Abstract:
We determine the nuclear suppression factor $S_{Pb}(x)$, where $x=M_{J/ψ}^2/W_{γp}^2$ with $M_{J/ψ}$ the $J/ψ$ mass and $W_{γp}$ the photon-nucleon energy, for the cross section of coherent $J/ψ$ photoproduction in heavy-ion ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) by performing the $χ^2$ fit to all available data on the cross…

We determine the nuclear suppression factor $S_{Pb}(x)$, where $x=M_{J/ψ}^2/W_{γp}^2$ with $M_{J/ψ}$ the $J/ψ$ mass and $W_{γp}$ the photon-nucleon energy, for the cross section of coherent $J/ψ$ photoproduction in heavy-ion ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) by performing the $χ^2$ fit to all available data on the cross section $dσ^{AA \to J/ψAA}/dy$ as a function of the $J/ψ$ rapidity $y$ and the photoproduction cross section $σ^{γA \to J/ψA}(W_{γp})$ as a function of $W_{γp}$. We find that while the $dσ^{AA \to J/ψAA}/dy$ data alone constrain $S_{Pb}(x)$ for $x \geq 10^{-3}$, the combined $dσ^{AA \to J/ψAA}/dy$ and $σ^{γA \to J/ψA}(W_{γp})$ data allow us to determine $S_{Pb}(x)$ in the wide interval $10^{-5} < x < 0.05$. In particular, the data favor $S_{Pb}(x)$, which decreases with a decrease of $x$ in the $10^{-4} < x < 0.01$ interval, and can be both decreasing or constant for $x< 10^{-4}$. Identifying $S_{Pb}(x)$ with the ratio of the gluon distributions in Pb and the proton $R_g(x,Q_0^2)=g_A(x,Q_0^2)/[A g_p(x,Q_0^2)]$, we demonstrate that the leading twist approximation (LTA) for nuclear shadowing provides a good description of all the data on $dσ^{AA \to J/ψAA}/dy$ and $σ^{γA \to J/ψA}(W_{γp})$ as well as on the experimental values for $S_{Pb}(x)$ derived from $σ^{γA \to J/ψA}(W_{γp})$. We also show that modern nuclear PDFs reasonably reproduce $S_{Pb}(x)$ as well.

Using the leading twist approach (LTA) to nuclear shadowing, we calculate the ratios of diffractive and usual parton distributions for a heavy nucleus (Pb) and the proton, $R_{A/p}=(f_{i/A}^{D(3)}/f_{i/A})/(f_{i/p}^{D(3)}/f_{i/p})$, for coherent and summed (coherent plus quasi-elastic) nuclear deep-inelastic scattering. We find that $R_{A/p} \approx 0.5-1$ for quarks and $R_{A/p} \approx 0.5-1.3$ for gluons in a broad range of $x$, which reaffirms the difference from the nuclear enhancement of $R_{A/p}$ predicted in the gluon saturation framework. We demonstrate that the magnitude of $R_{A/p}$ is controlled by the cross section of the interaction of hadronic fluctuations of the virtual photon with target nucleons, which explains an enhancement of $R_{A/p}$ in the color dipole model and its suppression in LTA. We argue that the black disk limit of LTA corresponds to $R_{A/p}=1$ and $R^{\rm coh}_{A/p}=0.86$ for the summed and coherent scattering, respectively. Relying on an intuitive definition of the saturation scale, we show that the ratio of the saturation scales of a heavy nucleus and proton $Q_{sA}^2(b)/Q_{sp}^2(b) \approx 1$ at small impact parameters $b$ due to the strong leading twist nuclear shadowing and diluteness of the nuclear density.

We argue that measurements of forward neutrons from nuclear breakup in inclusive high energy photon-nucleus ($γA$) scattering provide a novel way to study small-$x$ dynamics of QCD in heavy-ion ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs). Using models for hadronic fluctuations of the real photon and neutron emission in nuclear fragmentation, we calculate the distribution over the number of evaporation neutrons produced in $γPb$ collisions at the LHC. We show that it is correlated with the number of wounded nucleons (inelastic collisions) and, hence, can constrain the mechanism of nuclear shadowing and its $x$ dependence.

