The Spin Physics Detector collaboration proposes to install a universal detector in the second interaction point of the NICA collider under construction (JINR, Dubna) to study the spin structure of the proton and deuteron and other spin-related phenomena using a unique possibility to operate with polarized proton and deuteron beams at a collision energy up to 27 GeV and a luminosity up to $10^{32}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. As the main goal, the experiment aims to provide access to the gluon TMD PDFs in the proton and deuteron, as well as the gluon transversity distribution and tensor PDFs in the deuteron, via the measurement of specific single and double spin asymmetries using different complementary probes such as charmonia, open charm, and prompt photon production processes. Other polarized and unpolarized physics is possible, especially at the first stage of NICA operation with reduced luminosity and collision energy of the proton and ion beams. This document is dedicated exclusively to technical issues of the SPD setup construction.

Taking into account the recent parameterizations of parton distribution functions (PDFs), % obtained in the recent time, the momentum transfer dependence of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of nucleons is obtained in the limit $ξ\rightarrow 0$. The gravitational quark and gluon form factors of nucleons are calculated. It is shown that the gluon gravitational radius of the nucleon is comparable to the electromagnetic radius of the proton. The power dependence of form factors is investigated. As a result, it was obtained that the quark gravitational form factor is reproduced by the dipole form, while the form of the gluon gravitation form factor corresponds to the triple form.

In extensions of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics a light scalar from a hidden sector can interact with known particles via mixing with the SM Higgs boson. If the scalar mass is of GeV scale, this coupling induces the scalar decay into light hadrons, that saturates the scalar width. Searches for the light scalars are performed in many ongoing experiments and planned for the next generation projects. Applying dispersion relations changes the leading order estimate of the scalar decay rate into pions by a factor of about a hundred indicating the strong final state interaction. This subtlety for about thirty years prevented any reliable inference of the model parameters from experimental data. In this letter we use the gravitational form factor for neutral pion extracted from analysis of $γ^*γ\toπ^0π^0$ processes to estimate the quark contribution to scalar decay into two pions. We find a factor of two uncertainty in this estimate and argue that the possible gluon contribution is of the same order. The decay rate to pions smoothly matches that to gluons dominating for heavier scalars. With this finding we refine sensitivities of future projects to the scalar-Higgs mixing. The accuracy in the calculations can be further improved by performing similar analysis of $γ^*γ\to K K$ and $γ^*γ\toηη$ processes and possibly decays like $J/ψ\toγ+ππ$.

We present a comparison of data of lepton angular distributions of Drell-Yan/$Z$ production with the fixed-order pQCD calculations by which the baseline of pQCD effects is illustrated. As for the $Z$ production, we predict that $A_0$ and $A_2$ for $Z$ plus single gluon-jet events are very different from that of $Z$ plus single quark-jet events, allowing a new experimental tool for checking various algorithms which attempt to discriminate quark jets from gluon jets. Using an intuitive geometric approach, we show that the violation of the Lam-Tung relation, appearing at large transverse-momentum region, is attributed to the presence of a non-coplanarity effect. This interpretation is consistent with the appearance of violation beyond LO-QCD effect.

Prospects for quarkonium-production studies accessible during the upcoming high-luminosity phases of the CERN Large Hadron Collider operation after 2021 are reviewed. Current experimental and theoretical open issues in the field are assessed together with the potential for future studies in quarkonium-related physics. This will be possible through the exploitation of the huge data samples to be collected in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, both in the collider and fixed-target modes. Such investigations include, among others, those of: (i) J/psi and Upsilon produced in association with other hard particles; (ii) chi(c,b) and eta(c,b) down to small transverse momenta; (iii) the constraints brought in by quarkonia on gluon PDFs, nuclear PDFs, TMDs, GPDs and GTMDs, as well as on the low-x parton dynamics; (iv) the gluon Sivers effect in polarised-nucleon collisions; (v) the properties of the quark-gluon plasma produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions and of collective partonic effects in general; and (vi) double and triple parton scatterings.

The physics program of the experiment is based on collisions of longitudinally and transversely polarized protons and deuterons at $\sqrt{s}$ up to 27 GeV and luminosity up to 10$^{32}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. The SPD will operate as a universal facility for comprehensive study of unpolarized and polarized gluon content of the nucleon, using different complementary probes such as: charmonia, open charm, and prompt photon production processes. The aim of this work is to make a thorough review of the physics objectives that can potentially be addressed at the SPD, underlining related theoretical aspects and discussing relevant experimental results when available. Among different pertinent phenomena particular attention is drawn to the study of the gluon helicity, gluon Sivers and Boer-Mulders functions in the nucleon, as well as the gluon transversity distribution in the deuteron, via the measurement of specific single and double spin asymmetries.

A recent study showed that many features of the measured angular distribution coefficients, including the transverse momentum ($q_T$) and rapidity dependencies and the violation of the Lam-Tung relation, can be well described using an intuitive geometric approach. In this paper, we extend this geometric approach to describe the angular distribution coefficients for $W$ boson produced in $\bar{p} p$ collisions at the Tevatron. We first compare the data with a perturbative QCD calculation at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$. We then show that the data and QCD calculations can be well described with the geometric approach. Implications for future studies at the LHC energy are also discussed.

