Transforming a rare event search into a not-so-rare event search in real-time with deep learning-based object detection

Abstract: Deep learning-based object detection algorithms enable the simultaneous classification and localization of any number of objects in image data. Many of these algorithms are capable of operating in real-time on high resolution images, attributing to their widespread usage across many fields. We present an end-to-end object detection pipeline designed for real-time rare event searches for the Migdal effect, using high-resolution image data from a state-of-the-art scientific CMOS camera in the MIGDAL experiment. The Migdal effect in nuclear scattering, crucial for sub-GeV dark matter searches, has yet to be experimentally confirmed, making its detection a primary goal of the MIGDAL experiment. Our pipeline employs the YOLOv8 object detection algorithm and is trained on real data to enhance the detection efficiency of nuclear and electronic recoils, particularly those exhibiting overlap** tracks that are indicative of the Migdal effect. When deployed online on the MIGDAL readout PC, we demonstrate our pipeline to process and perform the rare event search on 2D image data faster than the peak 120 frame per second acquisition rate of the CMOS camera. Applying these same steps offline, we demonstrate that we can reduce a sample of 20 million camera frames to around 1000 frames while maintaining nearly all signal that YOLOv8 is able to detect, thereby transforming a rare search into a much more manageable search. Our studies highlight the potential of pipelines similar to ours significantly improving the detection capabilities of experiments requiring rapid and precise object identification in high-throughput data environments. △ Less

Search for a $τ^+τ^-$ resonance in $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-} τ^+τ^-$ events with the Belle II experiment

Abstract: We report the first search for a non-standard-model resonance decaying into $τ$ pairs in $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-} τ^+τ^-$ events in the 3.6-10 GeV/$c^{2}$ mass range. We use a 62.8 fb$^{-1}$ sample of $e^+e^-$ collisions collected at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider. We observe no evidence for a signal and set exclusion limits at 90% confidence level on the product of cross section and branching fraction into $τ$ pairs, ranging from 0.7 fb to 24 fb, and on the couplings of these processes. We obtain world-leading constraints on the couplings for the leptophilic scalar model for masses above 6.5 GeV/$c^2$ and for the axion-like particle model over the entire mass range. △ Less

We find the branching fractions to be: \[ \text{B}(B^-\to D^0K^-K_S^0)=(1.89\pm 0.16\pm 0.10)\times 10^{-4}, \] \[ \text{B}(\overline B{}^0\to D^+K^-K_S^0)=(0.85\pm 0.11\pm 0.05)\times 10^{-4},\] \[ \text{B}(B^-\to D^{*0}K^-K_S^0)=(1.57\pm 0.27\pm 0.12)\times 10^{-4}, \] \[ \text{B}(\overline B{}^0\to D^{*+}K^-K_S^0)=(0.96\pm 0.18\pm 0.06)\times 10^{-4},\] where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These results include the first observation of $\overline B{}^0\to D^+K^-K_S^0$, $B^-\to D^{*0}K^-K_S^0$, and $\overline B{}^0\to D^{*+}K^-K_S^0$ decays and a significant improvement in the precision of $\text{B}(B^-\to D^0K^-K_S^0)$ compared to previous measurements. △ Less