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. In summary, this document provides an exciting rationale for the energy upgrade of CEBAF to 22 GeV, outlining the transformative scientific potential that lies within reach, and the remarkable opportunities it offers for advancing our understanding of hadron physics and related fundamental phenomena.

We present predictions for the cross sections of the coherent and incoherent $J/ψ$ photoproduction in ultra-peripheral collisions at RHIC and at the LHC calculated for different classes of events depending on the presence of neutrons emitted by colliding nuclei. Since strong nucleus-nucleus interactions in UPCs are suppressed, it is usually assumed that neutrons at forward rapidities originate mainly from the electromagnetic dissociation of colliding nuclei caused by additional photon exchanges. This is a reasonable assumption for the coherent photoproduction where the state of the target nucleus remains intact. We consider additional sources of neutrons in the incoherent quasielastic and nucleon dissociative $J/ψ$ photoproduction and show that these processes significantly change probabilities of neutron emission compared to calculations when only neutrons from electromagnetic dissociation of nuclei are considered. Such studies should allow one to explore the dynamics of nuclear shadowing in the incoherent $J/ψ$ photoproduction down to $x \sim 10^{-5}$.

We argue that the Drell-Yan process in the $x_A \ge 0.15$ kinematics recently studied at FNAL by the E906/SeaQuest experiment may allow to observe an analogous of the EMC effect for antiquarks. The effects of Fermi motion and energy loss are considered. The preliminary E906/SeaQuest data are inconsistent with the growth of the $σ_A/Aσ_N$ ratio expected in the Fermi motion scenario at $x_A \ge 0.25$. The pattern of the $x_A$ dependence of the ratio seems also inconsistent with a scenario in which the dominant nuclear effect is a suppression of the cross section due to the energy loss experienced by a quark of the projectile proton involved in the Drell-Yan process. All together the data suggest the possibility of a modification of the antiquark parton distributions in nuclei, with a pattern similar to the one observed in the EMC effect. We argue that optimal kinematics to look for an antiquark EMC-like effect would be to measure the $σ_A^{DY}/Aσ_N^{DY}$ ratios for $x_A$ = 0.2-0.4 and $x_p$ $\approx$ constant.

This report was prepared on behalf of three Energy Frontier Topical Groups of the Snowmass 2021 Community Planning Exercise. It summarizes the status and implications of studies of strong interactions in high-energy experiments and QCD theory. We emphasize the rich landscape and broad impact of these studies in the decade ahead. Hadronic interactions play a central role in the high-luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) physics program, and strong synergies exist between the (HL-)LHC and planned or proposed experiments at the U.S. Electron-Ion Collider, CERN forward physics experiments, high-intensity facilities, and future TeV-range lepton and hadron colliders. Prospects for precision determinations of the strong coupling and a variety of nonperturbative distribution and fragmentation functions are examined. We also review the potential of envisioned tests of new dynamical regimes of QCD in high-energy and high-density scattering processes with nucleon, ion, and photon initial states. The important role of the high-energy heavy-ion program in studies of nuclear structure and the nuclear medium, and its connections with QCD involving nucleons are summarized. We address ongoing and future theoretical advancements in multi-loop QCD computations, lattice QCD, jet substructure, and event generators. Cross-cutting connections between experimental measurements, theoretical predictions, large-scale data analysis, and high-performance computing are emphasized.

While the phenomenon of gluon nuclear shadowing at small $x$ has been getting confirmation in QCD analyses of various LHC measurements involving heavy nuclei, it has not been possible so far to establish experimentally the number of target nucleons responsible for nuclear shadowing in a given process. To address this issue, we study coherent $J / ψ$ electroproduction on $^4$He and $^3$He in the kinematics of a future electron-ion collider and show that this process has the power to disentangle the contributions of the interaction with a specific number of nucleons $k$, in particular, with two nucleons at the momentum transfer $t \neq 0$. We predict a dramatic shift of the $t$-dependence of the differential cross section toward smaller values of $|t|$ due to a non-trivial correlation between $x$ and $k$. This calculation, which makes use for the first time of realistic wave functions, provides a stringent test of models of nuclear shadowing and a novel probe of the 3D imaging of gluons in light nuclei. In addition, thanks to this analysis, unique information on the real part of the corresponding scattering amplitude could be accessed.