Generalized parton distributions (GPDs) are 3-dimensional (3D) structure functions for hadrons, and they are important for solving the proton spin puzzle including partonic orbital-angular-momentum contributions. The $s$-$t$ crossed quantities of the GPDs are generalized distribution amplitudes (GDAs). Here, $s$ and $t$ are Mandelstam variables. The GDAs can be studied in two-photon processes ($γ^* γ\to h \bar h$) at KEKB. A GDA describes the amplitude from quark and antiquark to the hadron pair $h \bar h$. In 2016, the Belle collaboration reported measurements for pion-pair production in electron-positron collision, and the pion GDAs were determined in this work by analyzing the Belle data. In our analysis, the pion GDAs are expressed by a few parameters, which are determined by analyzing the Belle data. From the obtained GDAs, form factors of energy-momentum tenor, so called gravitational form factors, are calculated for pion in the timelike region. The spacelike gravitational form factors are calculated from the timelike ones by using the dispersion relation. Then, the mass radius is calculated as 0.32-0.39 fm and the mechanical radius, defined by the slope of the form factor $Θ_1$, is calculated as 0.82-0.88 fm for the pion by using the spacelike form factors. This is the first study on gravitational form factors and radii of hadrons from actual experimental measurements. In 2019, the Belle II collaboration will start collecting data by the higher luminosity Super KEKB, so that the GDAs of other hadrons should also be investigated in the near future. Our studies are valuable in understanding 3D structure and gravitational properties of hadrons.

The transverse momentum ($q_T$) distributions of $λ$ and $ν$ show a clear dependence on the dimuon mass ($Q$) while those of $μ$ have a strong rapidity ($x_F$) dependence. Furthermore, $λ$ and $ν$ are found to scale with $q_T/Q$. These salient features could be qualitatively understood by a geometric approach where the lepton angular distribution parameters are expressed in terms of the polar and azimuthal angles of the "natural axis" in the dilepton rest frame.

We determined the pion GDAs by analyzing Belle data on the differential cross section for the two-photon process $γ^* γ\to π^0 π^0$. From the determined GDAs, we calculated timelike gravitational form factors of the pion and they were converted to the spacelike form factors by using the dispersion relation. These gravitational form factors $Θ_1$ and $Θ_2$ indicate mechanical (pressure, shear force) and gravitational-mass (or energy) distributions, respectively. Then, gravitational radii are calculated for the pion from the form factors, and they are compared with the pion charge radius. We explain that the new field of gravitational physics can be developed in the microscopic level of quarks and gluons.

Three-dimensional tomography of hadrons can be investigated by generalized parton distributions (GPDs), transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions (TMDs), and generalized distribution amplitudes (GDAs). The GDA studies had been only theoretical for a long time because there was no experimental measurement until recently, whereas the GPDs and TMDs have been investigated extensively by deeply virtual Compton scattering and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. Here, we report our studies to determine pion GDAs from recent KEKB measurements on the differential cross section of $γ^* γ\to π^0 π^0$. Since an exotic-hadron pair can be produced in the final state, the GDAs can be used also for probing internal structure of exotic hadron candidates in future. The other important feature of the GDAs is that the GDAs contain information on form factors of the energy-momentum tensor for quarks and gluons, so that gravitational form factors and radii can be calculated from the determined GDAs. We show the mass (energy) and the mechanical (pressure, shear force) form factors and radii for the pion. Our analysis should be the first attempt for obtaining gravitational form factors and radii of hadrons by analysis of actual experimental measurements. We believe that a new field of gravitational physics is created from the microscopic level in terms of elementary quarks and gluons.

The GDA studies provide information on three-dimensional tomography of hadrons. The GDAs can be investigated by the two-photon process $γ^* γ\to h\bar h$, and the GPDs are studied by the deeply virtual Compton scattering $γ^* h \to γh$. The GDA studies had been pure theoretical topics, although the GPDs have been experimentally investigated, because there was no available experimental measurement. Recently, the Belle collaboration reported their measurements on the $γ^* γ\to π^0 π^0$ differential cross section, so that it became possible to find the GDAs from their measurements. Here, we report our analysis of the Belle data for determining the pion GDAs. From the GDAs, the timelike gravitational form factors $Θ_1 (s)$ and $Θ_2 (s)$ can be calculated, which are mechanical (pressure, shear force) and mass (energy) form factors, respectively. They are converted to the spacelike form factors by using the dispersion relation, and then gravitational radii are evaluated for the pion. The mass and mechanical radii are obtained from $Θ_2$ and $Θ_1$ as $\sqrt {\langle r^2 \rangle_{\text{mass}}} =0.56 \sim 0.69$ fm and $\sqrt {\langle r^2 \rangle_{\text{mech}}} =1.45 \sim 1.56$ fm, whereas the experimental charge radius is $\sqrt {\langle r^2 \rangle_{\text{charge}}} =0.672 \pm 0.008$ fm for the charged pion. Future developments are expected in this new field to explore gravitational physics in the quark and gluon level.