Abstract: The main task of the Top Tracker detector of the neutrino reactor experiment Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is to reconstruct and extrapolate atmospheric muon tracks down to the central detector. This muon tracker will help to evaluate the contribution of the cosmogenic background to the signal. The Top Tracker is located above JUNO's water Cherenkov Detector and Central Detector… ▽ More The main task of the Top Tracker detector of the neutrino reactor experiment Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is to reconstruct and extrapolate atmospheric muon tracks down to the central detector. This muon tracker will help to evaluate the contribution of the cosmogenic background to the signal. The Top Tracker is located above JUNO's water Cherenkov Detector and Central Detector, covering about 60% of the surface above them. The JUNO Top Tracker is constituted by the decommissioned OPERA experiment Target Tracker modules. The technology used consists in walls of two planes of plastic scintillator strips, one per transverse direction. Wavelength shifting fibres collect the light signal emitted by the scintillator strips and guide it to both ends where it is read by multianode photomultiplier tubes. Compared to the OPERA Target Tracker, the JUNO Top Tracker uses new electronics able to cope with the high rate produced by the high rock radioactivity compared to the one in Gran Sasso underground laboratory. In order to collect the planned data set within approximately one decade, the target is to reach a peak l… ▽ More The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider aims to collect an unprecedented data set of $50~{\rm ab}^{-1}$ to study $CP$-violation in the $B$-meson system and to search for Physics beyond the Standard Model. SuperKEKB is already the world's highest-luminosity collider. In order to collect the planned data set within approximately one decade, the target is to reach a peak luminosity of $\rm 6 \times 10^{35}~cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ by further increasing the beam currents and reducing the beam size at the interaction point by squeezing the betatron function down to $β^{*}_{\rm y}=\rm 0.3~mm$. To ensure detector longevity and maintain good reconstruction performance, beam backgrounds must remain well controlled. We report on current background rates in Belle II and compare these against simulation. We find that a number of recent refinements have significantly improved the background simulation accuracy. Finally, we estimate the safety margins going forward. We predict that backgrounds should remain high but acceptable until a luminosity of at least $\rm 2.8 \times 10^{35}~cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ is reached for $β^{*}_{\rm y}=\rm 0.6~mm$. At this point, the most vulnerable Belle II detectors, the Time-of-Propagation (TOP) particle identification system and the Central Drift Chamber (CDC), have predicted background hit rates from single-beam and luminosity backgrounds that add up to approximately half of the maximum acceptable rates. △ Less

Abstract: Using the entire data sample of $980\,\textrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy collider, we report the measurement of the mass, width, and the relative branching ratios of the $Λ_c(2625)^+$ charmed baryon. The mass difference between $Λ_c(2625)^+$ and $Λ_c^+$ is measured to be… ▽ More Using the entire data sample of $980\,\textrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy collider, we report the measurement of the mass, width, and the relative branching ratios of the $Λ_c(2625)^+$ charmed baryon. The mass difference between $Λ_c(2625)^+$ and $Λ_c^+$ is measured to be $M(Λ_c(2625)^{+}) - M(Λ_c^{+}) = 341.518 \pm 0.006 \pm 0.049\ \mathrm{MeV}/\mathit{c}^2$. The upper limit on the width is measured to be $Γ(Λ_c(2625)^+) < 0.52\,\mathrm{MeV}/\textit{c}^2$ at 90\% credibility level. Based on a full Dalitz plot fit, branching ratios with respect to the mode $Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Λ_c^+ π^+ π^-$ are measured to be $\frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Σ_c^{0} π^{+})} {\mathcal{B}(Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Λ_c^+ π^{+} π^{-})} = (5.19 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.40) \%$ and $\frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Σ_c^{++} π^{-})} {\mathcal{B}(Λ_c(2625)^+ \to Λ_c^+ π^{+} π^{-})} = (5.13 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.32) \%$. We search for an excess in the lepton-energy spectrum of the known $τ^-\to e^-\barν_e ν_τ$ and $τ^-\to μ^-\barν_μν_τ$ decays. We report 95\% confidence-level upper limits on the branching-fraction ratio ${\mathcal B}(τ^-\to e^- α) / {\mathcal B}(τ^- \to e^- \barν_e ν_τ)$ in the range $(1.1-9.7) \times 10^{-3}$ and on ${\mathcal B}(τ^-\to μ^- α) / {\mathcal B}(τ^- \to μ^- \barν_μν_τ)$ in the range $(0.7-12.2) \times 10^{-3}$ for $α$ masses between 0 and 1.6 GeV/c$^2$. These results provide the most stringent bounds on invisible boson production from $τ$ decays. △ Less