This report describes the physics case, the resulting detector requirements, and the evolving detector concepts for the experimental program at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC will be a powerful new high-luminosity facility in the United States with the capability to collide high-energy electron beams with high-energy proton and ion beams, providing access to those regions in the nucleon and nuclei where their structure is dominated by gluons. Moreover, polarized beams in the EIC will give unprecedented access to the spatial and spin structure of the proton, neutron, and light ions. The studies leading to this document were commissioned and organized by the EIC User Group with the objective of advancing the state and detail of the physics program and develo** detector concepts that meet the emerging requirements in preparation for the realization of the EIC. The effort aims to provide the basis for further development of concepts for experimental equipment best suited for the science needs, including the importance of two complementary detectors and interaction regions.
This report consists of three volumes. Volume I is an executive summary of our findings and developed concepts. In Volume II we describe studies of a wide range of physics measurements and the emerging requirements on detector acceptance and performance. Volume III discusses general-purpose detector concepts and the underlying technologies to meet the physics requirements. These considerations will form the basis for a world-class experimental program that aims to increase our understanding of the fundamental structure of all visible matter

Abstract:
Ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs) involving heavy ions and protons are the energy frontier for photon-mediated interactions. UPC photons can be used for many purposes, including probing low-$x$ gluons via photoproduction of dijets and vector mesons, probes of beyond-standard-model processes, such as those enabled by light-by-light scattering, and studies of two-photon production of the Higgs.

The Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High Luminosity--Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron-proton and proton-proton operation. This report represents an update of the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) of the LHeC, published in 2012. It comprises new results on parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics in extending the accessible kinematic range in lepton-nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to enhanced luminosity, large energy and the cleanliness of the hadronic final states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, the report represents a detailed updated design of the energy recovery electron linac (ERL) including new lattice, magnet, superconducting radio frequency technology and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described and the lower energy, high current, 3-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution and calibration goals which arise from the Higgs and parton density function physics programmes. The paper also presents novel results on the Future Circular Collider in electron-hadron mode, FCC-eh, which utilises the same ERL technology to further extend the reach of DIS to even higher centre-of-mass energies.

The EMC effect in deuterium and helium-3 is studied using a convolution formalism that allows isolating the impact of high-momentum nucleons in short-ranged correlated (SRC) pairs. We assume that the modification of the structure function of bound nucleons is given by a universal (i.e. nucleus independent) function of their virtuality, and find that the effect of such modifications is dominated by nucleons in SRC pairs. This SRC-dominance of nucleon modifications is observed despite the fact that the bulk of the nuclear inelastic scattering cross-section comes from interacting with low-momentum nucleons. These findings are found to be robust to model details including nucleon modification function parametrization, free nucleon structure function and treatment of nucleon motion effects. While existing data cannot discriminate between such model details, we present predictions for measured, but not yet published, tritium EMC effect and tagged nucleon structure functions in deuterium that are sensitive to the neutron structure functions and bound nucleon modification functions.

We study sub-threshold heavy quarkonium ($J/ψ$ and $Υ$) photo-productions in $γA$ collisions as an independent test of the universality of the nucleon-nucleon short range correlation (SRC) in nuclear scattering processes. Just below the $γp$ threshold, the cross section is dominated by the mean field contribution of nucleons inside the nucleus. The SRC contributions start to dominate at lower photon energies, depending on the fraction of the SRC pairs in the target nucleus. We give an estimate of the cross sections in the sub-threshold region both for $J/ψ$ and $Υ$. This may be helpful for future measurements at JLab as well as at the Electron-Ion Collider in the U.S., and especially in China.

We consider exclusive two-pion production in antiproton-deuteron interactions at the beam momenta around 10 GeV/c in the kinematics with large momentum transfer in the underlying hard process $\bar p n \to π^- π^0$. The calculations are performed taking into account the antiproton and pion soft rescattering on the spectator proton in the framework of the generalized eikonal approximation. We focus on the color transparency effect that is modeled by introducing the dependence of rescattering amplitudes on the relative position of the struck and spectator nucleons along the momentum of a fast particle. As a consequence of the interplay between the impulse approximation and rescattering amplitudes the nuclear transparency ratio reveals a pretty complicated behaviour as a function of the transverse momentum of the spectator proton and the relative azimuthal angle between the $π^-$-meson and the proton. Color transparency significantly suppresses rescattering amplitudes which leads to substantial modifications of the nuclear transparency ratio moving it closer to the value obtained in the impulse approximation. By performing the Monte-Carlo analysis we determine that this effect can be studied at PANDA with a reasonable statistics.

