Optimization of the JUNO liquid scintillator composition using a Daya Bay antineutrino detector

Abstract: To maximize the light yield of the liquid scintillator (LS) for the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 t LS sample was produced in a pilot plant at Daya Bay. The optical properties of the new LS in various compositions were studied by replacing the gadolinium-loaded LS in one antineutrino detector. The optical properties of the new LS in various compositions were studied by replacing the gadolinium-loaded LS in one antineutrino detector. The concentrations of the fluor, PPO, and the wavelength shifter, bis-MSB, were increased in 12 steps from 0.5 g/L and <0.01 mg/L to 4 g/L and 13 mg/L, respectively. The numbers of total detected photoelectrons suggest that, with the optically purified solvent, the bis-MSB concentration does not need to be more than 4 mg/L. To bridge the one order of magnitude in the detector size difference between Daya Bay and JUNO, the Daya Bay data were used to tune the parameters of a newly developed optical model. Then, the model and tuned parameters were used in the JUNO simulation. Precision measurements of $σ_{B}(e^+e^- \to K_{S}^{0}K^{\pm}π^{\mp})$ at center-of-mass energies between 3.8 and 4.6 GeV

Abstract: Using data samples collected by the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, we measure the $e^+e^- \to K_{S}^{0}K^{\pm}π^{\mp}$ Born cross sections at center-of-mass energies between 3.8 and 4.6\,GeV, corresponding to a luminosity of about 5.0~fb$^{-1}$. The results are compatible with the BABAR measurements, but with the precision significantly improved. Two approaches are presented. A mass-dependent analysis is performed by parameterizing the $K_{S}K_{S}$ invariant mass spectrum as a sum of Breit-Wigner line shapes. Two approaches are presented. A mass-dependent analysis is performed by parameterizing the $K_{S}K_{S}$ invariant mass spectrum as a sum of Breit-Wigner line shapes. Additionally, a mass-independent analysis is performed to extract a piecewise function that describes the dynamics of the $K_{S}K_{S}$ system while making minimal assumptions about the properties and number of poles in the amplitude. The dominant amplitudes in the mass-dependent analysis include the $f_{0}(1710)$, $f_{0}(2200)$, and $f_{2}^\prime(1525)$. The mass-independent results, which are made available as input for further studies, are consistent with those of the mass-dependent analysis and are useful for a systematic study of hadronic interactions. The branching fraction of radiative $J/ψ$ decays to $K_{S}K_{S}$ is measured to be $(8.1 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-4}$, where the uncertainty is systematic and the statistical uncertainty is negligible. △ Less

Evidence of a resonant structure in the $e^+e^-\to π^+D^0D^{*-}$ cross section between 4.05 and 4.60 GeV

Using several models to describe the dressed cross section yields stable parameters for the first enhancement, which has a mass of $4228.6 \pm 4.1 \pm 6.3 \un{MeV}/c^2$ and a width of $77.0 \pm 6.8 \pm 6.3 \un{MeV}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. Our resonant mass is consistent with previous observations of the $Y(4220)$ state and the theoretical prediction of a $D\bar{D}_1(2420)$ molecule. This result is the first observation of $Y(4220)$ associated with an open-charm final state. Fits with three resonance functions with additional $Y(4260)$, $Y(4320)$, $Y(4360)$, $ψ(4415)$, or a new resonance, do not show significant contributions from either of these resonances. The second enhancement is not from a single known resonance. It could contain contributions from $ψ(4415)$ and other resonances, and a detailed amplitude analysis is required to better understand this enhancement. △ Less

Measurement of the phase between strong and electromagnetic amplitudes of $J/ψ$ decays

Abstract: Using 16 energy points of $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation data collected in the vicinity of the $J/ψ$ resonance with the BESIII detector and with a total integrated luminosity of around 100 pb$^{-1}$, we study the relative phase between the strong and electromagnetic amplitudes of $J/ψ$ decays. The relative phase between $Jψ$ electromagnetic decay and the continuum process ($e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation wit… ▽ More Using 16 energy points of $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation data collected in the vicinity of the $J/ψ$ resonance with the BESIII detector and with a total integrated luminosity of around 100 pb$^{-1}$, we study the relative phase between the strong and electromagnetic amplitudes of $J/ψ$ decays. The relative phase between $Jψ$ electromagnetic decay and the continuum process ($e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation without the $J/ψ$ resonance) is confirmed to be zero by studying the cross section lineshape of $μ^{+}μ^{-}$ production. The relative phase between $J/ψ$ strong and electromagnetic decays is then measured to be $(84.9\pm3.6)^\circ$ or $(-84.7\pm3.1)^\circ$ for the $2(π^{+}π^{-})π^{0}$ final state by investigating the interference pattern between the $J/ψ$ decay and the continuum process. This is the first measurement of the relative phase between $J/ψ$ strong and electromagnetic decays into a multihadron final state using the lineshape of the production cross section. We also study the production lineshape of the multihadron final state $ηπ^{+}π^{-}$ with $η\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}$, which provides additional information about the phase between the $J/ψ$ electromagnetic decay amplitude and the continuum process. Additionally, the branching fraction of $J/ψ\to 2(π^{+}π^{-})π^{0}$ is measured to be $(4.73\pm0.44)\%$ or $(4.85\pm0.45)\%$, and the branching fraction of $J/ψ\toηπ^{+}π^{-}$ is measured to be $(3.78\pm0.68)\times10^{-4}$. Both of them are consistent with the world average values. The quoted uncertainties include both statistical and systematic uncertainties, which are mainly caused by the low statistics. △ Less