Hadron tomography can be investigated by three-dimensional structure functions such as generalized parton distributions (GPDs), transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions, and generalized distribution amplitudes (GDAs). Here, we extract the GDAs, which are $s$-$t$ crossed quantities of the GPDs, from cross-section measurements of hadron-pair production process $γ^* γ\rightarrow π^0 π^0$ at KEKB. This work is the first attempt to obtain the GDAs from the actual experimental data. The GDAs are expressed by a number of parameters and they are determined from the data of $γ^* γ\rightarrow π^0 π^0$ by including intermediate scalar- and tensor-meson contributions to the cross section. Our results indicate that the dependence of parton-momentum fraction $z$ in the GDAs is close to the asymptotic one. The timelike gravitational form factors $Θ_1$ and $Θ_2$ are obtained from our GDAs, and they are converted to the spacelike ones by the dispersion relation. From the spacelike $Θ_1$ and $Θ_2$, gravitational densities of the pion are calculated. Then, we obtained the mass (energy) radius and the mechanical (pressure and shear force) radius from $Θ_2$ and $Θ_1$, respectively. They are calculated as $\sqrt {\langle r^2 \rangle _{\text{mass}}} =0.32 \sim 0.39$ fm, whereas the mechanical radius is larger $\sqrt {\langle r^2 \rangle _{\text{mech}}} =0.82 \sim 0.88$ fm. Significant $y$ dependencies were also found for the coefficients $A_1$, $A_3$ and $A_4$, while $A_0$ and $A_2$ exhibit very weak rapidity dependence. Using an intuitive geometric picture we show that the $q_T$ and $y$ dependencies of the angular distributions coefficients can be well described.

High precision data of dilepton angular distributions in $γ^*/Z$ production were reported recently by the CMS Collaboration covering a broad range of the dilepton transverse momentum, $q_T$, up to $\sim 300$ GeV. Pronounced $q_T$ dependencies of the $λ$ and $ν$ parameters, characterizing the $\cos^2θ$ and $\cos 2φ$ angular distributions, were found. Violation of the Lam-Tung relation was also clearly observed. We show that the $q_T$ dependence of $λ$ allows a determination of the relative contributions of the $q \bar q$ annihilation versus the $qG$ Compton process. The violation of the Lam-Tung relation is attributed to the presence of a non-zero component of the $q - \bar q$ axis in the direction normal to the "hadron plane" formed by the colliding hadrons. The magnitude of the violation of the Lam-Tung relation is shown to reflect the amount of this `non-coplanarity". The observed $q_T$ dependencies of $λ$ and $ν$ from the CMS and the earlier CDF data can be well described using this approach.

The measurements of asymmetries in production of J/Ψand direct photons will be performed as well simultaneously with DY using dedicated triggers. The set of these measurements will supply complete information for tests of the quark-parton model of nucleons at the QCD twist-two level with minimal systematic errors.

Abstract:
The dispersive representation of axial anomaly leads to the anomaly sum rules (ASRs), exact nonperturbative relations in QCD. The analytical continuation of the ASRs to the time-like region is performed. The transition form factors of $π^0$, $η$ and $η'$ mesons in this region are calculated. A good agreement with the available experimental data is found. Based on the ASRs, we have provided the fou…

We present a brief overview of the most relevant current issues related to quarkonium production in high energy proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions along with some perspectives. After reviewing recent experimental and theoretical results on quarkonium production in pp and pA collisions, we discuss the emerging field of polarisation studies. Thereafter, we report on issues related to heavy-quark production, both in pp and pA collisions, complemented by AA collisions. To put the work in a broader perspective, we emphasize the need for new observables to investigate quarkonium production mechanisms and reiterate the qualities that make quarkonia a unique tool for many investigations in particle and nuclear physics.

Abstract:
It is known how to access information on quark orbital angular momentum from generalized parton distribution functions, in a certain specified framework. It is intuitively expected, that such information can be accessed also through transverse momentum dependent distribution functions, but not known how. Now quark models provide promising hints. Recent results are reviewed.

The method, based on the ideas of Random Matrix Theory, is applied to detect systematic errors that occur at measurements of momentum distributions of emitted particles. The unfolded momentum distribution is well described by the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrices, when the uncertainty in the momentum distribution is maximal. The method is free from unwanted background contributions.

We study Pomeron-Odderon interference effects giving rise to charge and single-spin asymmetries in diffractive electroproduction of a pi+ pi- pair. We calculate these asymmetries originating from both longitudinal and transverse polarizations of the virtual photon in the framework of QCD and in the Born approximation, in a kinematical domain accessible to HERA experiments. We predict a sizable charge asymmetry with a characteristic dependence on the invariant mass of the pi+ pi- pair, which makes this observable very important for establishing the magnitude of the Odderon exchange in hard processes. The single spin asymmetry turns out to be rather small. We briefly discuss future improvements of our calculations and their possible effects on the results.