Mechanisms of spin-flavor SU(6) symmetry breaking in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) are studied via an extraction of the free neutron structure function from a global analysis of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) data on the proton and on nuclei from $A = 2$ (deuterium) to 208 (lead). Modification of the structure function of nucleons bound in atomic nuclei (known as the EMC effect) are consistently accounted for within the framework of a universal modification of nucleons in short-range correlated (SRC) pairs. Our extracted neutron-to-proton structure function ratio $F_2^n/F_2^p$ becomes constant for $x_B \ge 0.6$, equalling $0.47 \pm 0.04$ as $x_B \rightarrow 1$, in agreement with theoretical predictions of perturbative QCD and the Dyson Schwinger equation, and in disagreement with predictions of the Scalar Diquark dominance model. We also predict $F_2^{^3\mathrm{He}}/F_2^{^3\mathrm{H}}$, recently measured, yet unpublished, by the MARATHON collaboration, the nuclear correction function that is needed to extract $F_2^n/F_2^p$ from $F_2^{^3\mathrm{He}}/F_2^{^3\mathrm{H}}$, and the theoretical uncertainty associated with this extraction.

On the basis of the generalized eikonal approximation we study the exclusive reactions $\bar p d \to J/ψ\, n$ and $\bar p d \to ψ^\prime\, n$ in vicinity of the thresholds for charmonium production on a free proton target. It is shown that the rescattering of the incoming antiproton and outgoing charmonium on the spectator neutron leads to a depletion of the charmonium production at low- and to an enhancement at high transverse momenta. This is in qualitative agreement with previous studies of hard proton knockout in proton-deuteron collisions. We analyze different physical sources of uncertainty which may influence the extraction of the total charmonium-neutron cross section. The color transparency effect for the incoming $\bar p$ largely compensates the influence of charmonium rescattering both at low and high transverse momenta. Different choices of the deuteron wave function lead to significant uncertainties at high transverse momenta. As an outcome of the calculations of charmonium production, we also provide predictions on the production of open charm hadrons due to the dissociation of the charmonium on the neutron. It is shown that the open charm production cross section is proportional to the total charmonium-nucleon cross section and quite stable with respect to the variation of other parameters of the model. We thus suggest that open charm channels are most suited for future studies of charmonium-nucleon interactions at PANDA with a deuteron target.

Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) experiments at the planned Electron-Ion Collider will be affected by details of the hadron formation inside the nuclear volume. Besides semi-inclusive particle production experiments decays of the target nucleus via emission of neutrons provide an additional opportunity to probe this domain. This paper reports on the hybrid dynamical+statistical calculations of low-energy neutron production in muon- and virtual photon-induced collisions with nuclei. We confirm the conclusion that the E665 data on neutron production in $μ^-$ + Pb DIS at 470 GeV indicate a strong suppression of the final state interaction for hadrons with momenta above $\sim 1$ GeV/c. Ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) can be used to test this suppression. The calculations of the neutron multiplicity distributions and $p_t$-spectra in photon - nucleus collisions at the energies accessible at the LHC and RHIC are presented for several models of hadron formation. We argue that studies of neutron production in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions open a new window on the small-$x$ dynamics and hadron component of the photon wave function.

The future opportunities for high-density QCD studies with ion and proton beams at the LHC are presented. Four major scientific goals are identified: the characterisation of the macroscopic long wavelength Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) properties with unprecedented precision, the investigation of the microscopic parton dynamics underlying QGP properties, the development of a unified picture of particle production and QCD dynamics from small (pp) to large (nucleus--nucleus) systems, the exploration of parton densities in nuclei in a broad ($x$, $Q^2$) kinematic range and the search for the possible onset of parton saturation. In order to address these scientific goals, high-luminosity Pb-Pb and p-Pb programmes are considered as priorities for Runs 3 and 4, complemented by high-multiplicity studies in pp collisions and a short run with oxygen ions. High-luminosity runs with intermediate-mass nuclei, for example Ar or Kr, are considered as an appealing case for extending the heavy-ion programme at the LHC beyond Run 4. The potential of the High-Energy LHC to probe QCD matter with newly-available observables, at twice larger center-of-mass energies than the LHC, is investigated.