Measurement of absolute branching fraction of the inclusive decay $Λ_{c}^{+} \to Λ+ X$

Measurement of the Integrated Luminosities of Cross-section Scan Data Samples Around the $ψ(3770)$ Mass Region

Study of $η(1475)$ and $X(1835)$ in radiative $J/ψ$ decays to $γφ$

Abstract: The decay $J/ψ\rightarrow γγφ$ is studied using a sample of $1.31 \times10^{9}$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector. Two structures around 1475 MeV/c$^2$ and 1835 MeV/c$^2$ are observed in the $γφ$ invariant mass spectrum for the first time. With a fit on the $γφ$ invariant mass, which takes into account the interference between the two structures, and a simple analysis of the angular… ▽ More The decay $J/ψ\rightarrow γγφ$ is studied using a sample of $1.31 \times10^{9}$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector. Two structures around 1475 MeV/c$^2$ and 1835 MeV/c$^2$ are observed in the $γφ$ invariant mass spectrum for the first time. With a fit on the $γφ$ invariant mass, which takes into account the interference between the two structures, and a simple analysis of the angular distribution, the structure around 1475 MeV/c$^2$ is found to favor an assignment as the $η(1475)$ and the mass and width for the structure around 1835 MeV/c$^2$ are consistent with the $X(1835)$. The statistical significances of the two structures are $13.5 σ$ and $6.3 σ$, respectively. The results indicate that both $η(1475)$ and $X(1835)$ contain a sizeable $s\bar{s}$ component. △ Less

The decay branching fractions of $χ_{c0,c2} \to γγ$ are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(χ_{c0}\toγγ) = (1.93 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.05)\times 10^{-4}$ and $\mathcal{B}(χ_{c2}\toγγ) = (3.10 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.11)\times 10^{-4} $, which correspond to two-photon decay widths of $Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c0}) = 2.03 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.13 ~\rm{keV}$ and $Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c2}) = 0.60 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.01 \pm 0.04 ~\rm{keV}$ with a ratio of $\mathcal{R}=Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c2})/Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c0})= 0.295 \pm 0.014 \pm 0.007 \pm 0.027$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and associated with the uncertainties of $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686)\toγχ_{c0,c2})$ and the total widths $Γ(χ_{c0,c2})$, respectively. For the forbidden decay of $χ_{c1}\toγγ$, no signal is observed, and an upper limit on the two-photon width is obtained to be $Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c1})<5.3 ~\rm{eV}$ at the 90\% confidence level. The ratio of the two-photon widths between helicity-zero and helicity-two components in the decay $χ_{c2}\toγγ$ is also measured to be $f_{0/2} = Γ^{λ=0}_{γγ}(χ_{c2})/Γ^{λ=2}_{γγ}(χ_{c2}) = (0.0 \pm 0.6 \pm 1.2)\times 10^{-2}$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. △ Less

Abstract: The state $Y(2175)$ is observed in the process $e^+ e^- \to ηY(2175)$ at center-of-mass energies between 3.7 and 4.6$\sim$GeV with a statistical significance larger than $10σ$ using data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. This is the first observation of the $Y(2175)$ in this process. The mass and width of the $Y(2175)$ are determined to be ($2135\pm 8\pm 9$)~… ▽ More The state $Y(2175)$ is observed in the process $e^+ e^- \to ηY(2175)$ at center-of-mass energies between 3.7 and 4.6$\sim$GeV with a statistical significance larger than $10σ$ using data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. No significant signal for the process $e^+ e^- \to η' Y(2175)$ is observed and the upper limit on $σ(e^+ e^- \to η' Y(2175))/σ(e^+ e^- \to ηY(2175))$ is estimated to be 0.43 at the 90\% confidence level. We also search for $ψ(3686) \to ηY(2175)$. No significant signal is observed, indicating a strong suppression relative to the corresponding $J/ψ$ decay, in violation of the "12\% rule." △ Less