Abstract: The $L_μ-L_τ$ extension of the standard model predicts the existence of a lepton-flavor-universality-violating $Z^{\prime}$ boson that couples only to the heavier lepton families. We extract the partial decay rates as functions of $w$ and perform a fit to the decay form-factor and the CKM parameter $|V_{cb}|$ using the BGL parameterization of the form factor and lattice QCD input from the FNAL/MILC and HPQCD collaborations. We obtain $η_{EW}|V_{cb}|=(38.53\pm 1.15)\times 10^{-3}$, where $η_{EW}$ is an electroweak correction, and the error accounts for theoretical and experimental sources of uncertainty. △ Less

By fitting the measured partial branching fractions as functions of $q^{2}$, together with constraints on the nonperturbative hadronic contribution from lattice QCD calculations, the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{ub}$, $(3.55 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.17) \times 10^{-3}$, is extracted. Combining with the world average $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\to{}pK_S^0)$, we have the absolute branching fractions: $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\to{}pK_S^0K_S^0) = {(2.35\pm 0.12\pm 0.07 \pm 0.12 )\times 10^{-4}}$ and $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\to{}pK_S^0η) = {(4.35\pm 0.10\pm 0.20 \pm 0.22 )\times 10^{-3}}$. The first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, while the third ones arise from the uncertainty on $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\to{}pK_S^0)$. The mode $Λ_c^+\to{}pK_S^0K_S^0$ is observed for the first time and has a statistical significance of $>\!10σ$. The branching fraction of $Λ_c^+\to{}pK_S^0η$ has been measured with a threefold improvement in precision over previous results and is found to be consistent with the world average. △ Less

The ratio of branching fractions to the normalization mode $Ω_c^0\to Ω^-π^+$ is measured to be $${\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ξ^{-} π^{+} )/{\cal B}(Ω_c^0\to Ω^-π^+)=0.253\pm 0.053({\rm stat.})\pm 0.030({\rm syst.}).$$ No significant signals of $Ω^0_c\toΞ^-K^+$ and $Ω^-K^+$ modes are found. The upper limits at $90\%$ confidence level on ratios of branching fractions are determined to be $${\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ξ^{-} K ^{+})/{\cal B}(Ω_c^0\to Ω^-π^+) < 0.070$$ and $${\cal B}(Ω_{c}^{0} \to Ω^{-}K^{+})/{\cal B}(Ω_c^0\to Ω^-π^+) < 0.29.$$ △ Less

Abstract: We determine the branching fractions ${\mathcal{B}}$ and $CP$ asymmetries ${\mathcal{A}_{\it CP}}$ of the decays $B^+ \rightarrow π^+ π^0$ and $B^+ \rightarrow K^+ π^0$. The results are based on a data set containing 198 million bottom-antibottom meson pairs corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $190\;\text{fb}^{-1}$ recorded by the Belle II detector in energy-asymmetric electron-positron c… ▽ More We determine the branching fractions ${\mathcal{B}}$ and $CP$ asymmetries ${\mathcal{A}_{\it CP}}$ of the decays $B^+ \rightarrow π^+ π^0$ and $B^+ \rightarrow K^+ π^0$. We measure ${\mathcal{B}(B^+ \rightarrow π^+ π^0) = (6.12 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.53)\times 10^{-6}}$, ${\mathcal{B}(B^+ \rightarrow K^+ π^0) = (14.30 \pm 0.69 \pm 0.79)\times 10^{-6}}$, ${\mathcal{A}_{\it CP}(B^+ \rightarrow π^+ π^0) = -0.085 \pm 0.085 \pm 0.019}$, and ${\mathcal{A}_{\it CP}(B^+ \rightarrow K^+ π^0) = 0.014 \pm 0.047 \pm 0.010}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. Abstract: We study the processes $e^+e^-\toωχ_{bJ}(1P)$ ($J$ = 0, 1, or 2) using samples at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 10.701, 10.745, and 10.805 GeV, corresponding to 1.6, 9.8, and 4.7 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, respectively. By combining Belle II data with Belle results at $\sqrt{s}$ = 10.867 GeV, we find energy dependencies of the Born cross sections for $e^+e^-\to ωχ_{b1,b2}(1P)$ to be consistent with the shape of the $Υ(10753)$ state. These data indicate that the internal structures of the $Υ(10753)$ and $Υ(10860)$ states may differ. Including data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 10.653 GeV, we also search for the bottomonium equivalent of the $X(3872)$ state decaying into $ωΥ(1S)$. We also make the most precise measurement of the decay asymmetry parameters ($α$) for the four modes of interest and search for $C\!P$ violation via the $α$-induced $C\!P$ asymmetry ($A_{C\!P}^α$). We measure $A_{C\!P}^α(Λ_c^+\toΛK^+)\!=\!{-0.023\pm0.086\pm0.071}$ and $A_{C\!P}^α(Λ_c^+\toΣ^0K^+)\!=\!{+0.08\pm 0.35\pm 0.14}$, which are the first $A_{C\!P}^α$ results for SCS decays of charmed baryons. We search for $Λ$-hyperon $C\!P$ violation in $Λ_c^+\to(Λ,\,Σ^0)π^+$ and find $A_{C\!P}^α(Λ\to pπ^{-})\!=\!{+0.013\pm0.007\pm0.011}$. This is the first time that hyperon $C\!P$ violation has been measured via Cabibbo-favored charm decays. No evidence of baryon $C\!P$ violation is found. We also obtain the most precise branching fractions for two SCS $Λ_c^+$ decays, $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\toΛK^+)\!=\!(6.57\pm0.17\pm0.11\pm0.35)\times10^{-4}$ and $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\toΣ^0K^+)\!=\!(3.58\pm0.19\pm0.06\pm0.19)\times10^{-4}$. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic, while the third uncertainties come from the uncertainties on the world average branching fractions of $Λ_c^+\to(Λ,\,Σ^0)π^+$. △ Less