We extend our Monte Carlo generator of global configurations in nuclei to include different spatial distributions of protons and neutrons in heavy nuclei taking into account the difference of spatial correlations between two protons, two neutrons and proton-neutron pairs. These configurations are used for building an event generator for proton-heavy nucleus collisions at the LHC for final states with a hard interaction in the channels where cross section for p-p and p-n scattering differ. Soft interactions are taken into account in the color fluctuation extension of the Glauber algorithm taking into account the inherently different transverse geometry of soft and hard p-N collisions. We use the new event generator to test an interesting observation of Physics Letters B745 (2015) 73-78, that the ratio of W$^+$/W$^-$ production rates in p-Pb collisions should significantly deviate from the inclusive value for peripheral collisions due to the presence of a neutron skin. We qualitatively confirm expectation of Physics Letters B745 (2015) 73-78, though for a realistic centrality trigger, we find the effect to be a factor of two smaller than the original estimate.

We take this into account within the light-cone (LC) wave function formalism and, indeed, found large differences between calculations based on the LC and non-relativistic (NR) wave functions. We demonstrate, that the consistent LC treatment of the $Δ-Δ$ system plays the key role in the separation of the signal and background. We present a detailed study of kinematical and dynamical conditions necessary for probing highly elusive three-nucleon short range correlations~(3N-SRCs) in nuclei through inclusive electron scattering. The kinematic requirements that should be satisfied in order to isolate 3N-SRCs in inclusive processes are derived. We demonstrate that a sequence of two short-range NN interactions represents the main mechanism for 3N-SRCs in inclusive processes. Within this mechanism we predict a quadratic dependence of the inclusive cross section ratios of nuclei to $^3$He in the 3N-SRC region to the same ratio measured in 2N-SRC domain. The extended analysis of the available data satisfying the necessary 3N-SRC kinematical conditions is presented. This analysis provides tantalizing signatures of scaling associated with the onset of 3N-SRC dominance. The same data are also consistent with the prediction of the quadratic relation between the ratios measured in the 3N and 2N-SRC regions for nuclei ranging $4 \le A \le 197$. This agreement made it possible to extract $a_3(A)$, the probability of 3N-SRCs relative to the A=3 nucleus. We find $a_3(A)$ to be significantly larger in magnitude than the analogous parameter, $a_2(A)$, for 2N-SRCs.

We test the hypothesis that configurations of a proton with a large-$x$ parton, $x_p \gtrsim 0.1$, have a smaller than average size. The QCD $Q^2$ evolution equations suggest that these small configurations also have a significantly smaller interaction strength, which has observable consequences in collisions with nuclei. We perform a global analysis of jet production data in proton- and deuteron-nucleus collisions at RHIC and the LHC. Using a model which takes a distribution of interaction strengths into account, we quantitatively extract the $x_p$-dependence of the average interaction strength, $σ(x_p)$, over a wide kinematic range. By comparing the RHIC and LHC results, our analysis finds that the interaction strength for small configurations, while suppressed, grows faster with collision energy than does that for average configurations. We check that this energy dependence is consistent with the results of a method which, given $σ(x_p)$ at one energy, can be used to quantitatively predict that at another. This finding further suggests that at even lower energies, nucleons with a large-$x_p$ parton should interact much more weakly than those in an average configuration, a phenomenon in line with explanations of the EMC effect for large-$x_p$ quarks in nuclei based on color screening.