The dominant contribution is found to be $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ decays to $ρη^\prime$. In the $J/ψ$ decay, the branching frac… ▽ More Using the data samples of $1.31\times 10^9$ $J/ψ$ events and $4.48\times 10^8$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, partial wave analyses on the decays $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686) \to π^+π^-η^\prime$ are performed with a relativistic covariant tensor amplitude approach. The dominant contribution is found to be $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ decays to $ρη^\prime$. In the $J/ψ$ decay, the branching fraction ${\cal B}(J/ψ\to ρη^\prime)$ is determined to be $(7.90\pm0.19(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.49(\mathrm{sys}))\times 10^{-5}$. Two solutions are found in the $ψ(3686)$ decay, and the corresponding branching fraction ${\cal B}(ψ(3686)\to ρη^\prime)$ is $(1.02\pm0.11(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.24(\mathrm{sys}))\times 10^{-5}$ for the case of constructive interference, and $(5.69\pm1.28(\mathrm{stat})\pm2.36(\mathrm{sys}))\times 10^{-6}$ for destructive interference. As a consequence, the ratios of branching fractions between $ψ(3686)$ and $J/ψ$ decays to $ρη^\prime$ are calculated to be $(12.9\pm1.4(\mathrm{stat})\pm3.1(\mathrm{sys}))$\% and $(7.2\pm1.6(\mathrm{stat})\pm3.0(\mathrm{sys}))$\%, respectively. We also determine the inclusive branching fractions of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ decays to $π^+π^-η^\prime$ to be $(1.36\pm0.02(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.08(\mathrm{sys}))\times 10^{-4}$ and $(1.51\pm0.14(\mathrm{stat})\pm 0.23(\mathrm{sys}))\times 10^{-5}$, respectively. △ Less

Abstract: We search for the rare decay $D^+\to D^0 e^+ν_{e}$, using a data set with an integrated luminosity of 2.93 $\rm fb^{-1}$ collected at $\sqrt{s}=3.773$ GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage rings. No signals are observed. We set the upper limit on the branching fraction for $D^+\to D^0 e^+ν_e$ to be $1.0\times 10^{-4}$ at the 90\% confidence level. Abstract: Using a sample of $447.9\times 10^6$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector in 2009 and 2012, we study the decays $χ_{c0,2}\to$ $η'η'$ and $ηη'$. The decays $χ_{c2}\toη'η'$, $χ_{c0}\toηη'$ and $χ_{c2}\toηη'$ are observed for the first time with statistical significances of $9.6σ$, $13.4σ$ and $7.5σ$, respectively. The precision for the measurement of $\mathcal{B}(χ_{c0}\toη'η')$ is significantly improved compared to previous measurements. Based on the measured branching fractions, the role played by the doubly and singly Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka disconnected transition amplitudes for $χ_{c0,2}$ decays into pseudoscalar meson pairs can be clarified. △ Less

With the values of $|V_{cs}|$ and $|V_{cd}|$ from Particle Data Group fits assuming CKM unitarity, we obtain the values of the form factors at $q^2=0$, $f^K_+(0) = 0.725\pm0.004\pm 0.012$ and $f^π_+(0) = 0.622\pm0.012\pm 0.003$. Taking input from recent lattice QCD calculations of these form factors, we determine values of the CKM matrix elements $|V_{cs}|=0.944 \pm 0.005 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.024$ and $|V_{cd}|=0.210 \pm 0.004 \pm 0.001 \pm 0.009$, where the third uncertainties are theoretical. △ Less

Abstract: We study the process $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}ψ(3686)$ using 5.1 $fb^{-1}$ of data collected at 16 center-of-mass energy ($\sqrt{s}$) points from 4.008 to 4.600$\sim$GeV by the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The measured Born cross sections for $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}ψ(3686)$ are consistent with previous results, but with much improved precision. A fit to the cross section shows contributions from two structures: the first has $M=4209.5\pm7.4\pm1.4$$\sim$MeV/$c^{2}$ and $Γ=80.1\pm24.6\pm2.9$$\sim$MeV, and the second has $M=4383.8\pm4.2\pm0.8$$\sim$MeV/c$^{2}$ and $Γ=84.2\pm12.5\pm2.1$$\sim$MeV, where the first errors are statistical and the second systematic. The lower-mass resonance is observed in the process $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}ψ(3686)$ for the first time with a statistical significance of $5.8σ$. A charged charmonium-like structure is observed in the $π^{\pm}ψ(3686)$ invariant mass spectrum for data at $\sqrt{s} = 4.416~$GeV. A fit with an $S$-wave Breit-Wigner function yields a mass $M=4032.1\pm2.4$~$MeV$^{2}$, where the errors are statistical only. However, there are still unresolved discrepancies between the fit model and data. The width of the intermediate state varies in a wide range for different kinematic regions within the data set. Therefore no simple interpretation of the data has been found, and a future data sample with larger statistics and more theoretical input will be required to better understand this issue. △ Less

