmetries in $B \to Kμ^+μ^-$ and $B \to K e^+e^-$.

The LHCb collaboration has recently reported new results which are in agreement with Lepton Flavour Universality, while the individual decay rates are found below their Standard Model predictions. In view of this new situation, we explore how much space is left for a violation of electron-muon universality. Considering new sources of CP violation and taking the new LHCb measurements into account, we show that significant differences between the short-distance coefficients for electronic and muonic final states are actually allowed by the current data. These patterns can be revealed through CP asymmetries in neutral and charged $B\to K \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays. We obtain correlations between these observables and map them to the short-distance coefficients. This results in regions in New Physics parameter space with large differences between CP asymmetries of the decays with final-state electrons and muons, thereby leaving a lot of room for possible surprises in the future high-precision era.

The $B \to K \ell^+ \ell^-$ system is particularly interesting to explore physics beyond the Standard Model. Such effects could provide new sources of CP violation, thereby giving rise to Wilson coefficients which could not only be real, as assumed in most analyses, but also be complex. We propose a new strategy to extract the complex $C_{9 μ}$, $C_{10 μ}$ from the data, utilising the complementarity of direct CP violation in $B^+\to K^+ μ^+μ^-$ and mixing-induced CP violation arising - in addition to direct CP violation - in $B^0_d \to K_{S} μ^+μ^-$, as well as the differential rate in appropriate $q^2$ bins. The long-distance effects, which play a key role to generate the direct CP asymmetries, cannot be reliably calculated due to their non-perturbative nature. In order to describe them, we apply a model by the LHCb Collaboration employing experimental data. Assuming specific scenarios, we demonstrate the fingerprinting of CP-violating New Physics and the distinction between ambiguities in the model of the long-distance contributions. Finally, New Physics could couple differently to muons and electrons, as probed through the lepton flavour universality ratio $R_K$. We discuss these effects in the presence of CP violation and present a new way to measure the direct CP asymmetries of the $B \to K e^+ e^-$ channels.

Exclusive non-leptonic two-body decays of $B$ mesons have been studied extensively in the past two decades within the framework of factorization. However, the exploration of the corresponding three-body case has only started recently, in part motivated by new data. We consider here the simplest non-leptonic three-body $B$ decays from the point of view of factorization, namely heavy-to-heavy transitions. We provide a careful derivation of the SCET/QCDF factorized amplitudes to NNLO in $α_s$, and discuss the numerical impact of NLO and NNLO corrections. We then study the narrow-width limit, showing that the three-body amplitude reproduces analytically the known quasi-two-body decay amplitudes, and compute finite-width corrections. Finally, we discuss certain observables that are sensitive to perturbative NLO and NNLO corrections and to higher Gegenbauer moments of the dimeson LCDAs. This is the first study of non-leptonic three-body $B$ decays to NNLO in QCD.

The mechanism of CP violation remains one of the puzzles in particle physics. Key to understanding this phenomenon are nonleptonic $B$ decays, especially multibody decays which exhibit large CP asymmetries in various regions of phase space. A full QCD-based theoretical description of these decays is still missing, requiring the use of models to fit the data. In this paper, we suggest a model ansatz which reflects the underlying physics and the known mechanism of CP violation via the CKM matrix. In addition, since CP violation is driven by the interference between amplitudes with and without valence charm quarks, we argue that the opening of the open-charm threshold may play an important role in generating CP violation in the high invariant mass region. We present a natural extension of the isobar model to incorporate these effects. We suggest an analysis of nonleptonic three-body $B$ decay data including this extension, which would be interesting as it may give new hints to the sources of CP violation both at low and high invariant mass.

Rare inclusive $B$ decays such as $\bar{B}\to X_{s(d)} \ell^+\ell^-$ are interesting probes for physics beyond the Standard Model. Due to the complementarity to their exclusive counterparts, they might shed light on the anomalies currently seen in exclusive $b \to s$ transitions. Distinguishing new-physics effects from the Standard Model requires precise predictions and necessitates the control of long distance effects. In the present work we revisit and improve the description of various long distance effects in inclusive decays such as charmonium and light-quark resonances, nonfactorisable power corrections, and cascade decays. We then apply these results to a state-of-the-art phenomenological study of $\bar{B}\to X_d \ell^+\ell^-$, including also logarithmically enhanced QED corrections and the recently calculated five-body contributions. To fully exploit the new-physics potential of inclusive flavour-changing neutral current decays, the $\bar{B}\to X_d \ell^+\ell^-$ observables should be measured in a dedicated Belle II analysis.

The determination of $V_{cb}$ relies on the Heavy-Quark Expansion and the extraction of the non-perturbative matrix elements from inclusive $b\to c$ decays. The proliferation of these matrix elements complicates their extraction at $1/m_b^4$ and higher, thereby limiting the $V_{cb}$ extraction. Reparametrization invariance links different operators in the Heavy-Quark expansion thus reducing the number of independent operators at $1/m_b^4$ to eight for the total rate. We show that this reduction also holds for spectral moments as long as they are defined by reparametrization invariant weight-functions. This is valid in particular for the leptonic invariant mass spectrum ($q^2$), i.e. the differential rate and its moments. Currently, $V_{cb}$ is determined by fitting the energy and hadronic mass moments, which do not manifest this parameter reduction and depend on the full set of 13 matrix elements up to $1/m_b^4$. In light of this, we propose an experimental analysis of the $q^2$ moments to open the possibility of a model-independent $V_{cb}$ extraction from semileptonic decays including the $1/m_b^4$ terms in a fully data-driven way.