We derive expressions for the cross section of the multiparton interactions based on the analysis of the relevant Feynman diagrams. We express the cross sections through the double (triple, ...) generalized parton distributions (GPDs). In the mean field approximation for the double GPDs the answer is expressed through the integral over two gluon form factor which was measured in the exclusive DIS vector meson production. We explain under what conditions the derived expressions correspond to an intuitive picture of hard interactions in the impact parameter representation. The mean field approximation in which correlations of the partons are neglected fail to explain the data, while pQCD induced correlation enhance large $p_\perp$ and $ 0.001 < x < 0.1$ typically enhance the cross section by a factor of 1.5 -- 2 explaining the current data. We argue that in the small x kinematics ($10^{-4} \le x \le 10^{-3}$) where effects of perturbative correlations diminish, the nonperturbative mechanism kicks in and generates positive correlations comparable in magnitude with the perturbative ones. We explain how our technique can be used for calculations of MPI in the proton - nucleus scattering. The interplay of hard interactions and underlying event is discussed, as well as different geometric pictures for each of MPI mechanisms-pQCD, nonperturbative correlations and mean field. Predictions for value of \effs for various processes and a wide range of kinematics are given. We show that together different MPI mechanisms give good description of experimental data, both at Tvatron, and LHC, including the central kinematics studied by ATLAS and CMS detectors, and forward (heavy flavors) kinematics studied by LHCb.

In hadronic collisions, interference between different production channels affects momentum distributions of multi-particle final states. As this QCD interference does not depend on the strong coupling constant, it is part of the no-interaction baseline that needs to be controlled prior to searching for other manifestations of collective dynamics. Here, we introduce a model that is based on the QCD theory of multi-parton interactions and that allows one to study interference effects in the production of $m$ particles in hadronic collisions with $N$ parton-parton interactions ("sources"). In an expansion in powers of $1/(N_c^2-1)$ and to leading order in the number of sources $N$, we calculate interference effects in the $m$-particle spectra and we determine from them the second and fourth order cumulant momentum anisotropies $v_n$. Without invoking any azimuthal asymmetry and any density dependent non-linear dynamics in the incoming state, and without invoking any interaction in the final state, we find that QCD interference alone can give rise to values for $v_n\lbrace 2\rbrace$ and $v_n\lbrace 4\rbrace$, $n$ even, that persist unattenuated for increasing number of sources, that may increase with increasing multiplicity and that agree with measurements in proton-proton (pp) collisions in terms of the order of magnitude of the signal and the approximate shape of the transverse momentum dependence. We further find that the non-abelian features of QCD interference can give rise to odd harmonic anisotropies. These findings indicate that the no-interaction baseline including QCD interference effects can make a sizeable if not dominant contribution to the measured $v_n$ coefficients in pp collisions. Prospects for analyzing QCD interference contributions further and their possible relevance for proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions are discussed shortly.

Using the framework that interpolates between the leading power limit of the Color Glass Condensate and the High Energy (or $k_{T}$) factorization we calculate the direct component of the forward dijet production in ultra-peripheral $\mathrm{Pb}$-$\mathrm{Pb}$ collisions at CM energy $5.1\,\mathrm{TeV}$ per nucleon pair. The formalism is applicable when the average transverse momentum of the dijet system $P_{T}$ is much bigger than the saturation scale $Q_{s}$, $P_{T}\gg Q_{s}$, while the imbalance of the dijet system can be arbitrary. The cross section is uniquely sensitive to the Weizsäcker-Williams (WW) unintegrated gluon distribution, which is far less known from experimental data than the most common dipole gluon distribution appearing in inclusive small-$x$ processes. We have calculated cross sections and nuclear modification ratios using WW gluon distribution obtained from the dipole gluon density through the Gaussian approximation. The dipole gluon distribution used to get WW was fitted to the inclusive HERA data with the nonlinear extension of unified BFKL+DGLAP evolution equation. The saturation effects are visible but rather weak for realistic $p_{T}$ cut on the dijet system, reaching about $20\%$ with the cut as low as $6\,\mathrm{GeV}$. We find that the LO collinear factorization with nuclear leading twist shadowing predicts quite similar effects.

By using the theoretical approaches describing well the available data on $t$-integrated coherent photoproduction of light and heavy vector mesons in Pb-Pb ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Run 1, we calculate the momentum transfer distributions for this process for $ρ$ and $J/ψ$ vector mesons in the kinematics of Run 2 at the LHC. We demonstrate that nuclear shadowing not only suppresses the absolute value of the cross sections, but also shifts the momentum transfer distributions toward smaller values of the momentum transfer $|t|$. This result can be interpreted as a broadening in the impact parameter space of the effective nucleon density in nuclei by 14\% in the case of $ρ$ and the nuclear gluon distribution by $5-11$\% in the case of $J/ψ$.