Abstract: We measure the ratio of branching fractions for the $Υ(4S)$ decays to $B^+B^-$ and $B^0\bar{B}{}^0$ using $B^+ \rightarrow J/ψ(\ell\ell) K^+$ and $B^0 \rightarrow J/ψ(\ell\ell) K^0$ samples, where $J/ψ(\ell\ell)$ stands for $J/ψ\to \ell^+\ell^-$ ($\ell = e$ or $μ$), with $711$ fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector. We find the decay rate ratio of… ▽ More We measure the ratio of branching fractions for the $Υ(4S)$ decays to $B^+B^-$ and $B^0\bar{B}{}^0$ using $B^+ \rightarrow J/ψ(\ell\ell) K^+$ and $B^0 \rightarrow J/ψ(\ell\ell) K^0$ samples, where $J/ψ(\ell\ell)$ stands for $J/ψ\to \ell^+\ell^-$ ($\ell = e$ or $μ$), with $711$ fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector. We find the decay rate ratio of $Υ(4S) \rightarrow B^+B^-$ over $Υ(4S) \rightarrow B^0\bar{B}{}^0$ to be $1.065\pm0.012\pm 0.019 \pm 0.047$, which is the most precise measurement to date. The first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, and the third uncertainty is systematic due to the assumption of isospin symmetry in $B \to J/ψ(\ell\ell) K$. △ Less