Over the last two decades, $B \to πK$ modes have received a lot of attention. They are particularly interesting since the main contribution to these decays comes from QCD penguin topologies. Furthermore, electroweak penguin amplitudes enter at a level comparable to the tree topologies. In the past, a discrepancy was found in the correlation between the CP asymmetries of $B_d^0 \to π^0 K_{\rm S}$. We provide the state-of-the-art picture of this situation and consider new constraints, finding that the effect has become larger. An attractive explanation is offered by a modified electroweak penguin sector. We propose a new method to determine the relevant parameters. It employs an isospin relation between the amplitudes of the $B \to πK$ decays, and makes only minimal use of the $SU(3)$ flavour symmetry. Using current data as well as future scenarios, we demonstrate how the mixing-induced CP asymmetry of $B_d^0 \to π^0 K_{\rm S}$ plays a key role in this analysis. The application of our strategy at the next generation of $B$-physics experiments may establish New Physics and reveal new sources of CP violation in the electroweak penguin sector.

While some of the needed non-perturbative objects can be directly extracted from data, some others can, so far, only be modelled. Although this approach is currently model dependent, we comment on the perspectives to reduce this model dependence. While our model naturally accommodates the gross features of the Dalitz distribution, it cannot quantitatively explain the details seen in the current experimental data on local CP asymmetries. We comment on possible refinements of our simple model and conclude by briefly discussing a possible extension of the model to large invariant masses, where large local CP asymmetries have been measured.

Particularly interesting are $B^0_s\to K^-K^+$ and $B^0_d\toπ^-π^+$ decays, which are related by the $U$-spin symmetry of strong interactions, and allow for the extraction of CP-violating phases and tests of the Standard Model. The theoretical precision is limited by $U$-spin-breaking corrections and innovative methods are needed in view of the impressive future experimental precision expected in the era of Belle II and the LHCb upgrade. We have recently proposed a novel method to determine the $B_s^0$-$\bar{B}_s^0$ mixing phase $φ_s$ from the $B_s^0\to K^-K^+$, $B_d^0\to π^-π^+$ system, where semileptonic $B^0_s\to K^-\ell^+ν_\ell$, $B^0_d\to π^-\ell^+ν_\ell$ decays are a new ingredient and the theoretical situation is very favourable. We discuss this strategy in detail, with a focus on penguin contributions as well as exchange and penguin-annihilation topologies which can be probed by a variety of non-leptonic $B$ decays into charmless final states. We show that a theoretical precision as high as ${\cal O}(0.5^\circ)$ for $φ_s$ can be attained in the future, thereby offering unprecedented prospects for the search for new sources of CP violation.

Since $B^0_s\to K^-K^+$ is dominated by penguin topologies, new sources of CP violation may be revealed.

Abstract:
CP violation in $B^0_s$-$\bar B^0_s$ oscillations is expected at the $10^{-5}$ level in the Standard Model but could be enhanced by New Physics. Using $B^0_s\to D_s^-\ell^+ν_\ell$ decays, LHCb has recently reported the new result $(0.39\pm0.33)\times10^{-2}$ of the corresponding observable $a^s_{\rm sl}$. We point out that other current $B$ decay data imply…

We point out that other current $B$ decay data imply $a^s_{\rm sl} = (0.004 \pm 0.075)\times10^{-2}$. In view of this strong constraint, we propose to use $B^0_s\to D_s^-\ell^+ν_\ell$ and similar flavor-specific decays as a new tool to determine both the production asymmetry between $B^0_s$ and $\bar B^0_s$ mesons, and the CP asymmetry in the subsequent $D^\pm_s$ decays. The former serves as input for analyses of CP violation in $B^0_s$ channels, with significant room for improvement, while the latter offers an exciting laboratory for New Physics.

Modern experiments on neutron and allowed nuclear $β$ decay search for new semileptonic interactions, beyond the ``left-handed'' electroweak force. We show that ongoing and planned $β$-decay experiments, with isotopes at rest and in flight, can be exploited as sensitive tests of Lorentz invariance. The variety of correlations that involve the nuclear spin, the direction of the emitted $β$ particle, and the recoil direction of the daughter nucleus allow for relatively simple experiments that give direct bounds on Lorentz violation. The pertinent observables are decay-rate asymmetries and their dependence on sidereal time. We discuss the potential of several asymmetries that together cover a large part of the parameter space for Lorentz violation in the gauge sector. High counting statistics is required.

The role of $β$ decay as a low-energy probe of physics beyond the Standard Model is reviewed. Traditional searches for deviations from the Standard Model structure of the weak interaction in $β$ decay are discussed in the light of constraints from the LHC and the neutrino mass. Limits on the violation of time-reversal symmetry in $β$ decay are compared to the strong constraints from electric dipole moments. Novel searches for Lorentz symmetry breaking in the weak interaction in $β$ decay are also included, where we discuss the unique sensitivity of $β$ decay to test Lorentz invariance. We end with a roadmap for future $β$-decay experiments.