The report starts presenting a selection of the Monte Carlo simulation tools currently available, chapter 2, then enters the rich phenomenology of QCD at low, chapter 3, and high, chapter 4, momentum transfer, while the unique scattering conditions of central exclusive production are analyzed in chapter 5. The last two experimental topics, Cosmic Ray and Heavy Ion physics are presented in the chapter 6 and 7 respectively. Chapter 8 is dedicated to the BFKL dynamics, multiparton interactions, and saturation. The report ends with an overview of the forward detectors at LHC. Each chapter is correlated with a comprehensive bibliography, attempting to provide to the interested reader with a wide opportunity for further studies.

We describe the charm production rates and angle-momentum distributions at large x and discuss methods of charm reconstruction using next-generation detector capabilities (pi/K identification, vertex reconstruction). We calculate the rate of double open charm production in the forward kinematics studied recently in the LHCb experiment. We find that the mean field approximation for the double parton GPD (Generalized parton distributions), which neglects parton - parton correlations, underestimates the rate by a factor of two. The enhancement due to the perturbative QCD correlation \12 mechanism which explains the rate of double parton interactions at the central rapidities is found to explain 60 $÷$ 80 \% of the discrepancy. We argue that the nonperturbative fluctuations leading to non-factorized (correlated) contributions to the initial conditions for the DGLAP collinear evolution of the double parton GPD play an important role in this kinematics. Combined, the two correlation mechanisms provide a good description of the rate of double charm production reported by the LHCb. We also give predictions for the variation of the \effs (i.e. the ratio of double and square of single inclusive rates) in the discussed kinematics as a function of $p_t$. The account for two correlation mechanisms strongly reduces sensitivity of the results to the starting point of the QCD evolution.

Assuming that the transverse size of the pionic $q \bar q$ pair in the hard interaction point is similar to the one in the reaction $γ^* p\to π^+ n$ studied at JLab we predict large color transparency effects in the discussed kinematic range. We also suggest that the semiexclusive $ρ^0$ production in $π^-$-induced reactions in the same beam momentum region may provide new information on the dynamics of the interaction in the non-vacuum channel, while the $J/ψ$ production can be used to get information on $J/ψN$ total interaction cross section.,

We argue that with an increase of the collision energy, elastic photoproduction of $ρ$ mesons on nuclei becomes affected by the significant cross section of photon inelastic diffraction into large masses, which results in the sizable inelastic nuclear shadowing correction to $σ_{γA \to ρA}$ and the reduced effective $ρ$-nucleon cross section. We take these effects into account by combining the vector meson dominance model, which we upgrade to include the contribution of high-mass fluctuations of the photon according to QCD constraints, and the Gribov-Glauber approximation for nuclear shadowing, where the inelastic nuclear shadowing is included by means of cross section fluctuations. The resulting approach allows us to successfully describe the data on elastic $ρ$ photoproduction on nuclei in heavy ion UPCs in the $7 \ {\rm GeV} < W_{γp} < 46$ GeV energy range and to predict the value of the cross section of coherent $ρ$ photoproduction in Pb-Pb UPCs at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV in Run 2 at the LHC, $dσ_{Pb Pb \to ρPb Pb} (y=0)/dy= 560 \pm 25$ mb.

Multiple Partonic Interactions are often crucial for interpreting results obtained at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The quest for a sound understanding of the dynamics behind MPI - particularly at this time when the LHC is due to start its "Run II" operations - has focused the aim of this workshop. MPI@LHC2014 concentrated mainly on the phenomenology of LHC measurements whilst kee** in perspective those results obtained at previous hadron colliders. The workshop has also debated some of the state-of-the-art theoretical considerations and the modeling of MPI in Monte Carlo event generators. The topics debated in the workshop included: Phenomenology of MPI processes and multiparton distributions; Considerations for the description of MPI in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD); Measuring multiple partonic interactions; Experimental results on inelastic hadronic collisions: underlying event, minimum bias, forward energy flow; Monte Carlo generator development and tuning; Connections with low-x phenomena, diffraction, heavy-ion physics and cosmic rays. In a total of 57 plenary talks the workshop covered a wide range of experimental results, Monte Carlo development and tuning, phenomenology and dedicated measurements of MPI which were produced with data from the LHC's Run I. Recent progress of theoretical understanding of MPI in pp, pA and AA collisions as well as the role of MPI in diffraction and small-x physics were also covered. The workshop forstered close contact between the experimental and theoretical communities. It provided a setting to discuss many of the different aspects of MPI, eventually identifying them as a unifying concept between apparently different lines of research and evaluating their impact on the LHC physics programme.