By considering the multipole contributions of $χ_{c1,2}$, we measure the product branching fractions for the cascade decays $ψ(3686)\rightarrowγχ_{c0,1,2}\toγγJ/ψ$ and search for the process $η_{c}(2S)\toγJ/ψ$ through $ψ(3686)\rightarrowγη_{c}(2S)$. The product branching fraction for $ψ(3686)\rightarrowγχ_{c0}\toγγJ/ψ$ is 3$σ$ larger than published measurements, while those of $ψ(3686)rightarrowγχ_{c1,2}\toγγJ/ψ$ are consistent. No significant signal for the decay $ψ(3686)\toγη_c(2S)\toγγJ/ψ$ is observed, and the upper limit of the product branching fraction at the 90\% confidence level is determined. △ Less

Abstract: We study the decays of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ to the final states $Σ(1385)^{0}\barΣ(1385)^{0}$ and $Ξ^0\barΞ^{0}$ based on a single baryon tag method using data samples of $(1310.6 \pm 7.0) \times 10^{6}$ $J/ψ$ and $(447.9 \pm 2.9) \times 10^{6}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The decays to $Σ(1385)^{0}\barΣ(1385)^{0}$ are observed for the first time. The measured branching fractions of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)\rightarrowΞ^0\barΞ^{0}$ are in good agreement with, and much more precise, than the previously published results. The angular parameters for these decays are also measured for the first time. The measured angular decay parameter for $J/ψ\rightarrowΣ(1385)^{0}\barΣ(1385)^{0}$, $α=-0.64 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.10$, is found to be negative, different to the other decay processes in this measurement. In addition, the "12\% rule" and isospin symmetry in the $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)\rightarrowΞ\barΞ$ and $Σ(1385)\barΣ(1385)$ systems are tested. △ Less

Abstract: The decays of $χ_{c2}\to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}$, $K_{S} K^{\pm}π^{\mp}$ and $π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}$ are studied with the $ψ(3686)$ data samples collected with the Bei**g Spectrometer (BESIII). For the first time, the branching fractions of $χ_{c2}\to K^{\ast}\overline{K}$, $χ_{c2}\to a_{2}^{\pm}(1320)π^{\mp}/a_{2}^{0}(1320)π^{0}$ and $χ_{c2}\to ρ(770)^{\pm}π^{\mp}$ are measured. Here $K^{\ast}\overline{K}$ denotes both $K^{\ast\pm}K^{\mp}$ and $K^{\ast 0}\overline{K}{}^{0}+c.c.$, and $K^{\ast}$ denotes the resonances $K^{\ast}(892)$, $K^{\ast}_{2}(1430)$ and $K^{\ast}_{3}(1780)$. The observations indicate a strong violation of the helicity selection rule in $χ_{c2}$ decays into vector and pseudoscalar meson pairs. The measured branching fractions of $χ_{c2}\to K^{\ast}(892)\overline{K}$ are more than 10 times larger than the upper limit of $χ_{c2}\to ρ(770)^{\pm}π^{\mp}$, which is so far the first direct observation of a significant $U$-spin symmetry breaking effect in charmonium decays. △ Less

Improved measurements of branching fractions for $η_c\toφφ$ and $ωφ$

Abstract: Using $(223.7\pm1.4)\times10^6$ J/$ψ$ events accumulated with the BESIII detector, we study $η_c$ decays to $φφ$ and $ωφ$ final states. The branching fraction of $η_c\toφφ$ is measured to be $Br(η_c\toφφ)=(2.5\pm0.3^{+0.3}_{-0.7}\pm0.6)\times10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is from the uncertainty of $Br(J/ψ\toγη_c)$. Measurement of the Absolute Branching Fraction for $Λ_c^+\rightarrow Λμ^+ν_μ$

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the absolute branching fraction for $Λ^+_{c}\rightarrow Λμ^+ν_μ$. This measurement is based on a sample of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=4.6$ GeV collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage rings. The sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 567 pb$^{-1}$. The branching fraction is determined to be… ▽ More We report the first measurement of the absolute branching fraction for $Λ^+_{c}\rightarrow Λμ^+ν_μ$. This measurement is based on a sample of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=4.6$ GeV collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage rings. The sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 567 pb$^{-1}$.