We search for the simultaneous production of $A^\prime$ and $h^\prime$ in the dark Higgsstrahlung process $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow A^\prime \, h^\prime$ with $A^\prime \rightarrow μ^+μ^-$ and $ h^\prime$ invisible in electron-positron collisions at a center-of-mass energy o… ▽ More The dark photon $A^\prime$ and the dark Higgs boson $h^\prime$ are hypothetical particles predicted in many dark sector models. We search for the simultaneous production of $A^\prime$ and $h^\prime$ in the dark Higgsstrahlung process $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow A^\prime \, h^\prime$ with $A^\prime \rightarrow μ^+μ^-$ and $ h^\prime$ invisible in electron-positron collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV collected by the Belle II experiment in 2019. With an integrated luminosity of 8.34 fb$^{-1}$, we observe no evidence for signal. We obtain exclusion limits at 90% Bayesian credibility in the range of 1.7--5.0 fb on the cross section and in the range of $1.7 \times10^{-8}$--$200 \times10^{-8}$ on the effective coupling $\varepsilon^2 \times α_D$ for the $A^\prime$ mass in the range of 4.0 GeV/$c^2$ $< M_{A^\prime}< 9.7$ GeV/$c^2$ and for the $h^\prime$ mass $M_{h^\prime} < M_{A^\prime}$, where $\varepsilon$ is the mixing strength between the standard model and the dark photon and $α_D$ is the coupling of the dark photon to the dark Higgs boson. Abstract: Using $(771.6 \pm 10.6) \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ meson pairs recorded by the Belle experiment at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider, we report the branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} π^-) = (2.62 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.09)\times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} K^-) = (2.22 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.08)\times 10^{-4}$; the quoted uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. A measurement of the ratio of these branching fractions is also presented, $\mathcal{R}_{K/π}=\mathcal{B}(\bar{B} \to D^{*+}K^-) /\mathcal{B}( \bar{B} \to D^{*+}π^-) = (8.41 \pm 0.24 \pm 0.13)\times 10^{-2}$, where systematic uncertainties due to the $D^{*+}$ meson reconstruction cancel out. Furthermore, we report a new QCD factorization test based on the measured ratios for $\bar{B} \to D^{*+}h^-$ and $\bar{B} \to D^{*+}\ell^-ν$ decays at squared momentum transfer values equivalent to the mass of the $h = π$ or $K$ hadron. The parameters $|a_1(h)|$ are measured to be $|a_1(π)|= 0.884 \pm 0.004 \pm 0.003 \pm 0.016$ and $|a_1(K)|=0.913 \pm 0.019 \pm 0.008 \pm 0.013$, where the last uncertainties account for all external inputs. These values are approximately $15\%$ lower than those expected from theoretical predictions. Subsequently, flavor $SU(3)$ symmetry is tested by measuring the ratios for pions and kaons, $|a_1(K)|^2/ |a_1(π)|^2=1.066 \pm 0.042 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.023$, as well as for different particle species. The ratio is consistent with unity and therefore no evidence for $SU(3)$ symmetry breaking effects is found at the $5\%$ precision level. △ Less

We reconstruct $B^+\to ρ^+(\to π^+π^0(\to γγ))ρ^0(\to π^+π^-)$ decays in a sample of SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions collected by the Belle II experiment in 2019, 2020, and 2021 at the $Υ$(4S) resonance an… ▽ More We report on a Belle II measurement of the branching fraction ($\mathcal{B}$), longitudinal polarization fraction ($f_L$), and CP asymmetry ($\mathcal{A}_{CP}$) of $B^+\to ρ^+ρ^0$ decays. We reconstruct $B^+\to ρ^+(\to π^+π^0(\to γγ))ρ^0(\to π^+π^-)$ decays in a sample of SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions collected by the Belle II experiment in 2019, 2020, and 2021 at the $Υ$(4S) resonance and corresponding to 190 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We fit the distributions of the difference between expected and observed $B$ candidate energy, continuum-suppression discriminant, dipion masses, and decay angles of the selected samples, to determine a signal yield of $345 \pm 31$ events. The signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to ρ^+ρ^0) = [23.2^{+\ 2.2}_{-\ 2.1} (\rm stat) \pm 2.7 (\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $f_L = 0.943 ^{+\ 0.035}_{-\ 0.033} (\rm stat)\pm 0.027(\rm syst)$, and $\mathcal{A}_{CP}=-0.069 \pm 0.068(\rm stat) \pm 0.060 (\rm syst)$. The results agree with previous measurements. This is the first measurement of $\mathcal{A}_{CP}$ in $B^+\to ρ^+ρ^0$ decays reported by Belle II. △ Less