We investigate dijet production from proton-nucleus collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) as a means for observing superfast quarks in nuclei with Bjorken $x>1$. Kinematically, superfast quarks can be identified through directly measurable jet kinematics. Dynamically, their description requires understanding several elusive properties of nuclear QCD, such as nuclear forces at very short distances, as well as medium modification of parton distributions in nuclei. In the present work, we develop a model for nuclear parton distributions at large $x$ in which the nuclear dynamics at short distance scales are described by two- and three-nucleon short range correlations (SRCs). Nuclear modifications are accounted for using the color screening model, and an improved description of the EMC effect is reached by using a structure function parametrization that includes higher-twist contributions. We apply QCD evolution at the leading order to obtain nuclear parton distributions in the kinematic regime of the LHC, and based on the obtained distributions calculate the cross section for dijet production. We find not only that superfast quarks can be observed at the LHC, but also that they provide sensitivity to the practically unexplored three-nucleon SRCs in nuclei. Additionally, the LHC can extend our knowledge of the EMC effect to large $Q^2$ where higher-twist effects are negligible.

We derive expressions for the differential distributions and the total cross section of double- parton interaction in direct photon interaction with proton and nuclei. We demonstrate that in this case the cross section is more directly related to the nucleon generalized parton distribution than in the case of double parton interactions in the proton - proton collisions. We focus on the production of two dijets each containing charm (anticharm) quarks and carrying $x_1,x_2>0.2$ fractions of the photon momentum. Numerical results are presented for the case of $γp$ collisions at LHeC, HERA and in the ultraperipheral $AA$ and $pA$ collisions at the LHC. We find that the events of this kind would be abundantly produced at the LHeC. For $\sqrt{s}=1.3$ TeV the expected rate is $2\cdot 10^8$ events for the luminosity $10^{34}$ cm$^{-2}s^{-1}$, the running time of $10^6$ s and the transverse cutoff of $p_t>5$ GeV. This would make it feasible to use these processes for the model independent determination of two parton GPDs in nucleon and in nuclei. For HERA the total accumulated number of the events is also high, but efficiency of the detection of charm seems too low to study the process. We also find that a significant number of such double parton interactions should be produced in $p - Pb$ and $Pb- Pb$ collisions at the LHC: $\sim 6\cdot 10^4$ for $Pb-Pb$, and $\sim 7 \cdot 10^3$ for $p-Pb$ collisions for the same transverse momentum cutoff.

We argue that the pattern of the deviation from the Glauber approximation prediction for the centrality dependence of the rate of forward jet production observed in pA collisions at the LHC provides the first experimental evidence that parton configurations in the projectile proton containing a parton with large $x$ interact with a nuclear target with a significantly smaller than average cross section and have smaller than average size. We implement the effects of fluctuations of the interaction strength and, using the ATLAS analysis of how hadron production at backward rapidities depends on the number of wounded nucleons, make quantitative predictions for the centrality dependence of the jet production rate as a function of the $x$-dependent interaction strength $σ(x)$.
We find that σ(x)\sim 0.6 ~σ_{tot}(pp) gives a good description of the x=0.6 data and may shed a light on the origin of the EMC effect.

The fluctuations of the strength of interaction expected in QCD and momentum conservation are taken into account also. We evaluate the number of wounded nucleons in soft and hard processes, the multiplicity of jets in the proton fragmentation region as a function of the variance of the distribution over the interaction strengths directly measured in forward diffractive $pN$ scattering for RHIC and LHC energies. We argue that these results could be used to test whether parton configurations containing a parton carrying the $x\ge 0.5$ fraction of the projectile momentum interact significantly weaker than on average. We also study leading twist shadowing and the EMC effect for superdense nuclear matter configurations probed in the events with larger than average number of wounded nucleons.