The corresponding branching fractions are measured to be ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{0} π^{+} \bar{p}) = (1.09 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.07)\times10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{++} π^{-} \bar{p}) = (1.84\pm 0.11 \pm 0.12)\times 10^{-4}$, which are consistent with the world average values with improved precision. A new structure is found in the $M_{Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++}π^{\pm}}$ spectrum with a significance of $4.2σ$ including systematic uncertainty. The structure is possibly an excited $Λ_{c}^{+}$ and is tentatively named $Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}$. Its mass and width are measured to be $(2913.8 \pm 5.6 \pm 3.8)$ MeV/$c^{2}$ and $(51.8\pm20.0 \pm 18.8)$ MeV, respectively. The products of branching fractions for the $Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}$ are measured to be ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}\bar{p})\times{\cal B}(Λ_{c}(2910)^{+} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{0}π^{+}) = (9.5 \pm 3.6 \pm 1.6)\times 10^{-6}$ and ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Λ_{c} (2910)^{+}\bar{p})\times {\cal B}(Λ_{c}(2910)^{+} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{++}π^{-}) = (1.24 \pm 0.35 \pm 0.10)\times 10^{-5}$. Abstract: We report the measurement of the branching fraction of the $B^0 \to K_S^0 π^0 γ$ decay in $e^+ e^- \to Υ(4S) \to B \overline{B}$ data recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy collider and corresponding to 190 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We reconstruct $K^{\ast}(892)$ candidates in the $K^+π^-$, $K_{S}^{0}π^+$, and $K^+π^0$ final states. The signal yields with statistical uncertainties are $22\pm 6$, $18 \pm 6$, and $38 \pm 9$ for the decays $B \to K^{\ast}(892)μ^+μ^-$, $B \to K^{\ast}(892)e^+e^-$, and $B \to K^{\ast}(892)\ell^+\ell^-$, respectively. We measure the branching fractions of these decays for the entire range of the dilepton mass, excluding the very low mass region to suppress the $B \to K^{\ast}(892)γ(\to e^+e^-)$ background and regions compatible with decays of charmonium resonances, to be \begin{equation} {\cal B}(B \to K^{\ast}(892)μ^+μ^-) = (1.19 \pm 0.31 ^{+0.08}_{-0.07}) \times 10^{-6}, {\cal B}(B \to K^{\ast}(892)e^+e^-) = (1.42 \pm 0.48 \pm 0.09)\times 10^{-6}, {\cal B}(B \to K^{\ast}(892)\ell^+\ell^-) = (1.25 \pm 0.30 ^{+0.08}_{-0.07}) \times 10^{-6}, \end{equation} where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. This white paper describes the physics potential of this `Chiral Belle' program. It includes projections for precision measurements of $\sin^2θ_W$ that can be obtained from independent left-right asymmetry measurements of $e^+e^-$ transitions to pairs of electrons, muons, taus, charm and b-quarks. The $\sin^2θ_W$ precision obtainable at SuperKEKB will match that of the LEP/SLC world average, but at the centre-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. Measurements of the couplings for muons, charm, and $b$-quarks will be substantially improved and the existing $3σ$ discrepancy between the SLC $A_{LR}$ and LEP $A_{FB}^b$ measurements will be addressed. Precision measurements of neutral current universality will be more than an order of magnitude more precise than currently available. As the energy scale is well away from the $Z^0$-pole, the precision measurements will have sensitivity to the presence of a parity-violating dark sector gauge boson, $Z_{\rm dark}$. The program also enables the measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment $g-2$ form factor of the $τ$ to be made at an unprecedented level of precision. A precision of $10^{-5}$ level is accessible with 40~ab$^{-1}$ and with more data it would start to approach the $10^{-6}$ level. This technique would provide the most precise information from the third generation about potential new physics explanations of the muon $g-2$ $4σ$ anomaly. Additional $τ$ and QCD physics programs enabled or enhanced with having polarized electron beams are also discussed in this White Paper. Our results for the ratios of branching fractions are $B(D^{+}\to K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{0})/B(D^{+}\to K^{-}π^{+}π^{+}π^{0}) = (11.32 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.26)\%$, $B(D^{+}\to K^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{0})/B(D^{+}\to K^{-}π^{+}π^{+}π^{0}) = (1.68 \pm 0.11\pm 0.03)\%$, and $B(D_s^{+}\to K^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{0})/B(D_s^{+}\to K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{0}) = (17.13 \pm 0.62 \pm 0.51)\%$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The second value corresponds to $(5.83\pm 0.42)\times\tan^4θ_C$, where $θ_C$ is the Cabibbo angle; this value is larger than other measured ratios of branching fractions for a doubly Cabibbo-suppressed charm decay to a Cabibbo-favored decay. Multiplying these results by world average values for $B(D^{+}\to K^{-}π^{+}π^{+}π^{0})$ and $B(D_s^{+}\to K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{0})$ yields $B(D^{+}\to K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{0})= (7.08\pm 0.08\pm 0.16\pm 0.20)\times10^{-3}$, $B(D^{+}\to K^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{0})= (1.05\pm 0.07\pm 0.02\pm 0.03)\times10^{-3}$, and $B(D_s^{+}\to K^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{0}) = (9.44\pm 0.34\pm 0.28\pm 0.32)\times10^{-3}$, where the third uncertainty is due to the branching fraction of the normalization mode. Abstract: Recoil imaging entails the detection of spatially resolved ionization tracks generated by particle interactions. This is a highly sought-after capability in many classes of detector, with broad applications across particle and astroparticle physics. However, at low energies, where ionization signatures are small in size, recoil imaging only seems to be a practical goal for micro-pattern gas detect… ▽ More Recoil imaging entails the detection of spatially resolved ionization tracks generated by particle interactions. This is a highly sought-after capability in many classes of detector, with broad applications across particle and astroparticle physics. However, at low energies, where ionization signatures are small in size, recoil imaging only seems to be a practical goal for micro-pattern gas detectors. This white paper outlines the physics case for recoil imaging, and puts forward a decadal plan to advance towards the directional detection of low-energy recoils with sensitivity and resolution close to fundamental performance limits. The science case covered includes: the discovery of dark matter into the neutrino fog, directional detection of sub-MeV solar neutrinos, the precision study of coherent-elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering, the detection of solar axions, the measurement of the Migdal effect, X-ray polarimetry, and several other applied physics goals. We also outline the R&D programs necessary to test concepts that are crucial to advance detector performance towards their fundamental limit: single primary electron sensitivity with full 3D spatial resolution at the $\sim$100 micron-scale. These advancements include: the use of negative ion drift, electron counting with high-definition electronic readout, time projection chambers with optical readout, and the possibility for nuclear recoil tracking in high-density gases such as argon. At the end of Phase 2, single-beam backgrounds origina\ ting from the 4 GeV positron Low Energy Ring (LER) agree reasonably well with simulation, while backgrounds from the 7 GeV elect\ ron High Energy Ring (HER) are approximately one order of magnitude higher than simulation. We extrapolate these backgrounds for\ ward and conclude it is safe to install the Belle II vertex detector. △ Less

A significant $Λ_c^+$ signal is observed for the first time with a signal significanc… ▽ More We present the first measurement of the branching fraction of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed (SCS) decay $Λ_c^+ \to p η'$ with $η' \to ηπ^+π^-$, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 981 $\rm fb^{-1}$, collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^{+}$$e^{-}$ asymmetric-energy collider. A significant $Λ_c^+$ signal is observed for the first time with a signal significance of 5.4$σ$. The relative branching fraction with respect to the normalization mode $Λ_c^+ \to pK^-π^+$ is measured to be \begin{equation*} \frac{{\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to p η')}{{\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to p K^-π^+)} = (7.54 \pm 1.32 \pm 0.75) \times 10^{-3}, \end{equation*} where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Using the world-average value of ${\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to p K^-π^+) = (6.28\pm0.32)\times10^{-2}$, we obtain \begin{equation*} {\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to p η') = (4.73 \pm 0.82 \pm 0.47 \pm 0.24)\times 10^{-4}, \end{equation*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and from ${\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to pK^-π^+)$, respectively. △ Less
